The Light of El Cantare
Wind Rises is going to be in a three-way dead heat with Kizumonogatari and The Dream Machine for 2014 AMovieOTY.

cosmicblizzard was so confident that Titan would run away with AOTY this year :(

Are people doing running tallies of the votes already?

1) From the New World(Shinsekai Yori)
An incredible world-build, superb atmosphere, and a god-like story. All these together only means one thing: anime of the year!

2) Attack on Titan(Shingeky no Kyojin)
This anime has the most perfect 5 first episodes I've ever seen. Despite derailing a little after this, deserves to be one of the animes of the year.

3) Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Gorgeous art with stunning action scenes. Furthermore, it has a wonderful set of characters combined with a solid story. I don't need to say more anything. If you don't know what I'm talking, just watch the damn show.

4) Blast of Tempest(Zetsuen no Tempest)
Despite not having a 2nd cour as good as the 1st one, in overall it was a solid effort from bones.

5) Psycho-Pass
Can't say much, it is a good sci-fi show.

6) The Devil is a Part-Timer!(Hataraku Maou-sama!)
By far the surprise of the year. In my first glance in the synopsis I thought that would just one more comedy show. However, when I started to watch it everything turns out to be much funnier and really well done that I would've imagined.

7) My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru)
Good comedy that reminds another good show(Hyouka).

8) Gatchaman Crowds
Underrated show with unique characters and good plot.

9) White Album 2
Another underrated anime here in GAF. I blame the first series.

The power of the AnimeGAF voting bloc should not be underestimated.

Attack on Titan is still going to rank really highly though, so it's not like it's SAO or anything. More like this year's JoJo.

1. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - An absolute sci-fi masterpiece with ambition that is a rarity in any medium nowadays. It's amazingly consistent in keeping to the interior mechanical art as well as creating a wide array of beautiful backdrops and alien locales. That attention to detail even spread over to how it handled the show's many characters, and it was great to see both sides fleshed out. An incredibly satisfying experience.
2. Aku no Hana

3. Uchouten Kazoku
4. Kyousougiga
5. Rozen Maiden (2013)
6. Love Lab
7. Suisei no Gargantia

Honorable Mention: Valvrave the Liberator - The first half was very entertaining to me at being calculated insanity with silly dialogue and enjoyable twists and turns. I didn't get around to watching the second half, but word of it being dull in comparison to the first half made me lose interest.

Movies/OVA
1. Wolf Children - An excellent family drama of children growing up and a mother accepting the paths that her children choose to take. It's Mamoru Hosoda's most mature film to date and his best at making me ball my eyes out. It also features some of the best montages I've seen in some time. Takagi Masakatsu's music is heavenly.
2. Little Witch Academia

SAO > Attack on Titan. The people have spoken.

I certain prefer it.

Its interesting...I ran a similar poll for a much smaller community (and similar rules) and AoT didn't make the top 10. I was really quite surprised, esp given the generally positive reaction to AoT with this community.

Films/OVAs-

1.Little Witch Academia- Really fluid animation and artistic design helped to elevate fun characters into a great OVA. They accomplished a lot in a short time span and made me want more. More than happy to be supporting the Kickstarter for a sequel

2.Steins;Gate: Burdened Domain of Déjà vu-I liked the different perspective compared to the TV series and I think it works really well as a companion piece.

3.Wolf Children-Really emotional tale even if Ame is an asshole.

TV Series-

1.Battleship Yamato 2199
2.Gundam Build Fighters
3.Hataraku Maou-sama
4.Aku no Hana
5.Monogatari S2
6.Uchouten Kazoku
7.Love Lab
8.Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta
9.Suisei no Gargantia
10.Shinsekai Yori

Thank god I'm not a mod, automatic ban for anyone saying Sword Art Online isn't anything but the worst anime of all time.

I just roll my eyes at people who say that. Unless they've only seen 5 anime. I'm not even sure it was the worst show the season it started. It did include stuff like Nakaimo - My Sister is Among Them! after all.

TV Shows:
1. Space Battleship Yamato 2199
ibk2f0vGF4uLtx.jpg
So much has been said already, so I'll just repeat how this show succeeds with an intriguing and incredibly engaging narrative, a cast of awesome characters (especially the villains) and awesome production values. It is SO GOOD.

2. Rozen Maiden: Zurückspulen
A what-if scenario that turned into something better than the previous TV series (apparently anyway). Atmospheric, a wonderful sense of character growth, and also Miyukichi as Shinku giving me multiple heart attacks are the best things about this show, go watch if you've ever been curious about anything in the franchise.
3. Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta

Was hesitant to watch since the first TV series was AWFUL, but after the staff from Hoshi no Umi took over it became one of the most competent action shows in a while. Great animation, great characters, completely necessary pantyshots, what more could you need?
4. Non Non Biyori
A slice of life show in the refreshing setting of a small rural town with some wonderful atmosphere, the adorableness of Renge and calm pacing similar to that of a show like Aria. Has some wonderful comedy too if you're into that sort of thing.

