A Look at Japanese Game Sales on Steam - Oct 2016 edition [Steamspy figures]

This is a follow up to a thread I made about 5 months ago, examining the sales of Japanese games on Steam via Steamspy numbers.

I know that several people here are interested in the sales fates of Japanese games on PC for various reasons. While we often get threads based on the sales of a specific game or series of games, this thread (and the one before it) aim to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of ownership for both new and legacy Japanese titles.

If you want to look at sales growth (or lack thereof) for legacy titles, you can compare the numbers in this thread to those in my previous thread 5 months ago: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1223091

Provided that there is interest in this thread, I plan on doing another follow up in 3-4 months, after the various winter sales have wrapped up.

SOME NOTES:

1) All Steam numbers below reflect total owners on Steam, as reported by Steamspy on October 29, 2016. For those of you not familiar with Steamspy, keep the following in mind:

- These numbers are total owners on Steam and not sales through the Steam store specifically. Steamworks titles purchased on Amazon, Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, the Humble Store, at retail, through key sellers, in bundles, or as promotions with video cards or other hardware are included in the figures.

- The numbers are all approximate. If you go to steamspy.com you can see the confidence intervals for each title. Low selling titles (under 30k?) tend to be a less accurate than higher selling titles. Because numbers are approximate (but still quite close in most cases), I have rounded all figures to the nearest 1000.

- Steamspy has a lag of about 3 days. Games that were released within the past 2-3 weeks, or games that were heavily discounted over the weekend are most likely to be impacted.

2) I have listed games by publisher with an exception for Arc System Works (to keep their various series in one place). Series with more than 2 entries have been separated to make comparisons between entries easier. Otherwise publishers are listed alphabetically and games are listed in descending order of sales/owners.

I have tried to include all of the major and notable minor Japanese publishers/localization companies that I know of (the list below contains about 200 titles from over 25 pubs). If I have made any glaring omissions, post the numbers below and I will add them to the OP. I omitted a few series (like Pac Man) on purpose as they differ widely in target audience from most other titles listed.

With a couple of exceptions, I left the Japanese indie scene alone. I am not knowledgeable enough to pick out Japanese indie titles from the Western indie devs making the same stuff, and I don't really think there is a meaningful regional difference between indie devs.

3) Thanks to Sergey Galyonkin for creating and running steamspy.com for all of our benefits.

I'm glad the payoff of releasing Dark Souls in PC paid off to Bamco and From. And Dragon Ball and Naruto has sold well on PC too.

It is a shame TitS: SC hasn't even reached 50k. The Third Chapter will probably do worse, sadly.

Are they even translating the Third Chapter, looking at how SC ended up, I don't think we ever going to get it.

On other side, I have no idea why SNK didn't launch KOF14 for PC, 13 sold so well.

Do we have a way of measuring the legs of these titles? I mean looking at, say, Mushihime vs DoDonPachi, it seems reasonable to assume a big part of the gulf is just the difference in how long they've been out. A lot of these games, particularly the older and smaller ones, release to little fan fair.

If memory serves me right, they confirmed it will be released in 2017. That said, haven't heard anything else about this.

Seeing these numbers, it seems people like to buy Japanese fighting games.

We've known since the beginning of the year that they are working on it and it's set to come out sometime around the beginning of next year (aka expect summer/fall).

Yes, 3rd is coming next year. Zero and Azure, on the other hand...

Shame to see the my favorite Final Fantasy game is the worst selling.

Yes they are, and only the PC version so maybe it won't drop as much but I think they're just doing it because they have the chance and staff willing to.

Edit: Beaten by many lol.

Not only that but each entry in the XIII series beat out that nostalgia darling true Final Fantasy: FFIX. Despite it being something of an enhanced port. Haha

No wonder SE ignores it.

Those Xblaze sales are pretty sad. Didn't even know the second was on PC.

13 got past 8 do to hype. It was squares first big push of FF on PC that didn't have a PC out already. So a lot of people including me bought it as a show of good faith that we want more. Still surprising to see it beat 8, but 13 has been very cheap. Easily found for like 6 bucks.

While FF9 cheapest price has been 50% off on the square Enid store I think.

Good to see.

It needs to be a daily some day, I'm sure most new Steam users have no idea what Recettear is.

That's the head start they got from being basically the first indie Japanese game on Steam.

