Yet more Majora's Mask teasing. (Interview in Game Informer.)

Yeah MM 3DS is definitely coming. Although I'd much rather see in on the U, this is kinda easy cashing for Nintendo. I mean like what you said, the engine and a lot of the character designs are already finished because of OoT 3DS. But in a perfect world, which this isn't of course, I'd give my right kidney for a MM (or rather OoT, but that's even more unrealistic at this point) remake on U. Note: when I say remake, I really mean from scratch. I don't know how they did WW, but just polishing the original MM straight to HD would come out very ugly in my opinion.

So yeah, I don't see it happening on the U and I personally don't like 3D games on 3DS. Sure, games like ALBW with the 3D gimmicks are cool, but I really liked the original OoT more than the 3DS remake. I don't know why, I think I just like playing 3D games on a relatively big television.

Majora's Mask is unpopular?

News to me.
Unpopular doesn't always mean the "worst", but MM is indeed (one of the) most unpopular/lesser known Zelda's. Sure, every Zelda fan knows about it, but there are other casual Zelda players too. I guess because it always lived in OoT's shadow. Which isn't a shame really, for me, OoT is the best gamer ever. By. A. Long. Shot.

I've been holding out on upgrading my 3DS to an XL for this reason alone. I know there is going to be an amazing bundle with the mask on the shell, and I need that in my life something fierce (deity).

I just need them to tell me if I should wait or if I should just go through the Wii VC version I already have. I've been holding off on playing that version in case a remake with some enhancements is made. JUST FUCKING TELL ME NINTENDOLTS.

I've been holding off from re-playing Majora's Mask since OOT 3D was first announced at E3 2010, as even at that point it seemed inevitable.

yep, I've been waiting four years now almost.

Just play regular MM. I finally played it almost exactly a year ago in a 100% run. Absolutely worth it to experience the original before they do a remake/enhanced version.

It's fine.

Well, yeah. It's no Banjo Tooie. But seriously, the first impression of playing it via a 3DS remake will be a far superior experience to playing the N64 version if you haven't done so before.

it's really, really worth the wait. Seriously. Just look at OOT3D vs the N64. 3DS version is by far the definitive edition.

If MM3D is not announced by E3 then go for the N64 version heh

Majora's Mask is the only Zelda I've never played (besides Minish Cap) so this is essentially the new Zelda for me. I really can't wait, wish they'd reveal it already.

Nah, if you haven't played the original 2000 MM yet, you could wait just a little while. I have a feeling it will be officially announced at least before March or April. Also, even though the nostalgia hits me like a rock, I really really really never liked the N64 controls. So to go back to those controls after getting used on the X360 and PS3 controllers, nahhhhh no way.

So yeah, I'd wait if I were you.

They've been teasing it for almost a year.

First Direct of the year, it's getting announced.

Believe.

For the love of God! Please!

After seeing the sales of Star Fox 3DS, I'd be pretty surprised Nintendo would greenlight a MM remake. I think they've already gotten the nostalgia buys with OOT 3DS. Now you'd just be appealing to the hard core fans of a Nintendo 64 game... over a decade after it released.

Happy to be wrong, though! After playing MM on VC, I would like a new version with improved framerate, and a camera that lets you see more of the world.

Ocarina has three direct sequel thanks to the split timeline.

-Wind waker takes place in Adult Link time line.
-Majora's Mask takes place in Child Link time line.
-Twilight Princess which takes place after Majora's Mask and continues the story set in Ocarina of Time.

I thought it had 4? Zelda 1 takes place if OoT Link dies.

So since MM is probably going to be remade, should I bother playing the N64 version? I took it out and it's sitting beside my TV but hesitant to play it because if a remake comes out, it might take out the experience playing it for the first time.

MM is still a Zelda game. Starfox 64 is not a Zelda game.

I'm excited. I haven't tried to play MM since 2008 or so. I didn't like it much then, but I loved it back when it first came out... So I want to give it a third try! There aren't many Zelda games I've only beat once.

Remaking the most unpopular Zelda while your console struggles to sell it such a Nintendo move I can see it happening.

Yes, because Grezzo, the tiny company that remaked OoT and would also develop the 3DS remake of Majora's Mask, would otherwise develop a blockbuster Wii U game.

I wouldn't bother. The framerate is pretty bad at points, the graphics are a bit muddy.... Might as well wait and play a more optimised version, even if it is on a smaller screen.

It's fun when people who don't have a clue how Nintendo works complain about how Nintendo works, isn't it? :D

speaking for yourself

Did the general public really want an HD re-release to a Gamecube game? I think Nintendo is mistaking the online small cult who likes the game for actual demand.

Did the general public or even hardcore gamers ask for another Luigi's Mansion?

I enjoyed both games at the time they came out, but most people thought they were average at best, and I agree with that.

What's next, another Chibo Robo?

Missed out on the two best Zelda games of each dimension.

What now? Minish cap is the best 2D Zelda? Thank you for the laughs. That is the most cut and paste phoned in Zelda title ever released. It also was incredibly short and easy and lacked anything new. For a game that came out after the DS was already out, my expectations were way higher.

Same here. OoT 3D was what got me back into Zelda after giving up on the entire series during the Water Temple (twice, ugh). I immediately assumed they'd use the OoT 3D engine to fart out an MM 3D remake but Nintendo is fucking weird so it hasn't happened.

