A strong majority of Americans say Democrats should look to cooperate with President Trump to strike deals, according to the inaugural Harvard-Harris poll provided exclusively by The Hill.

The survey found that 73 percent of voters want to see Democrats work with the president, against only 27 percent who said Democrats should resist Trump’s every move.

The findings are significant as Democratic leaders in Congress are under growing pressure by their liberal base to obstruct the president's agenda. The poll shows the party is divided on how to deal with Trump: 52 percent of Democrats polled say they should cooperate with him on areas of agreement and 48 percent saying they shouldn't.

Primary challenge me if old.

If he has a good idea or proposes traditionally progressive ideas (like infrastructure spending) I would hope they would vote country over party.

But I doubt he does much of that

On areas of agreement (however few there will be), democrats should work with Trump. There's going to be plenty of shit to fight about, so I don't think they'll be wanting with that. Working with Trump on common ground (when there is any) will show Democrats are reasonable, so when they go on the defense it'll be more meaningful.

When in the history of American politics have the opposition worked with the opposing party?

Nearly all of it? The majority of bills passed were with bipartisan support, even when the tea party nuts were in charge. Working with the opposition is the only way the american system of government can operate.

It would be nice if the government could work together instead of drive the wedge deeper and deeper.

So liberals watched Congress fuck with Obama at every possible turn, up to and including denying him his right as president to appoint a Supreme Court nominee... and yet based on this math, at least half of those same liberals want Democrats to 'work with' Trump.

Weakest of the losers joining the winning team to save face. Even most of the high powered Democrats are Democrats because they have no grasp on tangible power. Republicans control actual jobs, resources and a large population majority, so it's no surprise that the weaker democrats are shaking in their boots.

You don't get a number like 73% without getting a significant number of members of BOTH parties.

In other words, Democrat voters messing things up once again.

Those same people will blame the Democrats when they try to work with Trump/Republicans and get screwed.

Why is this surprising

"Work with" but doesn't specify what. I'm guessing most democrats who voted yes would expect them to work with him if it gets them what they want. Aka infrastructure spending and other things democrats would like that he said he'd do

I'd like to see Democrats work with Trump like Odin worked with Ymir.
I'll be really impressed if anyone understands this post without going to Google/Wikipedia.

I feel like the "on areas of agreement" qualifier is important here but that doesn't get as many clicks.

Fuck that. The last 8 years showed that Republicans have no interest in bipartisanship (hell, Merrick Garland's nomination alone is sufficient evidence) and any co-operation with them at this point will only serve to undermine Democratic support in 2018.

"You first" "No, YOU first!" "NO, YOU FIRST!"

Not saying they're not right to block Trump as the certainly are for most of this shit but just using "they did it too!" as an excuse is a lazy as hell way to make that argument.

Yup like the GOP under Obama. The one for an eye is typically a poor talking point but when your your faced with litterally the worse case scenario that doesn't give a shit about you. Then you've made your bed now lie in it.

Uh, this is just one poll, by a brand new polling group. I'd maybe wait for more polls asking the same questions before starting to freak out.

This is a non-story because you seem to have missed the operative phrase on issues of agreement.

How many issues are there where Democrats are in agreement with Trump, full-stop, much less the number they're being obstructionist on?

It's practically a dumb hypothetical. "If Trump tries to do something that's actually not horrible, should Democrats try to stop him anyway? Y/N"

Pretty much. Saying 'should resist every move' seems fairly extreme, especially for people that may not watch the news that often.

73% of voters polled maybe, but I'm questioning the expansion and application of those results.

The online survey of 2,148 registered voters was conducted between Feb. 11 and Feb. 13.

oh, well that's perfectly fine.

Well, the question wasn't as simple as "Should Democrats work with President Trump?"

It asked whether they should boycott every single thing his administration does or look to cooperate on the issues they support. I would argue that the article isn't exactly interpreting the poll correctly.

"73% say Democrats should look to cooperate with President Trump and his administration and make deals on the issues they support."

While we want to de-legitimize Trump and what he stands for at every turn, we can take opportunities to move things forward in areas of agreement. Maybe we can tap into some of Trump's pre-2008 NYC Democrat past to get some silver lining out of all this turmoil.

61% of the people involved in this survey weren't even Democrats.

Liberal identification in the US is about 25% of the population.

It's moderates.

Yeah and it could have happened under Obama, a man that gave it a go. It's not going to happen now that a fascist wanna be is in power, and it shouldn't.

Thank you for actually looking into this. People, when reading articles about statistics, make sure to read the details! This poll is shit.
