Ubisoft: Feudal Japan is a possible setting for future Assassin's Creed games

This. 3 and Blag Flag had barely Climbing in them and i want those towers of the Ezio Trilogy back.

I want to say "At least 3 had cities", but, really, Colonial America was aesthetically and architecturally dull. Black Flag's biggest offence is that you can count the sizeable locations on one hand and none of them comparable favourably (in terms of scope) to, say, Florence or Venice let alone Rome or Constantinople.

they're just saying EVERYWHERE is a possibility according to the quote. Which is, like, duh. Japan would be neat, but once again the cities of historical Japan would seem to me to be pretty boring from a navigational standpoint. .

This is my main fear. Boston in AC III proved that the location of the game and the towns architecture is very important for this series. But as they did a pirates game they could try also a ninja one.

Days between location announcement and release:

AC2: 225
ACB: 195
ACR: 200
AC3: 244
AC4: 243

We're probably still five weeks away.

I think something like that would enable them to spend a good bit of time reworking the combat system, which is little unchanged from games years ago. It is something that certainly needs work, perhaps at this point more than any other major part of the games.

A fresh setting that placed combat on a higher roll of importance is the excuse they need. Other times and settings could do this also, but this would be a great place to start.

I thought feudal japan is the most boring setting

If they go with this I really hope they have the option of having Japanese in-Animus voiceovers with subtitles, I don't think I'd care for the stereotyped accents otherwise.

I'd prefer China over Japan, they even have an assassin already in place, just make it her ancestor. The period of three kingdoms please.

I'm not particular bothered about the setting provided sprawling cities make a return.

Sprawling cities as boring as Boston and New York in AC3 would be horrible. At least the smaller ones in the Caribbean were fairly interesting. Generally though I agree. We need cities with some actual history and also some tall structures to climb. Feudal Japan would be one of the many settings that would work. I'd also take Mughal/Raj era India, revolutionary France or Victorian London in a heartbeat.

There should be a twist in the settings. Like, make it a ninja but in modern day Tokyo. Scaling those skyscrapers in the night would be epic.

Just take the animus shit out completely and simply let us play each game from the proper historical perspective without having to leave.

You would not believe how much "native people speaking their own language with accents" bugs me. I also hope they do full Japanese (giving everyone American/Brit dialects is fine by me too but tons of people will scream about it being unnatural)

That'd be interesting, but what cities would you have them centered around?
Hell I don't know, some research would be needed there. Whatever the major hubs were around that era I guess. I just love Viking lore, and they were expert sailors, so the ship combat would be a given. I think they could really revamp the combat as well, maybe have a more brutish feel to it.

I had a theory that the AC games were slowly moving through time and would eventually reach present day meaning we would get AC games set in WW1 and WW2 and Vietnam etc. It seems i was wrong though as AC4 moved back in time again and feudal Japan would be even further back.

I would like that too. But the OP quote already throws the Animus stuff as justification of "whatever".

Here is the beauty of it. They can make whatever game they want. And given the yearly releases and direction the series has taken, I doubt it would be missed.

I always got the impression that the Vikings were a hovel/shack type civilization near bodies of water and they had no large structures for which free running would make sense.

The idea of Japan excites me for the new weapons if nothing else, but the thought of climbing Big Ben also rustles my jimmies.

Can't wait to stealth follow while trying to listen in on feudal lord conversations

For the love of God, Ubi better get rid of those tailing missions. They're terrible.

Feudal Japan would be a great setting though imo. As would the wild west; it'd be awesome if you could raid trains and such lol.

What if the AC world is so far ahead in the future that modern day Tokyo is ancient to them?

That's pretty animu but it'd be more interesting than the whole "ancient astronauts want to blow up earth/people reincarnating as computer programs" thing they're going with now

Now that just sounds crazy. I guess what you're talking about would be an AC game at least partially taking place in modern day Tokyo in 2014, which just sounds like a new IP in itself.

Also, leave the Animus alone.

I suspect they'd probably set the hub around England, since they did raid places like London, East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria, but most of these places were seriously fucking limited in terms of assassin navigational options in the 750-850A.D. era it'd likely be set in.

I mean I guess they'd be going open world sailing like ACIV (even though viking ships were far more limited than what we saw in Black Sails), but the cities themselves would probably be super dull.

I think i would like an Assassin's Creed set in a memorable city again before something like that personally since it's been a bunch of AC games since we last had that, then we could return to the idea

Indeed, but the cities in AC aren't necessarily built by the nationality of the protagonist are they? They could be cities from other nations. As I recall, the Vikings were mostly active from around 700 A.D. to a little after 1100 A.D. Lots of potential for cities there.

The last few games seemed to be announced on the first Monday of March. I'm calling March 3rd, you heard it here first!

Maybe it should be a watch dogs sequel.

Please be excited for Watch Doge.

People who want London should just go play Dishonored and maybe the new Thief game. Ancient Japan is not a setting that is heavily explored in gaming, especially western gaming. There is a ton of possibilities for an AC game in that time period. Honestly the back alley of the Sizzler would be a more exciting setting than colonial America.

I want an AC where they let you - at least as a substantial part of the game - do classical AC gameplay in a modern setting.

Say what you will but modern day has tall buildings.

As per my previous post, I agree. I didn't watch/read much of Black Flag prior to release but I did see one video wherein the director stated that the team took inspiration from 2's Florence/Venice for Havana and upon playing the game this was immediately obvious (which is a good thing), however it's a pity that it's one of just a few of the larger locations on offer.
