Aye, budget was less than $500K and they made profit in a week. http://www.gamefront.com/rise-of-the-triad-has-officially-turned-a-profit/

Thanks for the link! It even confirmed my thoughts:

“Interceptor set out to create a specific game for a specific audience on day one,” said Dave Oshry. “We knew that if we kept costs down and delivered what we promised through the right distribution channels for that audience, we’d be successful. Steam, GOG and Green Man Gaming have been amazing partners for Interceptor and Apogee, and we can’t thank them enough for helping us to get ROTT out there so much so that we turned a profit in week one.”

I hate to brag, but I'm pretty good at that. ;p

EDIT: Moral of the story, as much as we hate on publishers for making a game appeal to everyone, gamers should recognize when the opposite is achieved.

"Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction" for PC & Playstation. Top down action RPG. Unreal Engine.

Welp!

Kind of bummed out that the "irreverent action movie reference spewing man child" is the thing that everyone remembers about Duke Nukem.

DN3D was actually a super fun shooter with really creative level design that was an excellent evolution of the Doom formula.

I have no problem with them doing an action RPG if that's true. Duke's had various styles of gameplay over the years so it's not like you can say it's 'betraying' anything.

If that's the case it makes me wonder what the hell happened to Reloaded, I really want to see more of that.

I would love to see a Duke Nukem game, taken in a completely new direction. A way more serious and "Badass" Duke, with an epic plot. Something that really brings back Duke as an Action Hero.

That reminds me of how tired I am of strippers, babes etc. in Duke Nukem games, which only degrades Duke's intelligence even more (there is nothing wrong with Duke Liking strippers and babes, but it shouldn't be the main plot of a game). Give us a Duke game without strippers, a great sinister villain than can break Duke (Think Bane from DK:Rising), a slightly older, and way more badass/gritty Duke, and a galactic plotline that can be taken seriously, and I'm Sold!

So a game that's not Duke Nukem?

Go make a new IP.

The stuff about a "serious" Duke game seems odd (assuming that's still the direction they want to take it), but I guess it could work if they do it Blood Dragon style and go all-out on an absurd action movie premise.

Not that a new Duke can't channel the original side-scrollers, but a rather dissimilar stat-heavy action game using the franchise as a sales crutch, and with some abominable grit-ification? Nope. Make a new IP or do a Duke 3D remake to pay for your new game!

I mean, Interceptor tried to remake Duke 3D before Gearbox shut them down, so they should follow through and then branch out. This comes across as mediocre fan-fiction, which is nice as an exercise but not as a game I'll play for months to come.

The modern and exaggerated gameplay and the sense of humour of Blood Dragon is what DNF missed for me.

I don't think the gameplay of Blood Dragon is very reminiscent of Duke 3D. They're both FPS games with comic elements but that's where the similarities end.

They did the ROTT reboot, right? If there's anyone I'd trust to take Duke back to his 3D awesomenessess, it's them. As long as it has a solid single player campaign.

Let's hope this game is good, and that it shows Duke is still the king.

I remember following the Duke3D remake pretty closely back when it was first announced, and posting in their forums. I'd love to see them finally releasing a new Duke game, even if it's not the one they originally intended to make.

In a top-down action RPG?

Top-down ARPG? For real? Well, that's certainly something different.

How sure are we about the "translation"? The writing's pretty goofy - mentioning "Playstation" without specifying a platform? Referring to "an unreal engine"? Seems a little weird. Fishy, even.

So a game that's not Duke Nukem?

Go make a new IP.

So make a Duke Nukem game that's not Duke Nukem? Okay...

Hooray, more people who think Duke Nukem begins and ends with the dumbest excesses of Duke Nukem 3D.

I just beat Duke Nukem 3D this year, the level design is some of the best I've ever seen, the game stands the test of time and I consider it amongst the best FPS games ever. Still, a huge element of the game's appeal is his character which I didn't find creepy or outdated in D3D. I would hate to see it changed dramatically and it would cause me to lose some interest.

I could see it being something like Lara Croft and the guardian of light with RPG elements. I could also see it being pretty cool, cautiously optimistic.

I'm so confused. It doesn't seem like the CEO is a Duke Nukem fan. So why is he making a pretense of being a Duke Nukem fan?

Maybe what he likes about Duke is different to what you like about Duke. Could that be a possibility?

That's the thing though, you don't need to change Duke much. Ever since 3D, Duke's been primarily a reactionary character, so all you need to do is change the stimulus.

To clarify, I'm saying you can keep the character from 3D broadly the same even when removing some of the sleazier stuff. If Duke never even encounters a stripper, we don't need to hear him saying some dumb line that makes him sound gross and stupid.

As a big fan of DN, I don't know what to feel about this being a top-down action rpg. I'm really glad there's another title but a bit down that this won't be a new game in the vein of DN3D (which DNF wasn't).

Anyway, maybe this will turn out to be great and I will look back at this post as just me being presumptuous, I dunno.

It's what popularized Duke, and it's what Duke is now, like it or not.

The group that even remembers the older 2D sidescroller that was Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II grows ever smaller.

What "Duke is now" is a joke, and not a funny one. 3DRealms already tried making a new Duke game that gave far too much reverence to the tropes 3D established, and it was called Duke Nukem Forever. It released, and people hated it. The "babes" showed us Duke was a sexist asshole while the pigcops showed us that the developers had no imagination left. It failed in every conceivable way.

The good news is that you don't need those things to make a good Duke game. Duke can still be Duke without strippers and pigcops. I daresay he can be a better Duke without them.
