Spencer: Black Tusk E3 '13 teaser was "a concept piece", not a in-dev game

read the OP. spencer claims it was never an actual game. all signs point to it being cancelled, if it really was a game. it doesn't mean they won't visit it in the future, but don't get your hopes up.

I did read the op, but i'm confused. I remember spencer tweeting about the Collaboration between Black Tusk and MS Research, saying that the gameplay was interesting. Wouldn't you need a game to show gameplay?

This is the tweet i'm talikng about:

100 million, gone. On Gears. I'm sure MS will get their money back, but man. What a hit to Black Tusk. We need more NEW IP's.

100 million could have done so god damn much.

This hurts me even more because I really don't care too much about Gears.

The thing is, spending upwards of 100 million on an IP means they're going to absolutely be REQUIRED to milk it as much as humanly possible in order to recoup that payment.

They could have funded other new IP's at Black Tusk instead. Seems wasteful to buy other people's IP's to hand to another development studio. It also puts your revenue from the venture already deeply in the hole.

This isn't Halo we're talking about, which was understandable why they wanted to buy that IP off of Bungie.

It was good, it was real.

Then Microsoft killed it.

I never understood the affection for gears of war, I always thought they were bad games. Something about the weight of the characters and the combat never interested me. This news hurts.

Wow good find. I have to say it is almost certainly the stealth game Phil is talking about there. I severely doubt Black Tusk had gameplay demos in any state up for playing for their Gears game back in Sept.

Talented studio could do wonders for the series, and people using the sales performance of the spin off as evidence of its worth are probably the same that say Halo has run its course and conveniently ignore it's sales. This will most likely be a great game from a studio with immense potential. Don't get the old ip/risk complaints either when MS already announced many new ips last e3 year and most likely will continue to as the gen continues

I think $100mil this day and age is just one AAA game, buying the headline franchise from their last console is not crazy

No and starting up a studio to make Gears games isn't crazy either. It's just disappointing it had to be Black Tusk, which by all accounts had it's own things going on.

Great news for X1 gamers. It's great to see Microsoft not lose any exclusive IP's and hopefully they will build upon their exclusive lineups. This really is the determining factor for me if i ever buy a X1 but stuff like this is what gamers need to see and hopefully more of it.

Microsoft really needs to get Rare into gear and have them make some more AAA titles. I know they are working on that kinect sports game but I am talking stuff like Banjo and Kazooie, Shooters,etc...titles that are more appealing to the traditional gamer audience...there is just too much talent there to be left sitting around like that.

How is it great for xb1 gamers?

They were always gonna get gears, but now they lost a new IP on the way that they would have otherwise.

Only other loser are possible ps4 owners who might have had gears as MP.

Because PlayStation owners can't play it, Xbox owners can enjoy it more!
Yup.
Just like how Titanfall exclusivity is good for Xbox owners. For some reason.

They'll probably get Gears sooner this way. That's good news for Gears fans.

I've only read bits and pieces of the thread, but are you saying that Epic was going to make a new Gears but there was a chance of it going multi so MS bought the rights and gave it to Black Tusk?

I feel like Epic was looking to make a quick buck by selling the stagnating Gears IP for a lot of money to fund future multi-platform games that will give them a large return. Microsoft took the bait. I wish we could have seen the FPS Black Tusk was working on.

It feels like everyone involved - Micorosft, Sony, EA, Activision, you name it - is squandering the opportunity to establish new IPs at the beginning of the console generation. We're just going to continue to beat the same old franchises into the ground. It's really frustrating and unfortunate.

I was only asking because coolasj19 made it seem like folks are excited only because PlayStation users can't play it. If there wasn't going to be a Gears game but now there is then I could see Gears fans being happy about that. If it was going to be multi but MS paid $100mil to keep it exclusive then that does suck. For the record I wanted to see the stealth game too.

Sony has The Order. EA has Titanfall. Microsoft has Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break.

At the same time it is kind of annoying to see Killzone 4, Uncharted 4, Gears of War 4, etc, etc. There was a time when old IPs actually got dropped when a new generation arrived.

