In The Thick of It was not picked up, so it won't be airing.

Edit: And yeah, Gilmore Girls had problems before Amy left, and she basically created one of those problems with last year's finale. The show was headed off the rails, so the speak, before she left (Luke's daughter, anyone), but it was an issue of her not being there to pick up the pieces. She was a destroyer and rebuilder, and when she doesn't complete the process it's bad news.

I'd put it as a definite at this point; the show held up well against Grey's/CSI, and Reaper (One of The CW's confirmed pilots) fits in well with it and would be a strong companion piece.

And ditto on Cavemen; it's existence hurts my brain.

I'll copy this from my ABC preview, since I think it sums up my view on the spinoff quite succinctly:

I’m going to lump the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Private Practice in here, with a few caveats. First, ABC, the show’s recent ratings success was not a proper barometer. The show being interspersed with Grey’s forced us to watch it, but you have no proper idea of what people really thought. Personally, I believe that the spinoff seemed decent because Grey’s has been so terrible recently; when the show ends up on its own, I’m not entirely sure what I’ll think about it.

ABC, and most networks, are big on familiarity right now. It's why NBC is scheduling an extra 18 episodes (6 of Earl, 6 hours of The Office = 12 normal episodes) of existing comedies instead of risking ordering another one, and it's why ABC is spinning off Grey's Anatomy. In the era of the procedural drama where there can be three successful CSIs, why not two successful Grey's Anatomy shows.

However, like I say above, the spinoff's debut was not a proper barometer for its success, and I think that the show will without a doubt face a cooler reception upon its debut. I don't expect it will hurt Grey's too much, however...it just doesn't seem too likely considering that show's rabid fanbase and the level of drama it is achieving. That drama has made me horribly uninterested in the show, but I think it will work out for them.

At the very least, I'm interested enough in giving it a chance before acting all know-it-all months in advance on a message board. If it sucks, it sucks. Big deal. The point is that the commercials were amusing because they were 20 second commercials.

It's the same "joke" in every commercial. How does that apply to a TV show? It's just a horrible idea.

Probably for the best as apparently the creator of the British show was pissed off that the TV execs had been missing the entire premise of the original and taking out its bite.
Too bad as it not only had a great writing cast behind it but also some decent comedy actors in Michael McKean and the guy that played Wayne Jarvis in AD.

"Heroes: Origins" will air in "Heroes'" Monday night time slot when that smash hit takes a hiatus. The net has ordered six segs of "Origins," which, combined with "Heroes," makes for 30 hours altogether.

"Heroes: Origins" will center on characters not yet seen on the original show. Peacock has also added an interactive element to the show: Viewers will be asked to pick their favorite character from "Origins," who will then join the cast of the full-blown "Heroes" skein the following year.

The NYTimes TV critic is blogging from the upfronts and has a few snippets about the new NBC shows today.

"The Office" is expected to get the 9 p.m. tentpole slot, with "My Name Is Earl" at 8, "30 Rock" at 8:30 and "Scrubs" at 9:30.

NBC will pick up six one hour eps of "The Office" for a total of 30 segs. The net picked up just 18 eps of "Scrubs"; in the weeks that the medical laffer doesn't air, net will air a one-hour episode of "The Office."

ER has gotten nailed recently, especially after the two-hour Grey's episode. It was doing well earlier in the season, but just hasn't had any momentum. They're keeping it on Thursdays because it's a relatively safe haven for the show, and they had given it a two-year renewal so had no choice but to keep it. They're being safe, which is frustrating but what can you do?

Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment, today outlined ABC's plans for next season and unveiled the network's 2007-08 fall schedule before a crowd of ABC affiliates and representatives of the advertising and media communities at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall.

Scheduled to debut next season are four new comedy series: "Carpoolers," "Cavemen," "Miss/Guided" and "Sam I Am"; along with seven new drama series: "Big Shots," "Cashmere Mafia," "Dirty Sexy Money," "Eli Stone," "Private Practice," "Pushing Daisies" and "Women's Murder Club." Alternative series "Oprah's Big Give" is also slated to debut.

In addition to the new series, ABC previously announced season renewals for "Brothers & Sisters," "MEN IN TREES," "Ugly Betty," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Desperate Housewives," "Boston Legal," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Dancing with the Stars," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "The Bachelor," "Supernanny," "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Wife Swap."

"October Road" and "Notes from the Underbelly" will return for second seasons as well.

"We're heading into the new season with a strong lineup of returning shows that we've developed and nurtured over the past few years," said McPherson. "That solid foundation will help us launch an exciting development slate as we continue our forward momentum this fall. We're dedicated to working hard week after week to deliver the best stories and most memorable characters on TV."

During the 2006-07 TV Season, ABC's first season in decades without "Monday Night Football," the network solidified its dominance with women and in all upscale measures. And with the addition of "Ugly Betty," "Brothers & Sisters," "October Road" and "MEN IN TREES," ABC has added a new generation of broad-appealing, young, accessible dramas to its roster. ABC is the #1 network with Women 18-34 and Women 18-49, and is currently in second place for the season among Adults 18-49, leading both NFL-fueled CBS (with "Super Bowl 2007") and NBC (with "Sunday Night Football").

Excluding sports from the mix this season (to account for the loss of "Monday Night Football," the 2006 "Super Bowl" and the Bowl Championship series) ABC is the No. 2 network to Fox among Adults 18-49. The network airs 7 of the Top 20 TV series in the key young adult sales demographic. ABC retained 99% of its Total Viewers, 100% of its Adult 18-34 audience and 95% of its Adult 18-49 audience year to year in the "non-sports" averages. Additionally, ABC marked its second straight season as the No. 1 television network among advertiser-prized upscale, high-income Adults 18-49 (with/$100K+ annual income). And ABC is the only network whose May Sweep performance is up from a year ago.

As previously announced, "Saturday Night College Football" will return for a second season on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 (8:00 p.m., ET).

The first primetime series from Harpo Productions centers on the competition, drama and emotion as millions of dollars are given away to make a difference in people's lives across the country. Each week contestants will face a "big twist" that will test their nerve, drive, ingenuity and passion. Big name stars will turn up throughout the series to join the "Oprah's Big Give" tour. During the eight episodes filmed in various U.S. cities, the field will be narrowed. The stakes will get higher and higher, with one person ultimately being chosen as The Biggest Giver. ABC's schedule is really boring. The only bubble show missing is indeed According to Jim, although we do have confirmation that Lost is moving. They still kept their hour-long Dancing with the Stars results show (Ugh), and didn't really do much with their existing shows (Putting a male-focused drama after Grey's? Um, okay?).

Pushing Daisies is from Bryan Fuller (Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me), so it has potential, but the rest? No thanks.

I need to watch those clips later. I watched the ones for Chuck last night, and it looks charming enough. It's a bit slapstick at one point, but nonetheless I think it's fast-paced enough.

Only one of the new shows NBC picked up I might watch is Life, because it seems like they'll try to have the main character be like the House of cops. The rest look laughably bad in the clips NBC put up.

Metacritic is filling in the Fall 2007 schedule as the upfronts move forward. So far just the NBC/ABC shows. I think they're updating it daily, and it's a good, quick summary of what's going to be on when.

Yeah, that actually sounds pretty damn good. Bryan Fuller also wrote the best Heroes episode ever (Company Man).

I think it's because his hot wife decided to leave the show so she could have kids. can't have a show without her, that's for sure.

not much I'm interested in, frankly. And I just know the summer will be full of advertising for these shows, so much so that I won't want to watch them anyway.
