Dammit is this the best game ever or a by the numbers standard open world formula game but in a feudal Japan setting?

I can't get a straight answer out of you people

(shakes and slaps GAF)
That depends.

If you enjoy good games and can see that this game has a cool story, interesting characters, competent gameplay loop, fun battle system, amazing quality of life aspects for an open world game, incredible world, awesome sound effects, music and art style. This is one of the best games of the gen.

If you just want to shit on a PlayStation exclusive, you might say that it is an offensive game, because you are offended that a non japanese studio made it or that it is an assassin's creed rip off (even though it's silly, since this games was inspired by many games, like Tenchu, Way of The Samurai, Zelda and, obviously, Assassin's Creed)... Or even that the npc AI is too basic and some glitches (that are non game breaking) are immersion breakers.... Heck, you might even complain that there are no scantly clad females in it, so you can't get "hyped" about it.

Sure, anyone might dislike it for whatever reason, but being unable to see the good points of it is just weird.

For me Ghost of Tsushima is goty, but some just hate it because it's a PlayStation game... Others just don't enjoy it... You can't please everyone.

You should definitely play it when you have a chance.

You mean the woke critics, who don't even play games, didn't give a game with no black people or trans people a high score? Well I, for one, am shocked! Good thing nobody gives a shit what woke critics say except salty social justice warriors then. What matters is what gamers think and when you look at the user scores on metacritic it's pretty clear what gamers think of both GoT and TLOU2 and it's why GoT won the people's voice TGA.
People are constantly spamming the user score because of agendas and console warring, it really can’t be used for anything.
Does this look okay to you?

I really really enjoyed my time with Ghosts, still need to go back and 100 percent it at some point.

Excited to pick up TLoU2 soon and see how that compares.

Yes. Averaging out the critic score and the user score almost always comes up with what I believe is a fair score for a game. So for Ghost of Tsushima you'd get an 87.5 which I feel is correct and for TLOU2 you'd get 75 which I also feel is correct.

Okay that’s a new take. Would put Ori and Will of the Wisps ahead so I guess it works sometimes at least. But often there is no logic to the 0/10 and 10/10 spammings, some games get more and some less, usually driven by some toxic console war nonsense. Personally I just look at the critics score, even if some critics in some countries are pushing an agenda it’s unlikely that it’s happening all over the globe, most probably do their job properly.

Pretty sure metacritic doesn't take 0s and 10s into account for generating the user score, at least not unless there is an actual decent length review written. TLOU2 would probably be a lot lower than 5.7 user score if all the review bomb 0s were taken into account.

Do you really think if this game started a black woman, it would have gotten a high critics score?

Saying the hate comes from people disliking Sony or the lack of scantly clad females is a bit silly.

I love the game and got the platinum, but there is plenty wrong with it too. The game has pretty lame progression, you do some main missions, get some allies to take down a fortress of some kind and after it's done you get to a new area and do the same thing again and again. It's the sort of game you can figure out where you gonna go and what you gotta do after a few hours since it's predictable. The mongol boss, even though he was a great villain early on, was barely used after the first few hours, he pops up here but they had almost no good ideas of how to implement him into the game properly. And while some narratives were good, there were plenty of mediocre stories in the game too. The side activities repeat too often (fox, bird, spring etc...) and the game is generally poorly balanced on standard mode and you can just walk through the entire game.

It's beautiful, it absolutely nails the setting, with great combat and great sound design (the sword "clanking" sounds are incredible), but it certainly doesn't do much new or anything we haven't seen before.

That's the thing.

If the game just - "doesn't do much new or anything we haven't seen before" - Why hate it?

Some just hate the game because it's a successful new ip from Sony or for any other silly reason.

That's my point. Anyone can dislike a game, but still be able to recognize the good parts of it. There's no reason to hate Ghost of Tsushima.

I dislike games like Rachet and Clank and Mario, should I hate those games and pretend that they don't have a single good thing?

Ghost of Tsushima is basically the same situation of The Last Samurai movie (the Tom Cruise one), people that hate Tom Cruise screaming that it's offensive, white thingie, Cruise can't speak japanese and so on... It's weird. Just like Ghost, the movie it's well made and harmless, why hate it? Dislike? Sure. Hate? Ehhhh...

I'll never forget the online outrage at the white guy(Cornelius Boots) playing the flute at E3 2018. Turned out he was an expert at playing that specific type of flute and was recognized and respected in Japan. Online knee-jerk reactions are ridiculous lol

BTW, do you guys think there will be a PS5 version of this game that has improved draw distance and shadows? Haven't picked the game up yet, but would like to play the best version of it if possible.

