Looks like there are only a few southern pockets of the city still in rebel hands

The rebels in the old city surrendered in the end, the army is advancing so fast that I can see this being over before Christmas.

Sucks that Syria won't have a liberal revolution any time soon, but unfortunately the people of Aleppo are probably better off under Assad than ISIS at this point.

So did the liberal elements of the FSA whittle away or were they a myth to begin with?

They got whittled away in the early parts of the war due to insufficient support from the west. The hardcore side (Al Qaeda, Nusra Front, etc.) did not have this issue as the Saudi's and other gulf states funded and armed anyone they could so long as they were against Assad. Because of this, many of the moderates joined those groups instead.

It wasn't a myth or smoke and mirrors, it was a very real possibility to get moderate rebels in control, but the west can not be depended on such things. There would of still been a need for international peacekeeping force or such even if they did win though.

Yeah, I do not know why everyone keeps thinking ISIS is a threat to Syria or even Iraq.. They been largely getting pushed back and the only reason they made it this far is due to incompetence of the Iraqi leadership and the infighting in Syria with Assad barely doing anything about them because they also fight the rebels and Kurds (not that the rebels wanted to fight ISIS either).

85% of Aleppo is now under the control of the Syrian government and in other news Jordan has sealed its borders going both ways. I guess this puts an end to the US training mission and prevents fighters, supplies from entering Syria.

Ithe seems like victory in Aleppo for the government is a foregone conclusion at this point. Not only is it symbolic and a serious blow to rebel morale, it'll also free up troops and firepower for the other fronts of the war.

seems like the Obama administration is sending as many weapons to the rebels as possible before Trump gets into office. John Kerry also admits what the Syrian and Russian government have been saying for months.. that the rebels in Aleppo have prevented the entry of humanitarian aid and civilian exit from the city.

What assurances do we have that those weapons won’t fall into the wrong hands as we’ve seen happen in the past? And also with regards to the evacuation of civilians, what kind of measures are in place to pressure some of the rebel groups who’ve been accused of not allowing some of the civilians to leave those areas?

SECRETARY KERRY: Well, let me deal with the second part first. It is true that there have been some occasions where certain elements of opposition have – excuse me – where certain elements of the opposition have threatened people who were going to leave and in some cases prevented humanitarian assistance from being delivered. That is a very serious offense also, and we have taken steps with respect to anyone we have communication. We don’t have communication with all of these groups. There are different countries and different players engaged in that, but we have relayed to everybody that is absolutely unacceptable behavior and we would not support anybody who engages in that activity.
