So ya the community manager over there at Funimation is hoping to see goku in smash. I for one would like for that to happen but I know the stance on non gaming characters in smash. What do you guys think?

I think he should be the exception to the rule and I'm not even a fan. DBZ has a big gaming presence and Nintendo tends to get them as well. I say go for it, would be big.

No. I do not want Nintendo to start throwing in characters from popular culture.

Harry Potter has had plenty of games, should he be in Smash?

I personally want Luffy instead, To me his much more interesting character than Goku, both in personality and fighting style.

Put in Luffy, Goku, Guts, GANTZ characters, i don't care. Anything with good fun character and movesets would be fun. As long as it's NOT a sword-wielding Fire Emblem character

I remember back before PSBR came out, you'd find people asking for any old character like this on forums for it. It's just silly and I think people need to refocus on the fact that this is a first party mascot fighter with relevant "cameo" characters. It's not a general all stars brawler filled with everyone and anyone. If people want to play as Goku in a game like this you can do that in J-Stars Victory Vs.

Anyway, I feel like Nintendo was already scraping the bottom of the barrel in the last Smash, Goku would be past the barrel and digging into the dirt.

Wouldn't be a bad inclusion at all. I remember in the Smash 64 days there was a rumor that you could unlock him. Of course I tried.

If any Anime character were to get into Smash, this is the best one.

I would prefer goku but I do feel that luffy would work pretty good too. little goku would probably work better but older goku is more iconic. I guess rabbids will be in the new smash as well as probably minecraft.

Well, that's not up to them, right? I think they are the company that have the lesser voice over the character, even Bandai Namco (that own a part of Toei Animation), have more rights over it than Funimation (wtf are them by the way?! Just a distributor over USA?).

Since when Goku is funimation's boy? It's Toei's and Toriyama's.
Because funimation is the biggest dub distributor of dragon ball in the west. And of all their dubs, dragon ball is by far on of their most popular and it helped get them off the ground back in the toonami days. Id say db is just as important to them as it is to Toriyama (Id say TOEI, but GT and the shitshow first half of db super happened...)

At what point will it be considered jumping the shark?

At this rate the next smash will have Rick and Morty

People care too much bout nintendo padding the roster with any and every character and not nintendo making the actual game better

Right, but the fact that Goku is important to them doesn't make him their property. Like I said, their "hope" doesn't mean anything.

I would prefer that they just made a j-Stars smash clone. I know they usually don't come out well, but if they actually tried and not just put it out like the others, it would be a competent game.

To those who think theyre being literal may be looking too deeply into it.

Point is funi wants one of the most recognizeable names in anime history to be a playable character in ssb. And i want that to happen because id rather get goku than another FE/mario/KI clone

I guess English isn't your first language... When they say "our boy" they are referring to the fans, not Funimation exclusively.

Yeah, I just said things cuz the title is a little bit misleading, but I would insta-buy a smash with Goku.

I'm okay with Goku getting in as long as they also add Christina Aguilera. She was in The Sims: Superstar and Tomodachi Life as a QR code scan. She'd have a great moveset and would totally fit in.

Please tell me your opinion on Spawn, Yoda, and Vader being in Soul Calibur?

Guest characters are always welcome if they can be added.

I'd play the shit out of fucking Jon Snow if they put his ass in Smash.

Goku has videos games on practically every single console/handheld system. I don't know why people keep saying he's not a video game character.

Also, here's his final smash:

I just don't want Goku yelling he's the hope of the universe and the terror that flaps in the night.

I’m struggling for a way to explain what a fundamentally different thing a game about crossing over other games is from a fighting game built around original characters in a way that won’t appear to insult your intelligence, so I’ll just suggest you think that through and try again.

They’re not remotely comparable.

don't know why people keep saying he's not a video game character.

Mega Man, the Pokèmon, even Kirby all ended up with animated series. But they were game characters first. That’s the key for Smash.

Noticed.

Doesn't explain R.O.B, he was an accessory.

In addition Goku is a nothing short of a national idol. His creator Akira Toriyama has a long history of creating memorable characters in games such as Chrono Trigger, and Dragons Quest. I for one think it would be a fine gesture to his legacy and commitment to their culture and Nintendo to include Goku in Brawl.

But don't worry my intelligence won't be insulted if you disagree.

Fyi there's already been a smash bros come series called Jump Superstars mainly on the DS and the playable characters include Goku and plenty of other anime characters.

So having Goku finally in a real smash game isn't too farfetched.

At this point, after decades of people calling for Goku in Smash, I wouldn't even be mad if he was included. We already got Cloud for Pete's sake, a character that has absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo. Snake's inclusion in Brawl was a bit weird too. Yeah there was that Twin Snakes game on GCN, but is that really enough of a reason to include him? Apparently so. Who knows how they decide on this stuff. They're gonna do whatever the heck they want anyway, I'm not gonna get worked up over it anymore. I'm just hoping for Daisy and Waluigi, since I already got my Inklings.

The only true inclusion that we need is Master Chief. Too much Japanese representation already.

Plus bandai made the last smash bros. They own the rights to publishing dbz games so theres a connection there

Smash is a crossover fighter celebrating everything Nintendo+gaming. Mostly Nintendo. It really starts to lose its identity and appeal if you just start throwing in random pop culture characters in there.

Snake's inclusion in Brawl was a bit weird too. Yeah there was that Twin Snakes game on GCN, but is that really enough of a reason to include him? Apparently so. Who knows how they decide on this stuff.

Kojima specifically asked Sakurai to put Snake in Smash.

Well I seriously doubt theyd choose TFS' MasakoX over Sean Schemmel for an official production.

Sean was the first one to read that stupid "I'm the hope of the universe" line xD TFS just made it better while laughting at it.

Ahh yes, good catch on that aspect as well!

I understand your point of sticking with tradition.

To me the strong reasoning of placing characters in smash is how closely tied they are to Japans/Gaming culture. As I said before Goku has earned a spot in my eyes just do to his influence.

I fully feel all of those that want to stick with gaming icons only, but all I want to say is that if they did opt to put him in I wouldn't be upset and I would understand the reasoning behind it.

It should only be historically video game characters. Not characters that have appeared in games

someone gets it, here's a general rule of thumb: the only characters added to smash are the result of a first party partnership. Nintendo wouldn't just add characters because they're fan favorites

"Funimation wants their boy"
"The community manager is hoping"
lol okay then

I remember an interview where the interviewer and Sakurai were laughing it up that people were voting for Spongebob and that is basically why Mii Fighters are a thing. So I guess you could hope for a Mii Fighter moveset where you can throw energy beams.

I'm secretly hoping Sakurai will bring his troll A game and include Goku in Smash. As in, Nintendo's own Goku. That monkey man from Famicom Fairy Tales that fights with a staff and can ride a cloud. Included because of high demand.
