UK Retailer: Mario Kart 8 Last Chance for WiiU

The biggest names at games retail – talking under the condition of anonymity – say a significant price cut and a bundle with upcoming blockbuster Mario Kart 8 will help alleviate short-term issues surrounding Wii U.

“A sub-£200 machine will help, and Mario Kart is desperately needed to reach the fans,” said the games boss of one of the UK’s biggest retailers. “We also need something revolutionary that makes use of the second screen and has mainstream appeal, which is easier said than done.”

The top buyer at one online games store added: “There is only one real last chance for Wii U and it is Mario Kart 8. It could still be the game that sparks interest in Wii U, but it would need to be combined with a more mass market retail price.”

gg no re?

Doesn't matter if the console gets good games if no retailer is willing to stock the thing after MK8 bombs.

I fear that this year could be the last of the WiiU. Doesn't seem to be a great deal in the pipline for next year, and with next to no third party support, the WiiU is doomed.

I will still hold on to mine though. Very underrated console and some great games for it, just sad it was out too late for its own good...

It won't be the last year, but don't expect anything but Nintendo games. Even when the writing was on the wall about the Dreamcast being doomed, we still got some fantastic games. It will be the case here, just accept it will be gone before it's time more than likely.

Dreamcast had a significantly better library.

It's Nintendo sneaky long term plan. They've opened their own shop and have the eShop. Soon one will have to buy games only from Nintendo so they get all the profits (and The Hut too since they run Nintendo's web store).

I would say it may be Game. My local one has a tiny WiiU section, and lumps the Wii games in the same place.

They have more shelf space for Call of Duty!

GAME is specialist and I'm pretty sure Tesco are the biggest retailer for videogames over here now. I can't see GAME ever saying the system needs to go down in price when they enjoy pricing things at RRP regardless of everyone else slashing the prices down.

But I thought the holidays was Wii U's last chance?
Or maybe Nintendo will stop paying retailer to put Wii U on shelves after MK8.

I cannot wait for the consumer reviews for Mario Kart 8.

"This game is not working on my Wii. I bought this for my son and the game doesn't register. We have perfectly working controllers here and I don't think I need the WiiU controller to play this, but it seems that it requires the controller. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU HAVE WIIU CONTROLLER. I will return this to amazon ASAP."

Gahiggidy's Gamecube Hut will usher in a new era of prosperity.

I will be incredibly surprised if Mario Kart turns it around.

I don't think any new iterations in old franchises are going to make any difference. They need something new and something interesting.

How big was the GCN bump when Double Dash dropped? That's probably what we're looking at here.
You have to consider that Mario Kart is a far bigger franchise now than 2001.

Obviously, one game won't turn around things, they need to combine this with a good lineup for the rest of the year, a good price, constant marketing, and so on, to achieve "ok" sales.

Mario Kart Wii is one of the greatest selling games of all time, selling just over 34 million. Mario Kart 8, a game I am very much looking forward too, won't even sell 1/20th that. Retailers will see that as an excuse to drop this pathetic platform.

It will get a spike, but it will return to shit levels after that.
It's really sad, but there's no saving the Wii U.

I plan to get one near it's end though. $199 would be a good deal.

People are still having trouble with the Gamepad = addon thing?

Aren't these people starting to ask themselves why Nintendo is waiting so long to release a new console? :p

Mario Kart only became a really big thing with DS.

Thing is it also seems to be a game that people will buy if they have the system but not necessarily buy the system for. People bough MKDS and Wii but they already had the system.

A better reference would be MK7 that was actually outsold by 3DLand.

Same at my largest local Tesco. There are a total of 3 Wii U games nestled away amongst the old Wii section. There is no hardware or accessories for sale.

Mario Kart, and to a lesser extent, Smash Bros and (new) Zelda will make or break the Wii U. If the Wii U doesn't recover somewhat after those hit, it never will.

Mystery Retailer said:

The screen is a horn. What more do you want?

Im honestly shocked that the WiiU is getting a last chance. I would of though the sales of 3d world was the nail in the coffin.

It actually has decent odds of things picking up this year too. Its never going to be a sales juggernaut but MK8 might on its own push it above the gamecube at least.

The problem is the Wii audience is not aware/interested/simply not on Wii U.

Personally I think Wii U is beyond it's last chance here in the UK. It's already over.

It's still a worthwhile purchase though

The problem is that and much more. From a retailer perspective I would drop the Wii U and Vita, two systems I love very much. I can't imagine either of these have been worth the shelf space.

Broken Joystick

At least you can talk. Who are you?
Mario Kart was always the last chance, I was never too sure why people thought "DK would save Wii U" or "3D World would save Wii U" "Bayo2 will save Wii U" etc, neither of those games have the appeal that Mario Kart has. If it does bomb, people will inevitably say "Smash Bros will save Wii U", but again, that doesn't have the appeal Kart does.

I know I'll be picking Kart up day one, they really need to nail this right, marketing and everything. Needs its own bundle too.

Unfortunately, we also have to consider that now, portable Mario kart is a main one, meaning this will be the second MK this gen..

But indeed i think MK is the true and only Nintendo ip that can reach people outside of their fans. Cause there is a tradition of Mario Kart weed parties in colleges etc.. But that began with the N64 i think. So the NGC version is still relevant to show it doesn't save a console. Now who knows...

MK8 will simply be another "gem" for us, Nintendo fans.
No turnaround for WiiU will come with it. I will just enjoy this stream of nice WiiU games and wish the next Nintendo console will do better.

This is the mindset every Nintendo fan should have now. Thinking anything will turn the Wii U around is just foolish.

It's over for the WiiU in the UK. Deader then A line flares with pockets at the knees.

I would add Smash to the List , but i agree. Those two games need to dramatically increase the amounts of hardware units sold.