I only hate it in the context of people saying that it's "great news for XB1 gamers". Most of them never say but I project implied thoughts that some fear that Gears was going multiplatform and that it somehow makes the theoretical game better because it wasn't going to PlayStation. It's silliness and it drives me up the wall.

For the most part I assume that Gears was always going to eventually get a new multiplatform installment. And if someone had prefaced their line with anything implying that the game never would have been made without Microsoft, I would be more than fine with that.

So now what we have is that MS burned money on an old IP, is making their new studio scrap their new IP, and do Gears. And then we have people saying it's great news not because the game would never have been made without Microsoft, but because Gears will stay Xbox Exclusive. It reeks of fanboyism.

MS : Quantum Break. Sony : The Order. EA : Titanfall. Ubisoft : Watchdogs. Activision : Destiny.

There are new IP. There are plenty of new IP. If the pre-existing ones have to hit first so an audience can be guaranteed, I'm totally fine with that. If anything this is good, for example if rumour is to be believed, EA will now be on a three shooter rotation. Destiny will be a constant multi year, year round effort. What if Watchdogs alternated with Assassin's Creed? I would love if Quantum Break alternated between DLC and a TV season. And The Order has me excited. TV opportunities and who knows, maybe it'll be Sony's Assassin's Creed.

The people I'm least excite for is MS. Because Remedy takes forever, and now instead of
Halo, Forza.
Black Tusk IP, Forza.
It's just going to be a repeat of the 360 era. That is the most reasonable conclusion. Black Tusk was making "The Next Halo". The big thing that Halo would alternate with, and now it's out the window. And it sincerely disappoints me.

What I just said applies to this too. But I get the feeling of the new IP take off, we'll see a major shift away from the old ones. Especially Killzone.

Is it seriously so hard to not lie, Microsoft.

Like, own up to a single thing. At least once. It'd do some good for the image of you having an insurmountable mountain of fucking hubris.

Why is he lying?

Damage control. It sounds better to say it was a concept instead of "We didn't believe in their vision, Gears sells better and so on". Saying that MS feels it would be better for Black Tusk to work on Gears then their own IP doesn't exactly signal super confidence in the development, and could easily be misunderstood. So doing this doesn't sound terrible in the public.

If they were going to lie they should have come up with something we couldn't easily disprove with a Google search. They could have just said that they're still working on the other project and wait for people to forget about it or lose hope.

It is baffling to me that the Xbox execs all seem to lie as a first impulse, even in cases where what they say is demonstrably false, and easily proven so. It would be so easy to craft a plausible explanation: "We're really excited by the talent at Black Tusk and as soon as this deal came together it became obvious we needed out best developers working on a project as massive and important as the next Gears of War. The team in Vancouver has a bright future that includes both the stewardship of Gears and their own original concepts. We can't wait to share more!" That took me a minute to compose, no lies required and it sounds really positive.

Talented studio could do wonders for the series, and people using the sales performance of the spin off as evidence of its worth are probably the same that say Halo has run its course and conveniently ignore it's sales. Yeah, not sure why people would correlate the declining sales in the series coinciding with both franchise fatigue and a move to a new studio with moving it to another, even less proven studio for even further exploitation of a concept clearly fraying at the edges. I guess we'll know more in 2017 when this game actually comes out.

I don't think Xbox One owners really care that the game is not coming out on PS4.

You say there are two choices:

A: Gears of War was coming out to PS4 and XB1 and Microsoft swooped in to buy the IP and make sure it was only coming out on XB1.

B: Gears of War was set to become a dead franchise and Microsoft swooped in to buy the IP and revive the franchise.

Whether A is true, or B is true, does not affect my enjoyment of the Gears franchise, whatsoever. I think in either case, Gears is a great franchise and any new next-gen installment is going to be crazy good.

But it was just your hunch about potential fanboys. Cool enough. So what do you think happened? Epic had a multi Gears release in development, MS stepped in, bought the rights, Epic stopped working on the multiplatform and MS turned the game over to Black Tusk? Crazier things have happened.

There is no way Microsoft bought a "dying" IP out of the goodness of their hearts, they definitely saw more money in the franchise (whether that exists remains to be seen). To them keeping Gears out of Sony platforms seems to be imperative, superseding the creation of new IP and probably cost them a buttload of money they would have spent fostering developers making said new IPs.

