Sea of Thieves over 1 million unique players under 48h and a developer launch update video.

i heard some impressions on the giantbomb podcast and looks like repetition and non RPG elements, customization, class, etc that should obviously be there at least for me isn't. See how this will last

Curious what percentage of players are using a free trial.

Yes, well that "free trial" will turn into revenue as a large percentage of those credit card linked trials will forget/neglect to cancel their subs for 1+ months. It's like the RedBox model. They make most money when you forget and/or are lazy and significant percentage of people will always forget and be lazy.

No, it doesn't count as a sale but it does count towards player counts. I'm interested to see how many people stick with the game in the coming months.
I really hope this game does well. I think the industry is more fun with completion and let's be honest: Microsoft hasn't been killing it so far.

Would love to see Rare grow alongside this game as a studio, hopefully expand, and birth some new IPs (or rebirth) in the process.

I also think gamepass is a fantastic idea and games as a service has a bright future. E3 this year should be very exciting

over 300hrs spent (if I include all my time before release) and none would I have taken back. Due to gamepass I dont think you will see Xbox titles be on top of NPD charts anymore but these days its more about player numbers and monetization inside the game which is great for them now that the barrier of entry is $10. Excited to see the numbers in 3 months when the first large expansion drops, MP games lose and gain players as new content comes so I wont really care for any player info outside of launch until then.

Been playing the game through Game Pass. Pretty good, but seems a bit shallow on content. Hopefully they are able to quickly push out new content between expansions (and ones that aren't just fetch quests). Also, hopefully my achievements unlock. Second day playing on Xbox One X and have not unlocked a single achievement. I am level 15 in Gold Hoarders, 11 in Order of Souls, and 5 in Merchant Alliance. Pretty odd.

It's #23 on Amazon hourly list, that's not great for the day after release.

Edit: Now in the 50s. It appears people don't like it enough to pay $60, so they will "rent" it.

I feel like the way the industry is now and the way games are headed (games as a service) play time and active/concurrent players is a better representation than NPD especially when you throw in GamePass.

I wish it was on ps4 as well. I don't have a Xbox and my computer is a surface and won't run it lol.

I really like the way the set it up. Maybe we will see more games like this in the future.

None of my friends will buy it and solo play isn't fun. So it's probably a pass.

I don't know about the gameplay loop but Rare nailed the feeling of the ships. I love it. Wish it had singleplayer.

It's a chore. =/
I got chest returned last night. It was a harrowing experience. Ship sunk twice, ran into two larger crews that destroyed us. Suffered skeleton death.

Eventually sailing back to the outpost with that chest felt triumphant as all get out. I was Captain Morgan'ing the whole way in.

That's when you know the base game has little to offer, when it's not fun alone and needs the usual crutch of friends making it fun, to be worth playing.

Sounds awesome, but it also makes me realize I wouldn't last long. All my friends play ps4.

I stopped caring about player count or sub count long ago. Unless it can be shown how many players are actively playing it like it does on steam using steamcharts, I don't believe it. It's just a PR smokescreen to try and sucker consumers to believing the game is doing better than it is. The games that are actually doing well don't need to resort to this kind of marketing.

Seriously dude that’s only one week of sales in UK. And I read that it sold on par with QB first week which was around 27k. This week Farcry will shit all over it. Lets wait and see before calling it a hit.
Not to mention (quoting from the article) "that the six new games in the entire Top 40 this week sold fewer units than the single new release that arrived in the charts this time last year, which was Mass Effect Andromeda". Naturally, this is physical/UK only. But let us wait for a bit before celebrating awesome sales.

How dare Microsoft talk about player activity on a game that is online only. The game sure has your attention doesn't it. Is there a Sea of Thieves thread you're not in, it's like you're on some sort of mission to denounce anything positive surrounding the game.

How dare anyone talk about it. I shit on Destiny, World of Warcraft, PUBG, EA games, anyone who talks about player count. I even did it on League of Legends, but they stopped long ago because it's useless to talk about it. It doesn't help the game succeed.

