$399 PS5 is significantly more expensive than a $299 XSS or a $499 XSX in the long run. Here's why

The quality argument that Sony fans claim is evaporating in front of their eyes, the last couple of MS titles released were rated anywhere from 85 to over 90, but they are in denial and are trying to write them off with their mental gymnastics.

Xbox is simply the much better overall package when it comes to the ecosystem in which you will spend the next 5+ years into that is undeniable.

The last couple of titles were in the 80s and suddenly they're on par with Sony? What? Even 5 in a row doesn't prove that.

The actual sane argument is that Sony is pricing their first party games at $70/each while Microsoft and most third parties appear to be sticking with the $60 price point. With the digital PS5 you're locked in to the digital prices which will probably remain high.

So - if you plan on buying 10 or more games next gen, the Series X should come out to be the cheaper console, even without factoring in Game Pass or the ability to buy used games.

How many AAA first party MS games have been announced so far where pricing was made available? They are pushing gamepass, you aren't likely to get anywhere near as much AAA content on Xbox as you will on PlayStation from first party, MS's own people have said AA will be the focus so it's comparing apples to oranges.

Don't count on 3rd party sticking with $60 long term either, Ubisoft was very careful in their wording when talking about this, since the launch window games are cross-gen they'll keep them at current prices but once they start going next gen exclusively and costs go up you can bet the prices will go up too.

MS trajectory is certainly going up as they have heavily invested in good studios and are now fully committed to their 1st party studios something they didn't do this generation. In the meantime Sony's has been a bit wobbly with titles like Days Gone, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us 2 coming rather short when compared to God of War and Ghost of Tsushima.

I would rather pay $2000 if I'm forced to for a PS5 than being forced to only take XSX for free with every first party game being for free and GOLD for free. I respect my time and hobby.

Soccer moms gone spend more on this stuff for kids playing fortnite and minecraft. They gone see that 300 dollar option + gamepass and pounce this Xmas to be honest.

Plus lets be real lol, Animal Crossing just gonna continue printing money

This makes me want to buy you a Series S for Christmas, just to see it mistreated like an unwanted child. Maybe you could do a photo diary showcasing the neglect. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

We had Xbone at home (not sure were it disappeared, in the closet?), my sister mistakenly bought it. Never seen its startup in my life in person. :lollipop_tears_of_joy: I mean, even the little kids at home never touch it.:messenger_winking_tongue:

Wait, so you're telling me I can spend less money for more White Castle Cheeseburgers in 1 year than In and Out Cheeseburgers? I'd be stupid not to fill up on crap for a whole year and throw my personal preferences out the window.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to go preorder Xbox Series S right now and you think I'm joking!

*goes to complete checkout of PS5 console preorder*

For the record, as gamers we are lucky in the year 2020 where the cost of phones have reached $1,500, tech and cost of living is an all time high, we get to choose from the most powerful systems ever released for the cheapest they have been in decades. You can prob thank Microsoft for that. This thread isnt meant to knock PS5 and its value, but rather to give perspective to those that think the $399 discless PS5 is better deal than the $299 XSS or $499 XSX.

The $299 XSS is underpowered (but still solid) but thats the point. Its targeted at budget minded folks or those that could care less about 4k. It also serves as a cheap secondary system, and a competitor to Switch. The true next gen systems are XSX and PS5, PS5 happens to offer a discless option for $100 less, but is it really saving you money in the long run? How many games can you afford to actually play on it?

Lets take a look at a theoretical 1 year cost for both systems:
  • $399 discless PS5 + 5 first party titles + 1yr PS network $60 = $810
  • $499 XSX + 5 first party titles + 1yr gamepass ultimate = $620 ($601 if you use all access financing which is zero down)
keep in mind the $620 you pay for XSX gets you hundreds of titles spanning gamepass and EA access, whereas your $810 on PS5 gets you what you only the 5 games you paid for (not counting the free games given on both services).

