It Wasn't Actually That Bad- Games You Will Always Defend

In this thread, we discuss games that we love that we feel get a lot of unfair criticism or that seem to receive a lot of hate. This is a thread meant to shine a more positive light on those underappreciated classics. The first such game I'd like to talk about is Donkey Kong 64.

DonkeyKong64CoverArt.jpg

This is a game that was actually beloved by fans and critically acclaimed in its time, but has garnered more negative reaction over the years. The main criticism seems to be that it goes overboard with the collecting. Now, that is a legitimate criticism, but I love collectathon platformers, so I actually enjoyed collecting all the shit in this game. And the gameplay is classic Rare 3D platforming, so no complaint there. In my eyes, this is one of the best looking 5th generation games.

Then there's the near six hour soundtrack by Grant Kirkhope, which is one of his best works.

But what I really want to talk about is how damn ambitious this game was. The scope is simply staggering, especially for an N64 game from 1999. The levels are massive, to the point that they actually have warp pads that teleport you to various points in a level.

And one has to mention the sheer gameplay variety. Now, the Kongs do share some moves, like the gun mechanics, music based special attacks, throwing explosives, and even photography. Oh yeah, and the game includes FIVE playable characters, each with their own unique movesets.

There's also a lot of content on this cartridge, making the Expansion Pak justifiable. For example, I like how you can rewatch all the cutscenes from the main menu. There are also plenty of minigames to play, like the minecart game, and it even includes the original Donkey Kong and Jetpac in their entirety (which are actually required to beat the game).

Oh, and let's not forget about the other modes in this game, including the boss arena that lets you replay boss battles. It even includes a shooter deathmatch multiplayer mode, even if it is a little limited. How awesome is that?

So yes, I love Donkey Kong 64, despite the criticism it receives nowadays. It's one of my favorite N64 games, as well as one of my favorite 3D platformers period.

Well GAF, what are some of your favorite underappreciated classics?

The Legend of Heroes games on the PSP from Bandai

They were simple, charming, and the translation was probably on par with most PS2 era localizations. Yeah, it wasn't perfect, but it was better than PS1/SNES era. And most importantly, you could actually finish them, unlike the modern Legend of Heroes/Trails game, which becomes a 50 hour slog with too much added complexity.

A Tear in Vermilion in particular is really excellent.

Also they were well done technically, no loading times running from the UMD (US versions anyway)

Duke Nukem Forever.
It was klunky, janky and just very aged. But I loved it.
It WAS the good old duke nukem of old, with all its late 90s klunkyness, but with modern graphics.

Best remake/reboot/sequel ever. Everyone that hated it, and there were lots, hated it because it WAS duke nukem
and they wanted something else.

Kamina

Golden Boy
Matroid Other M
Yes the gameplay was sometimes somewhat clunky. But the story was only hated on because fans were disappointed that their heroine was turned into a woman with emotions. And while i agree that it was sometimes silly, overall i had a good time.

Drakengard 3. I know the game absolute horrible performance but god damn I love story and the characters. With that being said, I do wish we would get some kind of remaster on PS4 so I can finally enjoy the gameplay section as well.

Can't say there are "bad" games I would get defensive about, but I did like Donkey Kong 64 too, and "bad" games like the 2 PS2 Castlevania's and Castlevania Lords of Shadow series, Tenchu series (well I guess first 3 don't count), Metroid Other M, Duke Nukem Forever, Devil's Third, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and Bullet Witch (wouldn't even try to defend this game in the slightest though). I do have a weird thing for bad action games, don't know why.

I've wanted to play that but seeing the performance totally killed it. I figured Square might do something to cash in on Nier Automata with his previous games, but not yet.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.

Yes: Camera was HORRIBLE (at times).

BUT THIS WAS THE BEST ADVENTURE/PLATFORM GAME I PLAYED SINCE N64/PS1 ERA.

Second other M
Baby baby ooo aside the game was fun to play. Not the second coming of Christ.

Kane and Lynch 2 was ok to play too wasn’t the best ever but I didn’t hate it.

Got it really cheap second hand too sold it after ?

I'll defend ME Andromeda for the multi player alone. The movement and the gun play is lots of fun. I wont/cant defend the single player aspects. I never got through it.
I'll also defend DoAX2. It was deeply flawed, but still looked nice and the volleyball was enjoyable.

Yea, I actually liked Other M. It played like Metroid that's for sure. Never understood the complaints about Samus' characterization. Hell, it made me want another third-person Metroid game instead of another Prime game ... mostly because ... SCANNING SUCKS BALLS

Ryse, those who say it's a quicktime event tech demo either never played it or are on the agenda bandwagon.

Beyond the Beyond on PS1 was my first JRPG as I kind of avoided them before, they just didn't seem like my cup of tea. I absolutely loved it at the time. I saw later that it was considered pretty crap tier compared to most but it will always have a place in my gaming heart, lol! I guess it doesn't get a lot of hate, most here will not even remember it.

Planescape: Torment is always praised for its quests and story, but loathed for its "terrible" combat system.

Well, I don't think the combat system was THAT bad at all.
It had its downsides for sure and it was a worse version of the Baldur's Gate one that was used as a foundation, true, but still it offered a decent challenge and it scaled well enough, to the point I actually enjoy(ed) playing it far more than a lot of other games that somehow don't get a similar criticism.