5. Girls und Panzer
Cute girls in a ridiculous concept that has surprisingly strong direction and tactics involved. Truly moe and warfare were meant for each other, thank you based Humikane.

6. Uchouten Kazoku
You wouldn't expect one of the most endearing tale of family values come from a bunch of goofball tanukis, but here we are now.

7. Jojo's Bizzare Adventure
Battle Tendency is FUCKING RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

8. Kyousougiga
More family values! Now with incredibly strong direction on all fronts with a lovely art style.

9. Minami-Ke Tadaima
The fourth season of one of the best SOL/Comedy shows that is just as strong as its been since it first aired some years ago.

Movies/OVAs:
1. Hidamari Sketch: Sae and Hiro Graduation Special
My absolute favorite anime ever saying goodbye to two of its main characters whom I've grown so attached to over the years. The staff did a fantastic job at adding to the source material and I can say once again that Hidamari Sketch is one of the best examples of how a studio should handle an adaptation. Fuck, it's raining in here again.

2. Wolf Children
Someone told me they'd get me if I didn't put this on my list. (I really loved this movie but I don't know what to say atm because I'm tired as shit).

3. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 2nd A's
A condensed and visually improved version of one of the best TV anime ever. Nanoha will befriend until the day she dies.

Honorable Mention:
Vividred Operation: Kazuhiro Takamura proves that he knows and can bring the butts. It wasn't that great, but it was fun and shameless and butts butts butts. He'll save anime in 2014 with his return to Strike Witches.

Dishonorable Mention:
C3Poo/C3-bu: Somehow the shittiest show featuring the goddess Miyukichi in a year with Devil Survivor 2 and Photo Kano.

Series

1. Space Battleship Yamato 2199
There was no doubt that Yamato was the best anime series to have had episodes come out in 2013 but I probably don't love it as much as some people who have voted for it here have. It does have it warts such as shallow characterization, lame story developments and a really weak ending to the story but the setting and characters kept me engaged enough to get me power through the entire series in a few days. In true space opera tradition, there is a big sprawling world, there are politics and, of course, there is a big intergalactic war. While I wish they would have done more with the toys they had (namely the lore and the characters), I will not complain with the end result. This is the series space nerds have long clamored for and while it is unfortunate that it has to come in the form of a remake of a 30 year old show, you should not let that stop you from experiencing what is likely the best scifi you will get from anime in years.

2. Rozen Maiden: Zurückspulen
Both this and my first place show, Yamato, shows just how effective posting about and talking about a show is inside the AnimeGaf thread. While Yamato had a large snowballing effect where the positive impressions just kept on piling up, the Rozen Maiden flag was held up only by a bunch of people in AnimeGaf but the conversations around it were of a quality so much so that it piqued my interest enough to give it a shot despite the stench of Studio Deen following it. I'm one of those people who came away quite impressed with the first 3 episodes of Director Mamoru Hatakeyama's previous work Sankarea. Overall Deen crappiness dragged that show down in the end but despite the odds, his followup work Rozen Maiden managed to stay engaging all the way through. There is a ton of reasons why it should have failed but Hatakeyama was able to take an exceptionally weak source burdened by a lot of nonsense and tell a very touching story about a former NEET struggling to get his life back together. I have my complaints about the show but I can’t deny its excellence and that’s why its at this position on my list. Anyone reading this owes it to themselves to give it a try and drop by the OT for it.

3. From The New World (Shin Sekai Yori)
Nevermind anime, there is a dearth of intelligent scifi in general so much so that we tend to overvalue the ones that do get drip fed to us. From The New World is one of the rare breed of scifi that actually puts thought into how things work and how everything relates to each other. It tells its deep dark depressing story quite well and despite a bunch of stumbles in the middle, it is a show that I wish they would make more of but realistically will not.

4. Yozakura Quartet
Unlike that other show with good animation and unnecessary fanservice, Yozakura, at least to me, manages to put the whole package together with a fun bunch of characters and without any pretentiousness.

5. Tamako Market
I’m really sad that this show hasn’t really gotten very much attention (it didn’t do so hot saleswise as well). Tamako Market is the first original anime produced by the K-On team at Kyoto Animation (Director Naoko Yamada, Writer Reiko Yoshida, Character Designer Yukiko Horiguchi) and it tells the story of a young girl named Tamako, her family, friends and one really fat bird. I don’t think its perfect by any means nor was it able to capture the near perfect characterizations of the K-On girls but the ensemble cast was strong enough that I cared enough for what happened to them and none of the episodes ever felt boring for me. Perhaps KyoAni should have stuck with a High School setting for the better sales but I admire their guts to set this show in a shopping district and to tell the stories of the people living there. Some people might have been disappointed but I wasn’t and I look forward to whatever next thing this team has in store for us.