5 first party titles most people would want in year 1:
Sony: Demon Souls, Miles Morales, God of War, Ratchet, Horizon Zero
Microsoft: Halo Infinite, Hellblade, Forza Motorsport 8, Fable, Everwild

More points to consider
  • Aside from this you get a disc tray with XSX which means you can buy and trade used games saving you more money. 3rd party games like COD, Watch Dogs Legion, Cyberpunk, Need for Speed etc could be traded once purchased on XSX, not on discless PS5.
  • XSX is more powerful and there is a good chance 3rd party games will look and run better, so there is that.
  • Lets not forget the XSX while $100 more, gets you a vastly superior BC model spanning thousands of titles across 3 generations, many of which are enhanced with 4x resolution and 2x FPS. On PS5, you get about 30 PS4 titles announced so far....
  • Also, you get Xcloud which is included for free with gamepass ultimate, you get to play a large library of top rated titles on your mobile device adding even more value.

Bottomline, you will spend a lot more gaming on PS5, so don't let the $100 savings on a discless PS5 be the main reason you go with Sony, because in the bigger picture you spend much more and get much less. Obviously most gamers will go where their favorite games are, but if you are torn then this is something to consider.

Personally, I will get a 3000 series GPU, an XSX on launch with zero down and use gamepass to continue my games in my bedroom when im not at my desk. A PS5 for me perhaps when God of War and Horizon come out.

You listed 4 XSX games that aren't releasing until 2022 at the earliest and Halo Infinite which looks bad. PS5 is about quality so the price is worth it to people who want that quality. We pay premium for premium products with everything else in life and this is the same. If you want to order from the value menu then you'll get what you pay for. Be happy with that instead of trying to tell others what they should do with their money.

Xss its just dead in ps5 digital world for that price. Xss not even half next gen power. Why even bother. And not alk ppl even do online gaming i never did on current gen and never will.

OP, did you see the Halo infinite game play reveal?

I am still recovering from the depression I experienced after that last Xbox game showcase

I was thinking this exact thought this morning, the series s with gamepass is actually great value compared to the PS5DE, despite the big hardware difference.

The PS5DE is a sick joke with $125 AUD games, Sony knows it, but will grandma know it? poor little johnny-six-pack

full disclaimer will be trading in my pro and X1 for the disc version of both next gen consoles.

Sony has the advantage of a few great studios and their output but I actually think the xbox hardware and software ecosystem is far ahead in many ways.

I suspect just like this gen my Ps5 and switch will gather dust between a few big exclusives, majority of gaming to be done on PC and xbox.

Gamepass is great but what if you're not going to play 98% of what's available?

Wow thanks for showing me the light OP. With all these "educational" threads popping up I can't decide if I should switch to PC or to Xbox. This is going to be tough.

Anytime my man, that's what I'm here for. If you need life advice, like how to talk to a girl, I can help you with that also. Cheers mate

Can't believe how many people get triggered by Gamepass's existence. The math checks out. :messenger_sunglasses:
Ahh finally someone who doesn't get emotional over this stuff. Funny part is I bought a ps5 today and people prob think I'm an Xbox fanboy for my post but honestly I was just doing the math and looking at things solely from a cost perspective.

In what world is $400 SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than $300? The Specs for Series S is absolutely garbage for the $100 deficit. What're you even talking about?

Sony doesn't have a solid subscription service that competes against GP. All first party games are going to be $70 per game. MS 's games are on a service that cost $10 per month. Quality of the titles is subjective, but the math is there.

This simply because Sony hasn't offered a strong valued alternative and cannot offer a service like GP based on PSNow's price. Whether people accept it or not, Game Pass has no doubt disrupted the economics of game development and has left Sony in a tough spot to offer an alternative.

Series S is best value for money. I find 1440p good enough and with GP its a great console on the side I won't buy any game for.

PS5 399 is a good deal too. You can get physical cheaper but I don't buy that many games anymore. I can also wait for digital sales which are usually good. Its as expensive as you want to make it. Can you wait for discounts, or do you buy one game per 3 months? Or do you just want a subscription model?

I am more and more finding myself leaning towards a sub model. But Sony doesn't really have that and I prefer their software. Thats why I'm going to give the S a try, play the EA games etc on that. Not buying those for PS5.

