It's funny to quote Phil these days, don't do it or you setup yourself for more disappointment.

Though I also believe there is no way it costs 599.

really its so funny peope still use old articles of spencer to make any point, the man had said a lot of things thats for sure, almost none of them where true at the end,so its gonna be funny when they reveal the real price

PS5 IS $600 for the disc drive version. They are waiting for Xbox to say $600 US dollars first because of the memes from a decade ago.

The only problem is Xbox wont ever say $600, but they haven't decided $500 or $450 is correct until PS5 shows something.

That is why we are here today.

XSX is a $250-$300 machine. It's not going to even sniff the XSX price being both weaker and years later.

These companies got deals when picking hardware, those saving need passed onto us because without the purchase...if we get close to PC prices... their digital store fronts are dust. They cannot have that, especially on the eve of digital only without any bad press like last time.

And PCs are cool again with the kids, so they know they can't fuck it up and let the kids say "PC...mom it's only X dollars more" for this rig that watches porn in my room.

After that article last year about BOM from Bloomberg on PS5, how would they sell it for $599 and not make some kind of profit. And from what we've heard that number for BOM has gone down. So to me $499-549 is more than likely the price.

$499 at the low point and 449 for Digital edition.

If any one of those consoles xbox or playstation advertise a $599 price we are going to be in dark times.

Given the information out there, it wouldn't surprise me if they come in at 299 and 599. Though MS might want price parity with PS5 and go 299 and 499. The Series S might be a loss leader but they'll make up the expense with digital transactions, like the PS5 digital edition.

599$ was my guess all the way back to 1-1.5 year ago, basically an X1X+100$ due to SSD and extra 4GB RAM, but then everyone including the media/leakers started to mention 499$ over and over again so I thought maybe I'm just wrong. But BOM=/=retail price, I have a hard time believing anyone would want to go on stage and mention 599 ever again. I expect neither of the console to exceed 549$ at worst.

Considering rumors about 600$ have increased in the last two weeks, Tom Warren saying "499$ would be very bold by MS", and the existence of XSS.... odds have certainly increased and I would probably put money on 599$.

I'm predicting
PS5/XSX $499
PS5 Digital $399
Series S $299

Nobody really knows what these things cost to make, people throw estimates around without knowing what kind of deals the companies have in place etc.
At these price points who would buy the series S. The PS5 digital is like 2.5 times more powerful for an extra 100 dollars?

People are buying phones for 1000 dollars and more, and only using them for things like candy crush and whats app(a cheap 200 dollar android is more then enough for that). They also buy new ones 2 years for the same high price. Yet a console people use 5-6 years for 600 dollars is dark times? Factor in inflation, 600 dollars today isnt comparable when the Ps3 cost that much.

Playstation probably think they are on the cusp of having Apple brand power. They want to make a tidy sum out of the gate, and they may just be able to. The only barrier is $599 meme, or they would have already ran with it, taken preorders, etc.

Most people don't pay $1000 out the gate for their phones. I have a Galaxy S20, which is a $1000 phone. But I'm paying $10 a month for it on my bill.

Microsoft knows they can't get away with a $600 Xbox. It won't be over $500.

If either is over $500, it would be PS5.

Phones are also a open market. You can buy a really good to great spec phone on the cheap now.

Phones that are $1000 are for morons who want to waste their money. Unless they are using it for their career like in news where it becomes a lav mic and sometimes camera. But for the average person, if your seriously going out and spending $1000 your either not concerned with money or buy into what these companies tell you to make you buy their product at exorbitant prices.

AKA most Apple fans.

These are consoles. Outside of a couple systems that were super expensive because of bad manufacturing decisions like 3DO, Turbo Graphics, and PS3. Most consoles for the longest time were in the 300-400 dollar range.

I mean VR has in essence gotten cheaper because there are more options.

Xbox might be going this route hence a $299 sku.

I think the issue is that if both companies were putting out one sku and pricing it $599 they would be pricing themselves out of a market.

Similar to what is happening to Nividia, and Intel.

That's the thing though, the XSS can only be so cheap by just cutting back to hit a lower resolution.

Even if it has less RAM and Storage as well as a smaller GPU, it still needs all the same CPU, I/O, sound tech, high end types of RAM and SSD, full fat ports and expansion card tech, controller and all the other gubbins the XSX has.

There's a certain point in stripping back and shrinking down where it will actually start being more expensive to maintain compatibility.

A third of the XSX's power at half of the price actually sounds pretty good value considering the hardware that this thing will still need to be packing.

I can't see either being $599 but I can see the Series X being more than the PS5. As I have said before, it is Microsoft who seemingly have felt they needed to create a stripped back cheaper alternative to their high end next gen machine. Why else would they need to do that unless the Series X was going to be more expensive than their competition?

I’m not comparing it to the series X though. I’m saying if it’s within a 100 dollars of the PS5 DE. Surely it’ll be DOA.

I think the XSS will never see the light of day and MS will instead eat the cost of undercutting Sony with a $549 XSX, or even just stick a year of Gamepass in at $599.

But Microsoft have Controller packaging out there in the wild showing Xbox Series X|S on them. Surely they wouldn't just have that advertised and never come out?