Movies

1.The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki
It feels like I’ve been pimping Wolf Children for AOTY for as long as I can remember. This is a beautiful story about the life of a woman who has to, due to circumstances, raise two half-human half-wolf children by herself and the trials and tribulations that follow from that. Its a very human look at parenting complete with the joy of seeing your kids grow up and the pain of having to part with them. It might get flak for being a little too optimistic but I think it is this optimism is what sets it apart. In a world of grim dark, it is always refreshing to see a bunch of people overcome hardship to be happy and embrace the joy of life.

Wolf Children is a once in a generation kind of film and I hope people will get over whatever preconceived notions they have and give it a legitimate shot. I can almost guarantee that you will leave it feeling exceptionally uplifted.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
And now I'll announce the winners of Anime of the Year my vote.

Shows

1. Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku
The best. That's all I need to say.
2. Puchimas
Everything that's great about anime, cute little critters, idols and flash animation.
3. Inferno Cop
They tried to tell me anime was dead. Well this just shows you how much being dead is AWESOME!
4. Love Live
Everything that is also great about anime, CGI dances, silly faces and idol culture.
5. Gin no Saji
You know I realise I watch a lot a stupid light hearted shows so I want to give props to a more serious show that kept my interest. Much like Harvest Moon, it made farming FUN!
6. Kiniro Mosaic
Voting for a show just because it has English girls in it? That's so England!
7. Love Lab
From one of my favourite anime directors (Mitsudomoe, YuruYuri). Dampened a bit by the heavy parts and story progress fell a bit short.
8. Aku No Hana
People will likely not like that I'm voting for this so low on my list but just look at the rest of my votes and you realise it's pretty amazing that such a dark show even got in my top ten! That's meant to be a compliment by the way.
9. Watamote
I guess I enjoyed this because I didn't associate myself with the character. Schadenfreude.
10. Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san
Ultra lewd!

Honourable mentions:
AKB0048 - THIS IS STILL ENTERTAINMENT!
Yama no Susume - This was really cute and almost showed just how padded most shows are when in a few minutes the story had a beginning, middle and end and progressed the storyline enough so you were interested in the next episode compared to the 20+ minutes most shows take. But I suppose because I watched the whole thing in the time it takes to watch one and a bit episodes of a normal show it didn't leave that much of a lasting impression on me. But it got the longest comment from me so that's like a bonus prize!
Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai! - Pure titillation.
YUYUSHIKI - Considering people hate me for my bad puns you'd think I'd rate a show full of yuri and bad puns higher, but the difference is my puns are based on word play I understand! (English)

Films/OVA

1. The Mystical Laws
I've waited a long time to vote for this as I actually saw it in the cinema but had to wait because of the home release rule. Anyway, it's hard to sum up is a small blurb so just read my impressions here.
2. Gintama - Final Chapter The Movie
It's Gintama. And when I thought I knew the ways of Gintama they still managed to surprise me.
3. Saint☆Young Men
Another film about religion, get outta here BGBW with your crazy religious ways!

Honourable mention:
Kill Me Baby OVA - Best show ever amirite (I'm really not doing myself any favours by exhausting this joke)

1. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Finally a good anime adaption of JoJo adventures. The voice actors for pretty much every character were all fantastic, wonderfully camp performances. The show just oozes style and the sound design is fucking awesome, when people punch each other in the face, the exaggerated sound design really helps to make the impact of the fighting bring it to another level since the animation is a bit lacking.

2. Psycho-Pass
Loved this show, it's pretty much the cop anime i've always wanted. GITS always lacked something for me but this show really stuck with me. Good characters and villain.

3. Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Haven't finished this show yet but what i've watched has been really good. We don't get much serious scifi anime these days, at least suited for my tastes but Yamato and Psycho-Pass have been doing a good job of appealing to me.

4. Kill la Kill
This show pretty much brought me back to anime after i had been taking a break for a couple years. Seems like Imaishi Hiroyuki always manages to do that since it happened last time with Panty & Stocking too. And it's pretty much everything i always like about his shows, lots of action, some funny moments and a badass MC.

5. Inferno Cop
Dat plot with a mind blowing twist, dat alpha MC, dat world building, dat broken german ED, dat avantgarde animation, dat tear filled ending, dat everything.

6. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

7. Attack on Titan

Movies/OVA

1. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 3 - Descent
The best film of the trilogy with the best animation. They succeeded with making the eclipse a really twisted event. Still it's a shame that there is that much CG animation.

2. Little Witch Academia

Shows in no order:
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
Hataraku Maou-sama!
Suisei no Gargantia
Kakumeiki Valvrave
Shingeki no Kyojin
Kyoukai no Kanata
Kill la Kill

1. Gargantia

Fantastic mech series that completely blew me away. Fantastic characters, world, and story really made this the one show I looked forward to every week. Easily the best show 2013 had to offer

2. Gatchaman Crowds

Very hit or miss for some people but I really enjoyed this for what it did. Telling a story of super heroes not during a battle but after the victory of one and before the next major one was really interesting and engaged me more then just a 2013 gatchaman reboot I thought would.