I have never really had much interest in the Gears games, but I guess its nice for the people who love the franchise. Its sad to me that CBOAT was obviously excited about Blacktusks spy game, and this news definitely means enough to him to start posting about it here.

I avoided saying it because it's a strawman to myself, but fanboys. It's fanboys I hate so much right now. And they came out of the woodwork today.

Thanks for putting my thoughts into options. You wrote it better than I. Here's the problems I have with both of those.

A : I have a problem with anyone proclaiming that "this is great news for XB1 owners" with this scenario. The theoretical game is not better because it's not on PlayStation. This one grinds my gears with the obvious fanboyism. If anything should be said, it should be that it's "great news for Microsoft".

B : Good news. Microsoft bought an IP and is now going to make a game that was never going to make without their intervention. Here's where I have a personal problem. Black Tusk's new IP, that was set to be the new Gears, has been now scrapped, and is being replaced, with the old Gears. I don't like Gears, and not only that, I like new IP because they are healthy for the industry and even if I did like Gears, I would prefer a new experience without a doubt. There is nothing gained from this option that benefits me personally, or even Microsoft in the long run. Sure Gears is a billion dollar franchise, but Black Tusk's game had that potential too.

Option A deprived a certain section of people from playing the new Gears. Option B offered a new IP up as a sacrificial lamb for an old IP.

What I think happened, is that if MS didn't buy the GoW IP, it would have had some form of muktiplatform release. Maybe next year, maybe in 3 years. It's entirely possible it never would have gotten a multiplatform release.

What I do know what happened, and it's not the multiplatform denial that gets me, the IP acquisition was good bussniess for Microsoft assuming that they never would have used that $100 Million >= $0 on something else, is what absolutely kills me the most. Black Tusk was making a new IP for MS. This IP was going to take Gears place in the rotation. But now it's gone in favor of more Gears of War entries. And not only that (I know it's irrelevant), Phil Spencer is lying right to our faces about it. That's the cherry on top.

The "We need to foster good studio culture" and "The online hate needs to stop" cries now ring more hollow than ever. Yeah Phil, foster good culture by canceling your new studios IP and making them tread old waters. Yes Major, the online hate needs to stop while your company lies to our faces. It's infuriating, and frustrating, and all the signs of progress and change from the Xbox division continue to evaporate.

Like the other poster said, option B is junk. Microsoft didn't revive a dead franchise. They secured a new exclusive. Option A is the only plausible real-world scenario. Your comment about option A is absolutely ridiculous - it puts the onus on XB1-only fans to "lament" the fact that PS4-only fans will not be able to play Gears.

Hell yes this news is great - it confirms a new Gears is coming, it confirms a talented group of internally-groomed developers will handle the series (Black Tusk) and it confirms Rod Ferguson will positively influence the development of the game from start to finish.

But it's mixed with a hefty amount of bad news as well: Black Tusk's original IP looks to be dead (at the worst) or on the backburner (at the best).

The game not being on PS4 is not bad news, from my perspective. I'm someone who is going to eventually own both systems.

To be fair - I haven't really seen these posts that have drawn your ire. Maybe if you link them I'll have a better idea of where you're coming from. I fully agree that this Gears acquisition is a case of Microsoft paying for a game to NOT be on another console. My contention is - why should XB1 owners care?

Killzone is pretty much done for, unless the sci-if FPS becomes popular again. It was always meant as a answer to Halo and a graphical showcase, but it's pretty clear now that it can't rival Halo and Naughty Dog can make showcase games going forward. I wonder what The dev studio will make next?

Ubi has Watch Dogs, The Crew and the Division coming.

