I need some book recommendations to get me started so if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it. I've already decided to read both 1984 and Brave New World because the premises interest me a lot and I loved Animal Farm. Can anyone recommend me any other books in this vein?

I also need general recommendations for books to read. I've basically never read any books. What are some classics you guys would consider must reads?

Definitely Fahrenheit 451, from what I hear. I plan on reading that it. Check out some Philip K. Dick, too. The Main in the High Castle, A Scanner Darkly, and Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said might be up your alley.

As for classics, here are the ones that come to mind at this hour: The Stranger and The Plague by Camus, The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot (short and poetry, but it's the poetry that got me into poetry), Dracula, The Princess Bride by William Goldman (it damn well should be considered a classic), The White Rose by Inge Scholl (while it reads like one it is not a novel; it is a moving and informative book nonetheless). The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Hemingway (short story but published in a collection of his short stories so that's cool too), Slaughterhouse-Five by Vonnegut.

A lot of people seem to like The Log from the Sea of Cortez by Steinbeck...I felt extremely ambivalent about it while reading it, though.

I have a huge list of American lit classics that I plan on reading, and I was going to list them, but this has a lot of my picks on the first page so I may as well just direct you there. I've nearly only read only the short stories of half of those authors listed there, so I plan to read most of those that I haven't already. I might delve more into early American lit, but I could never really get into a lot of the 18th and early 19th century texts that I tried.

Not exactly in the same vein, but join us for the book club this month. I'd also recommend most of the books previously done for the book club as good reads (I'd exclude Atlas Shrugged, which is an interesting book just for political/cultural reasons, but probably not worth the time, and The Happiness Project, which I picked because the study of happiness interests me, but as it turned out it wasn't really about that).

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, now I've got a good backlog going. Especially that goodreads list has a lot of classics I've never read but have been interested in.

What's the stance on the BBC's "Sherlock"? It is a TV series, but the episodes are more like TV movies than, well, episodes of a TV series.

Do you guys use anything to track movies? I use goodreads for books, which is easiest to sort by year. I hit 45 this year (padded a bit with a few graphic novels) so I might be able to do this, but movies is by far the harder one for me - I only watched 4 or 5 this year!. I got Netflix and Hulu working though so I might be able to do it!

trakt.tv it has a plugin for XBMC that automatically tracks you're movies. You can make lists of your favourites and other types such as Action movies of 1997, etc too.

I'm in again. I've gotten lazy this last year, substituting comics for novels. I need something to get me back on the wagon, so here we go.

sure! I'm in this year!

Question: I drive a lot so I use audible, do those books count?

Do it. I have a 30 minute commute each way to and from work and I've grown to love the sync between Audible and my Kindle. I read at home, pick up where I left off on my drive, then read again in bed at night. It's pretty freaking sweet.

I've tried listening to Audible books when I'm doing other stuff like messing around on my computer, and it just doesn't work for me. I zone out and don't concentrate on the book enough to really grasp what's going on. For some reason, I don't have that problem at all while driving.

The important thing is that you don't always post the whole list. We did that this year and the single posts were just too long. Just write about your new books and movies and post a link to the one were you update your list. That's how I understood it :)

Bingo! By all means post about the latest book or movie you enjoyed/didn't like, as people will be interested in what you're checking out. If you want to include a link back to your master list, even better. That's my plan.

Sure I'll do it. I am not going to do ratings though
Jan 20th edit- I have school starting this week, so I'm not exactly confident that I am going to make the 50 books . I am still staying in this just to see how many books I actually do end up actually completing 100% in a whole year

I'll give this a shot. Somehow add I got older, I began reading less and less, despite loving it when I was younger. I'm thinking of "majoring" in both Haruki Murakami and Vonnegut, despite never reading any of their works before, on top of potentially getting involved in the book club.

Anyway...
HeavenSmiley's List [As of 01.24.13]:

Essay: As a Man Thinketh - James Allen ★★★★
Essay: On the Shortness of Life - Seneca ★★★½
Broken Dolls - James Carol ★★★ Way overrated. Nothing amazing
The One Skill: Letting Go - Leo Babauta ★★★ It's free so can't complain. Nothing new though. Pretty short
The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway ★★★½
Don't sweat the small stuff - ★★★★½
The Psychopath Test - Jon Ronson ★★★★½ Really interesting but jumps from point to point and doesn't go into enough detail
An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth - Chris Hadfield ★★★★½ Listened to it over a long period of time. It's a great adventure and it feels like I was part of it (lol)
The Elements of Style - Strunk & White ★★★★

