Game 1 - Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation - Nintendo Switch - Completed Jan 6th, 2021
I played this game last on Android, and I really enjoyed it despite it's flaws. I picked up the first three games when they released on the Switch a few years back, but I was really turned off by the graphics on the first two games. I decided to boot up the third game, and I'm glad I did! Fun gameplay, and surprisingly nice new shiny creature sprites. The graphics were bad in a few parts (characters, mostly) but overall it was a decent enough experience and a fun way to replay one of my favorite old NES games. I kinda wish they would make the Zenethian Trilogy for Switch as I'd really like to replay those in the same style without digging out my DS or relying on the Android version's fixed portrait mode. A great start to 2021!
Game 2 - Diablo - PC / GOG - Completed Jan 9th, 2021
I picked up the original Diablo on GOG a while back and decided to give it a go. Since I have an ultra-wide display, I went with the DevilutionX mod which allows ultra wide resolutions as well as controller support which was really neat! The game still holds up okay, but it's extremely dated in some aspects. The text-based menus are all a relic of a bygone era, but it was fun to relive in a modern resolution. It was also fun since the last time I played this (from a CD) it took for fuck all ever to change between levels whereas now it's almost instantaneous. Overall a fun trip down memory lane! I'm going to give Diablo II a shot next!
Game 3 - She Sees Red - Nintendo Switch - Completed Jan 10th, 2021
I love a good cheesy FMV game, and this one ticked all the boxes for me. I saw this was on sale for $3 and figured "why not?" Functionally I found it to be really similar to Night Shift or The Complex, in that it's essentially just a "choose your own adventure" type movie with multiple endings. Obviously, the game was originally done in Russian and dubbed into English which at first was somewhat distracting but after a while became quite natural. The story, though, was pretty well done and this had some really good cinematography too. I felt like my choices mattered, because I played through the game twice and got two different endings and a massive amount of variation. The main menu said 46/62 scenes so I didn't even see everything there was to see. I really liked the protagonist, a kind of femme fatale version of Sherlock Holmes. Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of FMV games! Oh, and boobs.
Game 4 - Magic the Gathering: Arena - PC / Epic - Completed Jan 13th, 2021
I started playing this over the Christmas break with my son, when I bought him and my daughter a few plainswalker decks that had digital codes in them. I've been playing about daily now, and I feel like I've pretty much exhausted my enjoyment of this game. It's... Magic. It's very similar to playing the real game, just online. Which was great except that I opened all the (free) packs, got all the cards I wanted, built the deck that I wanted using the current meta, and then it felt like a coin toss every time I started a match as to whether I would win or not. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. And that's okay and fair, but not terribly exciting. I know a new expansion is coming out later this month / early next month, and it looks alright I suppose, but I think I'm done with this version of Magic.
Game 5 - The Textorcist - PC / Epic - Completed Jan 16th, 2021
I guess this is the first Epic free game that I've played after more than a year of collecting them. The game looked pretty fun with cool cartoony pixel graphics and an interesting typing premise. I love typing games like Typing of the Dead and Epistory, so I thought I'd give this a go. This game is more of a typing / bullet hell game which I found to be a bit of a frustrating combination honestly. In truth, the game was a bit of a slog to get through - mostly because you have to time your typing between dodging enemy fire using the arrow keys. I felt like I could have played this just fine if I had a third hand. The game almost encourages you to type with a single hand while controlling your character with your right hand, which slowed things down even more. Overall a pretty disappointing game, I'm glad it was free.
Game 6 - Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage - PC / Retroachievements - Completed Jan 16th, 2021
LJN makes the worst games, and this one was also pretty bad although I've certainly played worse. Never having played this back in the day, I can't imagine why it was so popular. I guess the red cartridge really got to people, huh? This game was insanely difficult. Like, supremely difficult. You think you're all cool playing Dark Souls and shit? Nope, give Maximum Carnage a try without any cheat codes! I'll admit that I used a game genie cheat for unlimited lives, because honestly I think I died about three or four
hundred times. Literally hundreds of deaths on a game that normally gives you like... six total lives. Lots of enemies (just regular enemies) can one-shot you. In some ways, it's like they designed this game to be an arcade quarter stealing machine, except that I feel like they made another game at first and decided to put Spider-Man in it at the last minute. Best part of this game, easily, was the music.
