30fps vs 120fps side by side in WRC 9

WRC 9 just updated and added a 120fps mode and a 30fps graphics mode. I raced both and put them side by side and noticed a 5 second improvement in 120fps mode in the first 1 minute of the race. The lead got larger the longer the race went. In sim racers where every input is critical, 120fps could mean the difference between 1st place and 5th place. Not only improved racing, but the game is more fun because you feel more in control of your ride. Every competitive shooter and racer should have an option for 120fps. Please note the 30fps mode is native 4k but shows here as 1080p due to Twitter limitations and the 120fps shows as 60fps, but still gives you an idea of performance.

Who's all gaming on a 120fps set or plans to? Anyone prefer the 30fps native 4k mode over 1080p 120fps?

R6 siege is another game which benefits from a 120fps mode...i prefer this option over the 4k
I would say that any first person game can benefir from this, even if it's not very fast paced.

And yeah, 4k is cool but give me smooth and responsiveness every day.

Its huge in R6. Without 120fps, it feels laggy and nearly unplayable. 120fps is def a game changer in shooters, especially tactical ones. You should try Halo MCC, looks and feels amazing.
Black ops cold war i didnt notice the difference as much....i cant put my finger on it as to why
the game is smoother but i didn't notice any improvement to my game at all...it may be due to the netcode

I mean I’m looking at this video on a cell phone but the difference in visual quality looks minimal compared to the advantage that 120fps brings.
Anyway I agree 120fps rocks this gen.

This video does zero justice to the real world experience, all it's meant to showcase is how racing on 120fps improved performance (faster racing 4+ seconds). Twitter limits resolution to 1080p and 60fps, so 120fps can not be seen in the video. If you watch on a PC monitor, the difference between 30 and 60 stand out more however.

Agreed. Perhaps because CW is already very responsive at 60fps (whereas R6 isnt). MW seems to have more impact for me than CW. You should try Gears 5, big improvement there.

not just for competition, of course you want more frames just for looks alone

im playing flight simulator now in 30 fps and it's okay but i'm definitely looking to upgrade for dat smoothness

I actually didn't feel much of a difference in Halo tbh. in CoD it was very obvious instantly, also in Fortnite... but not in Halo for me.

it honestly felt like that 60hz camera refresh issue that the PC version had (or still has... not up to date on that one) where the mouse input/camera only updates 60 times a second no matter your framerate.
it doesn't look or feel like 120fps at all to me in that case.

Yeah, I figured. Was thinking of actually picking the game up then I can see for myself. Still think I will opt/settle into performance mode though, especially since it’s a racing game.

120 fps makes very little difference to me. I've tried 90, 120, 240 on the same game and my monitor was up to 300 fps. It's certainly nice to have as high fps as possible but it doesn't make any difference to me (90-240), very-very minimal and not worth the horse-power. 30 fps vs 60 fps is pretty obvious, though. I struggled with Red Dead 2 on PS4, Monster Hunter World on PS4... got them on PC and felt like it's a totally different game.

The only massive advantage of 300fps monitor is the interface. Interface in the game is so much nicer to use, especially if it's an MMORPG like FF XIV or WoW where you do a lot of cursor dancing. I actually keep FF XIV at 300 fps but put the FPS limit to 60. This way the actual game runs at 60 but the cursor remains at 300. Very satisfying and honestly going back to 60 fps cursor just feels too slow.

So, to summarize - 30 fps needs to go away. I don't care if developers want to make good graphics, just needs to go away. 60 fps should be the standard and maybe offer 90-120 fps modes for those who want it.

I'm very optimistic about this gen, in particular because we see a lot of these past-gen games running at as high as 120 fps. Nioh Collection, DMC 5, Call of Duty I believe is at 120? PS4 couldn't even run GTA V (PS3 game) at 60 :D

Does anyone know if the difference between 60 fps and higher is more noticeable in first-person view games? I've tried higher FPS only on third-person view games. Maybe I should try it on Resident Evil 7 or something like that..

Been gaming around 200fps for a long time now on pc. Great to see consoles catching up a bit.

Yeah, I hope GT7 and the new forzas have a 120fps mode. Then again i'd just opt for the 60fps mode and enable bfi, since you can't do bfi at 120fps. Good if you value respoonsiveness above all else though.

I don't think anyone will argue that 60 FPS is worth the needed trade-off most of the time. But, I personally don't see/feel the difference past 60 enough to worry about it.
Depends on what type of game it is, I prefer the fps above 60 if there is fast mouse controls, with 144hz gsync screens I always go uncapped. But with a controller I don’t think it matters as long as it looks smooth.

I really don't care. I've had 240hz and 120 is not enough of a jump from 60. 30 to 60 is very good but 60 to 120 it depends on a game and controls.

I personally switched to 4k60 freesync monitor and just play at locked 58fps. But 30 is fine for me too. Uncharted 4 is a great example of good 30fps. Or god of war. I think graphics are more memorable to me than 30 is a problem.

I checked 120fps mode in wrc9 and it's subtle difference vs 60fps and deffinitly worse graphics so waste of time, balanced 60fps mode is a way to go

I'm still patiently waiting for Omega Collection 120fps update. I mean, it's got to happen hasn't it??

CANNOT overstate my surprise at it not being included in the PS Plus Collection.

My performance in Dirt 5 is noticeably better in 120fps mode but I will say, I notice the improved frame rate on slower moving objects! I think fast moving objects my brain mostly filters out so not much attention is spent on them.

120 FPS ? the fuck that shit is shit. srsly

either support 360fps or GTFO that is the new standard. The rest is ancient and unplayable

High refresh displays have been a must for anyone playing CS:GO for ages. Everyone that makes the upgrade speaks of higher precision and skill/performance gains.

What monitor do you have?

This gen will make everyone (i.e. console users) understand that 60 is the bare minimum, and that variable refresh rates on monitor is a must.

It's good that consoles are starting to support it. Hopefully the ps5 can follow suit shortly.

You could use this chart, but your brain doesn't work with real numbers.

There's a big chance that you can do better at competition if you have more frames

Competitive play exists on PC, not consoles (with FG as exception), and the context of this topic is around consoles & SP games. Esports is a different conversation altogether.

This is so wrong... showing a 30 vs 120 fps comparison on a player that probably allows only for up to 30 (60?) fps and most people probably won't even know that they can't see 120fps videos on 60hz screens anyway.

I guess that EVO and many other events are collective delusions

Never tried 120fps on pc, 60 is the sweet spot for me and my hardware.

But i won't lie, i'm kinda curious...

60fps used to feel so smooth but after watching my friend playing on his 240Hz monitor 60Hz feels like I'm turning the pages in a book with arthritic hands, licking my finger to turn the page between each image. 30fps is like watching Bob Ross paint each image.

Again, the video is not intended to show the visual differences, but rather the performance of racing at 120 vs 30. The video shows the improved racing on the 120fps mode, that's it. There is no way to capture and post 120fps gaming at the moment.
