I'm about halfway through the article and the man hasn't talked one bit about Gameplay, I think I'll just stop reading.

Sounds like someone playing videogames for the wrong reason, and with very specific expectations for them, he says he's 30, so basically another millennial in an existential crisis.

Tbf, he has the spirit of a bitter 60 year old.

I thought Uncharted 3, 4 and TLoU were all good. Not great, but good. But they definitely lacked in the gameplay side compared to the story telling.

The only game of there's ive genuinely thought was excellent in recent years was Uncharted: Lost Legacy, because its small scope and shorter length meant it didnt have time to be overly self indulgent with it's plot, and the gameplay didnt have time to become stale.

Sounds like his spot on target then...

I've played through them all haven't picked up that female Uncharted after number 4 really had enough, the game play is shit but the stories are usually golden.

No he's not, if you criticize a videogame and never talk about it's gameplay you're definitely the wrong one here, not the game.

And why are you pairing Uncharted and TLoU togeteher? Uncharted is a third person shooter with platforming and puzzles and TLoU is a third person survival horror game.

I'm the opposite, I preferred the more linear set pieces gameplay of UC3 and 4 compared to lost legacy's lack of direction , TLOU is very overrated imo in regards to its story but like you said, decent but not the best

Naughty Dog used to focus on gameplay. Now it’s nearly all story and set pieces with gameplay being an afterthought. I know that some people like them but for me I feel like I would be saving money by watching a movie. I miss their old platformers.
What do you consider "Gamepalay".

It's hilarious and ironic to read articles like this, especially now that gears 5 has just released.

All of these "criticisms" are ok when it's a Sony game but they don't apply to a game like Gears because...?
Paraphrasing (probably badly), gears isn't selling itself as True Art, nor does it copy paste from other media in an attempt to Citizen Kane itself. It also doesn't have a problem giving players agency.

But never having played any gears games, idk about any of that.

I mean that's great for him...but not everybody knows or can predict what he seemingly can. It's one man's opinion and he was given a podium. We have podiums too, we use them all the time, they just aren't as big as his. See watch...

I played The Last of Us on PS3 and then bought it again on PS4 in a bundle. It's a great game with some real life issues and lessons that the player can learn and while it's not my favorite playstation game, I recognize why a lot of people feel the way they do about it. I personally feel that while there are elements of the game that may have had roots in other productions, that the game did a fairly good job at conveying a great story and decent gameplay in the video game media format. When all is said and done, art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Always has been, always will be.

Boom...print that shit.

The Gears games are full of forced walking sections, instances where camera control is whipped away from you to ensure you look at cool shit and they all have a ton of cutscenes.

I saw a video review for gears 5 the other day and someone described it as "if B movies like Starship Troopers and Transformers were a game" and it's the most apt description I can think of for the series.

No, it doesn't take itself seriously but neither does Uncharted to a large extent. Uncharted is basically "Indiana Jones - the game" in almost every single way possible.

In the article he literally says "play gears" when all of the things he says he doesn't like in these types of games are very much present in Gears.

Implies that people who enjoy the storytelling in Sony games (interesting how he singles out Sony as if they are the only publisher taking that approach) are "media illiterate".
It is, in my opinion, a kind of cargo-cult storytelling, a means of placing the things that awe us in an order that those of us without media literacy will fail to recognize.
Then he talks about this
Anyways, an awful lot of people think that consuming entertainment media makes them intelligent, so enjoying The Dark Knight or The Last of Us makes you Smart, and not enjoying them means you’re not sophisticated, and if you aren’t sophisticated, you must be dumb.
After having implied that people who do enjoy The Last of Us must be "not sophisticated", therefore dumb.

And on and on he goes, teaching us simpletons the meaning of "cargo cult", telling us the obvious about cultural and entertainment memes, calling out the obvious source material that The Last of Us borrows heavily from, as if that by itself makes it an unworthy piece of entertainment.

Dear Sir, Naughty Dog are not the ones taking themselves too seriously, you are.

Seriously, the internet cannot fit the ego of this guy.

WTF is this player agency BS, I played ND games and I had player agency just fine. They are GAMES. Some more heavy in cutscenes than others, but they are PLAYED throughout and present challenge.

Is it though? It's Doc Seuss. I use to see that guy on a forum called MaxConsole decades ago. Guy was an avid Sony hater/MS lover. Then he joined Neofaf for a while and started bashing them here then left. He started writing user articles for Kotaku which were again sony bashing ones.

In this new article read the shit he has to say it's hilarious:

Gears 5:
My buddy Cory and I finished Gears 5 this morning.

We sat there in stunned silence. I wanted to cry because of something the story absolutely earned. I was thrilled and gobsmacked and heartbroken and so much more. It is the best game I played this year. Cory, as we recovered, kept describing it as ‘lean.’ There was nothing unnecessary in the game. If it was there, it’s because it had to be there.
Crackdown 3
Look at, say, Crackdown 3. Crackdown 3 is a game with lock-on instead of aiming. It’s a game where Doing Things makes you Better At Doing Things. You find dead bodies and turn them into characters you can play as. There are a lot of really cool, fascinating, fun things in the game, like the ability to pick up a car with your friend in it and jump through a checkpoint in a race that he was having a hard time ramping through. It has a spider-car. There is no game like Crackdown out there. None. It is so huge, different, weird, wonderful, and insane, and I love playing it so fucking much.