And The Last Remnant was the first high-profile JRPG of any kind on Steam for years. It's easy to imagine an alternate universe where any given game was in these games' places and ended up with similar numbers.

It would be harder to find Steamspy figures earlier than that without some google magic, but it gives you an idea of changes since the end of May. Like I said in the OP, I plan on doing a follow up every few months. Over time, I suppose these threads could help track legs for the titles covered.

I'm not sure if I should be more disappointed that Steins;Gate only has 14k owners on Steam or that 14,000 people willingly paid for that overpriced dogshit port.

Hatsuu will probably beg to work on the series regardless of sales and Varion is probably up to translate if XSEED is willing to contract for it.

And I wonder when GungHo is going to get another port out? I thought I remember them teasing another release but maybe I'm remembering wrong. I'd think Grandia II's sales would be good enough to justify more ports.

I guess they're not enough so far unfortunately? It seems to be a slow burn, maybe a few more sales will help since I don't think it's been below 50%. I hope they do get more of the series out or maybe Lunar 1 and 2.

Noticed on the list there are missing many visual novels like Clannad, Planetarian or Demon on the G String or Steins;Gate. Would seriously love to know how is the market of visual novels here in Occident.

Disgaea and Tales of Zestiria have done really well since then.

Zestiria got a huge discount down to $6 or so.

Would be interesting to see how the "fire sale" strategy works out across the Namco games. God Eater is at 50% right now so it could get a jump very soon.

I feel like Steins Gate missed its perfect storm release on PC. Players had the localized version of the console versions before it even hit steam. I think had it hit the same time the PS versions did the sales would be higher.

But yeah quality of the port could have hurt a bit too.

Zestiria got a huge discount down to $6 or so.

But I think that was only on the Namco store for one sale. So while probably a decent amount, numbers are still nice even if that's factored in.

The market kind of crashed this year due to how many bad titles have been flooded onto Steam. Few VNs can get more than a few thousand sales now. Titles will need to be profitable on narrow margins because soon Japan will realize that there's no point chasing Nekopara money.

just glancing at those numbers, seems variable. I'd be interested to hear from these companies what they expect with these titles and how they've reacted to their success (or lack there of) on the platform. Especially folks like Degica, Ghostlight, and even KT, who all have a variety in terms of game sales. Wonder if it's as unpredictable as it seems to me.

Some of these numbers are meaningless as they all either had huge discounts, launch day discounts, given free in a bundle, humble bundle , $1 dollar sales etc.

Dead or Alive went free to play. I am not bothering with F2P tracking for obvious reasons.

If people want me to track visual novels not already included in the OP, give me a list of titles. I ask that you stick to those originally published at retail (or by traditional publishers) in Japan. There are a billion indie visual novels on Steam.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round seems to be missing from your list. It sold around 128,702.

I didn't know NepNep's popularity in the west dropped that badly.

I wouldn't say it's popularity exactly when it comes to the mainline series at least, more that Megadimension requires a fairly decent computer to even run it. It also hasn't had a noteworthy sale yet, unlike the rest. Rebirth 1-3 were all Vita > PC ports, where as VII was PS4 > PC and Compile Heart didn't exactly optimize it well at all for PS4, which is why the port requires such insane specs for the type of game it is.

MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 7
Processor: Intel i5 2.3 GHz or comparable
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 or comparable
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 17 GB available space
Sound Card: Windows compatible sound card
Additional Notes: Shader v5 or newer

RECOMMENDED:
OS: Windows 10
Processor: Intel i5 3.3 GHz or comparable
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or comparable
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 17 GB available space
Sound Card: Windows compatible sound card
Additional Notes: Shader v5 or newer

There's not much point in tracking a wide swath of VNs because most of them are under 10k and thus in the range where Steamspy isn't giving you very accurate numbers.

The Neptunia games drop because the first couple were novelty buys, they got in earlyish on the Japanese push and they were good ports. Once that wore off, only the hardcore were left, and they've released like 7 games (+ 2 similar titles like Fairy Fencer) in 2 years.

What fills me with hope regarding TiTS The 3rd is that at least a good chunk of those who bought SC will get The 3rd, too. Once you're hooked, you're in forever :lol. I mean, I know they aren't exactly stellar sales, but could certainly be worse (those X-Blaze sale numbers, yikes!)

Search by publisher: MangaGamer and Sekai project. The most notorious ones are published by them. Maybe FrontWing, too?
