I'll give this the old college try - along with duolingo for the new year. I'm through with the hardest semester I will have in college, so reading books will be a great way for me to stay sharp and become more goodwill hunting. Dinner parties, here I come! I will (fortunately) have access to one of the best and largest university library systems in the Big Ten so finding interesting material shouldn't be an issue.

I'm in! I've been stuck reading about 15 books a year for awhile but wanting to read more, so maybe a community challenge is what I need. Can't say I'll reach 50, but I'll see how long I can maintain 4 books a month. 50 movies should be less of a problem, but still a challenge.

I"ll give it a shot, I want to read more. I'm confident about the 50 movies, and I'll be happy with 25 books.

Can I scale it a little? >_> Real talk, I probably haven't read 10 books or watched 10 full movies in the past half-decade.

Essentially, yes. This is called the 50/50 Challenge, so to "win" you'd need to reach that threshold. Having said that, set whatever personal goal you want for yourself. To make my life easier in terms of tracking, stick to the standardized update format if possible.

----- Break, break -----

For people talking lists...HECK YEAH! For books, my backlog on Goodreads is surpassed only by my Steam one. It will realistically take me several years to clear it out, which is another reason I love this challenge. I'm tearing through my queue at a much faster rate than before. I'm also adding tons of books to it, which doesn't help! I think I'm in the 220+ range. For 2014, I plan to major in Alistair MacLean and possibly Ian Fleming. The former is my dad's all time favorite, so I want to see what the fuss is about.

For movies, I'm pretty haphazard and have trouble sitting down and regularly watching stuff. I saw one film in the theater all year. I'm usually far behind on new releases and just watch whatever catches my eye.

Fixed it.

I've always been a go hard or go home guy anyways. Let's go for it. Being out of the bottom 10% would still be a victory of sorts.

Hey thanks for bringing up Ian Fleming. I've been interested in his novels, but I never remember to look for him when I go browsing for books. I'm going to add some to my Goodreads list pronto. I hardly ever read spy/detective stories, so I think they'll be a good complement to the few Elmore Leonard books I'm planning to pick up soon.

My sister actually had Casino Royale and another, I think, but she lent them to a friend from Europe to read on his flight home and he never brought them back when he came back to the US. :p

Think I'm gonna take on this challenge. I got more than 50 books and 50 movies waiting to be read/seen anyway.

Books is the challenging one of course, being that I'm a bit of a neurotic reader that goes back and re-reads so it takes forever to get through a book.

I have two books that are less than half completed:

The Fellowship of the Ring - started reading it about a year ago and only got through the first few chapters, will try again from where I left off.

Assertive Discipline--New and Revised: Positive Behavior Management for Today's Classroom - started reading a few months ago as an assignment from the Vice Principal where I work (I'm a high school math teacher).

I'm gonna really try to focus on books the first few weeks and see how things go.

I'd like to try this out too! 50 books should not be a problem as I spend most of my free time reading, but I've never tried tracking how many new movies I watch, so it'll be interesting to see if I can hit 50 just by watching my usual or if I need to go out of my way. Husband and I do have the tendency to re-watch movies a lot so that probably doesn't help :0

Going to give it a try as well. Been wanting to get some more reading done, and I think this will be a good incentive.

- Marking this post for "current as of" status.

Okay, I *think* I have everyone who has signed up so far on my Excel tracker. 149 participants so far! I might be missing a few or have a couple of people on there who were noncommittal in their post. I'll try and get the master list up and running a bit later tonight or sometime tomorrow. It will be in alphabetical order, so take a look and make sure I'm not missing you or haven't added you by mistake. PM me and let me know so I can fix it.

Final update for the evening: I have the master list post up and running, and it should include the full participant list. Each name is linked to their tracking post. As new people join in this thread, I'll put them in the tracker and post.

One quick favor: I'm requesting that every participant find their name in the list and click the link to make sure it goes to the appropriate post. If everything is kosher, we're good to go. If you have an issue with your link, please shoot me an PM and I'll fix it. Also PM me if I missed you on the list or added you by mistake.

