One unit purchased every second, says Nintendo

Following the launch of the Wii across Europe at midnight last night, Nintendo UK has reported that 50,000 units of the console were sold in just 12 hours.

That equates to one sale every second, according to Nintendo - much to the satisfaction of UK boss David Yarnton.

"We are delighted with the amazing response to Wii and that people of all ages and gaming experience are embracing the way that we are turning the industry on its head," he commented.

"With so many units sold it is great to see that people will be enjoying Wii with their families this Christmas."

The official launch took place at HMV's flagship Oxford Street store, where 17 year old Londoner Marwan Elgamal became the first British gamer to pick up a Wii. Other shops opening at midnight included the GAME store down the road, which saw even longer queues and also sold all of its stock.

CEO Lisa Morgan told GamesIndustry.biz that the retailer was expecting more deliveries next week, but that nothing had been confirmed as yet.

"We are doing everything we can do to meet demand throughout Christmas and the New Year period," Yarnton said.

And no, the UK does not equal europe.

:lol I know, the threads are getting ridiculous huh?
yeah reporting new news is rediculous lawl. anyway this is very good news for Nintendo what are they close to 2mil now? Correct me if I'm wrong but still good news :)

Hmm. I honestly expected more - Microsoft launched in the UK with 50,000 consoles last year and that was considered a shortage. With fewer systems sold in the US than Nintendo sold Gamecubes, and now this, is it possible Nintendo is having some kind of manufacturing issue as well? I though with the older tech they would be able to put out insane volumes for the holidays.

I'm not saying the thread isn't justified (hey, I make some of the worst threads around here), I'm just saying there are a lot of Wii threads.

:lol @ my avatar change!

i think you guys are missing this part:

"50,000 units of the console were sold in just 12 hours"

I'd say that's a lot.

On top of that, it says 'Following the launch of the Wii across Europe at midnight last night' which I assume means that these 12 hrs were until 12pm this afternoon.

Is 50k a lot in the Uk?

I think I remember reading that the DS had the biggest launch week ever at like 90k (360 managed to break that with just over 100k). I'm sure it's a supply issue either way.. our poor Suerte couldnt get one over in Scotland.

remember guys, the UK hates Nintendo like Japan hates microsoft...well not as much.

thing with the wii is that this is selling to the fanboys right now...once they have theirs, grandpa and ma are gonna get theirs as well as Mandy the slut down the road.

Given that there are apparantly no spare consoles for anything but pre-orders before christmas in the UK,ther will be no casual sales here.

Completely sold out everywhere as far as I can tell. It's strange, some retailers got less than promised whereas amazon opened up orders again today because they had received extra. Got mines ordered from a catalog with zelda for ÂŁ175, coming next week.

Actually 50,000 is too little!!!

Something happened to Nintendo's shipment because the UK has received less Wii's than they supposed to have received for launch day. There are MANY MANY MANY people that are from the UK whom couldn't purchase a Wii because of this. Gosh, I know several people who were trying to purchase 2 Wii's. 50,000 is not a number to be truly proud of as Nintendo could have sold 3-4 times as much within a few hours from launch.

It's Wii crazy at the moment here in the UK and there are not enough stock delivered for people to purchase without thinking twice!

looks like i wont be gettin one :(
its probably good in the long run, finance wise, ill just get zelda on the 15th fo my cube, cant wait, first game ill have bought since resi 4 :P

Next week Nintendo is sending twice the ammount that we had on launch day here in holland.

How much did you get on launch day (isn't that today)?
It was sold out yesterday...

Well Nintendo promised 10.000 units, but reports indicate that it wasn't even half that number. Some store's here were selling Spanish Wii's, the remaints of that shipment and a new shipment will be sent next week, if not... well lets just say that Retailers aren't happy with Nintendo at the moment...

I know. Some store here in Central London (West End) didn't even get any stock. Many retailers are upset. Truthfully, this launch has almost became a PS3 launch minus the violence.

I call out every one of you

Nintendo for your shameful lack of Wii when JPN and US got more

MS for your lack of HD-DVD when the US has spare

Sony for not even making it to the table

STOP MESSING US ABOUT!

EUROPE MATTERS!

I would usually agree, but considering the alternative was to delay the launch till March (which I fully expected, given Nintendo's history), I'd say we got off lightly for once.

From what I heard, there were around 40,000 Wii consoles sold in Germany today (meaning the day 1 shipment is practically sold out).

As much as I agree with you, I for one am glad to finally have something less than half a year after everyone else does!

Yeah, its definately better this way for us, despite people struggling to get one before christmas at least we don't have to wait until spring 2007 or later.

Very true. I was third in a preorder list of 10 allocated Wiis or so at a local game store, and they only got in 2 consoles. The rest are coming on Tuesday or Thursday though.

At least it's not as much of a ****up as Amazon's/Play's 360 launch fiasco, where they sent the 360s to the wrong distribution centre, so all the guys who had preordered in say, August, didn't get theirs, but if you ordered just two days before launch you got one.

I was in a store yesterday where thay had about 40 Wiis on the shelf, and that's after they sold all the preordered ones. I was really surprised.

But that's in Switzerland, so you guys are out of luck....

Would you believe that Amazon did it again with the HD-DVD drive. Ordered in october, december 3rd they mail us and tell us that we won`t be getting one. People who ordered with express delivery got priority, no matter when they ordered.

I am quite sure every single Wii that is shipped to Europe will be sold right away, the question is how long will this situation sustain? Will sales slow down in January/February? Will Nintendo be able to avoid a software drought? Will Zelda be able to pull Wii well into Summer 2007?
