Update: ’90s Arcade Racer and Wii U

Can't wait! With Mario Kart in May and Project CARS in October (?), hopefully this and Fast Racing NEO fall right in the middle.

Good... good.

Depending on how this turns out I might get it on Wii U over PC, because I like arcade racers on console. Depends on how different the versions are.

What I love about this lineup is it covers all the major types of racing games without any overlap -- you have your futuristic racer, arcade racer, kart racer, and racing sim. Hopefully they're all as good as I expect them to be.

Wow this looks pretty good. Is this a retail title or eShop only? This and Project Cars, if it makes it out this year, I hope will make for some fun racing titles to play on Wii U this year.

I guess advertising works! :)

We're planning on it, but each platform is different as far as what it can do. At least 2P local on Wii U is ideal given that one player can use the pad and another can use the tv.

Day one!

We don't know yet. I'd rather release an amazing local multiplayer experience THEN follow it up post-release with a free update.

I know it's not ideal to players, but, to me, I'd rather have more people playing first then doing it then having everyone wait for an online component.

No complaints here. Hope that the development works smoothly for you guys!

Yeah! I was sort of thinking that when I typed it, that even if a couple of these games come out simultaneously, they're different enough to want all of them. And as one of the few that own Need for Speed on Wii U, I have to say that racing games can look damn good on U!

Game has kind of a simplistic look to it, but at the same time colorful and super clean.

If there was an HD Dreamcast, I think this is what it'd look like.

Probably at least as an options. I'm all about giving game options when possible. The gamepad is the right size to feel like a steering wheel, but we haven't tested how well it works as one.

Tyrone, one more question. Is it going to support gyroscope steering with the Gamepad?

Steam/eShop/PSN--wherever we can get it. Even mobile, but, again, waaaaay in the future after we finish all the important versions.

That's a pretty nice selection of racers on Wii U this year. I would take any of them over the usual sim franchises (dunno about Fast actually, not seen enough of it).

I have no idea Unity's current state on XO. Given that it may not be available for months or even into 2015, we have no intention of holding it for a simultaneous release. However, that doesn't mean we won't try to get it on other platforms after we release the PC and Wii U versions.
Will there be a bundle price for multiple platforms? I don't mind paying extra if that means I get to have multiple platforms to play it on.

Thank you for the answer. It is the right size for a steering wheel, it misses the fixed mounting point, but I found it to be very fun to use in NFSMWU once you get used to it, so I hope it will be an option in the end.

(Reminder: I'm Tyrone Rodriguez, from Nicalis and one of the developers on this game)

The Wii U is actually perfectly capable of doing 1080p, but we wanted to give that up so we can add more visual effects and polish. With AA, running at 720p/60fps the visual fidelity is negligible given that we can add more effects.

This is basically the same reasoning as Shin'en when they made Nano Assault.

And what do you mean "one of"... i thought there was only one guy working on this game? lol

MadOdorMachine

No additional functions
Definitely will support through Steam.

We'll balance each platform to work properly, there's unfortunately no other way around it. I say unfortunately because it's more work for us but worth it :)

It may support controllers for phones/mobile devices, but we're very FAR off from getting to that point. Order of importance is PC/Wii U/Other consoles/mobile.

Can't give you too much info on the handling other than we're trying to make it very accessible, but not stupidly easy. We want it to feel like a (good) modern day arcade game.

Thanks for responding. It may be a bit premature, but I hope the game is successful and we can see a sequel or additional cars & tracks thru DLC later down the line. It's a shame this genre has lost popularity, but I'm glad you guys are stepping up and filling the gap.

I don't think Sony/Nintendo/Steam would do anything like that anytime soon.

More than one person. The original creator/kickstarter-er is Antonis/Pelikan13 we (Nicalis, Inc.) are working with him to handle development, production, coding etc.

Huh, that "Warp Zone" place isn't far from me, I've been meaning to go. Props to them for helping the game be made, I suppose.