I was just saying I wanted to read more this year. Totally in.

FallbackPants - 3/50 books | 6/50 films

Books

1. The Fall of Hyperion ★★★★½. Really enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as the first half of the story, but still a fantastic book. The Endymions will be added to this list soon.
2. The Yiddish Policemen's Union ★★★★★. Loved it. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Great story, fantastically written. Goes from glib and sarcastic to heartbreaking in the turn of a page.
3. The Colour of Magic ★★½, I've been meaning to read Pratchett for ages so I'm glad I finally got around to this. Sadly I really didn't get into it. It took me ages to finish, and I didn't love it to be honest. I feel like there was a good set premise but lacking execution. Still I've heard the death and guard books are the best so I'll give them a crack sometime.
4. Neuromancer ★★★★. I really enjoyed this. I've been meaning to read it for a long time, but only just got to it. Its amazing how prescient about the internet, wearable tech etc it was considering it was written in 1983. But at times I felt like I didn't really know what was going on until someone spelled it out. Maybe I'm a moron though. Great book though and a really good story.

Films

1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smug ★★★
2. State of Play ★★★½, Been meaning to watch this for while. Really enjoyed it. Good journalist/political thrillers are too few and far between.
3. Pain and Gain ★★★, I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. The Rock was actually the best actor in it, and I don't mean that as an insult. Fun movie, some funny times and an absolutely crazy story. It inspired me to pick up the book its based on so I'll read that soon as well.
4. American Hustle ★★★★½, Really good movie. I did feel like it tried too hard to make it seem like it was portraying the real story (with the aftermath and everything) when it was, as admitted at the start of the film, just based on a true story. Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence are insanely good actors. Seriously. Amazing work from both of them. I'm still not sold on Bradley Cooper being a decent actor, but he was actually pretty solid in this. Top notch movie though, and the direction seemed to be quite a distinct nod to Scorsese as well.
5. Street Fighter ★★½, This is kind of cheating because I've seen it before, but not for like 10+ years so I'm counting it. This was more enjoyable than I was expecting. Totally stupid, but still pretty fun. Van Damme's "who wants to come with me" speech is great and the Godzilla fight between E Honda and Zangief was amazing.
6. Eastern Promises ★★★½, I think I wanted to like this movie more than I did. No doubt Viggo put in the performance of his career, but the movie didn't ha e me on the edge of my seat like I'd hoped. To be fair I did get distracted like four times. I did enjoy it, but I wanted to love it more
7. Wolf of Wall Street ★★★★★. Fantastic movie. Absolute insanity. I have no idea if it made me want to do a lot of drugs or put me off them for life. Its an amazing insight into a completely different world though. Sure the film doesn't talk about the victims, but to be fair its not a movie about the victims. It's about the complete craziness that was Wall Street at the time. I did come out of it not at all understanding what Belfort did that was illegal though. I'm sure its super complicated and would be boring to see as a movie, but I still felt in the dark there.

Update #1
Pretty average so far. A lot of good and bad films.
Biggest surprise thus far is Wreck it Ralph. Biggest Disappointment is Desolation of Smaug. Overall, The Hobbit Movies have been incredibly disappointing.
Making Very little progress with my books. So hard to get into.

Update #2
Didn't get as much as I could done now my Summer Holidays are nearly finished.
The Garden of words was an amazing visual fest. Liked the story as well. 12 years was pretty painful to watch.
Though American Hustle was really good acting wise. Story was a bit of a mess but damn that last polito scene was heart wrenching.
Robocop felt like an unnecessary reboot. Gary Oldman was pretty good but the various storylines in it just didn’t work very well.
House of flying daggers is still absolutely stunning to watch again.
Books are still not making progress. For FFC, like Jaime and Cercei's progression very much. The rest couldn't quite grab my interest.
I very much enjoyed Fatal lies and this is the only book of the series I could get into really easily.