Assassin's Creed 3. People LOVE to tear that one to shreds, but I genuinely enjoyed the setting, story and gameplay.

Agreed. Didn't have a problem with the main character either, I liked the change of pace. The only bad parts were tail-missions and the frontier was a bit empty.

Alpha Protocol got a hard time but I think it's great. Sure there's a few things could have been done better but the story, characters and gameplay make it one of my favourite games

MGSV. Both gameplay and story were great. Story was in a different format, but it was still fantastic.

Yeah, I think he was a good protagonist, but most people were still in love with Ezio and expected an exact clone. The tailing missions were quite irritating for AC3, and the series in general, but for the frontier I genuinely enjoyed it. It felt empty but was fun to just walk around in anyway.

Two Worlds 2. I put a hell of a lot of time into that game, after picking it up cheap on a whim. Really enjoyed it, barring the final boss, which made me rage quit. Eff that asswipe. Anyway, I don't think it reviewed particularly well and received a lot of criticism for the jank (which is fair).

I'll always defend No Man's Sky because everyone else are in the hivemind that bought into the lies of a few reddit individuals.

It's a great game from its launch.

The order 1886. Not perfect, but amazing visuals, setting, characters and especially voice actors. Needs a second chance.
Knack. Also not perfect, but nothing really stood out as bad. Just a fun, simple action-platformer.
I also echo the ryse and other m opinions.

Lately, Dynasty Warriors 9. It seems like most of the fanbase are freaking out because they had the audacity to finally make something different, but different doesn't automatically mean its bad. If given a chance, its actually a very involved and interesting entry for the series, with a lot to offer. For me, its ok to like both the old games and new style gameplay. They could have made the same game again, but with a few more characters/weapons, I'm glad they finally changed up the formula.

Mad Max is a well executed, great game. It combines the best of GTA and Arkham combat all in a Mad Max environment.

Devil May Cry 2. Not as good as 1, 3, or 4 for a lot of reasons but it does have some good points and is overall still a decent game. Despite what the Internet would have you believe.

The music is excellent.
Devil Trigger had customisable abilities which allowed different approaches to fights.
Desperation Devil Trigger is awesome and should have been used in more games.
Dante's stoic personality was interesting and made you wonder what caused him to act like this instead of his usual hyperactive self.
Lucia was a great character who should have been in more games.
Bolverk was a cool boss who had previously fought Sparda (this is something that could be expanded upon in future installments).

People are hating on DK64? It's whole genre is collect-a-thon!

In a similar vein I've heard criticism that other platformers like Banjo Kazooie had controls that didn't stand up to time, it's probably because I grew up on it but I can't disagree more, BK is still a very fun, extremely charming game.

Bionic Commando 2009 is a very fun, enjoyable game. Yes, there are issues with the design, but once you accept the limitations, the swinging mechanics and combat are very fun.

I can back that sentiment. It has some bad design flaws but it would be considered a pretty good ps2 game had it released then. I enjoyed my run through it and it makes me sad the series died.

SSX 2012. Yeah, it never was as good as Tricky or 3 and the death pits were infuriating, but it had more character and adrenaline than the original or On Tour. I really loved this game, it's a shame the series is dead. Still waiting for the indie scene to clone this series.

People say that Spec Ops: The Line have bad gameplay, but I disagree. This game is perfect in every way (except the multiplayer).

Shadow of mordor series.

Those games are fucking fun. I don’t care what anyone else says. The ability to build your own narrative in those games is beyond fun. That and I just found out that I put in over 1000 plus hours into the new that just came out last year. Fun fucking game.

Final Fantasy XIII. The game is incredibly maligned, perhaps justifiably so at times, but there's something about it I can't help but like. The production values are superb (UI, character design, etc), solid soundtrack, good battle system. The linearity of the first 10 chapters is a bitter pill to swallow, but I feel that the game recovers well.

For me, XV was a far bigger disappointment.

GTA IV. It was an amazing game released 10 years ago. It had some flaws, but it made huge improvements to the series. It remained in the XBL top list until GTA V came out. It sold well. The reviews were great. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I find it laughable when someone says it was bad.

Bioshock Infinite

Yeah it's 'original vision' wasn't particularly intact, but what a ride. What a world. Gunplay and vigor variety were lots of fun and the story was one of the better written ones out there, though I understand how people expected more on that front

Gears Of War Judgement and Halo 5 are both great games. Halo 5 in particular is everything I've ever wanted in a Halo game, bring on 6!!!
Judgement was a cool 'side project' and I'd welcome another, some of the multiplayer game modes are so much fun and I still play them now and again even to this day.
It's no Gears 4 though, I still play that EVERY single day.

Ditto. I came to this thread to defend this game. Combat in this game surpassed anything in previous metroid games. It was lengthy but doesn’t have the bloated, confusing backtracking other Metroid games also tend to have. Graphics were good and the boss fights were amazing. Story was dumb but that was it. This and and Super Metroid were the only Metroids I 100%ed.

No Man's Sky:

At launch it was at least original, beautiful and intriguing. Following the many free updates it's quite something. Ramping off alien mountains in the Roamer is just plain fun.

Metroid: Other M

Try to ignore the story, and see it as another approach to translating Metroid to 3D. I far prefer it, mechanically, to the Prime games. It's fast and fluid, like I feel Metroid should be.

No exaggeration: I'd play an Other M sequel before I'd play Prime 4.
