Phil Spencer: Still have flagship games in development; "new IP critical"

Those tweets sound like the fanbase is annoyed, maybe? I'm glad my PS4 has Shu on the job. I think his body of work is way better. Phil seems to now be aware of sequel fatigue yet Halo and Gears are on the way so soon.

A lot, actually.

If we look at the pool of independent 3rd-party devs that have been contracted by Sony, Nintendo & MS throughout their years of partnership, we cannot discount the possibility that any of them could start working on exclusives for *insert platform*, bar devs that have tied into multi-year/game agreements. ( Quantic Dream, Housemarque, Undead Labs, etc )

There's nothing stopping MS from trying to court Ready at Dawn to make exclusives for Xbox, just as there's nothing preventing Sony from trying to get in bed with Remedy. Just because devs have historically worked and favoured certain first-party publishers doesn't exclude them from working with other publishers.

Of course, there's always the chance but I meant more realistically. While QD or RaD could certainly switch to Xbox or Remedy to PS, they have a pretty strong relationship with Sony/MS. They're not like Insomniac who had been voicing their discontent with Sony for a while beforehand.

The Platinum game rumor is one that comes to mind. What other third party devs might MS contract.

I feel that the call on Black Tusk was the right one. I just think minimalizing their new IP efforts as "assets" was kinda shady. He's got a tough road ahead for sure, but MS seems to have recovered quite a bit since Mattrick resigned. Sales over the next few months should give us more info on how hard it'll be for MS this generation. I can't wait for March NPD.

I'm not to happy about it but it certainly was the right call. I think most of the issue lies in the way he/MS handled it

Ninja Theory would be a good one for MS I think.

Did you miss him explaining subsequently that his answer only referred to the Easter Egg?
Yup. :)

Still don't see Uncharted 4 making this year. Huge difference between their reveals and a teaser that took 5 minutes in FSP.

I'm also pessimistic that Halo makes this year. It's only been 2 years since Halo 4. Unless 343 farmed off some of it.

Development started before Halo 4 shipped, and they're utilizing the same engine with modifications made, no need for rebuilding from ground up. Microsoft also needs that big blockbuster this Fall, nothing else in sight. I'll be surprised if it's pushed back.

I'd say tri-Ace is a potential dev from Japan, if only because the no.of independent devs capable of building AAA-tier JRPGs in Japan can probably be counted in 1 hand.

phantom dust is so random to bring back.i hope conker returns along with mech assault.

His body of work on the PS4 that currently consists of Knack and Killzone?

Let's continue to pretend indie and F2P games don't exist, or that these consoles didn't just launch. Or that he hasn't also helped the PS3 or Vita in this regard.

Anyway, I honestly think pushing Black Tusk on to Gears was a bad move. They probably spent a lot on the Gears acquisition, and lost a lot on the game Black Tusk were already working on for years that is now effectively axed. My guess is Microsoft didn't have much confidence in what they were making.

I'm any case, I don't have much faith that Sunset Overdrive will set the world on fire, but Quantum Break could be great. I suspect it will end up being Microsoft's version of Heavy Rain or Beyond, but more action orientated.

Sure, because Sony only publishes games on PS4 and nothing else, right?

I could see Black Tusk becoming a gears farm similar to 343 and Halo. I want to believe that won't be the case but I have a hard time doing so. That shelved IP could always go to another studio

I agree on Sunset Overdrive. Had they announced it back in 2009/10 I would have been excited but Insomnaic has been a rather mediocre dev for a long while now, ever since they hit their peak (imo) with ACiT

So how many first-party (Microsoft owned studios) games are in dev for Xbox One, and how many are new IP's?

Kinect Sports, Fable, Forza (unconfirmed but probably), Halo, and Gears. No new IPs first party wise (I think). There's also whatever Twisted Pixel and Press Play do next

Project Spark.

I knew I was missing something. Are there any others?

I could have been clearer. Shu manages output for PS3, Vita, and PS4 and has done a sterling job for many years with very few slip ups (missing on Demon's Souls and Last Guardian development hell). But I play a lot of great games on Playstation. Considering that I think the PS4 is in great hands. The Order, indies, and many new IP will be on the way. Shu is the better director hands down IMO.

So, is Microsoft bringing any First party new IP's that we know about? I just realised all the ones presently are third party new IP's, and have the potential to be on other platforms at a later stage.

Edit: Yes Project Spark, forgot about that.

quantum break is owned by MS. supposely lionhead is working on new ip.

Not anything that has been officially announced yet. It seems like all three of the platform holders are being careful with internally developed new IPs... for now.

Are there any first party studios we know of that could be cooking something up?

let's just say Shu & Phil right now are great for each community so there is no cat fighting both guys are awesome, lol.

