3DS Ambassador - NES games are available for download... now!

The NES app should also require you to blow into the 3DS mic before a NES game will start.

The DSi Version of Dark Void was structured like a NES game and had this exact mechanism to start the game. There was a picture of a NES cartridge on the screen and you had to "blow" on it to start the game.

...YES, it looks like SHIT.

I hate fuzzy filters as much as the next guy but as filters go the 3DS NES games don't seem to be that bad at all. I thought they were very crisp this morning. So if you think it looks like SHIT then I would say you are a purist and are engaging in hyperbole. Not Perfect does not equal SHIT.

I let someone borrow my 3DS... it's been 2 months now :(

How long are these games up for?

They're yours. They are as if you bought them, so until the day the eShop dies after the great robot or zombie apocalypse (whichever comes first), you can get them.

Theres no way to save in Zelda 1 without dying is there? I know on the NES version you had to press start and up on controller 2 to bring up the save menu.

Oh, that's why, good to know.
When would it be available in Europe? No details as of yet?

If this follows NoE´s usual eShop-update routine, you can expect the NES-games at midnight Thursda/Friday.

I guess there's no way to change control schemes? I want Y to be run and B to be jump in Super Mario Bros. :(

Yep.

That kind of ruins the whole thing.

It's like playing the NES games on the Classic Controller all over again.

And I guarantee they'll do the same thing with the GBA games.

Damnit...it makes them nearly unplayable.

Man, I really don't like the D-Pad or buttons on the 3DS for Mario. :/

I want to have the Y button be run so that it's in a more natural position for my thumb to press it and be able to hit the jump button more easily. Maybe it's the bigger Nyko battery I have on my 3DS, but holding the system and using the d-pad is kinda awkward for me.

Personally I would have preferred the buttons and d-pad from my GBA Micro. They feel so perfect. <3

Know my son will be excited for this when he gets home from school today. He has no idea he's getting all these games. Do I need to do anything first, like enter his serial number online somewhere, or just jump into the e-shop later?

AftAsher said:
No they're not, this is not our opinions, it's a fact.
Source for your fact? 3ds resolution is 400 x 240 nes is 256 x 240. There's no reason to implement a filter when the nes resolution will fit within the screen.

Get on e-shop then: Menu > Settings > View Downloads and then download all of the NES games.

What are people on about? There are no filters on these roms. The nes games are running on their native resolution.

The resolution on NES was 256x240, and the 3DS upper screen is effectively 400x240, so in theory they should have been able to use the NES output and fit the 3DS screen perfectly (with borders on the sides). But I'm no expert on these things.

I'm stupid, your right.

EDIT - Fixed mistakes.

Whee, I ran down to McDonalds for lunch so I didn't have to drive all the way home. I now have all of my free games. I even had time to run through the first Dungeon in Zelda. It's amazing how much of that game I have memorized still and I haven't actually played it in years.

I even used my old trick on the first boss and blew him up with a bomb. Stupid dragon and his dieing easily to bombs.

Isn't the 400x240 3DS resolution only for games running in 3D?
No it's 800 x 240 in 3D (due to the double image needed to display the 3D image). 2D is 400 x 240.

Amazing, a chance to download old NES games. Nintendo is really turning over a new leaf. This is worth the extra $80. For crying out loud, I'd have paid one HUNDRED and 80 dollars for the chance to play Ice Climber.

Thank you, Nintendo!

You didn't have to buy the 3DS.

Not happy with the lack of emulation options on this rushed NES emulator for 3DS.

As you know, when you press Select + Start when launching a GB or GBC Virtual Console game, you can get a 1:1 resolution, with a GB/GBC console border.

With this ones, you just get the AWFUL FILTER version of the games.

let me show you an example, this is SMB on my 3DS

YES, it looks like SHIT.

This is how it should look with a 1:1 resolution

Just like ANY other game on the eShop.

Hope this gets fixed soon :(

lol. Didn't they specifically say that the Ambassadors' free versions would be upgraded for free to the updated versions as soon as they're released? I'd think this would be addressed for the full release.

AndyMoogle said:
No, that's the actual resolution of the screen.

Ah, I was confused by Wikipedia

Wikipedia said:
800 × 240 px (effectively 400 × 240 WQVGA per eye)

I assumed that when 3D was off the full 800 was available.

Regardless, the NES output should fit perfectly on the screen, unless they are scaling it to avoid problems with the overscan zones which showed weird artifacts in some games.

I'm actually kind of intimidated to tackle the original Metroid. I rented it for a short while from Blockbuster back when I was a kid, and my mind wasn't yet ready for its vastness. I never got very far lol

I logged onto the shop before the date but never got any kind of note that I was an ambassador, did you all?

I guess I'll find out for sure when I get home.

Except that blowing into NES games actually causes more damage to them than it does fixing anything.
But everyone thought it helped which makes it a fun thing to add to the 3DS if they make a NES app.

Let me know when you start so we can do this together.

So romantic.

A true ambassador doesn't need a note to know that he's an ambassador.

I think everyone got a note. Maybe you have the notification setting turned off.

Doubling the nes resolution would not be practical even with a filter (double the resolution is (512 x 480 which the 3DS won't support). If they simply just doubled it horizontally it still wouldn't fit the screen. What they have now is best and most crisp looking choice for the nes games.

Exactly, Nintendo could perfectly fit their games on their top screen, they even could put them on their touch screen which resolution is 320 x 240 (perfect for Genesis or SNES)

But they didn't just like this picture shows, the games doesnt fill the screen.

They didn't gave us the option (like they did with their other GB/GBC Virtual Console releases) to have them on 1:1 resolution, they just used some of those lousy filters.

Come on guys, even a NES emulator on PSP has 1:1 resolution option.

Didnt get it either and notifications are on.

So I was sort of bummed with the selection of NES games outside of the standard Mario/Metroid/Zelda fare, but Yoshi and golf are surprisingly great, and the lack of Punch-Out hopefully means it's getting the 3D Classics treatment. Despite all this, no Kirby's Adventure still hurts my heart

Why would you use Brightness 3 if you're always at home with it.

Because people tethered to the base is not enjoyable. Plus I've managed to drain the battery all the way down on brightness 3 before.

Hmm, I hope I got in because I made a point to log into the 3DS store a week before the due date just to be sure...

If they filled the screen it would not be 1:1. They would have to make a filter just to fix the stretch from filling the screen horizontally.

People are making a big deal about the resolution when these aren't even the final versions. Wait until the actual finished product is done since they could very well be planning to offer resolution options like they do with the offer VC games.

I just have the base right here next to the PC, so I leave it there whenever I'm not using it. It's a fantastic habit.

They left A & B as the buttons...GODDAMNIT.

Make Y B and B A.

Uncomfortable shit.
I should have figured. They did this on the DS as well, and it drove me buggy. Seriously Nintendo, is it that fucking hard to include a button toggle? This ruined the Gamecube version of Mega Man Collection as well. Such a stupid oversight.

I think he means vertically filled. And if so, he's wrong. It's using the full vertical space.

The problem with 1:1 for NES games is that the aspect ratio is incorrect. 256x224 is narrower than 4:3. When played on original hardware, the images display across the entire screen in a proper 4:3 format. If you use an emulator and display the games using the same pixel size (1:1 pixel mode) as a resolution using square pixels, you end up with a narrow image that looks incorrect.

For that reason, I do not enjoy 1:1 pixel mapping for NES and SNES games. The 3DS properly displays these games in 4:3.

Nobody's suggesting they fill the screen horizontally.
