Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2014 (Jan 20 - Jan 26)

I'll retract my statement that the Wii U will outsell the GC in Japan. I don't think it will survive that far into next year. Not that Iwata or Nintendo really seems to mind. The 3DS is their profit maker going forward and they are basically treating this gen as a transition period.

I still don't understand what/how they're basing digital numbers on.

Presumably they're paying Sony / Nintendo a bunch of money in exchange for monthly eShop / PSN digital sales figures. So the sales figures can be universally applied across all three trackers.

That's not confirmed, though.

Nice that we are getting these but do we have LTD digital sales numbers? I'd love to see how well the wii u/3ds eshop and vita digital sales are doing overall.

Super Mario 3D World is still holding on eventhough it is no longer in the Top 10. Pokemon X & Y is slowly approaching four million copies in Japan is a good thing.

When did DQX V2 come out? I'd also love to know the LTD of both the original and V2 of DQX on Wii U (retail + digital).

It was released on December 5.

By the way, both Wii and Wii U versions sold exactly the same. And yes, it would be interesting to know the digital sales of Dragon Quest X on Wii U to see the percentage of people that upgraded to the new expansion, it must be very high.

[WII] Dragon Quest X: Nemureru Yuusha to Michibiki no Meiyuu Online (Square Enix) {2013.12.05} - 130.425
[WIU] Dragon Quest X: Nemureru Yuusha to Michibiki no Meiyuu Online (Square Enix) {2013.12.05} - 130.155 (retail 80.235 - digital 49.920)

Prediction for 2014:

[PSV] Hardware
[3DS] Hardware
[WIU] Hardware
[PS4] Hardware
[3DS] Super Smash Bros.
[WIU] Super Smash Bros.
[WIU] Mario Kart 8
[3DS] Monster Hunter 4 G

Should I include DQXI or Pokemon Z just in case? =P

I still don't understand what/how they're basing digital numbers on.

Hiska-kun can look in the magazine if there's a different explanation, but last year Famitsu simply said it was based on research with users.

That's what I really don't get. They've basically released none of their big titles and have seemingly given up already. It's weird to me.

They probably don't expect any of those titles to make any type of difference, especially without any 3rd party support and they don't want to invest even more money into something they don't believe in.

DQXI announcement is going to be basic as fuck.

Anyway, DQIX was announced on Dec 12 and DQM Joker released on Dec 28. DQM2 is releasing in a week, so be prepared.

[3DS] Super Smash Bros.
[WIU] Super Smash Bros.

I wonder if Nintendo will release them simultaneously.
LEGO City released first on Wii U, then 3DS.

Unless they're turned into "full" games like PDZ, I can't see anyone (reasonable) suddenly change their stance on mobile games. And then it wouldn't be mobile games anymore.
When mobile games stopped from being time-waster service, I will embrace them
I know that there is mobile games with definite end point. But they are just minority and not exactly the type of game that big publishers aim to create.

The awaited Famitsu Top 30 including digital. Famitsu gives 3 figures for each title. First, retail sales (also includes download codes), then digital sales (on parenthesis), finally the total sales for the month. So it combines the first two figures.

There're two thing I don't understand, Famitsu included week 1, 2014 in this ranking. So, I don't know how they will show the next one. Second, November digital sales are nowhere to be found. Can somebody contact with Famitsu and ask about it (or share a contact mail)?

Here September and October figures:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=91828606&postcount=1016

We can start to add digital sales for titles like Monster Hunter, Pokemon, Animal Crossing and so others. Too bad there's the november gap. :(

Lacking November's numbers, MH4 has done 278,487 digitally, pretty crazy!

Here's the current retail LTD: 3.383.004

Altogether (again lacking November's digital numbers): 3,661,491.

I'm going to assume since Oct's numbers were 433.365 (30.879) / 464.244 and the Dec numbers were 196.642 (22.284) / 218.926, it likely did 25,000 digitally in November, which is funny as look at the gap between retail and digital in those months, the digital drop was very minimal compared to the retail drop.

When mobile games stopped from being time-waster service, I will embrace them
I know that there is mobile games with definite end point. But they are just minority and not exactly the type of game that big publishers aim to create.

