4K market isn't big enough to carry a new generation of consoles yet so Microsoft & Sony's best bet is to be disruptive (Nintendo level of disruptive)

The gaming market hasn't changed over the last 8 or 9 generations, graphics have always been the big push.

Yes a good gimmick can help a console (such as the switch or wii) but a gimmick can also hurt a console such as the xbox one.

People want to look at a console and say "Look at the graphics it can do!" when your seeing an argument between fanboys the first things they go to are exclusives and graphics.

4K is the next step, well stable 4K at 60FPS, beyond that will be an aim for 8K. ( which we won't see for a long time...) Graphics are always at the forefront of any gamers minds, even if they claim they don't really care...

To be fair, PS4 Pro doesn’t support true and native 4K. It’s just this checkerboard fake 4K.

Xbox one X on the other hand supports true native 4K, e.g. RDR2 runs native 4K only ok Xbox one X.
It does support true, native 4K and checkerboard. So does the Xbox One X. The Pro doesn't support true, native 4K as often as Xbox One X, but seeing the power difference tells the story. The real question is does the end user experience change? Not really.

There's plenty of One X titles that aren't true, native 4K.

Convenience, portability (even if that takes the form of streaming/Remote Play'ing to your chosen device), and UI performance will end up mattering a lot more than raw power in the next generation. The smartest decision would be to ape Nintendo's hybrid idea, just make it more powerful.

Consider who the mass-market audience is. The hardcore power-hungry gamers will be in the minority this upcoming gen. Smartphone customers will be the ones determining which console wins the day.

This.

Gaming is the only market still dominated by the 'power' paradigm. Music, books, movies and computing, have all moved towards ubiquity and sacrificed elements of quality to do it.

I agree the Switch model is the most forward thinking, and whoever can get the least cumbersome streaming solution to a portable scheme is getting a slice of the growing pie.

Sony has the in-road with Remote Play, but it needs to be seamless, robust, and dick-simple.

That’s not true for everybody. I personally care faaaar more about art direction in games rather high tech graphics.

Not true at all. The X only released in late 2017 it wouldn't have time to sell 10 million by now, but from all accounts it's likely over half that. And it's gotten MS a lot of attention. So I think people are ready for proper 4K consoles, especially since down-sampling on non-4K screens still looks better than native 1080p/1440 otherwise, and of course the new machines power sill give the same graphical effect and lightning advantages regardless of res.

On paper, this will be a big jump, for the new chipsets with 7mn have come in and we are now able to get old AMD fury levels of graphics with more affordable chips. So we will be seeing a bigger leap then that with the new Xbox and PS5 custom chips.

Now whether this will work in practice is another thing. If we avoid a long cross-gen period like with the XBO/PS4, then yes, people are going to be wowed.

Honestly, 90hz-144hz is a bigger detail than 4k for normal games.

Ironically the most useful gaming application I've seen for 4k is the emulation of old games with CRT shaders. They actually need the resolution.

Yes. Even 60 fps is such a huge improvement, it makes me either laugh (when I'm in a good mood) or a bit sick in the stomach when I see the Pro & Xbox One X vying for console "supremacy" with either 4K or thereabouts 4K... & 30 fps or lower.

Take the latest Resident Evil 2 Remake for example: the console versions have fluctuating, uneven, stuttery framerates. It's just not smooth, no matter how many pixels there are. Yet the same game (even running with medium-tier textures) at 60 fps on PC is a far, far better experience.

It's time (IMO) for consoles to push 60 fps > resolution as a selling point. These are video games, i.e. not movies. When I'm controlling a character & camera, a smoother experience always = better.

People bought the PS2 just because it was better graphics. Sure they bought for Dvd's as well in the early days, but most bought for games ultimately.

But PS1 & PS2 was disruptive it was Sony coming from out of nowhere with gaming consoles that also catered to audiophiles & movie buffs , PS1 was focused on 3D games at a time when we was used to playing 2D Mario games ,

There are native 4K games for the PS4 Pro however, there are more on the 1X.
Both do checkerboard upscaling and most of the Pro/1X enhanced games have dynamic resolutions.

So portable gaming is more disruptive than VR or streaming? Yeah, sure.

Anyway, if you think the value of Sony and Microsoft is 4K, you are missing the point big time.

4K is here to stay, if people don't like resolution progress I wonder why they haven't stayed with their CRT TVs in the first place? Besides, it's not like you can't plug a 4K-capable console into your FullHD TV, it will work better than fine. The games is what matters, once new CoDs, FIFAs, GTAs, Assasins etc. will stop being delivered on current hardware, people will switch to newer consoles without even thinking twice.

