Now, I know the OP said no books you've already read but does negate rereads? I often go back and reread my favourite books. I've read IT by Stephen Kings over 30 times... and I'm looking forward to reading it again soon.

Reserved for future updates.

I think the point is to be reading and watching 50 new books and movies. Things you haven't read or seen before. You're the one updating your stats over the year though. I suppose you could include them if you felt so inclined. I doubt anyone else would be able to call you on it.

I don't re-read too much so it's not a problem for me. Plus with so many books in my to-read list I don't want to go over old ground when I could be trying out something new. It just piles up.

Feel free to reread books, you just can't count them towards your 50. This is important; one of the main points here is to read new books, watch new movies. Not just recapitulate things you've done many times before.

How about books you never finished? I think those can be counted as new

I commute daily for an hour or so each way. If I spend a chunk of that reading, I ought be able to do this - plus it will beat aimlessly staring out of the window, or sending pointless text messages.

I just realized that I'm not much of a movie watcher and I'm much more likely to read 100 books than watch 50 movies.

I'll try though.

I'm in, starting with S.

SuperEpicMan - 1/50 Books 10/50 Movies

Books

  • S. by Doug Dorst and JJ Abrams. - 4 Stars.

Movies

  • American Hustle - 5 Stars, it's awesome and funny.
  • Bernie - 3 1/2 Stars, Jack Black is really good in this, but I felt it fell short of being a really memorable movie.
  • Sherlock: The Empty Hearse - 3 1/2 Stars. Liked the episode, but the plot was a bit sloppy.
  • Sherlock: The Sign of Three - 3 Stars. I actually quite liked this episode, but felt it strayed a bit far from what makes Sherlock, Sherlock.
  • American Mary - 3 1/2 Stars. Pretty good movie which I can see becoming a bit of a cult movie in time.
  • The Last Stand - 3 1/2 Stars
  • Elysium - 3 Stars. Good but not very memorable.
  • VHS 2 - 3 1/2 Stars
  • 12 Years A Slave - 4 1/2 Stars.
  • Cloud Atlas - 2 Stars. Pretty sloppy movie, the only period I was particularly invested in was the guy helping the composer. Also, who the hell decided to make the actors look korean.

So how would anthologies work?

If all the texts are by one author and at least 100 pages are read, then count it? -- Fair criteria?

First time I notice this challenge and I like it! :)
I better get some shorter books though. My "To read" pile counts an average of 600 pages per book. That's more than 80 pages a day (if I want to finish one book per week). That's sure some task. Still, I'm gonna try to keep up and gonna update this post accordingly on 01.01.

Well, going to try this again. I failed on both counts this year, so at the very least I'd like to beat those totals.

I used to read a lot but I became lazy and this seems like a perfect opportunity to start me up reading again. One question though, I have a few books I've started reading but never finished them, so if I would start to read them from the beginning would that count or not?

Yes, I'd definitely count those.

For what it is worth, I read more in 2013 than I have in the last 3 years and I thank the challenge for that! I just need to allocate more time per day to reading... (fewer video games dammit!)

That's worth a lot. Congratulations and glad to have you on board.

How about books you never finished? I think those can be counted as new

Sure, start them over and finish then.

I like the headers from the official site, but I'll throw some together in January as well and you're welcome to use them if you want, Tragic.

Excellent, thanks!

[Original Text]: I was not sure if I should participate again 2014 - this year was kind of stressful concerning the book part. And since I plan to reread some books, I'm really not sure if I can complete this challenge again. But it was really fun and interesting to see what other people are reading, so I'm in :)

Update [March]: I finally decided to count longer books (600+) as two. I know I could just read some books with 200-300 pages in between, but I prefer to choose the books not because of the amount of pages, but because they sound interesting to me. Last year this challenge led to me reading mostly thinner books, and I don't want to do this again :)

I'm in. I completed it unofficially this year. Watched 100+ new films and have read 51 books so far (trying to sneak in another before the new year).

Towards the end I started avoiding large books to make sure I reached my goal of 52 but I'll do whatever next year. (I wasn't always reading regularly so hopefully that strategy will be unnecessary)

You'd be surprised how many of us had the opposite problem!

Had this exact problem. 50 books is doable if I know what to read next, that's where I got caught last time, 50 movies could be really difficult. Planning will be the key, I'm working on a list now,

I kust bought the new kindle paperwhite because of this thread. what the fuck is wrong with me. Well, im going to rock the shit out of this thread. Going into an analog/digital reading way. I like the realpaper. But reading at night is just fucking ugly. Give me the light, kindle. And I always want to watch movies, but never make it. So this thread is for me. Count me in, my body is ready and my wallet is empty.

Has anyone else been queuing up books for the new year?

I'm itchin and ready to go

Yeah! I'm excited. I've got 9 books lined up on my nightstand and I'm resisting hard to jump in to some of them right now. There're over 20 more on my goodreads queued, too. Just picking one to buy or borrow after those initial 9 will probably be tough though, haha.