Uncharted 2:
D: A game that was not very good, had major flaws, did not have enough moments to make me want to revisit.
F: A failure.
God of war:
The critics and the gamers just did not understand their history enough to know that this had been done before, it wasn’t unique, and… honestly? It didn’t benefit the game. Gamers are often preoccupied with whether or not something is A Technical Achievement and even when they’re right, they confuse this for quality.

Not a fan of Sony's direction either, but people clearly love those games and it gives their smaller studios bigger budgets and more chances to make something different from their more successful studios.

The same can't be said for MS but Gears does mix Gameplay and Cutscenes well and I am not a huge Western Gaming fan.

Oof. It seems you missed the point and I’m not sure why it says Sony in the title when he obviously goes after Red Dead Redemption at the same time.

Somebody here put their own slant on that title.

That's right and he also belittles Bioshock. But his blog post does place a heavy focus on Sony titles.

It is quite transparent why.

Well if 90% of the “prestige games” comes from one studio it’s in thier right to point that out, but they say they hate all prestige games, not just Sony games.

The thread maker took it upon themselves to insert a narrative that wasn’t there.

I hate all the Oscar Bait movies. Does that mean I hate Sony or WB or Fox equally? No I just dislike more of the movies that come from one studio that year.

It’s Fox News level reporting designed to get a reaction, as they assume most people don’t read past the headline.

Doc Seuss is a fat, arrogant ginger prick..... all he talks about is 'how good shotguns feel' in games.

You are absolutely right though, he has a major problem specifically with Sony and PlayStation and takes the success of their exclusives personally. He always takes the opportunity to get the dig in...

He used to be on SDGC gamescast and always loved the smell of his own farts.

That sounds personal.

Do you really think you can be a fair and unpartial judge for or against this argument?

The part of the game you play.
Not sure why this gave me a chuckle.

Although I do feel UC4 did overdo it a tad on the walking segments, mostly Scotland, it was still fun.

I'm all up for set piecy type things as long as they are additions to game play and aren't substitutes.

That sounds like an ish-you, not an ish-me.

They aren’t entirely wrong in what they say, but you fully attack them based on your personal past and not in any objective way.

Probably may want to reconsider that strategy going forward.

He is completely biased, he has always hated PlayStation and attacked the games exclusive to the platform..... as shown above with God of War, if it's not gameplay he goes after story. Even though now he claims to champion gameplay over other aspects.

He has no problem with any of the Xbox exclusives and in fact, praises them... even when they are sub-par or actual trash. He is just a console warrior given a platform and his criticisms are not insightful, they are just blind attacks on what he sees as his enemy.

He is exactly the type of prick that has made games media the way it is. There is a reason he was given a platform at Kotaku.... so if you think he is not a 'woke' SJW.... you are wrong. That whole crowd was the most extreme of the political left.

It's funny that Gears basically copy and pastes UC4 jungle areas and others and even the girl has an amulet that looks like something Nate would carry... the gameplay is stiff and the gunplay is slow, the characters slide across the ground in the crouched position to cover, but he has no criticism for that!

The guy is a pathetic worm.

I guess that’s 1 side of the story. Still an ish-you, not an ish-me. I don’t know him for shit and you continue proving him right.

It sounds like he could name your favourite game, and you would argue him, just because.

It’s time to step past that junk.

Naa he wouldn't know, all he knows is his own bias. As his previous posts prove.

I'm not even a huge UC4 fan, although I liked the ending. I also think TLOU is a little overrated.

Ohhh nooooo

While I get the arguments, he is clearly wrong and should consider seeing a shrink.

Uncharted 4 had too much walking (call it pacing if you want)... These down moments should not last longer than they do in Doom 2016 in an action game like that. However, The slower the last of us had just the right amount of everything.

So do what you want with your gaming time.

Wow, that was long ^^
But I think I get it. Feel the same about those big-games. Feel like the same and the same again just with new graphics.
But I guess this happens if you've consumed to much media in your life (like I have and many here in this forum ^^). At some point you know almost everything that happens next because you've already seen it. It is hard to get surprised.
I also really liked e.g. Crackdown 3 because it was just so different. It is just dumped down, simple fun gameplay. But well.. the story was … well it could have been better.

But he forgets something in his article. There are many people out there, that did not have that background of videogames/movies that enjoy those games, simply because those situations in the games are new to them.

Tlou and Lost Legacy gameplay was sublime. Perfect marriage between top tier graphics and gameplay can't say the same about other games.
I think there are people that would disagree with those statements.

Neither one is a marriage or perfect.

Would you agree?

I agree everyone has an opinion. To me both of those has some of the best gameplay in video games. There's games that by a consensus are some of the best in the industry like Witcher 3 and Botw and I found both chores to get through. Witcher combat was ass and botw was repetitive and empty but I respect everyone's opinion and can see why ppl have polar opposite tastes. Tlou nor Lost Legacy could I put down once I started, it was awesome through and through.

Another idiot who has suffered throughout all this gen for having bet everything on the wrong horse.

"Sony's direction" is exactly the same as microsoft's , Ubisoft's , CD Projekts or Rockstar's. The only thing that tells them apart is their high standard of quality compared to Microsoft, mainly.

On top of that, their gameplay is top notch too. And they don't need to stomp on turtles for that.