I really hated this shitty game but I'm glad Japan went out of its way to dunk on 3rd generation "Chinese" Americans trying to take control of the narrative about "Asian representation" on Twitter. It was fun to see how absolutely furious they got at the very notion that gamers would take their cues from actual Japanese people over some Bay Area Woke Bitch.

I'm convinced Japan doesn't give a shit about Chinese. In the newest Yakuza game, the enemies you encounter in Chinatown have the same sounding voices as 80s anime fu manchu mustache Chinese stereotypes lol

I think you're looking a bit too much into "the hate" part. The people who go after the movie because it's made by western developers are a few nutcases online, nobody cares about those sort of people. I haven't seen much hate against this game at all, people seem to love it from where I stand.

The game had gay people... The Samurai was totally liberal about the gay old chick...

I can't remember a year with so many different GOTY winners or legit contenders.

The Last of Us Part 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Hades
Half-life Alyx
Animal Crossing New Horizons
Spider-Man

My personal vote would between Demon's Souls and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Wasn't their a black samurai? Or am I getting it confused with Nioh 2? I played Sekiro, Nioh 2 and Ghost of Tsushima pretty close together, so I might be getting all my samurai and shinobi characters mixed up.

I don't remember meeting any black samurai and I'm pretty sure I did everything there was to do in the game.

Yeah, my mistake, it was in Nioh 2. Based off an actual historical person.

Congratulations to Sucker Punch!

Great joy to hear and big middle finger to the appropriation outrage mob on release as a cherry on top.

Too bad you can't just celebrate that and every thread like this goes to shit with the obligatory pitting it against TLOU2, gotta get used to it.

btw, play Legends. It's AMAZING.

Cool character design.

Who knows WTF you said
People with reading comprehension skills 🤷‍♂️ ? I suggested that western games "journalists" these days care more about games fitting their political views than having good gameplay/story and that as such games that are "woke" have a better chance of having their flaws overlooked and thus receiving high scores. I mean they actually have the nerve to put out reviews where it's pretty obvious they didn't really even play the game they're supposed to be reviewing. They blatantly admit as much now without even caring like that girl from Gamespot did for Cyberpunk, it's pathetic.

It's sad seeing some people dismissing GoT's award/ success. Obviously folks that are fans of other games, that's fine. But why come into a thread talking about its award, only to downplay and dismiss it? Jesus, lmao.

Absolutely phenomenal game. First game in awhile that made me stop and go, "Holy shit, these environments!" I mean, they practically looked like animated paintings.

I'm totally content with that top 5 list too. I mean, I could be selfish about it as there are games I'd prefer to see in it, but I could certainly not downplay their selection.

The GameSpot reviewer did play Cyberpunk, for many many hours. The whole "she didn't even play the game" thing is false information that's been spread by The Quartering.

The combat being that good was completely unexpected and the mp reminded me of the goodness that was Mass Effect 3's mp. Well deserved.

Fake news by thequatering? Dude I saw her saying it on the gamespot live they did on Cyberpunk. She said she didn't do any side stuff, didn't touch the extensive crafting system, did touch weapon customization, didn't do dynamic events because they involved helping the police and she didn't want to help the police of course cause she's some kind of ACAB degenerate, and she said she was disappointed that she had to use guns, she wanted to only talk and hack, cause she doesn't like shooting games, then why the fuck is she reviewing Cyberpunk.

She completed the main story and also put 30 hours into the side quests. That's enough time to give a game a score.

If the The Quartering had read the review he was criticising, he would have known that the side quests were her favourite part of the game and she's someone who was very much into the role playing side of things (which is why she wanted an alternative to guns, she wanted to roleplay as a hacker).

In the video he makes assumptions about her not liking RPGs and not doing side quests which are simply not true (and his clickbait video title isn't true either.) He should have read her review and not just watched the GameSpot live video.

He's right that she didn't put extensive time into every part of the game (crafting and emergency quests being the main ones), and there's definitely an argument to be made that when reviewers have deadlines to meet they don't play games as thoroughly as people who buy them.

If his argument had been "she should have played all parts of the game and not just the parts she found interesting" then I would have agreed with him.

My apologies, the GameSpot live video was the one TheQuartering used and he put "she didn't even play it!" in his video thumbnail. I thought that was where your wrong information had come from.