Or there could be a good portion that's having fun with the game and decide to keep it.

Seriously, I don't know who's worse of either him or Chip Chipperson

Why would you shit on games that talk about player count when the game lives or dies on player activity.

You never answered me, is there a Sea of Thieves topic you're not in?

Is it me or You got upset with my post?

Looks like some people don't want to accept that game is doing good and some people are enjoying it.

Also Comparison with Farcry not fair as it's a established multiplatform IP.

Digital sales and Game Pass sales are not counted. Only retail sales -

I just find it funny that you're trying to call people out while boasting 27k sales like its good. NMS did 3-4 times that. Ahh, i forgot to add 90k sales to digital right? Game Pass are not sales, that's a totally different service. If i didn't tell you that it sold around 27k, how much did you honestly think it sold, 80k, 100k? I wonder if you even read the article or did you just post it because of the headline that SoT was #1 in UK that week? After reviews are out now, 2nd week of sales are going to be MUCH worse.

Super glad to see the early success for SoT as I do see a base for a fantastic game but I do think it needs some tweaks and additional content drops faster than Rare probably had envisioned.

Yeah, take that Phil and Aaron!

It's almost like people want it to fail.

SoT doesn't look like a very expensive game. Sales are good enough for it to make profit.

Don't forget it's Gaas game as well. It will make more money in long run than NMS and quantum break thanks to microtransactions

If there's a Sea of Thieves OT, I won't be in that since OT's are for people playing or interested in playing the game.

"Expensive" is not based on how much content is in the game. It's based on how many people were working on it and how long they worked on it. Take Rare's team amount, and you can easily make a ballpark guess multiplied by the number of years it took to finish the game.

I think its too early to call SoT failure, especially when it's a Gaas game which is designed to make money in long run.

The downside is that they are dependant on a healthy userbase that sticks around until the new paid for content comes along. If it drops off quick, then there might be very little money to make.

Is Gaas short for gamepass? And you mentioned microtransaction, which I don't think it has or will have any. I think microtransaction will be a mistake because of the lack of content. People will shred the game apart if they add microtransactions right now.

Despite the shortcomings, I still do want this game.

It would be something that I would play a little after work and that seems like the perfect amount of playtime every few days or so according to the reviews.

In short bursts, it's pretty god damn fun...even solo I am having fun..sometimes more than grouped. The game has a great exploratory feel when your solo. I can see why streamers and reviewers would drop it and dog it though...playing it for days straight would show it's weaknesses pretty handily. Saying it again, adding a couple different game play modes would strengthen this game immediately...which Rare should be on.

Streamers are particularly down on it because they had access to the beta. The game didn't add enough for them.

If a casual does a quest once in a while, they won't burn out at all, I would imagine.

No. Gaas means Game as a Service. It will get monthly free content plus it will have pets in form of microtransactions. Pets are optional cosmetic items you can buy from store. Player base is not going away as there are lot of people enjoying the game.

As far as lack of content is concerned then I think some people are assuming there's no end game content when clearly there's after you become Legendary pirate and unlock legendary voyages which are different in design compared to Faction quests.

Every Gaas game is repetitive in nature. Destiny, Division all had very little content at launch but now Division is packed with content, same will happen with SoT as Rare is fully committed to this game.

Doesn't matter what the group of people that want this game to fail say, this game is a legit. new franchise for the Xbox platform. Always a good thing.

You're aware this takes 100+ hours of straight grinding the same 3 quests to hit max faction rep, right? Where does it say the legendary voyages are any different anyways? Source?

Legendary voyages will have riddles involved and more challenging enemies. Some will take you to different hand crafted locations.

They are different from regular fetch quests according those who tried it but they also get grindy after few hours. Listen, Iam not denying that it's not repetitive, but which Gaas game is not repetitive?

In Division I was doing literally same type of missions for months, same with Destiny. But I enjoy grinding in these games when Iam playing with my friends and chatting online. Sea of thieves is fun in same way. Now if you grinding solo then God bless you and I wish you good luck. :p