Update #3
I found the Grand Budapest Hotel the greatest gem I've watched in a while that I was lucky to stumble across. Beautiful film. In terms of Comic Book movies go, Winter Solder was my favourite. ASM2 was weak, X-Men was nice but a lot of ideas that just never went anywhere. GOTG was enjoyable. Edge of Tomorrow was also one of my greatest surprises as I went in without much expectations. Horrible films will always be horrible like TMNT, Transformers. I don't even know why I even bothered. I wish there was a bit more on the Wind arises. Exploring more indepth of the development of the plane as I feel it did get a little sidetracked towards the end.

I'm definately in, even though I often don't have the time to read books since school work is in the way. Also, since I'm bad at reserving time for playing through all of the games I buy all the time, I'm also going to try to play through 50 games this year. Good luck to everyone participating, and may your cultural self be with you!

Although my personal goal is 135 movies and 35 books, I'll still aim for 50 books.

Master list updated with the latest arrivals. Once again, shoot me a PM if I've forgotten you or if the link under your name doesn't go to your tracking post.

I was looking over all the usual movie award show lists last night and there's a lot of stuff that interests me. Upstream Color is by far my most highly anticipated film, since it's the second film from Shane Carruth. His first movie was Primer, which stands as my favorite "hard" science fiction movie ever.

I am in as well :)

I liked Upstream Color alot. I overrate movies though and am admittedly not a very good critic. I just like watching them! One movie I really loved this year was Electrick Children. Maybe you would like that one. I'm planning on watching Primer in the new year.

Can I count a Visual Novel as a book? What about paths? Would each path count as a new book?

I had to look this up because I honestly didn't know what you were referencing. From what I understand, they're basically interactive video games with some choose your own adventure aspects and narration of the characters. You'll probably need to ask others in this thread more experienced on the genre, but I personally don't understand how they would count as a book.

What's the usual length of these games? How much reading is involved compared to a novel? How do they differ from a JRPG? I "played" and loved To the Moon last year (which I think might fall into this category), and wouldn't define it as a book.

Use your conscience, but remember you're aiming for 50 books. Even if you did think they would count, I'm not sure how you'd justify different branches when the framework is the same and the goal is to experience new media, not repeats.

Hadn't heard of that other movie. I'll add it to the queue. Thanks!

Hmm. I think the shortest I played was about 26 hours. Some can be 60+ hours. I'd say that Visual Novels often take a lot longer to read than a book does, and the word counts can be higher. They are games in that you have choices, sure but other than that it's not much different from a choose your own adventure book that has audio and music. It's not exactly the same as Telltales TWD and other games, there's no psychical controls or anything of the sort. It's very heavily focused on the story, and literature.

I need some book recommendations to get me started so if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it. I've already decided to read both 1984 and Brave New World because the premises interest me a lot and I loved Animal Farm. Can anyone recommend me any other books in this vein?

I also need general recommendations for books to read. I've basically never read any books. What are some classics you guys would consider must reads?

Not exactly in the same vein, but join us for the book club this month. I'd also recommend most of the books previously done for the book club as good reads (I'd exclude Atlas Shrugged, which is an interesting book just for political/cultural reasons, but probably not worth the time, and The Happiness Project, which I picked because the study of happiness interests me, but as it turned out it wasn't really about that).

Do you guys use anything to track movies? I use goodreads for books, which is easiest to sort by year. I hit 45 this year (padded a bit with a few graphic novels) so I might be able to do this, but movies is by far the harder one for me - I only watched 4 or 5 this year!. I got Netflix and Hulu working though so I might be able to do it!

Having completed the challenge for 2013, sign me up for 2014 :)
The biggest surprise for me was that I barely passed the line on books when I expected to make it with no problems, although I did read significantly less books in the latter part of the year. I also honestly never realised how many movies I actually watched before I started keeping track for this, so it was enlightening. And perhaps worrying. It should be interesting to see how the next year goes.