3. Log Horizon

The VRMMO show we needed and deserved after that filth SAO last year. Great world, fantastic characters, and just a sense of fun and adventure that most anime don't give outside of One Piece.

4. JOJO Bizarre Adventure

Do you really want me to explain why this show is that good? Do you even pose? The next thing you're going to say is "but jjba is a dumb shonen" and I'd say its a FABULOUS shonen. Don't agree, I may have to kick your ass :p

5. Kill La Kill

While it has its problems, for me KlK has had more hits then misses and is an incredibly enjoyable ride. The action and comedy balance each other really well and the zany over the top animation just makes the whole package work.

6. Sunday Without God

Probably my dark horse on this list, but Sunday Without God was a really original and engaging anime that had me glued to the screen every week. It has its share of problems but its clever writing and story really kept me engaged. If you missed it check it out its one of the better shows no one watched

7. Gundam Build Fighters

YGO meets amazing 2D gundam mech action, what else do you need from an anime? 2D mech animation is so rare that Build Fighters instantly draws you in on that alone. The characters further sell this awesome flashback to the best of gundam series.

8. Silver Spoon

The story of a boy who runs away to agriculture school and attempts to find his place in the world is really engaging. Its easy to sympathize with Hachiken and his predicament and the colorful cast brings out the best in him. From the creator of FMA I expected a lot and this show delivered big time.

9. Majestic Prince

A show that started really damn slow but by the end sold me on cg mech action that it could be just as pretty if not more so then hand drawn action. The first few episodes do it a disservice of being overly comedic with bad action aka everything wrong with cg mecha series. Stick with it though and you'll find a mecha series thats worth your attention.

10. Attack on Titan

While I really enjoyed Senyu, I feel AoT deserved to edge it out on its original premise and ability to get even non anime fans interested. Combine that with one of the best OPs in years and some really dark moments and it's hard to deny AoT a spot.

-------
Film/ova list

Not sure if this first one counts, but Duckroll had it on his list so I'm gonna roll with it

1. Wolf Children

Fantastic story about a mothers love for her two unique children. Emotional, well animated, just an all around beautiful movie.

2. One Piece Film Z

The OP movie we deserved, absolutely bad ass and awesome from start to finish.

---

Now for my smelly eggs of the year, most disappointing/worst anime of the year

1. Kickheart

Screw this unfinished garbage, this is anime so poor it lowers the bar for bad anime lower then I ever thought possible. Don't pass off your half assed and unfinished animation as a style poor work isn't an art its lazy. Horribly unfunny humor and a stupid premise that got worse the second time I saw it. I can't think of anything positive to say about this trainwreck. The world would be a better place had Kickheart not been created.

2. Aku no Hana

A show so ugly I couldn't finish a single episode, it doesn't matter how good your story or characters are when the main draw of anime (the animation) is so freaking ugly that it makes my soul cry. Its too bad as the story is good and deserved better art then it got.

3. Not Popular

A good show, but a show that made me feel horribly uncomfortable that I had to quit half way through one episode. Having been someone who felt that alone and depressed and having almost killed myself when in that place I can't in good faith watch a show where I'm meant to laugh at someone in a similar spot.

4. Fantasita Doll

I walked in expecting YGO meets card captors and what I got was boring magical girl and friends with bad fights, bad comedy, and a dumb plot.

5. Valvrave

S1 would have made my top 10, S2 completely fell apart and ruined what was otherwise a really entertaining series.

---

Honorable mentions

Senyu- hilarious show but got edged out by AoT

Day break illusion- I've not seen madoka so any comparisons or rip off comments are lost on me. I just found an action packed and fun magical girl series not great but enjoyable.

Magi- subpar adaptation for a fantastic manga, still enjoyed it but can't deny its problems

The below are all series I saw one episode, liked but haven't seen enough to properly judge

Tokyo ravens
Unbreakable machine doll
Quartet

And only saw 1 episode but thought was meh

BlazBlue

Would have been on my film of the year if I wasn't waiting for the dubbed version because I can't deal with Goku's Japanese voice

DBZ Battle of Gods

1. Love Lab
Funny, good characters, didn't have a shitty ending.

2. Psycho Pass
I didn't vote for this last year, as it hadn't ended. This got better as it went along, and was easily one of my most enjoyed anime this year.

3. Fate Illya
Magical girls doing magical doings with each other.

4. Railgun
Mikoto being a super strong idiot is fun to watch.

5. Kill La Kill
Exactly what I expected. Love everything about it.

6. Fucked Up Love Comedy
Hachiman carrying the entire show on his back.

7. Muromi-san
Hilarious.

8. Outbreak Company
Also hilarious, but the ending was shit.

9. Tokyo Ravens
Kon a cute. Natsume a cute. Extremely entertaining, but ongoing.

10. Noucome
Funny, but the ending was shit.

Honorable Mentions (in no particular order)
Senran Kagura
Saki
Katsuragi DaGod
Neptunia
RKB
Genei Taiyo
CG Sub Waifus
Hataraku Maou
Unbreakable Machine Dolls

Everything here was enjoyable, but didn't stand out enough to beat other stuff.