Game 7 - Diablo II: Lords of Destruction - PC / Battle.net - Completed Jan 29th, 2021
It's been forever since I've played through Diablo II, and after finishing the first game earlier this month I decided to give this one a good go. While it's certainly an improvement on the first, I found it to be not quite as good as I remembered. Even though I was able to play in ultrawidescreen (which was awesome!) there are still a lot of aspects of this game that did not age well. I found that I had to cheese my skills a lot more often than should be required of a game like this, although I know some people think that's what makes it "hardcore". Overall though, I had fun with it and was sure to listen in on all the story bits and follow along - something I don't think I've done since the game first released! I think I actually prefer modern Diablo III to all of them so far.
Game 8 - The Medium - Xbox Series X - Completed Feb 7th, 2021
I really enjoyed this game, even though I wasn't sure if I would or not when I first started playing it. I've played a few other Bloober Team games, Layers of Fear which I really liked and Blair Witch that I enjoyed but didn't care for it enough to finish. Thankfully, this game was a lot better put together than Blair Witch and even threw in a few elements of Layers of Fear that I really liked. First off, the music was incredibly well done. The absolutely haunting melody and tunes carried the spooky uneasy vibe of this game throughout - top marks. The story was interesting and original. Lots of Silent Hill vibes, which I appreciated greatly. Voice acting - top notch. Kelly Burke did an amazing job, and I was surprised to see Troy Baker in the credits as well! Thank god for Game Pass, if it weren't for getting this game for free I likely would have skipped it - but knowing how much I liked it I definitely would have paid full price. Only downside is that it was a bit on the short side (for a full price game) at 8 hours, and not much replay value if you know how the story goes. But otherwise, it's a hell of a ride!
Game 9 - Bowser's Fury - Nintendo Switch - Completed Feb 13th, 2021
I picked this up on launch and my son and I played through Bowser's Fury in two sittings. While a bit on the short side with only like 9 different small levels, it did still take us about 7 hours to get 100% complete. I love the open-world Mario gimmick a lot, and there are tons of secrets and stuff that are part of this game that wouldn't really be possible with a linear (or even level based) Mario game. My only real complaint is that the game was incredibly easy with 2 players, as Bowser Jr. is invincible and can attack enemies and collect power-ups. The most difficult part really was just learning to work together with the different camera angles and such to find all the hidden goodies. Still though, a really enjoyable experience and a nice "addon" for Super Mario 3D World.
Game 10 - Gal*Gun Returns - Nintendo Switch - Completed Feb 14th, 2021
Another short game on the Switch, just in time for Valentine's Day. This game is.... weird? I played the original Gal*Gun a few years back on the Vita, and honestly it was almost completely identical to this one. There were a few different mini-games and such, but the basic plot was still intact: cupid angel shoots guy too many times, guy has to fend off chicks at school by giving them orgasms. You know, just a normal day in Japan right? In hindsight, $50 was probably an extremely high price point for this game as it felt like it would be more suited to $15 or maybe $20. Each scenario can be completed in about 3 hours, and there are only a total of six scenarios. I suppose the replayability is there, considering each scenario has multiple endings and each time you beat the game you can unlock new concept art and such using the "light feathers" you collect. A huge amount of the scenarios are the same though with only slight variations, so most normal people will probably get bored of this quickly. A fun romp, but maybe wait for a sale if you're planning on picking this up.
Game 11 - Far Cry 4: Valley of the Yeti - Xbox Series X - Completed Mar 5th, 2021
I wanted to try out Far Cry 4's new FPS boost on the Series X, and realized that I had never played this expansion / mini campaign so I thought I'd give it a go. I've been incredibly busy lately, so this Far Cry mini-adventure was just the ticket for me. Although it only took me a few hours to complete, I think I played it a bit here and there over about 6 play sessions. I liked it a lot (Far Cry 4 is still my favorite in the series) and the FPS boost was really impressive. Overall, an A+ experience for me.
