“It's time to give fans something that can only be enjoyed on PlayStation 5”

Title of the article is deliberate and carefully selected.
"I think, to the extent that the technology enables the graphics side of it to become more interesting and life-like, [the games] will become slightly more human intensive and capital intensive to produce," Ryan notes. "So yes, we think there probably will be an increase in development budgets. We don't see it as being a massive increase, and that's why we want to do more faster than we have ever done before, to provide a fertile install base for people who make games to be able to monetise against. If we can keep pace with a likely increase in development costs, then the industry can continue to prosper."
"We have always felt that we had a responsibility to serve that [PS4] community for several years after the launch of PS5 and that it represented a huge business opportunity for us," Ryan says. "The numbers are quite straightforward. If you say in broad brush figures that we have a community of 100 million PS4 owners right now, and in the first couple of years... I don't know, somewhere between 15 and 25 million might migrate to PS5, that still leaves a huge number of people with PS4s. And that community is demonstrating an amazing stickiness, and willingness to stay engaged that, I think, the events of the past few months have just reinforced what we knew already.

"But it's certainly been eye opening. Whether it's because we had a big spike in PlayStation Plus subscriptions, we make sure that that proposition remains interesting and that people want to renew. Or whether it's because all of these people have got their PlayStations back out over the last couple of months, so we try to find a way to make them want to go and buy The Last of Us: Part II or Ghost of Tsushima. I don't think we've learnt stuff that's completely new, but everything is very definitely amplified."
"We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."

Imagine its ALL black, everything aboutthe PS5 is pure black. When you play it your heart turns black and your soul is given an obsidian-like sheen - they repel all intrusion but also prevent human connection and love.

Basically what I'm saying is I think PS5 is going to usher in the Human Instrumentality Project, if we see Cerny with his hands clasped in from of his mouth its time to worry.

I hope we see something really fresh looking at the event in June, even if its a simple art style as a way to really push the new tech like super fast travel across the map or the lack of loading screens. That would be so sweet.

uhmmm Mod of War Mod of War I don't know wth is that

Sure it’s not just lighting? I hope there are black controllers for those who prefer. But really like the idea of a b/w controller and console.

Hmm I mean that's just the logical response to Microsoft's big effort to please the BC-crowd? Downplay the value. Make sure to bring up how your important games from the past will still be playable and that you're taking the rest of the money to invest into new great PS5 games instead of old titles nobody wants to play anymore.

I'm not a marketing person but that just seems like the right thing to do.

not really, there are already two games announced for the launch that are coming to XSX and not to Xbox One. the reason is that its simply not possible on xbox one:

only for xbox studio games, those will be crossplatform for the first year, but MS has enough money to be able to create different versions of the game, like they did current gen, for example forza horizon 2:

Off-road racing is a core component of Forza Horizon 2, and on Xbox One, the sensation of ploughing cross-country, blasting through detail-rich, thick foliage is one experience that feels new and exciting, helping to give the game the feeling that the title is a true next-gen pioneer in the racing genre. There's nothing to stop you driving off-road on Xbox 360, but the events structure to make the most of it is lacking - you leave the tarmac in many events, but the emphasis remains on circuit racing.

Other next-gen elements are also missing in the Xbox 360 game - specifically, the vast range of online gameplay features Playground has shoehorned into the Xbox One title. There's also no Drivatar AI either - much maligned by many in Forza Motorsport 5, comparing Forza Horizon 2 between Xbox 360 and Xbox One demonstrates how worthwhile the feature actually is - if only for the unpredictability the evolved AIs add.

Since MS has the money, I think they will do the same with nextgen for the first year, they will look and play different. its a good thing that they support their console and don't abandon it ASAP, we still get true nextgen experiences from MS AND 3rd party devs for XSX.

Whereas Microsoft appears to be blurring the line between distinct console generations, Ryan’s comments sound like Sony is doubling down on the generational divide: “We do believe in generations.” Of course, this isn’t to say that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X games won’t take advantage of next-gen power, but the explicit mention of cross-generation compatibility — for multiple years — is significant when considering the differences between Xbox Series X and PS5 at launch.

Focusing on the generational divide is probably a pretty smart marketing move, since the cross-gen support approach by MS is perceived as weak point by many. Guess all we can do is see how each approach plays out

The title was a little misleading. I assumed he was talking about actual videogame experiences.

What type of gaming experiences can be made for PS5 that we would not see on XsX? It would have to take advantage of every drop of the SSD but there has to be something that can be made.

I think adopting the Apple model as in you can play Xbox games on any model of Xbox is something all gamers should get behind. It just makes sense that you should be able to play any Xbox game on any supported Xbox console. Sony's path will certainly please fanboys, but the fact is that distinct console generations have already been blurred and are not long for this world.

Doubt Microsoft will be creating two seperate versions of their games, unless maybe if it's a game that has no online component.

Sorry, you’ll never advance gaming as a medium if you drop an anchor. Or at least prolong and stifle it significantly.

PC gaming seems to be ok.
Majority of Pc games are all on PS4 and xbx1. Consoles with a cpu that hasn’t even seen advancement in basic things like physics in the entire gen. Pc’s are also tied down.

This gen wiil be a new high tide to lift all ships. As is every gen.

So I don’t agree designing games around a legacy premise to be a positive outcome going into the future.

It appears you know nothing about the Apple Model. The Apple Model basically kills support for any software as soon as the developer stops updating their code for new iOS revisions. With Windows, you are expected to be able to find a way to run games that are 20 years old, but in the Apple Model anything three years old and not patched would not run at all.

Well I do understand the Apple model, and while I don't expect games will need to be patched like that, I was mainly reffering to the idea of having a few supported models that will play all games on the marketplace.

I hope we get to see one of those massive machines with the tentacles (name escapes me) being animated in the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel. Imagine flying on the big, flying machine (name escapes me) being chased by one.

Not all games; only games that are updated. So Apple Model has next to no backwards compatability. Imagine if a game you buy at launch, becoming unplayable near the end of the gen. Just don't even bother to bring up the Apple Model like it is remotely compatable with gaming.

Something that can only be enjoyed on ps5 eh?
Imagine an exclusive porn game. Press x to grab a boob. Then you use the sixaxix to move it left and right. I heard ps5 will have pressure sensitive triggers. You use that to squeeze the boob. If you go too hard the girl goes oooo that hurts, ease up champ. Teheee. Now I'd buy that at launch.
Jim Ryan, make it so.

Mannnnnn those new games playable only on PS5 think of the possibilities, 4 talent trees instead of three, 2 shrubs to hide in and throw rocks from instead of one, 2 sad dads instead of 1. Just endless possibilites with the genius imaginative minds of Sony devs on board.

Then we have the ssd power, jumping in between two , three, four, five six or even 7 worlds at the drop of the hat. No load times just jump between worlds just cos the jump from ps5 only is so huge.
