If Sega made a Sega Saturn Mini classic with 20 games?

I just got a real Saturn a couple years ago. I'd only buy a mini if it was hackable and I could load games onto it like the SNES mini...

Here is my list (Saturn is my favorite console by the way).
  • Burning Rangers
  • Digital Pinball : Necronomicon
  • Dragon Force
  • Elevator Action Returns
  • Exhumed
  • Guardian Heroes
  • Nights
  • Panzer Dragoon Zwei
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga
  • Radiant Silvergun
  • Real Bout Special
  • Saturn Bomberman
  • Sega Rally
  • Sengoku Blade
  • Shining Force III
  • Steep Slope Sliders
  • Story of Thor 2
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Virtual On
  • X-Men VS Street Fighter
The goal of my list was to show the great exclusives of the console, demonstrate the variety of the games available. It takes into account the fact that the game still runs perfectly well even today, and made a good use of the hardware. 20 is not a lot, there are definitely other games I would have included, but I guess that's a good list by my standards.

It would very tempting but I think it might be better to just buy one of those emulator consoles that can play multiple old systems and their games. It would encourage me to get back into collecting games.

if sega wanted to be assholes they could make a limited number and then send out a bigger, second shipment a year or so later with like a 20% markup and people would buy the hell out of it

not sure if that's what nintendo had in mind with their nes and snes classics but saturn would be a perfect business model for that

My Saturn Classic. Some of the game choices seem too good to be true though.
1 regular controller 1 3D controller. (Hey at least it's a better idea than the NES classic only giving you one so you have to fight to the death with scalpers)

Nights Into Dreams
Dragon Force
Burning Rangers
Guardian Heroes
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Panzer Dragoon Saga
The Legend of Oasis
Sega Rally
Virtual On
Astal
Dark Savior
Fighters Megamix
Virtua Fighter 2
Shining Force III
Shining The Holy Ark
Sonic 3D Blast or Sonic R (It would be foolish to not have at least one Sonic game even if it isn't a great one)
Clockwork Knight
Saturn Bomberman
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (I would have wanted 3 but I guess that could be saved for a Dreamcast Classic even if it may or may not be as good)
Mega Man X 4 or 8

Would be nice but not likely.

Powerslave (Who even owns this now?)
Dragon Force II (With translation)
Radiant Silvergun
Thunder Force V
Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru
Hyper Duel
Grandia (If Game Arts is supposedly messing around with Sega Saturn source code for their upcoming remaster then it's possible for it to be this systems Star Fox 2 at least for USA and Europe users)
Also go fuck yourself Bernie.

The Saturn version of Panzer Dragoon Saga could never be on it because Sega lost the source code.

I mean doesn't the NES/SNES use emulators anyway? They could certainly make a Saturn emulator to run the game, or just use mednafen.

But I don't think you need the source code unless you are doing a Remaster. There is people out there playing it with a Saturn Emulator.

Seeing all the comments like "I've never played a Saturn" or "I've never seen one in real life" makes me sad.

I'm relatively new to the system (started my Saturn collection only a few years ago) but it is seriously the best system from that generation if you love arcade games. Neither PS1 nor N64 nor Jaguar nor any of the other systems can hold a candle to Saturn's arcade library.

If you exclude PS1 dominance, I remember that it was the 3DO and Jaguar that had a better marketing campaign during that time. A game magazine had an indepth presentation of Primal Rage and their main focus were the 3DO and Jaguar ports.

Same here! I own "only" two Shmups, though. Soukyugurentai and Battle Garegga. However, my search right now is focused on getting Panzer Dragoon Saga, haha. Can recommend Burning Rangers! But it's not really an arcade game, though. I'm still amazed by how weird the system's architecture is. Including their rendering pipeline with quads as primitves etc. But at least Sega cared about texture mapping more than the PS1, the VDP1 used forward texture mapping (well, kinda natural if you use quads anyway) whereas the PS1 used affine space for texture mapping. So, you either had to spent additional operations to correct this or you just wing it and have this unpleasant texture-warping effect. Saturn is hard to figure out, though. Both CPUs shared one bus and couldn't access memory at the same time. Quite annoying.

Ah shit son I already have mine ready!

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Mr.Bones
Three Dirty Dwarves
Shinobi Legions
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
Virtual On: Cyber Troopers
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Virtua Cop 2
Slayers Royal 2
Die Hard Arcade
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Policenauts
Sentimental Graffiti
X-Men: Children of the Atom/Marvel Super Heroes

I am legit shocked Grandia has been mentioned only twice in this thread given it is without a doubt the most well known classic jrpg of the Saturn and arguably one of the best across all consoles. Sakura Taisen would be nice as well, and SotN of course given I have never played the possibly superior saturn version.

Agreed! The system really shines on a CRT, too. Although I could get a bit more color by using SCART, the system looks pretty darn good through S-Video cables.

Oh boy, I need to try that. Haven't connected it to a CRT (don't have one currently...). I hear good things about the Trinitron TV line by Sony.

If you're CRT hunting, I'll let you in on a secret:

Trinitrons are nice. However, getting a good CRT is more about avoiding the worst brands instead of finding the "best" brands. Avoid Sharp, Zenith, and Memorex. The Panasonic Tau line is equivalent to the Trinitrons, in my opinion. Pretty much any CRT from Panasonic, Hitachi, Toshiba, JVC, or NEC are good if they're from the mid 90s to early 2000s. Trinitrons are well-built but their name is so well-known that you can easily get several CRTs for the price of one Trinitron.