Tomodachi wa Mahou
1. Gundam Build Fighters ; best Gundam TV series ever made. I really feel that way about this show. The battles are amazing, the series has the best romance ever portrayed in the history of Gundam, the relationships between all their characters and between their Gunplas is top notch. I am not a Gundam fan but this show really is great. Bearguy San might be the best Gundam ever made.

2. Kill la Kill ; I have never been an Imaishi fan in the slightest but I really love this show. The characters are great, Mako is one of the most enjoyable characters I've ever seen from an anime series. The fights are quite enjoyable and the entire tone of the show is up my alley. It's been a blast.

3. Aku no Hana ; Absolutely fantastic. This series is so well made and has an impact emotionally that I really didn't get from the manga.

4. Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru ; I put this show off for months because I thought it was just another Haganai type of show. But its so much better than Haganai ever wished to be. The main character is actually a character within the series rather than just a blank slate which is how it went in Haganai, and its for the better. The banter between the characters is great and I don't actively hate any of the characters in this show (Fuck Meat). I really hope this show gets a second season because I really want more of this.

5. Silver Spoon ; Terrific show. Great cast of characters, really good comedy and some themes that you really see much in anime. This show doesn't really try to do too much, its just the exploration of different young peoples lives and where they're going crossed with the daily farm life.

6. Golden Time ; More so than any other show on my list, I'm really torn about how I feel about this one. This was going to be way higher up on my list until -that- thing happened and while I still enjoy this show quite a bit its hard to just ignore the elephant in the room.

7. Hataraku Maou-sama! ; Emi > Chiho. Nuff said.

8. Suisei no Gargantia ; Chamber and Amy made this show for me. This show was at its best when it was the relaxful ARIA S3 instead of the serious all dorama shit that it was at different times in the show.

9. Psycho Pass ; Fuck the haters. I can't wait for S2. I really enjoyed the setting of the series and really hope they deliver more on the world itself in S2.

10. Date a Live ; Another show that gets a bad rap because its premise is ridiculous in the write it off kind of way. But pretty much everything not involving Origami is great.

1. Hunter x Hunter - One of the greatest shounen of all time. The Chimera Ant arc is excellent so far.

2. Kill la Kill - Really fun and over the top, with a few misteps here and there

3. Monogatari Series: Second Season - Dat Kaiki

4. The Flowers of Evil (Aku no hana) - Fantastically directed by Nagahama. I just wish the ending was good. Season 2 when?

5. Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen - An alternate world where Rozen Maiden is actually good!

6. From the New World (Shinsekai Yori) - Very well written, but suffered some production issues.

7. Girls und Panzer - Even though only two episodes aired in 2013, that last tank battle was really good.

8. The Eccentric Family (Uchouten Kazoku) - Cute, charming and emotional.

9. Chihayafuru 2 - The pacing in some the matches were pretty slow some of the time, but I still really enjoyed it and would love a season 3.

10. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma llya - Better than fate/Stay in the kitchen.

Movies/OVA

1. Wolf Children - If you loved Hosoda's other films, you are sure to love this one as it is one of his best.

2. Death Billiards
- I want more

3. Pokemon: The Origin - I never thought it would happen, but it did and it was glorious.

Worst of the year

Beyond the Boundary (Kyoukai no Kanata) - One of KyoAni's worst anime

Attack on Titan (Shingeky no Kyojin) - Overhyped dreck

Tamako Market - Boring

1) Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Honestly I could go on about how much I enjoyed this show but I'll just say it has some really amazing visuals in terms of its backgrounds and screen displays and I personally quite like the character designs. I like how it has a balance of paying tribute to the earlier work while at the same time doing something new and different. It may have a few missteps that one can point out but it's so well made on the whole and with such genuine earnest that I couldn't help but quickly love the show not only as my favorite for the entire year but one of my favorite shows ever.

2) Gundam Build Fighters

When I first saw that the premise for this show was more directed towards children and focusing on the Gundam models, I felt it wasn't a show for me and planned to basically just ignore it. When the show began to air however, I saw that the model Gundams would still be shown as the usual full size during battle and that they are amazingly hand drawn and animated. The characters and their interactions turned out to be pretty entertaining and the battles are fun, that this turned out to be one of my top favorite shows of the year and quite possibly one of my favorite Gundam shows ever.

3) Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~

Another very nice surprise of the year. I like the character designs and while the general setup might not be the most original anymore it's still interesting enough. There's a large cast of characters which have a nice variety in terms of their looks, powers and personalities. I pretty much liked every one of them and while I would have liked some more background on more of them, the show does a pretty good job at the same time to balance its large cast. All this combined with some amazing animations made for a really entertaining show.

4) Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen

While the first series focused more on the dolls and their fight known as the "Alice Game", this series has more of a focus on the character Jun. I liked its more somber and mature look at the character and his having to deal with and ultimately break out of his isolation. It's a nice coming of age or finding ones place in the world type story told in a bit different way then the usual. The dolls instead add as an aid to this and seeing some parallels between the partners Suigintou and Megu, as well as even Kirakishou and her place similar to that of Jun was nice. The story and visuals get a little rough in some of the last couple episodes but overall I was pleased with the outcome as not only did more Rozen Maiden get made but it turned out to be made pretty well.

5) Kyousogiga TV

It's interesting to see how this started out and how ultimately this television version more fully fleshes out and explains the story and its characters. I just really liked the colourful visuals and the really energetic characters, especially the lead girl Koto. There are some really nicely done visuals and angels used in conjunctions with some beautiful music to make some pretty emotional and memorable scenes throughout. Ultimately it's about a struggle between family members and how they fit into the world. Things maybe aren't as well done in some of the latter episodes and some might dislike the re-use of so much of the OVA material but it ultimately comes together into a nice package.

6) The Eccentric Family (Uchoten Kazoku)

There is some really nice art and backgrounds on display in this show that I think are some of the best in regards to a majority of anime and not just from this year alone. The show is certainly quite aptly named as it ultimately revolves around the dealings of a family and how they deal both with loss and each other. The added element of Tanuki's and Tengu's and such isn't really needed in some cases but it's certainly no detriment and adds a fun extra element to the story. Most of the characters I thought were interesting in their own way but personally I would have liked to have seen more of Benten's past.

7) Love Lab

Another surprise show. It was entertaining how it was aware of certain tropes and cliché that are present in the genre and how it pokes fun at them. An entertaining cast with all kinds of reactions to different situations and the "sakuga",or higher quality animation, in some scenes or episodes was definitely a nice plus.

8) The Flowers of Evil (Aku no Hana)

The initial backlash against the show and its rotoscoping definitely makes sense as even after watching the show in its entirety there are still enough off looking moments. The background work done by Studio Pablo however is great and the music and sound effects really do a great job at adding to the atmosphere. Not only the atmosphere but the show does a good job in more showing rather then telling through its visual and audio elements. Through its direction and writing it does a good job in showing how unbalanced and pretentious at least two of the main cast are. While I can't relate to the characters and didn't find it maybe as uncomfortable as many others, I honestly don't think it's a show I'd really rush out to watch again despite how well it accomplishes what it seems to want to portray.

9) Chihayafuru 2

I voted for the first part last year and this second part is more or less more of the same show. It does run into some similar problems as the first part such as pacing and repetitiveness, as well as maybe faltering a bit perhaps due to those around the mid to latter point. Overall though I still enjoyed this show.

10) Valvrave the Liberator

This is not a show you really take that seriously due to some of its nonsensical plot points or character actions. The first episode seemed routine enough up until the very last moments. It got kind of wacky and fun but I still think the ending to episode 10 was unnecessary personally. The second half still had some crazy moments but not as many as the first and seemed to slip back into almost more normal mecha type conventions. The conclusion was also somewhat surprisingly predictable and low key. It has it's moments of cool and fun that it was entertaining to watch but some of the problems mentioned cause it to slip a bit. It has a large cast that enough of them are interesting in their own way such as the man himself Eru-Erufu.

Television Honorable Mentions

From the New World (Shin Sekai Yori)
I voted for this last year and I was glad to see it ultimately place within the top 10. I still enjoyed the remainder of the show that aired this year and while I'll be giving the nod as far as points go to other shows, I'd still like to acknowledge it and recommend people watch it if they still haven't.

Girls und Panzer
Another show I really enjoyed and voted for last year. Ultimately only a couple episodes aired this year and I believe it was more due to some production or scheduling issues, so ultimately, again, I'll be giving my nod this year to other shows. These last couple episodes alone were so entertaining that I seriously did consider voting for the show but ultimately I'll just recommend people watch it if they still haven't.

Otona Joshi no Anime Time
Honestly even mentioning these shorts feels like whispering amongst a hurricane in trying to get people's attention to watch them but maybe a miracle will happen and the combined voice of the few of us that acknowledged it will reach someone.

I'd also like to highlight the company Kyoto Animation, or KyoAni's, three works of the year Tamako Market, Free! and Beyond the Boundary(Kyoukai no Kanatat).
As far as the narratives some might find the first boring and the others too "pandering" to certain audiences as well as having shallow characterization. As for the visuals though I think KyoAni still has some of the best art and animation in their shows. I also personally like their designs. I still found they had entertaining moments and some nice directorial work despite some of their written flaws and appreciate the work that went into the art and animation. Some then might still want to at least give them a look.

Films

1) The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki
Probably my favorite of Mamoru Hosoda's films. It might be a bit of an idealized take on a single mothers life in some ways but I couldn't help but root for Hana and the family. Just the way it comes together with all it's elements such as the visuals and direction, it's so well done that it's just a favorite movie in general.

2) The Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa)
One of my favorite, if not my favorite, of Makoto Shinkai's films. The visuals as usual are just beautiful. It's a nice love story and I liked seeing the little details such as the two characters slowly getting closer to one another. Things might get a bit melodramatic in a scene near the end but despite that I still thought it was really well done on all fronts.