Both guys aren't awesome enough (for me, anyway), they still don't have the Nintendo touch to be able to consistently deliver high-quality stuff that one can have very high faith in the final product.

Lionhead is supposedly working on a new IP.

Maybe:
Twisted Pixel: Released Lococycle last year. Haven't announced anything new yet.
PressPlay: Released Max last year. Haven't announced anything new yet.

I find it strange no one questioned sony when they announced yet another uncharted and infamous e.t.c, where are sonys new ips (based on game announcements we know not tech demos).

Probably because last geny sony was killing it with new ips compared to microsoft (especially the last few years), but nothing from this gen says that microsoft isn't trying to turn it around.

MS :

- Quantam Break
- Sunset Overdrive
- Ryse
- Crimson Dragon
- Project Spark

Sony has

- The Order
- Driveclub
- Knack

What else is a known unique ip for sony ? Its a serious question as i might have missed some obvious ones.

Twisted Pixel is good for at least two new IPs, in addition to Lococycle. They are like Double Fine lite - addicted to making new IPs, but not quite as allergic to sequels.

I hope we see Splosion Man 2 and a couple of more unique, quirky titles from them, like Comic Jumper especially.

Well we know Sony has lot of studios working on PS4 games. They've got SSM, GG second team, Sony Bend (maybe), ND's two studios, MM, Sony London, QD, Sony Japan and various others. They also released like 5 or 6 new IPs last year (Beyond, TLoU, Rain, Puppeteer, Resogun, Knack, anything I missed?)

That probably takes the heat off. With Sony, we know the games are coming. Going by MS first party output listed a few posts above, it's not the same case with. It's especially surprising since MS pretty much dropped the 360 a long while ago.

I pitched the title "Kid Splosion Man" to them a few days ago. They liked it. :p

Sorry forgot about Knack, ill add that , but the rest are last gen , so whilst yes they may be creating new ips, who is to say microsoft arent ?

Everyone just assumes they are lying, guess we will find out at e3 and the coming years. So yeh sony deserves less heat based on there track record, but based on what we have seen thus far it looks like they are at least trying to turn that around.

Hiring phil was a good first step imo.

they revealed multiple games. they arent going to reveal all right away. sony had a lackluster launch vs MS. i remember people thought MS wont reveal new games at e3 last year and a slew of titles were there.

Huge fan of Gears so I'm excited to hear that one is on the way for the XBO. I'll be there day one. I wonder what what new IP they will bring, though.

Confirmed, additional to the above two, we have

- Knack
- The Last Guardian
- Deep Down
- RiME
- Lily Bergamo
- A new IP from Guerrilla Games
- A new IP from Santa Monica
- Two new IP's from Quantic Dream
- A new IP from Media Molecule
- And potentially more from their other studios.

Some of these we're talking big seasoned First party studios on new IP's. There's a crap tonne of other indie titles as well. Galak-Z, The Witness, Transistor, Hohokum and so on.

Well, what Studio do they have that could be doing a new IP?

343 is a Halo factory, T10 is a Forza farm, Black Tusk is now Gears, Rare is on Kinect, and Lionhead is a Fable plant (their new IP probably very far away). So again, what studios of theirs could actually be doing a new IP? Outside of small titles from Press Play and Twisted Pixel, nothing comes to mind

I'm glad Sony didn't drop PS3 as soon as Ps4 was announced, it's not a bad thing at all

just because its far lionhead new ip dont count?seems unfair. phil didnt rule out black tusk making other games.also i think Rare will make a new ip,arent they really big?

It's impossible to have a thread without game list wars.

But I think it does show the difference in commitment to new IP's between the two, and the approaches they take to them. Microsoft seems to feel more confident in letting third parties take the risk on trying new IP's, leaving their first parties to mainly tread old familiar ground, whereas Sony seems to give their first party more leeway to try new things.

Lionhead. And while rare most likely isn't making a AAA game, something along the lines of viva pinata (or just viva pinata 3) would be really cool. Aren't they working on something besides kinect stuff?
So if you dismiss Lionhead the answer is effectively no. What an embarrassment.

Of course it counts but right now we know nothing. For all we know they'll just end up on another Fable (Black Tusk was, after all, originally doing a new IP). We barely know anything about the new Fable let alone their new IP that may or may never exist.

As for Rare, I'm pretty sure they've been put on Kinect only stuff. I don't think they'll be doing much else but who knows. Their old IPs might get farmed out to contracted third party devs (lile KI)

Exactly, and their reliance on third parties is probably going to come back and bite them hard. Like someone else said, they don't have superior multiplats to fall back on anymore

Rare hinted at working on their older ips so i dont think its just kinect. if they can do that then new ips can also be done.