Game 12 - Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends and the Secret Fairy - Nintendo Switch - Completed Mar 22nd, 2021
I've been playing this game for a couple of weeks now, stealing time between my busy work schedule lately. An hour here, an hour there... all culminated in me playing this game for nearly 40 hours. I know I probably could have done it a bit quicker than that, but I was trying to be thorough and do all the side quests and create all the alchemy items to 100% the game. I think I came pretty close to doing just about everything! It was great seeing the characters return (I loved the first game, my first Atelier game) and it was sad to see this one end. While not an epic tale by any means, a true "slice of life" RPG that tugs at the heartstrings. If you played, and enjoyed, the first game you owe it to yourself to give this one a try.
Game 13 - Konami Pixel Puzzle - Android - Completed Mar 22nd, 2021
I've been playing this since November, doing a quick nonogram here and there. The game was free (with minimal advertisements) so I figured "why not?". A fun picross game, with cool puzzles from Castlevania, Bomberman, and more - but all old games from the 80s and early 90s (no Metal Gear or Silent Hill, for example). Regular puzzles could be completed at any time, but "boss" puzzles had a three hour cool down - and about half of the puzzles were "boss" puzzles - which formed one big picture when it was entirely filled out. So while it's fun and all, it literally took me months of playing nearly every day to complete the entire collection. Hints (clearing one random row) were also time-gated to once every 10 minutes while playing. Not a terrible experience, but not something to pick up and play if you're serious about finishing it unless you've got a lot of patience.
Game 14 - Ratchet and Clank - PlayStation 5 - Completed Apr 24th, 2021
I wanted to play through Ratchet and Clank on the PS5 before playing through the new game that's coming out. It also got a 60fps patch, so I felt like it was the perfect time to jump back in. The last time I played this game, it was new! I will say, the 60fps gameplay was completely smooth and made the game much more enjoyable. The game itself is still great although obviously geared towards smaller kids. Really enjoyable, and a few of the bosses were actually kind of difficult. Overall, pretty enjoyable but ultimately forgettable.
Game 15 - Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition - PlayStation 5 - Competed Apr 25th, 2021
Now this game was incredible - full stop. My son and I have been playing through this in co-op for the past couple of weeks and have about 70 hours on the clock. There were bad times: like getting wiped out once and losing several hours on our save file (because we're idiots and rushed into a new area without saving) and there were great times: defeating incredibly hard bosses and generally being goofy in-game. The fact that this game has so many rigid systems yet allows you to be goofy and cheese things is an incredible accomplishment. For example, we basically used the same two merchants in the opening town throughout the entire game. Towards the end of the campaign, one night before turning in (and after saving!) he decided to just slaughter the merchant to see what would happen - and my PlayStation 5 froze for a good 10 seconds or so before massive amounts of loot (like, literally everything we had ever sold this merchant over the course of 70 hours) spewed out everywhere - good times and a good belly laugh from me! The characters were amazing, and I felt like even our generic humans had a good amount of personality by the end of it. Although it took a while to get a hang of the systems, this game was an absolute masterpiece. Play it.
Game 16 - Outriders - Xbox Series X - Completed May 15th, 2021
I started playing Outriders at launch, and have been kinda playing it off and on for the last few weeks. The game is fun, sure, but it's pretty monotonous and at times a bit boring. The loot combos are great, until you get to be higher level which means you're leveling up and changing out gear less often. I played the tank class, because I'm basically terrible at these types of games so I figured getting up in people's faces and shooting them would be the way to go. It worked out okay, but honestly this game felt like a B- at best. The story had a lot of promise, but immediately went to shit after the first hour or so. Game took me around 40 hours to complete. I'd probably only recommend this if you're a fan of Bulletstorm and are looking for something new, or just want to try a new TPS looter. Glad I got this on Game Pass.
