Over these holidays I've noticed an increase interest in the Wii and I know a couple of friends who have searched for one without success... so is the sold out just because 10 units where shipped to Italy?

Always been like that, and probably it'll always be.

Actually, much like its older brother (PS2) was before, Playstation 3 is the new hot system the casuals (and tech lovers) go for, then the "hardcore" gamers just go multiplatform with PS3 plus Wii/X360.
PS2 is still families platform of choice, cheap and with tons of bargain priced software offering great variety, and that's why it's still predominant in the malls videogames' section. The other big chunk of space shelves goes to NDS with a massive presence of accessories. Wii and 360 are about equal, PSP gets near to nothing even hardware wise (and yet PSP system's sales are great, almost a million).

Nintendo Wii owners seem to be kids/olds Nintendo's enthusiasts from the good 'ole SNES days.

What's good for Nintendo is that DS is still a smashing success (much like GBA was) and that Wii is proving a viable platform after Gamecube's disaster.

Xbox is not much of a factor here.

But still, we'll have to see how it goes since even DS was proving a slow seller here even when the crazy started in the whole Europe, then after a while its sales skyrocketed..
PS3 is a monster, considering it launched at €600 and only in March '07, but if Wii managed to stay neck to neck with its main HD competitor it would still be considered a great achievement by Nintendo Italia.

Impressive Sony performance overall. Really interesting to see that Wii doesn't seem to catch with the audience - whereas it leads in Spain (which was also Sonyland before).

Going by the admittedly anedoctal and limited experience I have, every person buying or interested in buying a ps3 is doing so because of what is to come, i.e. not because of the games currently out (apart from soccer titles).

Most people just think it's going to get the same support as the PS1 and PS2 and for what they are concerned, it may even be true as all I see on my friends' PS3s is PES.

Similar to here in Spain then, three guys I know bought the PS3 last Christmas because they wanted to play Pes2008, I said to them that why didn't they wait, because PES2008 is horrible and is the same game that in the last years, then they said that they want too GTAIV, I responded that both games are and will be in Xbox360 too, none of them know it, but they assumed fast that the Xbox versions will be worst. :lol

microsoft needs a price drop in europe pronto, I know they publicly said they are moving resources from japan to europe, but they need to do it pronto.

Nope, the perceived image is much more important, and here X360 does equal to poor reliability and fps/racing games only.
For the former I dunno if at this point they'll ever be able to change that even if MS pops up a new "issues free" model, everyone who knows the brand is associating it with the horro stories heard in gaming circles; for the latter more variety is much needed.

thats just funny. They play PES2008 because it is the best PES ever and because they play PES 90% of the time they play games.
