“The GAF Collection” – Weekend Photoshop Thread

I dig this thread a lot -- I'd love to use it for the games I keep in my collection -- however I have the worst luck trying to print covers. Is there a definitive "use this method for printing" set of instructions somewhere?

Or something. I like the first half, not sure about the second.

Just change the first part up a bit - "The GAF Collection is a collaborative cover art/art project honouring the finest games in the world."

It's going to be part of the website.

How I do it is that I go to a printing shop (FedEx store, UPS store), and I tell them to print them at full resolution (don't shrink to print on the paper). I've only printed my covers so I don't know how it would work with the other ones. It's typically a dollar per print.

You should just take a sleeve down with you to make sure they are printing right, and show the people what you mean.

Love it. Changing the template, and putting it on the site.

Thanks Moobabe, and Joe.

I decided to do a take on the new Castlevania after stumbling across an amazing matte painting by Jaime Jasso. He is a matte painter for ILM. I'm not sure where to host the full size, but here is a preview.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I guess I somehow missed it back in the day. Really amazing stuff so I figure in case anyone else missed it too, this is their chance.

Having looked through all the pages, I think the Killer 7 one from the first remains the best of the best. Stunning work.

I tried downloading the template with the spine and the G but it ended up giving me a file not found. Anyone have the template they could repost? Much appreciated.

Took a stab at one, it isn't the right dimensions, I just made it to see what it would look like.

Click for HD.

imgur kind of crapped on the quality.

rocksteady1983: the GOW one is very very nice, great work!

I'm using my own template which I made based on one of the early covers when this thread started, I can upload that for you if that version's fine.

This thread continues to have a magical effect on me, browsing it again makes you wanna instantly open your photoshop. So I have made some new covers:

OK, I don't think this was the most sophisticated approach, but I did the following (photoshop):

- First I assembled a mosaic out of the CIV I world leaders (you can see that in the background)

- After that I snatched a hires image of the globe (http://www.vectortemplates.com/raster/globes/globes-021.png), cleaned it down to black (oceans) and white (land). To clean it down I made only the red channel of the image visible, and used the burn and the dodge tool to make the shadows truly black, and the highlights truly white.

- I used this image as a mask (select the black parts, and apply as mask for a layer group) for the mosaic, and reduced the size of the mosaic so that more leaders could be seen

- Last I added a red tint to the mosaic layer, and a white glow to the back

I uploaded the template I use, I have no idead what font the G could be, I copied it from an earlier hires template. You can grab it from here:

Well I was inspired to do some game covers as well.
I really couldn't come up with a way to put the game title on the box covers so if you guys want to do that yourselves, you're free to do that. I chose the best shots I could find and think of for them. I say the ones who did these shots captured the game/feeling very well.

Here are two covers on Final Fantasy X

Note: Sorry that the photos came out a bit blurry. I hurt my arm and its been shaking. >.< lol.
Another note: Someone in another thread that deals with alternate box arts had one for heavy rain, I used that cover for the GAF collection. =)

I remember the Silent Hill 2 one, but where were those other covers posted?

I just threw together a couple. Someone should tell the OP that the larger template links are down so I could only use the really small one.

Also, I realized that I would probably rather see these kinds of covers printed on the front of a special cardboard box rather than a plastic inlay. Just me though.

I also think I should give credit to where I got the photos from since I had to resort to semi-nefarious means to get them off of Flickr:

Been lurking this thread for ages! Figured I should contribute, since I have the day off today. Here's a cover for Persona 3 cobbled together from official art for the game and some text. If people like, I can make one for Persona 4.

High res:

A high-res printable version

There's also a .PSD and a .PNG that weigh in at 64MB and 20MB respectively, if anyone is super anal about print quality! Just let me know and I can start uploading them.

After going through so many of these, I think the ones that are using abstract photos or not using any of the original game art tend to have the most impact. That FFX and Another World ones are awesome and really capture that Criterion feel.