Game 17 - HuniePop - PC GOG - Completed May 16th, 2021
I played this for the plot. It had a nice plot.
Game 18 - Monster Train: The Last Divinity - PC GOG - Completed May 17th, 2021
I've been playing a lot of Monster Train on and off since the game came out, so I decided to pick up the expansion. Turns out, the expansion is great and perhaps even better than I originally expected. The expansion adds a new faction (these crystal dudes) that have their own unique playstyle and mechanics. What's really cool, is that they integrate really well with the existing cards, so this really opens up a lot of fun possibilities in this deckbuilding game. The expansion also adds a new difficulty twist outside of battles, by letting you take on more risk during each run so that you can win additional rewards - and even fight a super hard hidden boss (which I still haven't got to let alone overcome). However, I've leveled up the new Wurmkin faction really high and won a few runs with them so that's probably where I'll leave this one, until the urge strikes me to play another quick run at some point as I continue playing this off and on.
Game 19 - Tetris Effect: Connected - Xbox Series X - Completed May 21st, 2021
I originally played this on the PS4 when it released, but I was sorely disappointed that it didn't have a multiplayer mode / split screen included. Now it has multiplayer included, and I finished the solo campaign levels. I'm such a weirdo sometimes. Anyway, the game was fantastic and a real spectacle. The music and visuals blend wonderfully and it's like making your own jams as you move the pieces. A real artful blend of something nostalgic (Tetris!) and blending it and new and interesting ways. I found that weed really helped my enjoyment of this game immensely, probably more so than any other game I've played while high.
Game 20 - Peggle - Xbox Series X - Completed May 24th, 2021
I popped into Peggle because it was on Game Pass. I haven't played this game in ages, and it still holds up really well. Lots of fun for what is essentially a cross between pinball and pachinko. Got the eye roll from the wife, because this is probably the least masculine game I've played in a long while. Game can still be really frustrating though, especially since all of the peg placements in each level are random so it sometimes just feels like chaos theory playing through everything. Definitely worth checking out (or checking out again if you haven't played it in a while).
Game 21 - Divinity: Original Sin 2 - PlayStation 5 - Completed Jun 7th, 2021
This game was... not as great as I was lead to believe originally. While it improved in a lot of ways over the first game, I felt like a lot of stuff
really suffered in this game vs the first one. The good: more solid characters (although their stories are completely disjointed), better quest log system, more quest variety. The bad: zones that lock you out (each "chapter" has it's own zone, and once finished you cannot go back), annoying puzzles that typically made no sense whatsoever, buggy physics system - especially when stairs were involved, buggy quest dialog that broke on more than one occasion for me, boring soundtrack, ending made no sense, and permadeath of party members randomly happens behind failed persuasion checks. I wouldn't say that I
disliked this game, but it's definitely not as good as the previous entry. A shame, really as I really liked the first one immensely.
Game 22 - Picross S3 - Nintendo Switch - Completed Jun 18th, 2021
It's been a while since I've played through a Picross game on the Switch and decided I'd keep marching in order through Jupiter's S series which has always been really great. This game was no exception - great and challenging puzzles that are completed to make completely random objects and items. The clip picross this time was themed around Alice in Wonderland which was pretty cool I suppose. The game was very "by the numbers" (if you'll pardon the pun!) but completely solid throughout. I've picked up S4 which I'll probably start plodding through soon.
Game 23 - Resident Evil 5 - Xbox Series X - Completed Jun 21st, 2021
I played through this game in co-op with my son. It took us about 8 hours to finish, but that included spending 45 minutes on the final boss
. Game was a lot of fun, but some of those boss fights (especially the last one) completely sapped almost all of the enjoyment from the game. The weapons were really good, and I'm convinced that the stun rod technically breaks the game. We didn't really care to find all the hidden treasures, but we got enough money to fully upgrade a few weapons which helped a lot. Inventory (as is always with these games) was a constant struggle, especially after buying both vest upgrades as we were constantly having to juggle things. I'd give this game a C overall, probably would have gotten an A without those damn obscure puzzle-combat-based boss fights.