At the fastest, when will they announced their next-gen console/handheld that they said being in R&D right now?

At the absolute fastest?

Let's say finish R&D on something end of this year, get third parties involved then (which would be early for Nintendo but late for everyone else), tell other third parties by E3 of next year, and announce it the following start of the year. So...*does math* 2016?

But that would also probably conflict with any introduction of a 3DS successor, unless they were the same system.

At least for the top 30, the amazing download ratio for Vita people were talking about doesn't seem to exist in Japan as of now.
Might be worth waiting a while to build a bigger picture. That said, it's really frustrating that Sony allude to exceptional attach rates and a thriving digital ecosystem but never provide any concrete data of any sort. I suspect that's because the satisfactory numbers are in terms of profit rather than outright units sold.

I'm still semi-inclined to believe that the Vita software picture is not as bleak as the limited physical charts paint it. Third party support (particularly in Japan) is far better than it ought to be (though still nothing to write home about), and the number of niche games being localised for the west is mind-boggling.

I know I have an evident bias, but I do believe that the small pool of Vita owners buy a disproportionate amount of software.

Presumably they're paying Sony / Nintendo a bunch of money in exchange for monthly eShop / PSN digital sales figures. So the sales figures can be universally applied across all three trackers.

That's not confirmed, though.

Why would they do that then give the information away for free?

Does Sony count PS Plus games in the attach ratio? I would guess not.
Well you'd hope not, but when you're scrabbling around to find a positive, who knows?

That's why I wish they'd be a little more frank. Everyone knows the Vita is no success story, there's little need to obfuscate the degree of failure.

The list that Hiska posted is not a Top 30 download numbers, but top 30 combined numbers. I believe that God Eater 2, Madoka and FFX and FFX-2 single releases sold more than 0 digitally in december. Even in the setember and october data, the more niche is the game, more ratio dowload/sold on stores tilted to dowload.

I don't think there's anything weird in that.

Core gamers buy consoles first - so when something is unpopular then it will have lot higher ratio of hardcore owners to typical mainstream buyers than normally.

is 3DS dying too?

It's the fate of all thing living

It's in decline from last last year based on the first couple of weeks, but I think that's normal for its lifespan? Didn't the DS go through a somewhat similar decline at the same age?

Yeah. Attach ratios and total software sales aren't as clear as they used to be with downloads and stuff like PS Plus. A little more clarity would be nice from everyone(of course that is probably not in their best interest).

3d world surpassed Zelda still in november on the all time sales ranking. By the numbers de know for Zelda, 3d world got to be on 10k at the minimum. Pikmin is still higher than that.

And assuming taiko sold something like 500 on its release week, we can pinpoint where w101 is, since taiko never entered the top charts, but wonderful 101 was the last one on the wiiu software top charts, but far below Zelda on its release month (which was 3,5k) só maybe se are talking on something like 2 to 2,5k.

Miku F 2nd delayed from Mar 6 to Mar 27.

Mar 27 - Atelier Ayesha, Hatsune Miku F 2nd, Rokyubu

Top 10 only. Well, without numbers it could go either way. Based on setember and october data, Vita dowload/retail ratio is bigger than the others systems (but not by far). December numbers can tell a different story? Could be.

LEGO City released first on Wii U, then 3DS.

LEGO City Undercover (Wii U) and LEGO City Undercover : The Chase Begins (3DS) are two entirely different games, though they take place in the same city. On the other hand, the two versions of Smash Bros. is (as far as we know) the same game, but with different arenas. So not sure they'd release each version separately...

But even if Nintendo released each game separately, I'm pretty sure people would just wait for the 3DS version (unless it's pushed back to 2015).

Surprised Toushin Toshi got such a sellthrough... then again, I believe they're going for 75k LTD.

Curious about Wii Fit U too (comes out tomorrow), not expecting much but I'm still curious :p

Pretty cool that Youkai Watch is #1, which show the series really has potential (especially with the anime that started a few weeks ago). Still, it's pretty sad the best selling IPs didn't even reach 500k, hopefully 2014 will be better.