They were? Who was making the next Gears? Epic sure doesn't seem interested in making games right now and Gears leaves a pretty massive hole in Microsoft's lineup. This isn't just about keeping Gears away from Sony, it's also about not letting Gears sit on the sidelines

I doubt a multiplatform release was ever a possibility. I believe MS has publishing rights that included a right of first refusal which meant any time Epic wanted to make a new Gears game MS got to publish it if they wanted. Only if they passed could Epic shop it around to someone else. As this purchase demonstrates, MS wants more Gear games, so they'd never pass on the option to publish and allow it to go multiplatform through someone else. Unfortunately for MS if Epic didn't want to make another Gears game there was nothing they could do to get one. With Epic moving on and a lot of the talent behind Gears already having left, buying the franchise off Epic was the only way MS could keep Gears games coming. Epic, perhaps cunningly recognizing Microsoft's desperation, saw an opportunity to squeeze a lot of money out of a panicked Microsoft for something they weren't going to use.

I hope so. Cause this stuff can't keep flying. No wonder people working in this industry can be so miserable. It's like being a teacher, you have to get more joy from making games or teaching, than the hardships you have to endure for putting up with the low pay and bullshit. What a shame that a studio has had its plans shuttered after only a few months.

Assuming Option A correct, you now have 1 less IP to play. We all, get one less IP to play. One major, AAA IP. One that was going to get multiple installments no less. That, is confirmed. Instead of getting both a new Gears and a new IP on the same scale of Gears, you only get one set of games based on a single IP. That's why, XB1 owners should care.

I'm not doing that right now because I'm on mobile and multi-quote doesn't work with my browser/phone. But it's rampant in the original thread that started it all for today.

Sci-Fi RPG is the going rumour if I recall. And yeah, Killzone is probably dead now I like to predict.

I can see so many ways that buying the Gears ip could backfire for them, but then again, it might work for them.

Judgement wasn't exactly one of the best games in the series, and people might not be too inclined to jump straight on a new game in the series when they remember what Judgement was like. There isn't much they can do story-wise either, bar retconning the shit out of 3, or sticking to more prequels.

And, as others have said, what if Epic never even intended on devving another Gears game? All those subtle hints of a PS4 Gears collection could have been bait, to entice MS into panic-buying the Ip, then using the 100mill to make a new multiplat game. Epic may have tricked MS into indirectly funding a non-exclusive game, or possibly even a PS4 game.

Still, shame there won't be a Gears collection on the PS4, but The Order looks to scratch that itch anyway.

Still so many Xbox 360 owners that have yet to upgrade, bringing back the familiar will definitely help with their next gen purchase. It was a good move.

Yeah, not sure why people would correlate the declining sales in the series coinciding with both franchise fatigue and a move to a new studio with moving it to another, even less proven studio for even further exploitation of a concept clearly fraying at the edges. Decline in sales for a spin off not a proper entry, ODST didn't do anywhere near the same numbers as other Halo games but the flawed analysis of gamers here used it to judge the series popularity just as many are doing with gears, then the following Halo entries accumulated massive sales. I don't believe the franchise in sharp decline and a next gen version is a perfect opportunity to reinvent the series which I believe blacktusk are excited to do. Ron back at the helm would also encourage the talent there.

That's one heck of a long troll. That would be the most Epic troll of all time. Then again, it's also as possible as someone's theory that Judgement was MS's attempt to devalue the IP so they could buy it on the cheap.

Decline in sales for a spin off not a proper entry, ODST didn't do anywhere near the same numbers as other Halo games but the flawed analysis of gamers here used it to judge the series popularity just as many are doing with gears, then the following Halo entries accumulated massive sales. Do I don't believe the franchise in sharp decline and a next gen version is a perfect opportunity to reinvent the series which I believe blacktusk are excited to do. Ron back at the helm would also encourage the talent there.

ODST was announced as an inexpensive standalone expansions, but then they decided to bundle in the same Halo 3 multiplayer everyone already had in order to jack it up to full price. It's sales were always going to be crappier. In any case, I didn't say anything about ODST, but if we want to talk about Halo we can always look at the overall downward trend since 3. Like Gears, it's a franchise that has not aged well aesthetically and both have worn their gameplay loops pretty thin.

But I don't know what you expect to be the difference between this new game and Judgement, both have the same problem of the finality of Gears 3. It will probably be a spin-off or reboot or prequel as well. And I'm sure the guys at Black Tusk who just received a gut-punch in the form of their work of the last 3 years being shelved really enjoy having you speak on their behalf in this manner. I'm sure knowing you're out here putting words in their mouths is a comfort to them as they start getting their CVs in order.