You're comparing a new consoles with new games to an enhanced version of a then 4 year old console.

It is the definition of flawed comparison.

The fact the X is selling as well as it is shows the interest is there.

So you're saying that Nintendo being disruptive & not just making a more powerful upgrade to their 2012 console isn't fair to compare with MS making a more powerful upgrade to their 2013 console?

So we agree that being disruptive would be the better choice after releasing these 4K upgraded consoles?

They started releasing their sales figures again?
I know they were so abysmal that they stopped doing so a few years ago.
Correct me if I'm wrong but they're still not revealing that info.

Again false comparison. Come back after the actually made for 4K consoles come out. With 4K support from the start. Instead of a refresh that is still dependent on a 4 year old consoles architecture.

It would take more time than I have at the moment, but a cursory glance at TV shipment forecast and reports seems to indicate that manufacturers are already shipping a greater percentage of 4k TVs than 1080p. The percentage of 4k TVs shipped will only continue to rise until 1080p is only 10% or so.

Additionally, it's easy to see that Sony considers VR and PSNow their disruptive tech, and MS has GamePass and XCloud with Scarlett Streaming Stick coming up.

As always, it's exclusives that drive sales. Breath of the Wild is what made Switch a hit. Every person waiting outside for it, and the eventual 4 people I sold units to for $150 over msrp were after BOTW. From there, word of mouth and using it with family and friends does the rest. Just need a steady trickle of exclusives.

Leakers have been talking about the X's great sales for awhile, and NPD/MC/GFK data continues to validate that.

The only thing we don't have is exact total numbers, however the X is doing great and even MS has talked about its success several times.

I'm going to take a step further in your provocation and claim that the major reason graphics are the thing people most notice about games is because of how new interactive entertainment (brought about by the major human accomplishment of conquering electricity) is to us.

This generation has been all about bringing gaming to a wider audience. This will result in future generations that will appreciate and demand better games collectively because of the fact they will be collectively playing more games, period.

It's mind-fuckery for most of us hardcore gamers to believe that this perceived "watering down" of our medium is ultimately a good thing, because it will inevitably lead to a society that values and appreciates games more.

It's required and natural.

Microsoft, the company which brought us the X, which is „The most powerful and only true 4K machine“ said this? 😂🤣 wtf!?!?!

As long as the games perform well and look good on a 1080p screen the 4K market is a non-issue.

PS4 Pro 4 released in 2016 , Nintendo Switch released 2017 & Xbox One X released 2017

PS4 Pro / Xbox One X main selling point is that they are 4K versions of PS4 / Xbox One & I doubt if either one of them has sold 10 million units yet but Nintendo Switch can barely do 1080P when docked but Switch is somewhere around 28 million sold as of now & there is nothing standing in it's way or making it to 40 - 50 million by time the PS5 & Xbox Next come out. Also Xbox One S & Xbox One X both play 4K UHD Blu-rays but no one really care.

Next generation is the time to make a move like Nintendo made with the Wii & Switch because not enough people will care about 4K in 2020 the same way the none HD market was still bigger than the HD market in 2006.
OP what evidence do you have to support your argument or is this more subjective? Both the ps4 pro and xbox one x were purposely created for a niche market and never intended to blowout other consoles in sales. Not sure you can really compare what the Switch is doing in contrast to niche consoles specifically aimed at enthusiasts.

Also, the Switch is the first Nintendo console since the poorly handled wii u, so is it really a surprise that it is selling well? Nintendo has long since given up on trying to be the most powerful console, and that works for Nintendo. On the other hand, it would be suicide for MS or Sony to do the same. My subjective opinion on the matter is that 4k is starting to take over pretty quickly. Any console that doesn't offer HDR moving forward is only going to handicap itself big time. Anecdotally, I think a lot of people buy an xbox one s or one x because it acts as a 4k blu ray player. Microsoft, especially, would be really stupid to just toss that out the window.

You say it's time to make a move like Nintendo. What would Sony or Microsoft do to make a similar move? If you think giving up on 4k is the answer I'll kindly disagree. HDR is what is making 4k shine and that will only improve next gen. And don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo, but I don't think Sony nor MS can approach games the same way.