3) Little Witch Academia
I think more people need to be aware of the shorts coming out of The Young Animator Training Project and what better place to start then with Little Witch Academia. It maybe doesn't have the most original concept but it's executed well with have nice visuals and amazing animation all throughout.

Film Honorable Mentions

Honestly I found this category to be a bit tough as there's actually quite a few movies I enjoyed and think people should take a look at. Mostly concerning movies of franchises or already aired shows.

Blue Exorcist The Movie
This movie has some of the most amazing backgrounds and visuals in any animated work I've ever seen. Honestly I threw around the idea for quite a while to include it in my top 3 list. It does well as a stand alone piece and I really recommend people watch it.

One Piece Film Z
I don't really know anything about the series nor do I follow it but I decided to watch this film based on recommendations. It's actually stands up well on its own with its story and characters and has pretty nice visuals and pacing throughout, along with some really nicely animated fight scenes throughout as well.

Steins;Gate: Fuka Ryoiki no Déjà vu
More directed towards fans of the series and the character Makise Kurisu. With that it might not be for everyone but I personally really enjoyed it.

Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home
Basically it's like an extra extended episode from the TV show but if you're a fan of the show like I am then you'll probably like it. It was nice to visit with the characters of the show one more time after a couple of years.

Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya
Fans of the Gintama series will most likely enjoy this but even if you aren't familiar with the franchise it's still entertaining on its own and could lead you into watching the show which I myself have started.

-Thanks very much to anyone who takes the time to actually read through this. ;)

Didn't get to finish off as many shows as I would have liked, but of the shows I saw some of, I can at least make a decent list.

1. From the New World: This was simply one of the best anime of recent years. It's rare to get such a thought provoking sci-fi title in any medium, and it was a real treat to see an anime this compelling. The character development was great, but more than that the series really captured me with its world building and political commentary, not to mention the ways they built the societies of the world. Few works of fiction can ever really achieve the level From the New World did, and the ending to the series will remain with me forever.
2. Chihayafuru 2: The second season of one of my favorite shows from recent years lived up to everything I could have hoped for. The karuta matches were just as compelling as before, and there was a lot more to enjoy with pretty much all the characters. All I can think about now is how I really hope we get a third season, because I'm eager to see what happens next with all of the characters.
3. Flowers of Evil
4. Space Brothers
5. The Eccentric Family
6. Space Battleship Yamato 2199
7. Hajime no Ippo Rising
8. Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

TV:

1. Shinsekai Yori.
One of the most original and amazing anime in recent years. SSY is not only one a trully great scifi anime, is a trully great anime.

2. Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

3. Attack on Titan.

4. Chihayafuru 2.

5. Gargantia.

Super quick because I've got no time:
1. Eccentric Family: The most solid show this year for me. Created a place I wanted to revisit.
2. Space Battleship Yamato: The beginning and ending had weaknesses, but that middle stretch was pure goodness.
3. Hunter x Hunter: Not as good as the source material, but still pretty damn good. A shonen fighting adaptation done right.
4. Aku no Hana: I didn't totally love it, but I did appreciate how entirely different it was than anything else out there this year.
5. From the New World

1. Aku no Hana

Really great representation of how emotional restlessness combined with a lack of perspective can cause one's life to spiral out of control. Awkward teenagers and the crazy things they do are often the subject of comedy, but Aku no Hana treats the events as the basis of a dead serious psychological drama where we are meant to empathize with them. Uncomfortable to watch, but well directed.

2. Shinsekai Yori

I am only half way through the series, but I love richly developed sci-fi worlds based on the compounding consequences of moral philosophies with cool cosmologies. And yeah, that's this show. The production is a little rough during some episodes and events seem oddly paced at times, but Shinsekai Yori ticks all the right boxes for me.

3. Watamote

In a way, Aku no Hana and Watamote are two sides of the same coin. This is the side where we laugh at being an awkward teenager. After a little introspection, Tomoko suddenly realizes she has no friends or social skills and embarks on a quest to change her image. What follows is, as you would expect, a series of hilariously embarrassing failures. It's uncomfortable, but good humor. It might normally be a problem for a show to focus on just one character, but Tomoko's serious lack of social skills combined with her delusional positive outlook makes for a fun series of creative falters.

4. Gin no Saji

An uplifting, well-animated comedy about the value of unpredictable life experiences. As an academic student out of place in an agricultural school full of farmers, it was fun to watch Hachiken adapt and benefit from a type of life he never expected to have.

5. Love Lab

You know the drill. Take a gaggle of high school girls based on comedic archetypes, throw them in the same club, and hilarity ensues as they learn the true meaning of friendship and stuff. By some miracle of directing prowess, Oota Masahiko brings his magic to yet another series I thought I would hate but somehow ended up really enjoying.