To be honest, I have always been a Playstation Person. Games were always more attractive to me and I am not the biggest fan of Shooters and Racing Car Games. By the end of the day I still owned a XBOX ONE S and a Nintendo Switch so I cannot really say I am a complete fan boy or stupid in love.

Looking at the current situation I'll tell you what my thoughts are and what is about to change:

A Sony first Party Game in a European Country paying in €, let's say like Germany, will cost €79,99. Buying the digital edition will only be making sense if I keep trading these purchases with a friend of mine and we stay able to share games. With that I will be buying a game and both of us will be playing the game, afterwards, He will be buying a game and both will be playing. Combined we save 100€ + 100 € for 2 Consoles and each one only has to pay every 2nd game. A lot of exclusives to go through before it becomes disadvantageous. With that concept staying active it does make sense long term as we will also not really buy every single game DAY 1 and we will be hoping for these "flash sales" - that have been really good at PS Store...

Now, the flipside is, that Multiplattform wise the situation turns completely. I own a very capable PC and most of what I am seeing is coming to PC. All of my friends own PCs not all of my friends own PS. This leads to the situation that I do not really see a reason why I would give a damn about buying these games on PS. Even if they would be €49, €59, €69, by the end of the day they become much cheaper much faster on PC with all the outlets for CD Keys there are and yes, I want to support the industry, but I am not going to become Jesus for the industry..

Finally, it has really become reality that I am going to buy PS5 late, potentially very late, as I do not see any reason to own it until further notice.
A lot of games are showing availability on PC and it doesn't really make sense for me to force it. It is what it is right now and I won't be joining forces with a console that doesn't offer at least 5-7 exclusives and that I do expect earliest to be the case 2021+.
Ultimately, this could make the XBOX concept attractive to me. If the GamesPass becomes attractive to play mutliplattform, MORE attractive than buying it game-by-game and especially in a timeframe where I will have time available to play a lot, I can imagine buying into the value proposition of the GamesPass Offer.

With this you see that this generation might not become close in terms of sold console units in the mid-term. However, it might become very close in terms of who uses which concept to play which games. XBOX Games Pass might become the ultimate strategy of MS to actually set a foot back into this game and become VERY relevant.
Exciting times ahead of us, at least, if you don't have a stake in Sony for whatever reason and need to defend it heavily.
Without having any conflict of interest I don't see how you can judge PS5 as unbeatable and the best Value Proposition Day 1.

How about no?

There is option to wait for sales or buy used, you know? if money is an issue, then smart people do that anyway, not waste it on some expensive online services.

Here:

ps5 499-529€ + 5 games used 30-40€ (within 1-2 weeks from the launch, I have always done this without problems to find them) = 150-200€ + ps+ for 45-59€

xsex 509 - 599€ + 12.99€ gamepass x 12 months = 155,88€

Conclusion = PS5 may cost more, but at least there is games to play.

Game pass is good deal only to those that are already invested in xbox ecosystem, or like MS style games.

For rest of us it is like getting gay porn tv service as straight guy, may be cheaper than straight porn but there is nothing to watch. :messenger_beaming:

Yeah it is fun to make these comparisons but games are the main selling point besides the brand people like, so price alone wont change it.

How much is GamesPass if you purchase it in ANY month, how much is a single month?
You can always play the Multiplats on your PC if you own one tbh..

The XSS is a waste of time and space. Mark my words the PS5 digital will crush it at market.

7 years to get some 1080p gimped system.

The same will happen with the disc version.

Ill stick with my ps4 pro and unplayed games.
So much this.

I’ll buy a new console maybe next year at some point, depends how good the libraries become. I’m not diving in day 1 to play only a handful of games that I can’t play on my current console.

This is what actually move consoles.:

The games that top the charts on NPD are the true system sellers because they represent what people actually want to play.

Geoff Keighley said it best. Gamepass is a basic cable package when people really want HBO. Games of Thrones got people talking around the watercooler the next day.

Fable is year 1?

Did you also forget the PS plus collection which would be part of the equation?

Anyway, it's a matter of choice... I had a look at the gamepass list and only ~10% were interesting to me
