Okay, I have the Steam version now. It was compiled at 3am this morning... they really were burning the midnight oil to get this out on PC.

Diving into networking.

Edit: the thread title was changed due to an incident earlier in the thread. I was there. It's a thing.

You honestly expect me to trawl through this thread and quote every post I've seen that qualifies? Not gonna happen. No game, nor any internet discussion is worth that to me. But you knew that, thus are able to dismiss everything I say because I didn't go trawl through the entire thread to give 'data' and 'metrics'.
Exactly. No one will do that. Nothing is worth it.

Because there is no more of one than the other unless you actually measure it. And they could be a small minority for all we know / the same people who are repeatedly posting it. That's what's going on and this is where your argument fails yet you constantly repeat it that the majority of the population is spreading negativity when in fact we have been discussing points (back and forth, but still discussing) when you yourself aren't quite convinced of your own argument.

I just searched through your post history in this thread and you have just entered today. You have no idea what you're talking about. You were not here when this was just about two people not seeing each other. You were not here when this tacked on the controversy regarding the stickers. You entered this thread today, made a statement that has been repeated yet there is no proof of it. You are only assuming.

Seems like an awful lot of fuss over something that was never a selling point to the game. Did people really buy the game for the highly unlikely event they could possibly run into another person.
Well obviously every aspect of the game has different meaningulness to every consumer. You may not care at all about seeing someone else, whereas someone else might buy the game and make it their mission to find another player and see what they look like.

The real controversy is over why Hello Games hasn't answered the question "can you see other people" since launch.

"possible, but unlikely"
This right here is why we're having the discussion. Anybody blathering on about how this is a single playe focused game, multiplayer doesn't matter, etc etc is missing the point. Add to that the fact that the game is turning out to be a bit shallow after 10 or so hours and some kind of online interaction could totally redeem it. Here's hoping it's still possible and we just dot know details yet.

Fair enough. They should definitely let people know. That said, it felt like they stressed over and over again that wasn't the point or focus of the game. It was sold as a single player experience.

...while simultaneously dangling that, "..but it's POSSIBLE" carrot out there to stoke people's imaginations.

gossi, not to be rude, I just literally don't know:

Do you actually know what you're doing when it comes to capturing packets and analyzing them and such? As in, do you have a background in this? I know the tools to do it are easy to obtain and anyone can do it... actually knowing what it all means is another story, though.

Okay, I am running the game live on PC now with packet capture. Same as PS4, absolutely no data is transmitted or received on foot. Rebuilding hyperdrive etc.

I do it for a living. My job title is Security Architect.

How about when you name things? I assume something is transmitted then?

Wasn't an issue for who exactly? Speak for yourself. This thread is how many pages long? People were clearly looking for clarification.
you know im kidding, right? i have been posting about this as well looking to see what exactly is the element of MP that he spoke off on all those interviews.

Just making a joke about him not caring about anything else but issues... clearly MP not being there being a non existent issue. All pun intended on the non existent side of things.

ah ok sorry for being so snarky. The amount of defenders that i've seen before in regards to this makes it hard to tell who's being serious and whos joking.

i get it. i am also amazed at the lengths some people are going to defend the game. Whether its fun or not, some of these questions need answer. Not to mention the deplorable state on which the pc port is currently in.

Yeah, I very much expect you to do that if you make sweeping accusations in order to label a discussion as childish whining and call people "fucking arseholes".

People are taking into consideration that if the 'multiplayer' (whatever that means to NMS) is broken in some way, or has been stealth disabled in order to go live after late patch work, then there are going to be no packets to sniff, right?

If it were broken then the game would still be trying to connect online, just failing. And other online features wouldn't work.

Backing up claims is proving to be as easy as answering simple Y/N questions. Not at all, apparently.

Exactly. I know that you can meet with another person in this game because Sean told me you could and he doesn't seem like someone who would lie to me.

So, as long as there's an issue, there's an explanation. You just have to think.

Why can't I see someone when I'm standing in the same spot as them? Because they're invisible.

