Killzone & Resistance franchises. Dead or dormant?

Reading the 'games that haven't been remade' thread made me curious if we'll see more entries in these two series.

Resistance is a fantastic aesthetic and setting that I don't think ever got a satisfactory finale. We left R2 with Nathan Hale essentially a Chimera and claiming this was just the beginning and then skip forward to old Joseph Capelli in what ultimately feels like a side story (fantastic story yes, but still a side story) more than a payoff of the previous events and I feel there isn't much closure on the series as a whole. By the end of 3, nothing has really changed. IIRC Insomniac said they were essentially done with the series, but I wonder and hope Sony will eventually continue or fill in the blanks with a new game rather than a complete reboot years later.

Killzone's story similarly felt unfinished with a huge timeskip between 3 and Shadow Fall. The loose ends don't bother me as much in Killzone, but there is certainly a ton they could do with the universe and I'd love to see what they'd do in a new entry.

So what is the general opinion on this? Are these franchises dead forever? dormant for years until someone makes a new game which is just a reboot? Personally, I feel like once a series goes several years, any returns to it end up being a reboot so newcomers aren't left out which is a bit disappointing. I mean, hell I waited decades for the completion of the Dark Tower series...

Don't think Resistance will be coming back anytime soon.

Killzone...maybe a reboot of some sorts? I think Sony do third person games well in general, could be a direction to go in ? Being a big Warhawk PS3 fan, I always wanted a game like that in the Killzone franchise, all the art styles, settings, jet packs, guns, all done in a Warhawk style.

Killzone should be dead, and I say that as a fan.

The studio can make an awesome FPS, but attaching that name to it will just always bring negativity. One magazine calls it "the Halo killer" like 15 years ago and then Sony puts out a fake CG teaser like 13 years ago and people are desperate to hate the IP for the rest of their lives.

Let me be the first itt it seems to dance on resistances grave. It was created to fit a very specific niche which was to be sonys premiere fps when ms had halo and gears and it never felt like anything more than that, imo.
They should stick to ratchet.

Never played killzone, although it had a similar purpose and fate

Both Dead Killzone mercenaries was the big final of the franchise ignore Shadow fall
Resistance 3 the big final aswell

The end of killzone 3 then the jump to shadowfall really put the series in a bad position.

Wish they would redo 3 with a better ending then start from there. Pretend shadowfall never exsisted

I understand that sentiment, but as someone who never played gears or halo until much later, they gave me a similarly 'generic' feeling. I think its more about which you're exposed to first rather than which was actually first as many of these games aren't really breaking the mold. My pining for Resistance aside, I'm always down for more Ratchet.

Killzone has a chance at coming back but now is probably a good time to come up with a secondary new IP instead since Horizon should now be the safe title.

I thought the first two Resistances were both near misses of what they were going for. Never got the third but didn't enjoy the snippets I played.

Killzone deserves a comeback. From what I understand, the games sell well enough and KZ2 was a legendary PS3 exclusive. KZ3 and Mercenary were good but didn't reach the same heights. Something went seriously wrong with Shadow Fall, felt like they were messing around with a lot of new visuals but couldn't get the basics right or piece a decent mission or map together - even the movement and gunplay felt off. Guerilla and the fanbase deserve a redemption shot to reach that KZ2 achievement again and the PS4 could really use an online shooter that hooks and retains an audience.

If we are lucky Resistence is dead. Terrible art direction, boring gameplay and just a very plain game. Killzone could return since it has been billed as Sony's flagship shooter in the past. It could be cool too if the story is allowed to be very hardcore and dark, like it currently pretends to be. Take some gameplay chances and it may be a good game.

Drop them both dead and make new IP it's not worth continuing. Resistance was a poor replica in a loose sense of gear of wars aesthetic. And Killzone was to be the Halo of Sony. But neither did a single shred of push towards that.

I thought the original Fall of Man was outstanding. Love to see it updated. I don't think many people gave it a chance, as it came out around the time of Gears of War (another personal fave), but the single player campaign was very thrilling with an outstanding selection of weapons. The cool thing was, if you beat the game you unlocked new weapons and grenades in the second play through. The enemies looked really menacing as well, and some of the set pieces haven't been topped in my opinion (besides Halo 3's two scarab fight).

It is sad Sony doesn't respect their library of titles and their fans. Killzone 2 and 3 were great as well, despite some obvious shortcomings, but I never the less include them in my pantheon of great first person shooters. I miss the cooperative elements of both Killzone and Resistance.

yeah, I don't think they will do shooters or even multiplayer games(besides MLB or Gran Turmiso) ever again. Resistance is dead,Killzone is dead, MAG is dead, Socom is dead,Warhawk is dead, SoE is dead( has to do with Sony killing them but still), etc. Most you will get is remaster versions

I wanted to like the Resistance games as they're done by a studio I love and they look fun. While I wouldn't call any of the PS3 games bad, they're all uneven in different ways and range from excellent to boring through every campaign. I like the series more than Killzone, but it's probably the deader one. Maybe I need to revisit these series, because when I played them a few years back I though they were all aggressively pedestrian.

Far Cry 3 truly is the king of non Bioshock/Portal FPS for the PS3, 4 was awesome as well and we'll see about 5.

I think Resistance has still great potential. It needs to be more darker, mature and meaner also way more difficult with lots of rpg elements a bit like Shadowrun and dark souls mixed. It really could be an amazing game/Franchise again.

