I'm not one for horror games but I really like the concept and themes of the games, and really appreciate the direction it's taken in its horror elements and experience.
SH4 wasn't intended to be an SH game but during development was given the SH title. Shattered Memories is a 're-imagning' or the events of Silent Hill 1.

If you're considering getting into the series go for these versions of the games:
Silent Hill 1: PSX (Available on PSN)
Silent Hill 2: PS2 or PC
Silent Hill 3: PS2 or PC
Silent Hill 4: PS2 or PC (It's available on JPN PSN interestingly enough)
Shattered Memories is available on PS2, Wii and PSP, PSP ver. is on PSN and is Vita compatible.

There are no HD collections or Compilations of the SH games. None. At. All.

Hands down my favorite game series around, up to about SH4. The music, atmosphere, lore, it all fucked my brain sideways when I first played it but it helped shape a lot of who I am today and what I appreciate in various art forms and entertainment.

Save this series.

Konami should go full Rockstar and make Silent Hill 5, and not count the last 4 as numbered titles.

Also, SH2 > SH3 > SH:SM > SH1.

Nothing worth saying that hasn't been said a million times already. Here's to hoping the franchise continues, although I wouldn't mind if it left Konami's hands.

I'd say SH > SH3 > SH2 >>> SH4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Getting hit in the testicles >>>>>>> SH:SM

I like 2 the best, followed by Shattered Memories. I would LOVE to see an sequel on a next Gen, especially WiiU. I loved that SM didn't use the whole occult angle that the main series did. That was the thing I have disliked about the whole series.

For anyone interested, if you can manage to find copies of the PC versions of 2, 3 and 4 we have an incredible thread to help fix issues, add widescreen support and other niceties. They look gorgeous in 1080p, I think i'm going to break them out and downsample the shit out of them on my new rig.

I wish Konami would sell it to Sony and they could give it to Project Siren. Konami hasn't done anything good for the series since SH3 and I'd rather the series go to a company that can at least handle a goddamn PS2 remaster with a bit of respect. I'll never forgive them for the string of Homecoming-HD collection-Downpour-Diablo clone. Stop it :/

I hope we see a complete reboot of the series this generation, this is one series that badly needs it. I think it would be interesting to see a Silent Hill game in the same vain as Amnesia, but not as restricting to the point where you don't attack enemies.

love the series but this is one anniversary that I hope Konami lets go by quietly.

totally need to find some time to play sh1-3 in the near future though.

There are some statues on the way, Heather and Robbie, but it looks like they totally dropped the ball on Heather despite the solid looking prototype. I'm still getting her due the lack of quality merchandise but it's still really unfortunate.

I was under the impression Konami is still the publisher. Are you thinking of the old development team?

Yeah, they're published by Konami. I'm just saying that the problem for the series came up when they were no longer developed internally. All of the games from last gen were outsourced.

Silent Hill 2 is by far my favorite of the series. I'll never forget the overall experience it offered on my first playthrough.

Such a bummer about the HD Collection, it could have been a great tribute but wound up being a mess.

Silent Hill 2 is definitely one of my favorite games ever, I play through it every single year around Christmastime.

I would love to see the series return with a nice, focused reboot or something, but I dunno, I don't know who would have the ability to parse what made those Team Silent games so great and emulate it properly.

Silent Hill 2 is one of my favourite games of all time.

It's been surpassed in the horror genre now though. A bit like Resident Evil, I'm happy to just revisit the good ones and accept them as they are than hope for any more quality sequels, remakes and remasters. There are better scares elsewhere these days.

A shame, though.

Was playing the second game last year and someone decided to spoil it for me when I brought it up. Soured it to the point where I couldn't be bothered to continue playing it.

People act like Origins and Homecoming never existed. At least Downpour was pretty good.

Because Origins and Homecoming set the stage for Downpour to be considered "pretty good".

For my part, I hated horror games until I played Silent Hill (1, 2, 3 and I suppose 4, kind of). Then I loved them.

Silent Hill was the first videogame that genuinely terrified me to the point of actually having to turn off the console in order to escape its world.

The developers of the first 2 games were absolute geniuses. Silent Hill 3 wasn't that good (but still an excellent sequel) and although 4 scared the shit out of me, it wasn't nearly as good as 2. Every other Silent Hill released after those has been on a decline in overall quality.

I miss those days.

one of the greatest series of all time. too bad it went to hell.
i remma being terrified in silent hill 2 somewhere where the pyramid head chased you (the basement somewhere - not the hospital) that i had to turn it off.
silent hill 1 and 2 are for sure the games to play before you die. silent hill 3 and 4 are alright but still interesting. never mind the other silent hill games; they suck.

I think that is a fair enough assessment.

SH4 was a pretty bad game, but had some amazing moments especially with the
hauntings
SH3 as well had its flaws, but the
"they look like monsters to you?"
line redeemed the whole thing. It is still one of the best "wait what?" moments in gaming for me.

Origins was solid, but kind of unnecessary. Homecoming was just bad (even if I still kind of enjoyed it) and Downpour didn't feel like a silent hill game to me (and was a technical mess).

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Man, I really need to actually play through some of these games. I've played the first 30 minutes of all of them, but haven't actually finished one.

I remember hearing that the PC version of SH2 wasn't really the most accurate port of SH2, and that the PS2 version's still the one to go with. Is it the same deal with SH3? The PC version of that has higher res textures, but who knows what they messed up in the port?

Well, it did and that is why it is in the state it is in now. Outsourcing which imo hurt the franchise. I really want the franchise to go to Kojima or Team Silent to be honest. Maybe even Platinum Games.

Had a good run from 1-3. 4 was disappointing in comparison but still had really cool ideas, Origins was cool even if it didn't respect the events of SH1 well enough. The series sort of went too left field for me after these games. RIP in peace.

Silent Hill 2 will always be one of my favourite games, period. 1 is also extremely good.

Vincent was an incredible antagonist. A total asshole, only gave a damn about himself, soon as shit started hitting the fan he wanted out. Every single encounter with him was like oil and water, his creepiness was human rather than paranormal and gave him such a stark contrast to everything else.

The sad thing is that all signs pointed toward Team Silent actually having a last gen version in development. There were some old interview with Tsuboyama where he talked about the current platforms at the time and also discussed how they were looking into playing with sunlight in the series. He also hinted that people should attend E3 2007. But that ended up being where Homecoming was unveiled.

So, it would seem that Konami just killed off the Team Silent project in favor of outsourcing. It wouldn't have been the first time that gen that they would've done that. IGA's team announced and showed a new Castlevania trailer at TGS 2008

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5cANFk2FRE

That would end up being canned as well in favor of the Mercurysteam CV.

Konami doesn't really know what to do with the series (and god forbids Kojima gets his hands on it), they should let it rest for... a lot of time or so. There is just too much negativity around it, SH fanbase is a tough bitch.

... or they can get Toyama again, but I don't see it happening soon.