6. Haganai NEXT
7. Non Non Biyori
8. Minami-ke Tadaimi
9. Kill la Kill
10. Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatteiru

1. Space Battleship Yamato 2199:

Two years ago, I completed the Legend of Galactic Heroes, convinced that no other anime could possibly let me experience a work as grand. While LoGH still remains my favorite space opera anime of all time, Yamato 2199 gave it a run for its money, earning a spot on my favorites.

2. Shin Sekai Yori
3. Zetsuen no Tempest
4. Girls und Panzer
5. Hataraku Maou-sama
6. Log Horizon
7. Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova
8. Psycho-Pass
9. Uchouten Kazoku
10. Shingeki no Kyojin

Aaah I'm late, I'll just quickly write something so that I can partecipate this time.

TV SHOWS

1. Log Horizon - Yeah, no expectations for this one. A MMORPG anime in a post-SAO world? That's going to suck, obviously. Man, was I wrong. When a fantasy show about an MMO is more focused on politics, world building and a big cast of likable characters and it manages to be way more entertaining than the fights you know you have a winner on your hands. They even talk about stuff like cooldowns and day&night cycles! This show is way smarter than it looks, and I can't wait to see where it all goes. Also the OP is awfully amazing (or amazingly awful?) and the author is a great guy that obviously knows his stuff, so I wish him all the success he can get.

2. Servant x Service - A slice of life about adult work life. You don't see this stuff often, and that's why I loved it. With likable characters, some good humor and no unecessary drama, it's a complete shame that this isn't more popular. It's the kind of show that deserves a second season probably more than most of the other stuff on my list, and I hate that I'll never get it.

3. Kill la Kill - This is FUN. That's it. Okay, I'll write more: it could've been better. The comparison to Gurren Lagann doesn't do this show any favor, and I think it suffers for it. But when it's good, it's very good. Top 3 material, I'd say. I just wish the plot moved faster...or at least I would've liked more stuff like episode 4.

4. Samurai Flamenco - This show is a tranwreck. Except the train manages to safely land on the bridge below the tracks. Then the bridge collapses, and the train somehow grows wings and just flies away, because why the fuck not. I don't know where it's going, and I don't know if IT knows where it's going. But who cares. It's a beautiful lie.

5. Love Lab - If I hadn't read positive comments about this I NEVER would've even touched it. But I'm glad I did. Incredibly well animated, with a great cast of fun characters and a surprising lack of fan service, this is the kind of school "slice of life" anime that I want to see more of.

6. Watamote - This is the kind of adaptation that I expected to fail. Miserably. Instead everything about it worked perfectly, from the acting to the added scenes that are greatly integrated into the main "story".

7. Shirokuma Cafe - I haven't watched all of it and I believe that, if I did, this would've been top 3 material for sure. Relaxing, charming and sometimes even funny in the worst/best way possible (I hope you love puns). Everyone should give this show a try.

8. Psycho-Pass - Oh Psycho-Pass, so enjoyable and yet so disappointing. I'm glad that there's a new cyberpunk anime out there, with (at times) some decent animation and art as well, but I could've done without the pacing problems and silly story elements near the end. It's no Ghost in The Shell, for sure, but I'm still excited for Season 2.

9. JoJo's Bizzarre Adventure - It's the kind of fun anime that I kind of miss these days. It's low on this list because I don't undestand if the problems I have with it are there on purpose and it confuses me. Ironically or not, I couldn't help but enjoy every minute of it anyway.

Last minute, no effort:

Updated.

1. Kiniro Mosaic ; The ultimate healing anime for me last year. Very heartwarming first episode. Excellent soundtrack.
2. Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova ; Almost passed since it was all 3D, but since there was a collaboration event on KanColle, my interest was slightly piqued. So I watched the first ep on a whim and was immediately hooked. Great battles and charming characters.
3. Non Non Biyori ; Second ultimate healing anime of last year. Very cute and relaxing.
4. Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san ; Crazy mermaid with an amusing accent and a ton of jokes. Made me a fan of Yukarin.
5. Gundam Build Fighters ; Pure undiluted gundamservice. I love it.
6. Hataraku Maou Sama ; Has its funny moments. #TeamChiho is the only way.
7. Majestic Prince ; 3D mecha done right. The battles are excellent.
8. Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo? ; KuroUsagi.
9. Suisei no Gargantia ; Very interesting premise, enjoyable overall.
10. Tamako Market ; Very laid-back atmosphere. Community feels like something I'd like to be part of.

Honorable Mentions:
Log Horizon ; MMO anime done right
Gingitsune ; Charming show.
KLK ; Victim of hype. Mako > Nui > Satsuki > * > muh reveng- whatamifightingfooooorko
Jojo ; already voted for last year
GuP ; " "

I got that last minute edit in. Finally fully done with it, I wish I added more thoughts but I think it's a solid list for me. List is here.

Last minute, no effort, from top to bottom I guess:

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san
Gundam Build Fighters
Hataraku Maou Sama
Majestic Prince
Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?

You should probably add a quick reason why you picked it for at least one of them.