Imo, this narrative is flawed from the outset - If you don't have 4K you don't miss out on all the benefits of the new generation. In my consideration, you'd get most of them, plus hopefully standardized downsampling for 1080p. There's still improvements in graphics, visual quality, and game world size and simulation to be made by the increases in hardware performance. All you miss is a bit of extra sharpness and HDR.

A PS4 on a 720p TV still looks worlds better than any prior generation console, even without the downsampling aspect.

PS2 & Wii slapped Xbox 360 & PS3 around for years & PS4 & Switch will do the same thing to PS5 & Xbox Next if they try to sell off of 4K visuals alone

I have to agree. Not many people have bothered to upgrade to 4K TV's as of yet, as most people already own 1080p HDTV's.

Like Blu-Ray in comparison to DVD's, 4K has a very slow adoption rate, despite those TV's being cheaper now.

And going off of history, power has rarely won a console or handheld war. It's good advertising, good prices, & a excellent gaming library that sells platforms.

VR was more interesting and game changing than upgrading my PS4 to a 4K version. Yes I'm aware I can use the PSVR on the PS4 Pro but I'm talking about gimmicks to wow people.

Pro's not a 4k version of the PS4, don't know where you got that from. faux K maybe, but certainly not 4K.

4K is the standard as of right now in TV and has been for over a year, so i fail to understand your logic at all.

not true at all, very rarely does a Pro hit native 4k if at all when compared to an X.
4k is the standard? All cable networks broadcast in 720p or 1080i. Netflix 4k looks like an upscaled decent 2k blu ray at BEST. Oftentimes they look significantly worse. Tell me again that 4k is the "standard". Please tell me more of your sweet lies. And I still buy physical blu rays due to the quality difference in picture and sound. That and they can't be taken away from me because a streaming service didn't renew it.

Comon O onQ123 you know better. A next gen is much more than a rez bump
People played their PS2 games on the same TVs they played their PS1 games. Same for PS3 and PS4.

Next gen games are much more than a Rez bump, even the base PS4 could run games at 4k if downgraded enough.

4K TVs are getting to be the standard. A 1080p TV these days is probably going to be $150 or less and you won't find a large one anymore, they're all 4K. And the cheaper 4ks are like $250 for 43"

Of course, the problem is there's very little 4k content. TV is only 720p or 1080i. Streaming?

4K is just resolution..?
Imo 10bit HDR is the bigger deal.
But neither are selling points to the masses who buy old consoles at $299.
That said, PS4 is at what, nearing 100million units, not bad at all.

The PS4 and Xbox portion of the market is not the same as a handheld. And is what? At 130 million worldwide at this point? That’s not including pc. This demographic has been the driving force in gaming for a long, long time and has always stayed very close to modern display and the progress of gaming hardware capabilities. This is still very much the largest chunk of the gamer population.

The switch is not a home console. It cannot compete as a home console. It continues what Nintendo has always made the most money with... handheld gaming. If viewed as home console it seems only a slight improvement over the PS3/360/wiiu gen. It doesn’t appeal to those same consumersz

People tout the Wii... but once the Wii showed its age... and that was relatively quick... it cratered and destroyed the Nintendo brand for a bit with their next hardware release. I’m not a fan of current Nintendo much but the switch being a handheld you can play on tv is the best place for Nintendo but not for the rest of the industry.

PS4 is on track to reach 100M consoles sold this year and will end selling some dozens of millions more. If PS5 follows the same steps and strategy than PS4 will continue dominating the market another generation.

XBO sold like half of that because of their own mistakes and none of them is being focused on horsepower. They fixed most of them and are on track to fix other ones so next gen will do a better job.

Nintendo merged their home console and handheld into a same device mostly because these 2 markets were shrinking for them generation after generation (with Wii/DS as great exception and success). Now focusing their marketing and devs in a single device and with no competition on the portable side and many different games than the others (Nintendo games instead of some big AAA) they should do a better job with Switch sales than WiiU+3DS combined, let's wait if it's the case, and if they can reach PS4 numbers on their 6th FY.

Regarding 4K, 4K tvs start to be popular and once next gen consoles will be released in late 2020 they will be the standard and native 4K is going to be what players will expect for these consoles so they will have it. And I'm pretty sure they'll even support checkerboard 8K upscale.

If PS4 Pro had Ryzen1700 you would see most of normal games running @ 60fps in 1080p not just selected few.
Without any downgrade to graphics too.

Need High resolutions for big screens...only pc gamers play with smaller screens...never wathced a dvd on a 40" fhd screen? Is the same quality of a blu ray disc?