They're both dead. And as a FPS fan, that's probably a good thing--neither franchise was that great (still remember the horrible, awful controls and dead zone/delay in Killzone 2). But if I had to pick one to come back, I'd choose Resistance (it had more charm and better story IMO than Killzone ever did).

Frankly, you've got significantly better franchises out there than what Sony tried to cook up during the PS2/PS3 gen. Off the top of my head there's:
  • Destiny
  • CoD Black Ops/MW
  • Battlefield
  • Halo
  • Doom
  • BioShock
  • FarCry
  • Star Wars Battlefront
  • Borderlands
  • Wolfenstein
  • Rainbow 6
  • Metro
  • Titanfall
There's not exactly a lot of room in this genre for weaksauce half-attempts like the Killzone and Resistance series.

KillZone had a fantastic run with 2 and 3 last gen. The sequel was helping promote the power of the PS3 and the game was a lot of fun. It had large scaled models, fun multiplayer, interesting level design, cool weapons, and a decent plot. The sentry bit was fun to fight against. 3 had a lot of nice details to it, the enemies looked good, and I had fun playing the campaign. I liked it.

But Shadow Fall felt awful. It left me thinking the franchise was dead in the water. The campaign felt like a beginners campaign. It was there to look pretty and it bored me to death. I don't know if I see it coming back. I bet it could. The franchise shockingly did well on PSP and Vita. I enjoyed Mercenary and I believe it was a sleeper hit for some.

I don't know if the franchise is worth spending another 100 million on if it's anything like Shadow Fall.

I owned I-8 or Resistance 1-3 at each launch. I enjoyed shooting Chimera through dark and gloomy streets. In R2 we could fight in Chicago. The gameplay was fun, especially the remote controlled shells in the sequel. It made every encounter feel well rounded and fun. The third game had awesome locations and what I thought was a good plot. But after Resistance 3 nothing happened in the industry. It's like Dead Space or even Mass Effect, we got 3 games and then the industry shifted or we got a new genre of games like MOBA or open world BR.

I honestly think they'd need leadership or guidance by a passionate team to get it done. I honestly think there are game designers who did their job and now they'll never do it again. The doctors at Bioware helped make amazing games. They retired from Bioware and look what happened? No one has that same vision or that kind of dream. There's so many talented people who make games, but they aren't always going to live up to your personal expectations.

Some of those Titles are Very Very subjective

Or tho Sales numbers will Def Paint a different Picture

that being Said wili Killzone 2 online was the Best out of all the killzone titles and was solid over all - 3 was Fun but died Fast

i thought mercenary on the Vita Had the Best Campaign .... out of all the killzone titles

So a Killzone title on the Vita was the best of the bunch? You're not exactly helping the argument that this franchise deserves life anew when its best iteration was a title on a handheld platform that didn't exactly see high numbers of western ownership. I honestly never played the Vita version of Killzone, so maybe it's all that and a bag of chips--I dunno. I never bothered owning a Vita, so I can't tell you...and neither can the masses who didn't own a Vita either.

Look--I get that there are fans of Killzone, and that's great. But the reality is that it didn't sell through because it wasn't that great a franchise, and the concepts and ideas are probably better off explored in a whole new IP.

They do? Why?
No reason, I just want Sony to finance a good fps the way they've been doing with their open world and tps games. So far in 1st parties only halo is left and metroid is coming back, a new killzone would be huge now that guerilla is on everyones radar.

There should be more Killzone games in the future. Not sure about Resistance though. I thought Resistance 3 single player was fantastic so I wouldn't mind more of it.

I had more fun in both Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 than most of the games on your list. Same analogy fits other dead series from sony (Socom > R6 Siege; Motorstorm and Wipeout > Forza Horizon 3). Sony's offerings in 7th gen were right up my alley, now they rehash the same open world action-adventure slog.

Killzone I feel could do a remaster and then release something new. The multiplayer in KZ2, KZ3 was excellent and really intense. As much as I liked the Resistance series personally, I think Insomniac games have moved onto other things like the new Spiderman game, so I wouldn't get your hopes up on anything Resistance related for a very long time, if ever.

Dead. There's no need for them. Both campaign and mp options are delivered by third parties with better results.

Resistance is dead. Didn't catch on to the level they liked. Diminishing returns with subsequent entries. Plus 3 pretty much ended with the strong impression that humanity was well on its way to defeating the Chimera (even if it wasn't on-screen).

Killzone- on infinite hiatus. But Guerilla has hit the goldmine with Horizon- which is honestly bigger and better than all of the above. Killzone was always saddled with trying to be Sony's first party answer to Halo- it was ultimately a pretty good shooter series, but didn't ever meet its lofty goals. Guess you could say the same thing for Resistance, too. And today's Halo games don't even measure up to Halo from 10 years ago.

There's no reason to make those games. Same reason why Sony no longer wastes their efforts on multiplayer games. Those genres and game types are the bread and butter of third party pubs and developers and Sony's more recent efforts have been far more successful and add variety to their console.

Resistance is definitely dead. They were never a big commercial success, although they did develop a cult fan following. I've owned them all and I do think they're worth a play, I just wouldn't say it's something more prevalent than other games you might not yet have played.

Killzone I think is dormant. Sony can use Killzone as a technical show piece. While Killzone 3 was excellent and Mercenary was a very good offering, Shadow Fall just... didn't cut it for me. First three levels were epic. The third level showed me exactly why Guerilla could make an amazing horror title. Something Dead Space-esque.

I really like this idea. The art style of Killzone was always the best part of the franchise in my opinion. Warhawk was also the best 'shooter' that Sony have put out. Mix the two together and you'd have a brilliant game.