This couldn't be any more far from the truth - people use smartphones almost 24/7, really, they even sleep and take bath with them, and that's exactly why they are willing to spend absurd amount of money even every year, and gaming is just a tiny part of the activity the smartphones provide, whereas gaming consoles do just that, play games, noting more, and many people don't even play on a daily basis, so the price of the consoles, not to mention the games (which in comparison are most of the time free on smartphones) does scare many people off. I know a lot of people who are always a generation behind, and got PS4/XB1 really just recently (in case someone wonders who the hell still buys GTA5 ;)), because a sub-199$ price and used 5-10$ games are an attractive price for them for just playing video games every now and then, during the weekends or a rainy day. For real, 499-599 for something that has barely anything new to offer and won't have for the next 2-3 years, that's a clear no-go for many, who will wait for the Slim revisions that are lower price and arrive when there is actually quite a bunch of new games already available.

Canada eh
They could come out eating monsters after all BUT if they price the Series X above the PS5 and justify it because they got a lower priced Series S... They may as well throw everything it the trash because it will just be counterproductive.

Those aren't officially released yet I thought?

Even so, it wouldn't be the first time products have appeared on packaging that has never seen the light of day.

Conversly, if the PS5 Digital ends up being so cheap that it's not cost effective to use the XSS to try to undercut it, then what's the point? If they end up the same price, that would be a disaster.

Simple fact is that if it is over 450, only the Xbox hardcore will buy it..... unless it starts at 500 and then drops substantially during the first year, I don't see it doing 'well'.

A $599 video game console right now at this time in current world conditions is a bad, bad idea.

Vast economic chaos and instability, combined with vast unemployment at record levels, and a major viral pandemic, — anything over $500+ psychologically is going to turn away the general consumer.

Thats the reason why pricing hasn’t been announced because both Sony and Microsoft know they’re likely sitting still too high on MSRP and they’re going to resort to trying to undercut the other somehow.

Honestly 2020 console launch is extremely weak and anemic for both companies. The best thing that could happen is both push them back into 2021 when there are actual enough launch games worth buying that aren’t current gen crossovers.

2013 console launch was pretty anemic, this is far worse.

Sorry, but its no more then Whatsapp, Facebook ,Twitter, and taking pictures occasionally. Things that a cheap smartphone could do already years ago.Spec of highendphones are actually only usefull for gaming, nothing else. ( or what application is is that needs huge cpu/gpu on smartphones??)

I'm sticking with $500 for Series X and $300 for Series S. As for PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, im sticking with $500 and $600 for the Disc Edition.

I've come to terms with possible $599 for both XSX and PS5 since they were initially revealed... people that keep saying they want $399 are dreaming. We are getting 10x the machines than we did in 2013 and you should be ok with paying for the huge increase in performance.

A 10x increase is not exactly huge for a console generation.

Conversly the £350 the PS4 launched for in 2013 is only equivalent to about £400 now with inflation.

Given that both the PS4 and PS4PRO aimed for the same rough price range, and were incredibly successful, I'm still going to bet on Sony at least wanting to maintain that price point for the PS5, even if thwy have to sell the Digital version at a loss to meet it.

MS however have painted themselves into a corner with their fostered reputation for the strongest console regardless of cost.

If either console is going to have a higher price tag, it's the XSX. If it weren't expected to be more expensive, then the XSS also wouldn't have needed to exist.

Uncharted bunghole
Sony and M$ waiting for the other to reveal price then undercut

Unless they want to undercut the PS5 with the Lockhart. Remember they don't really care if you buy an S or an X. To them they will get the same income from software and services on both. Its a real possibility that the PS5 can get stuck in the middle.

Phil Spencer “I would say a learning from the Xbox One generation is we will not be out of position on power or price,” says Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox and gaming chief, in an interview with The Verge. “If you remember the beginning of this generation we were a hundred dollars more expensive and yes, we were less powerful. And we started Project Scarlett with this leadership team in place with a goal of having market success.”

Xbox Series X = Power
Xbox Series S = Price

Seems to fit the bill.

I have a feeling the XsX will at least be $599 and the S $399 unless MS eats some of the cost.

If this is what were truly waiting on, and the reason no one can secure a pre-order I say MS and Sony have a meeting to set the price of their premium SKUs the same and make them available.

Then they can each go home and price war on the lower end models.

I just want to pre-order but its safe to set aside $500 and play the waiting game with them.

the series S might be a justification for a 599 price point, though I still can't see it. I think MS would take a loss on console to keep it at $499

Perhaps its likely....but its still not worth it.
Dont get me wrong. Im willing to pay higher price for truly next gen experience.
The problem is, nothing ive seen from either company screams "next gen" to me.

Not likely at all. I can't see either company designing a console they knew would cost $599. And MS even less so than Sony.

$499.

Nobody is going above $500. They'll take losses or whatever, but neither going above $500.

The recent "price leak" from Monster where the math worked out to $599 I feel was incorrect. Historically these things are placeholders and, more specifically, the Monster promo came with a copy of Halo Infinite which wasn't included in most people's math.

TLDR: Not gonna be over $500.