Be cautious with "HD CRTs" that display in 480p or higher. Some of them have sharpening or digital processing that introduces lag.

If you delve into PC CRT monitors, ViewSonic is a brand to look out for.

Thanks! I very much appreciate the "secret" :D. Will keep that in mind!

Good list, but you missed some key titles.

Panzer Dragoon - No way should this be left off
Daytona - Shitty port or not this needs to on there
Die Hard Arcade - no explanation needed
Tomb Raider - The game debuted on the system and the colors were pure and not a dithered mess. PS still was better though =(

Steep Slope Sliders - This would be my guilty pleasure pick

Any Sega Saturn fans on this thread are welcome to visit the Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread, where I have been posting essay reviews on Saturn games for several months. We also have essays from other contributors, including yourselves if you're so inclined. We're welcome to have you!

As for a "Saturn Mini", I will once again state my long-held position that what Sega needs to do is build a single console that plays all of their home videogames from Master System to Dreamcast. Software titles could either be available as physical packages or digital downloads (or both). If you follow the digital route, then a monthly subscription fee should allow access to the entire library (the Netflix model). Today's technology would easily allow for such.

For hardware, you could either build 1) a powerful PC that runs everything in emulation, 2) a system that uses actual hardware (e.g., the Dreamcast was scaled down to a single chip in 2003), or 3) a combination of the two, like a hyper-powered Dreamcast and Saturn that played SMS, Genesis, Sega CD and 32X games in emulation. You sell the console for $99 with a controller and a one-month trial subscription.

Personally, I think there are too many good Saturn games to include in any "mini" console. I could never squeeze it all down to 20-30 titles. Again, I would just advise that you check out the Saturn Appreciation Thread for my picks.

I didn't miss key titles. I need 20 only. So I had to pick the best ones and Zwei and Saga are far superior to original Panzer. Also Tomb Raider I prefer the PSX version.

I'd be all over it in a heartbeat. The Saturn hitting in May 1995 was such a gaming milestone for me. My first taste of 32 bits. One minute I'm playing Super Metroid and Sonic & Knuckles, next thing I know I'm playing Panzer Dragoon. Literally mind blowing at the time. If they released a new mini Saturn with just the Panzer Dragoon games on it, you don't want to know what I'd pay.

You missed Virtual Hydlide, Iron Storm, and D.

It's funny how Virtual Hydlide now has this "so bad it's good" MST3K quality to it. Back in 1995, it was more embarrassing than hair metal and leisure suits combined. Iron Storm is absolutely fab and I am eternally grateful to Working Designs for releasing it in the States. D was very regarded by the Japanese videogame press, and I dearly miss Kenji Eno, who was a true visionary artist. Enemy Zero is another work of brilliance, and even received the second-highest review scores of any Saturn title in the pages of Sega Saturn Magazine Japan.

In my perfect world of the "Criterion Collection/Netflix" console, there would definitely be a Kenji Eno box set that includes all his videogames (You, Me and the Cubes needs to come back).

While this is 100% true, I think a Saturn Saturn miniconsole is significantly more likely.
More likely but Sega haven't exactly been quick of the mark to bring it out...hell they could have launched it in 2014/2015 to mark the 20th anniversary of its launch but didn't.. they are more interested in how many more genesis iterations they can bring out even now...what with their latest genesis collection releasing few months back and the mini version of that console coming up on the horizon..

Well, if they ever happen to make a Dreamcast Classic Mini, they should really consider translating SeGaGaGa (SGGG). That game is so crazy and its development so hilarious (100$ marketing budget and the producer or director spent 50$ on a fucking luchador mask), that I strongly believe it is part of the Dreamcast and Sega's legacy. Also, Phantasy Star Online, of course.

They could also make a Sega master system mini, though it most likely wouldn't sell well.

All the better reason to have one digital system that includes all Sega home systems. None of them would sell in significant numbers on their own, aside from possibly Genesis. Their brand just doesn't have the same pull it did 25 years ago. Circle the wagons and build the brand with a Criterion/Netflix console, release all the software titles, and court indie software developers for new titles.

If SEGA put some honest R&D and gave us properly emulated home systems + SEGA's arcade catalogue, along with ports (or conversion cables) for legacy controllers, I'd pay $300 for it.

Something like the Neo Geo X sans the handheld mode and shoddy hardware.

the only real game I liked on sega master system was psychic world. I think they also had the 1st sonic game. At the time though their mascot was Alex Kid I think, which was a terrible mascot.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
20 aren't nearly enough! I'd love to see never-before-translated games on it, those could be 20 alone! GunGriffon II, Bulk Slash, Dragon Force 2, Shining Force III parts 2 & 3, Grandia, Princess Crown. Nevermind including classics like PD, Sega Rally, Nights, Dragon Force and everything. And lesser known games like GunGriffon of course, they're all worthwhile! And make them all 60hz for us PAL peons. Saturn is love!

Did not include the lightgun games as they need lag-free CRT to be playable.
I'll also save Daytona USA for the Dreamcast Mini.