I'll be keeping notes on my heart pieces this time, since I always manage to miss one in every playthrough except my first one in 2000 :/

Yeah. And the new LM should be (at least close to) a 3M seller already.

The game world, especially the hub town (plus sidequests) shits on every other title in the 2D series. Better soundtrack and more diverse environments than the others too. The shrinking mechanic is better and more profoundly implanted than most other showcase gimmicks of other Zeldas also. Nothing copy and paste about it at all. Only Zelda 2 is hard anyway, and the very first because it's outdated.

Wind Waker HD wasn't as much about what "the general public" really wanted, as it was about releasing a decent-selling game quickly. Nintendo was in desperate need for new Wii U games and they were able to develop Wind Waker HD in roughly half a year, so that's what they did.

Did the general public or even hardcore gamers ask for another Luigi's Mansion?
Luigi's Mansion 2 sold really, really well, so yes, apparently people wanted another Luigi's Mansion.

Either that or they truly are just "references"... I mean, if there was a remake of the original Zelda for every time a new Zelda game had a line in it containing "It's a secret to everybody...", I'd have a loooot of remakes.

HE'S GOT A POINT!!! AAAAHH!!!

I really hope they remake it though; I never played the original and it's HIGH TIME I GET A CHANCE.

Wait is it on VC? I don't care either way I'll wait for a remake.

Nintendo has been making references for a long time now. To name a few:

  • Majora's Mask in Skyward Sword Debut Trailer
  • Anju Kafei sidequest cameo in Skyward Sword
  • Symphony of the Goddesses puts in a Majora's Mask medley because of the fans.
  • Aonuma considered Majora's Mask on the 3DS but picked ALttP instead.
  • Majora's Mask was in Animal Crossing shown off in a Nintendo Direct.
  • Majora's Mask OST was given to Nintendo Club members.
  • NoA's twitter posted Skull Kid cosplays during Comic Con.
  • Bill Trinen mentions Skull Kid cosplay during live ALBW preview
  • Majora's Mask was shown in Link's House in A Link Between Worlds.
  • A "3 days" reference was shown in
    Ravio's Diary
    in A Link Between Worlds.
  • The people of Lorule are
wearing masks and worshiping monsters and demons.
  • Milk Bar is in ALBW.
  • The Maimais go back to
their "dimension" and the one left behind is the 72nd
Maimai you found in A Link Between Worlds
  • Skull Kid with Majora's Mask was shown as an assist trophy in SSB4
  • Aonuma said "say that I laughed" when Majora's Mask remake was brought up.
  • Miyamoto said he hasn't forgotten about Majora's Mask fans.
  • Aonuma said ALBW's will tell us if Majora's Mask is being remade. Turns out ALBW has 4 big references to MM.
  • Aonuma says no more Zelda remakes until we have new hardware
  • Aonuma says Wii U Zelda will go beyond expectations and won't be traditional. It'll be "Zelda" regardless of whether Link and Zelda are in it or not.

But what do people make of this quote?

Aonuma: Majora's Mask is a very special game - it's the real hardcore who like that one. If we were to make a remake of that one then we wouldn't want to let them down. We'd have to put our heart and soul into it. So, you say you’ve heard rumours, but I have to say it would be quite a commitment to do that.

I think if MM gets the same treatment as OoT 3D did and is developed by Grezzo, that is fine enough with me. There's enough content in the game even for today's standards, so I'm certain that even newcomers will love it.

But if there's a way to make significant enhancements to the game without taking precious manpower away from the Zelda U development team, why not do it? Just make sure that Zelda U's development doesn't suffer from it.

Even more references in the game! I think he just doesn't want to disappoint the loyal MM fanbase, knowing how vocal and opinionated they are online. I don't see how there's much room for failure given that it's just a simple remake made even easier by recycling OOT 3D assets, and that game turned out fine.

Okay so...

Get all 100 Maimais and then talk to Ravio. Then go talk to the Mama Maimai. She'll say it's time to go back to "their dimension" when you leave the cave you'll see a big flash from the cave. Reenter and you'll see a baby maimai that was left to become the next mama Maimai. Talk to her and she'll say "I'm the 72nd maimai you found." 72nd. 72 hours remain. NINTENDO!

When you have finished their quest go back into the cave for an extra scene.

Sweet, thanks guys. Just did it but I have to admit I didn't get the 72h reference until you mentioned it. It seems like a very specific easter egg in the feeling that we'll see the mainmai's again n a future game..set in termina. That poor lil maimai just didn't want to get crushed by the moon hehe.

Hmm, I wonder if they'll keep their word on this, he didn't say no for definite, just a might not. The 3ds needs some support for the next few years while they try and support wii u so MM 3DS would be ideal for the situation. But then again, it would be much better on new ninty hardware in a few years time. Of course all the operation moonfall supporters would lose their minds having to wait that long after all this teasing.

I'm pretty sure the specific quote was no more remakes until an original game is released. Hence ALBW filling that quota for the 3DS. if MM remake is for WiiU then it'll most likely be after Zelda U. But all indication is a 3DS remake which is ready to go now that ALBW is done.

Personally i can't wait for a MM 3D remake. I haven't played this game, and i believe if it's a remake as good as OOT3D, i can wait to play it.

OOT3D is probably my favorite 3DS game, and one of the best experiences on the platform overall, so having MM also would be amazing.