Game 24 - State of Decay 2 - Xbox Series X / PC - Completed Jun 23rd, 2021
I played this game when it first released a few years ago, but found it incredibly frustrating to keep everyone in my base alive and happy enough to continue moving forward in progress instead of constantly backwards. The game got a 60fps Series X path and I decided to give it another go. I feel like the game has improved tremendously since it first released - it almost feels like an entirely different game. My favorite QoL upgrade was the difficulty sliders. At the beginning of the game I was able to set a scale of things like how many resources there were, how difficult zombies would be to kill, how many plague hearts would be on the map, etc. I set it to what I thought would be fair but challenging (and then didn't change it again after that). Having that kind of direct control over the experience - making it as frustrating as I wanted was a huge help. I finished the campaign as a sheriff, which had some fun role play elements as well such as rounding up several police cars for my base and getting a 10 gallon hat to dress my main character in. Game ran incredibly well on the Series X but halfway through I switched to PC for that sweet sweet ultrawide resolution.
Game 25 - A Short Hike - Nintendo Switch - Completed Jun 27th, 2021
I set out to play a short game, and I landed on... A Short Hike. The game was definitely charming with lots of cute pixel animals. The 3D environment was fun to explore and there was quite a bit to do. The objective is simply on the outside - climb from the bottom of the map up to the top of the peak. To do this, you need to collect golden feathers that are kind of like stamina wheels in Breath of the Wild. You're a bird, and you use the golden features to climb or jump higher. Along the way you collect various items to trade with the other animals in the park, usually for additional golden feathers. A really cute game that gets surprisingly dark if you look under the surface just a little bit.
Game 26 - Kamiko - Nintendo Switch - Completed Jun 27th, 2021
Another short game to help me get back on track for this challenge! I've had this one in my backlog for a couple of years and I'm not sure why exactly I haven't ever booted it up before. The game only took about an hour to complete, but it's a fun action puzzle game similar to the old top-down Zelda games. While it wasn't particularly challenging, there were a few parts that were tricky to figure out! The game had the Zelda-1-style "kill every enemy except one so they don't respawn" game mechanic that you have to use to solve some of the puzzles, because picking up a key or key-like item means you cannot attack, and if you get hit you drop it and have to start back from where you originally picked it up. The game has three different classes to choose from, mine had a bouncing ball weapon that you could throw at different angles to kill enemies. A fun game that's definitely worth the $5 asking price if you're into retro pixel art and music.
Game 27 - Resident Evil 6 - Xbox Series X - Completed July 15th, 2021
After finishing Resident Evil 5 in co-op, my son and I decided to tackle Resident Evil 6 next since it also has a co-op split screen mode. This game is absolutely the Michael Bay entry into the series - fun action set pieces with tons of explosions everywhere. Some cool interesting puzzles throughout, but missing the sense of urgency that Resident Evil 5 had. For example, ammo seemed to be everywhere and there were several times our inventories (which were massive) filled up will ammo. The story was fun and cheesy though, and we had a good time playing through it together.
Game 28 - Scarlet Nexus - PC Steam - Completed July 24th, 2021
This game is such a weird mixed bag. One one hand, it has excellent (maybe even amazing) characters and great character motivations. On the other hand, this game was far less of a game and more like a visual novel. The action sequences were broken up in such an odd way to parade out character exposition that would sometimes last over an hour of watching cutscenes. By the end of the game, these breaks in the main story that would focus more on the characters interacting with each other got longer and longer. However, the payoff at the end for all this character building was great! So while I found myself getting bored with this game pretty often, I also felt like it was a fun and worthwhile experience. In 25 hours, they not only got me to learn the names of the dozen or so main characters, but also got me to care about them. The main plot was surprisingly good as well.