Maybe I don't belong at GAF as I think this is generally acceptable. :p

I can see 60 FPS vs. 30, no question, but 720 vs. 1080 is much less noticeable to me.

But i wasn't judging, just observing. It's just literally the same explanation as Shin'en gave. I have no issues with that.

It'd be after an NA release. We'd like to support Europe and I don't like leaving EU players behind. NOE in particular doesn't make the process easy or seamless and because of that the priority level on EU releases is much lower than NA or even JP. I'm not the only Nintendo-supporting developer who feels this way, either.

What is the hindering problem with NOE's process compared with NOA/NCL?

I wonder that as well. If someone asked me which Nintendo region has been killing it with quick releases lately, I would say Europe. Plus I might be totally wrong here, but I thought I saw this game in an eShop reel on a Euro Direct.

Shibata needs to act on this one because it's streets ahead of other eShop titles, I'm sure it'll sell well in Europe.

I don't suppose there's any chance this might have a touch screen based track editor for the WiiU version?

..as I doubt well get one in Mario Kart :(

I know, I wasn't making commentary on what you said, just adding on with my own opinion. You were as good a jumping off point as any.

Usually Renegade Kid calls out the ratings process as the stumbling block with PEGI and USK (and the AUS board whose name I don't know) requiring $$$ and lots of bureaucratic nonsense like forms and gameplay videos. NoE being the weak link in this case is news to me. Get Timmmmah on the line!

Do you happen to know why cave story 3d isnt in the eshop, but the old version is ?

I want to give Nicalis my money, but i want the superior version

Thx for your information, Tyrone

Is there any plan to release in Japan eshop?

I hope NCL realizes the effort of your team and bring this to Japan

We'd like all our games to come out everywhere, including Japan/Asia.

Currently figuring out our options for Japan, which would include everything we're doing for 3DS, Wii U and PSN.

Can't wait for this game. The art style is so dead-on...well, 90's arcade racer! Very impressive stuff, considering that similar games were made by large Sega teams back in the day.

I hope this comes out on XBLA. The game drought over there is getting seriously bad.

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
I'm super pissed the game won't come day and date on EU as well, especially for game with so litte text needing to be translated.
Fuck that noise :(

Game looks great, I've been jonesing for something like this, shame about the late EU release for Wii U.
I would actually like to know details about why it's hard to get it aproves here if it's possible.

Ugh...just realised this probably won't get released in Australia since it costs more money than it's worth to release smaller indie games here.

Any hope of being able to throw my money at you guys down here in Australia Tyrone?

Tyrone, please release a demo of the game! It's a great way to build hype and let people know that you have a quality product worthy of their $$$.

Not worried at all. It's not our only platform.

Nice. How worried are you guys about Wii U sales numbers?

We'll see. I do want players in EU/NZ/AU to play our games, the ratings issues are less of a stopping block for me than inconsistent policies through distributors.

I don't really believe in demos, the cost money to make and take us away from finishing the real game. Just have to be patient, you'll like the finished product, I think

I hope it will have a more proper title, just being called "90s Arcade Racer" sounds bland to me for some reason. Needs a catchy name.

I've grown pretty fond of the name. Hope it stays. And man, I wish we Europeans don't have to wait too long for the game :/ (fucking rating systems and whatnot...)

Three questions for Tyrone:

1) Why do you put the answers BEFORE the questions? It makes your posts confusing to read.

2) About handling. We know how the three original cars will handle, according to the KS description:

"There are three different car classes, Supercar, Stock and Formula. The first two will have a drifting handling model but different dynamics and the Formula car will be about high grip line racing."

But how will these handle?

3) Your inspirations so far seem to include Virtua Racing, Indy 500, Daytona USA 1, Daytona USA 2, SCUD Race and Ferrari F355 Challenge. If you managed to get something from Sega Rally *cough*GAME OVER YEAAAAAH*cough* I think the game would include all the 90's Sega arcade racer in some way.
