Any impressions on GKH?

I've been playing it a bit myself. The primary meat seems to be the online component where you participate in a conquest style campaign for your nation. Most of your offline stuff is for that. You raise knights and the like and there seems to be a story in the main quest as well. I may put off playing more for the English version though. It would give me a chance to catch up on other games.

Grand Knights History?? OH MY!!!! I was hoping this would eventually be announced but I did not expect it this quickly. I am definitely excited and XSEED you will once again have my money.

As far as Vanillaware goes I didn't especially enjoy Odin's Sphere (but loved the way it looked) but did like Muramasa. No, Muramasa certainly wasn't perfect but I thought the gameplay was fun and the subject matter was certainly something that was near and dear to my heart.

But seriously, we're actually getting GKH?? Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

More like do what you can to justify the localization and make money, which probably isn't flashy physical bundles at this point. The content matters far more than a bunch of nerd hoarders who want to stuff shit on a shelf. I'm thrilled we can even get this.

I was always under the impression that premium box sets for niche games like these are a way to make more money out of the sales... I'd prefer a physical release regardless if it's a "collector's edition" or not, I'm just not into DD/only all that much.

Well that's how japan makes money on niche content. Charge premium because the number of people who will buy is rather small but they will buy even if you charge them a ridiculous amount.

It's a PSP game. It's certainly not going to sell a lot of copies. So their best bet is to make as much money per copy as they can.

Princess Skittles

Prince's's 'Skittle's
Well this took a turn for the awesome.

I am deadly curious on how XSEED can keep supporting the PSP at retail at this point though.

Especially if something as wonderful a Half-Minute Hero fails when the PSP was actually (sort of) viable here.

My girlfriend and I were working on the anagram for fun last night, and with the clues she got Avalon and Union. She even wrote Logres for a second because "it seemed like it should be a word."

No interest in GKH, but glad something so nichey will come out nonetheless.

Hm, never heard of it. *goes to Google it*

Interesting premise with the online component and the visuals and music are certainly high quality. I wonder what the turnaround on the localization is going to be?

I haven't played it. I have been burned enough by Vanillaware's other games to stop trying them. None of them were enjoyable to me. And I was under the impression that most people don't really like them either, but they seem to get so excited about them nonetheless.
Yeah, in the past they've pretty much made bad beat-em-ups with wildly unfitting and disruptive gameplay mechanics like crafting systems and huge inventories and level/item grinding and whatnot.

But this is a turn-based RPG, where combat doesn't have to have a complex and responsive real-time moveset to be fun, and all those gameplay quirks could actually fit the genre instead of bogging it down. I don't know why it took so long for the lightbulb to go off for them, but they really seem much more fit to make RPGs.

A quote from Wikipedia:

Grand Knights History is a traditional console role-playing game set in a fantasy world where players must take control of a group of up to four characters from three separate classes--knight, archer, or wizard--who must travel through various landscapes battling enemies and take part in the story.

Traditional, fantasy and especially since it’s turn-based, all sounds good for me. Will be looking for this one.

I probably won’t use the online aspect, but this sounds like the kind of RPG that I enjoy.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet... It looks like Rising Star are publishing GKH in PAL land:

Rising Star Games to publish Grand Knights History in the PAL market
Highly-acclaimed 2D RPG from Marvelous Entertainment and Vanillaware headed to PSP 2012

Thursday 22nd September 2011 – Rising Star Games today announced that it has signed a deal to publish Grand Knights History in PAL territories on PSP. The latest title from renowned developer Vanillaware (Muramasa: The Demon Blade) features gorgeous hand-drawn graphics, addictive gameplay, customisable character creation and unique online functionality. Players choose which faction they will fight for and develop squads of four individual characters to battle enemies in this turn based RPG.

Yeah, you guys got it. And fear not, we ARE releasing a physical copy as well!

As for whether or not we're releasing an LE, I really couldn't say -- it's something we'll need to look into. But, I mean, this IS Vanillaware's George Kamitani on art and Hitoshi Sakimoto's Basiscape on music, so there's certainly plenty of material to use for one! You'll just have to stay tuned to find out whether or not we can pull it off. :)