Why isn't Sean responding to the questions? Because he's busy baking cookies with his Mommy.

Why aren't there any signs of multiplayer in the PC version? Because it was stealth disabled for a few seconds and you just checked at the wrong time.

If you're not enjoying this game for what it is, you need to step aside and let the real gamers have their fun with Sean's vision. It's a perfect game. I've always heard that only God makes things perfect so... I think you can see where I'm going with this.

Yes. I also have a Palo-Alto firewall, which does hardware capture and SSL MiTM.

Of course, it is possible they disabled all multiplayer or some such. I'm doing some quick reversing of how the thing hangs together now on PC, it looks very similar to PS4. Going to the Options menu also pauses time and the game world on PC, by the way.

If it is taken into consideration, then say it.

Say that the feature is broken. Say that the feature will be in a future patch instead of keeping silent. Why must we have silence when that's all it takes?
Why has Hello Games / Sean not mentioned or is stealth disabling it? That's kinda suspicious and either way, their integrity is compromised.

What if the multiplayer unlock is at the center of the universe?! Mind blown.

Seriously, i'm pretty fucking positive that someone along the production said that finding someone in the game would be difficult, but it could happen, and if it did, it would be an emotional experience and the only way to actually see how your avatar looks.

I think launch may have just overstretched them (massively), to be honest. The NMS.exe file was compiled in the early hours of this morning, on the hostname of a desktop PC. It runs at barely 20fps on my PC (which is beefy, with a GTX 970 graphics card). It also crashed once already.

They're a small bunch of guys and I'm willing to give 'em the benefit of the doubt overall. 12 people have AAA number of eyes on 'em. I'd be terrified. This is what over stretched and over promising feels like.

That's cool. I'm not trying to be an ass; I'm legitimately interested to hear what you find.

It's worth pointing out though that just because going into Options pauses the game in when in its in, lets call it, an offline mode, doesn't mean to say it will work the same way if the online elements were working.

If it is taken into consideration, then say it.

I've no interest in getting into that debate. FWIW I agree with you.

I understand your point gossi but let's take a look before this PC launch.

Even if they didn't have time for this to compile the code in the PC launch, he still had time to tweet a few times. Those tweets were rather unclear about the feature. It could have been simple like I stated. All it would have taken is one tweet instead of the 6 vague ones.

But I agree, they're probably running on overtime and high on caffeine trying to fix issues. All I want to know is whether the feature is in and why they omitted the issue in their tweets when they did have time as he clearly had time to send out a few tweets these few days.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt, but my patience is starting to wane as the pc launch will delay the answer.

I'm pretty baffled they didn't do a closed beta for a few thousand people before launch. Seems like this is exactly the kind of game you want that for to sort out all issues.

I agree, but Sean's had a history of that for a while - no offense intended to Sean. He's really good at selling ideas, but sometimes presents ideas in a way which are open to interpretation. I mean, even the game (NMS) is like that, so maybe it's just how he functions, or wants to. I call it JJ Abrams'ing. JJ is very successful and has a lot of fans - and a lot of people who don't like how he delivers.

In fairness to him - both he and Hello Games did *try* to pre-empt this issue by tweeting 'no multiplayer' and writing 'no PVP multiplayer' on their website. I understand why people are pissed about that, because it happened super late, but clearly they realised 'Oh shit' later on. They started the train rolling with the 'play with friends' comments, and then could not deliver it. Personally I don't think that's a big deal but your milage may vary.

I'm pretty baffled they didn't do a closed beta for a few thousand people before launch. Seems like this is exactly the kind of game you want that for to sort out all issues.
Given the reviews, the user scores, the Steam scores... I wouldn't have beta'ed this from a business point of view. The game functions completely without server infrastructure if needed, you can even "upload" discoveries AND get the credits for them with a network cable removed, both on PC and PS4.

This would've definitely killed a lot of the hype when people actually figured out what it was.
But agreed, things might not have been like this, with all these issues

People still talking about capturing packets... Where is the search for the player model?!?! Has it been concluded yet?