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - ★★★★
Falling Down - ★★★★ Fun movie but holy crap the wife is dumb. Why not leave the house earlier? Why not go further when she did? Straight up stupid
The Raid 2 - ★★★★ I prefer the first one. This was good and had some amazing fights but the first one is a lot more fun and more rewatchable
22 Jump Street - ★★★★
A lonely place to die - ★★★★
City of God - ★★★★★
Blue Ruin - ★★★½
Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa - ★★★½
Now You See Me - ★½ Was fun but you think about it for 2 seconds and realise how dumb everything in this movie is. One of the stupidest things I've ever seen
Dawn of The Planet of The Apes - ★★★★
Carrie (New) - ★★★½
No One Lives - ★★★
Cabin Fever - ★★★½
You're Next - ★★½ First half is really dumb. Second half partially makes up for it.
Transformers 4 - ★ Just bad. So so boring.

A Company Man - ★★★★

The Firm - ★★★½ Good film but crappy over done music, slow moments and dodgy sound mixing
Gone Girl - ★★★★½ Great film. Fincher is easy my favorite director. Not his best though. Too over the top
Nightcrawler - ★★★★ It was a good film but was missing something. Just didn't pack a punch. Jake is awesome though
Interstellar - ★★★★★ Best film I've seen in a long long time. Some corny parts were off putting but I'm willing to look past that. Easily best of the year
The Naked Gun - ★★★★½ Surprisingly funny. Didn't laugh once with Airplane but I was regularly laughing here. Comedy movies rarely work for me so I'm happy I found this
The Naked Gun 2 - ★★★½ Not as funny as the first but still entertaining
The Imitation Game - ★★★★ Surprisingly good. I didn't know all of the story so it was great to see it
Amelie - ★★★½ Cute film but overrated
The Waterboy - ★★★½ Pretty funny
Escape Plan - ★★★★ I love prison break movies
The Babadook - ★★★★ Really creepy and some intense scenes
The Hobbit: BoTFA - ★★★½ Some cool fights and special effects. Best of the 3 films
Team America - ★★★★ Pretty funny
Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 - ★★★ Meh. Most boring of the series so far. Only one thing happened
The Terminal - ★★★★ Pretty awesome pleasant film
The Interview - ★★★½ Some funny bits but nothing amazing
The Grand Budapest Hotel - ★★★★★ Think this is my first Wes Anderson film. Loved it. Usually don't like mixes of drama/comedy but this did it brilliantly

Underlined the highlights for me.

Thought I would get my format set up (aka copied from another poster).

By FAR the best site to track movies is iCheckMovies. Not even close. Tried most of them and they all suck apart from this. One of my favorite sites. I'm using GoodReads for books.

I have a load of books already linked up.

This list I found on reddit seems pretty helpful too:

I saw that list and saved it, I am interested in quite a few from there, and a book that I could realistically finish in a day would make me feel awesome.

I am reading The Way of Kings now, and I think it may be the longest one I have, though ironically even though I am half way, I don't want it to end. It'll be tough waiting for 9 more of these.

I'm halfway through a long book (500 pages) and I'm probably going to count it as my first book of the year. It kinda feels like cheating but I can't figure out logistically how to finish the book without cutting into some of my 2014 time.

It was a made for TV movie about a mother that takes a tonic to reverse her age so she can try and stop her daughter from getting married.

I'm gonna be lucky to read 25 books. I already know I'm just gonna read the whole Harry Potter series off the bat. Friends tell me I need to read the books before I watch the movies.

I just ordered The City and the Stars and Enders Game as my first two books for next year. Hopefully they are as good as I imagine.

Oh man I am so in on this. Sadly I am in the last third of the book I am reading now before the new year so.....

Can I count a book that I started reading in 2013? - Maybe! If you are less than 50% finished with the book when the new year begins, count it. If you're over 50% done, but don't finish the book until the following year, you've entered reading purgatory and must read the entire Twilight series to restore your soul. Alternatively, you can follow your conscience on this one. Count it...or don't.

I bet they will be all out before the last book in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

I read Ender's Game before the movie came out and absolutely loved it. I found myself quite immersed in Ender's world.

By FAR the best site to track movies is iCheckMovies. Not even close. Tried most of them and they all suck apart from this. One of my favorite sites. I'm using GoodReads for books.

I signed up for this two days ago and it seems to fit the bill. I'm not sure it has the social/sharing element that Goodreads does.

I'm halfway through a long book (500 pages) and I'm probably going to count it as my first book of the year. It kinda feels like cheating but I can't figure out logistically how to finish the book without cutting into some of my 2014 time.

Not cheating, it has to count somewhere. Do it.

As someone who sat through all the Twilight films, you'd be getting off easily.

I bet they will be all out before the last book in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

Easily. Sanderson writes more in a year that Martin does in a decade.