Game 29 - Star Trek (2013) - PC Steam - Completed July 29th, 2021
I watched the 2009 Star Trek movie in 4K the other night, and said to my wife: "Remember the one right after this where they fight the Gorn but the Gorn are dinosaurs and kidnap the Vulcan scientist? No?" Turns out, I was thinking of this game! While notoriously buggy (and no longer available for sale digitally!) I actually really liked this game. Full voice cast of actors from the movies, big setpieces, not very long - about 6 hours - and a lot of fun for a third person action adventure cover shooter. Played flawlessly on my PC, the game was very technically competent for it's time. Supported ultrawidescreen resolution right out of the box without tinkering - something not all modern games even do. Ran at 200-550 fps unlocked on my PC which was awesome. A real technical showcase from nearly 10 years ago!
Game 30 - Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster - PC Steam - Completed July 30th, 2021
I was a bit on the fence at first about these pixel remasters, but after playing through the first game I'm really glad these got made. While the graphics don't quite look as good as the PSP version of the first two games (or 4), just about everything else is superior to that version. The re-orchestrated music is the phenomenal standout here, with every track lovingly recreated to sound amazing. The in-game music player is a good way to listen to all of these tracks any time too. The other QoL improvements are great such as the mini-map, sprinting, autobattle, and tons more. I can't wait to jump into the other games in the series.
Game 31 - Tales of Berseria - PC Steam - Completed July 30th, 2021
I started playing this back in April, and I've been slowly going through it a little bit at a time. After nearly 80 hours, I've finally finished this game - what a ride. I have to say, this game probably elicited more emotions in me than any other game has, possibly ever. The characters were all amazing and extremely well fleshed out. The banter between characters throughout was the real standout. There were times when I had literal tears in my eyes, but other times of genuine laughter. A truly amazing game that I'm glad I got to experience in my lifetime.
Game 32 - Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster - PC Steam - Completed Aug 9th, 2021
I've gotta say, this is my favorite version of Final Fantasy 2. Just like the first game in this remastered series, the music was easily the stand out quality of this game. While not every track is as iconic as the first game, there are some real gems in this one that stand out vividly. The theme of the final dungeon, for example, had a full choir going which was surprising and delightful. The character sprites in this game I actually preferred to the LEGO looking sprites of the PSP release. I used a custom font this time around (from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, originally) and it was a superb fit. Now I can't wait to dive into the third game as I haven't played it in 2D in decades.
Game 33 - Final Fantasy 3 Pixel Remaster - PC Steam - Completed Aug 12th, 2021
What an amazing old-school JRPG. I've played the NES original and the 3D remake, but I think this is now the best version of this game available. I liked it a lot, although my biggest complaint is that the difficulty seemed to be toned WAY down. For example, I believe in the original game you couldn't buy Phoenix Downs in shops, which made using the Raise (and Arise) spell strategically a lot more important - basically that shit was golden and saved for when the White Mage died. Probably because I kept stocking up on Phoenix Downs, I kept running out of money until about half way through the game. But then by the end of the game, I had so much money I was buying Shurikens in Eureka like they were on a fire sale. Either way, a great game that is made awesome through this re-release.
Game 34 - Piczle Cross Adventure - Nintendo Switch - Completed Aug 13th, 2021
I've been playing through this game for a few months on the Switch and I've really enjoyed it. The puzzles are great, and the pokemon-like graphics are also pretty good. There were a lot of "secrets" to be found, and I got 100% of the puzzles solved and in-game achievements unlocked. The story was pretty "meh", but passable. Now that I'm finished with this, I'll probably try taking on Murder by Numbers next, or possibly the new Picross S Megadrive collection. I love a good picross game, and this is one of them.
Game 35 - Doki Doki Literature Club Plus - Nintendo Switch - Completed Aug 18th, 2021
I went into this game (mostly) blind, and that's how I'd recommend playing this. I knew that there was some sort of psychological horror aspect to this game that was in direct competition with it's art style. But I started playing the game and for the first few hours it just felt like a regular ol' visual novel. And then, it wasn't. Not to give too many spoilers away, but I felt like this was an excellent experience. For $15, it was definitely worth playing.
Part 2 Here
