Wow that looks great!

I couldn't really care less about this game or it's genre but, good lord, that looks awesome.

Their choice of period is brilliant.

Outiside of the revealed civs, the Portuguese and the Dutch are a given. That would leave three more. Maybe some indigenous tribes?

Awesome, I want big naval wars in middle of a torment with realitic water, waves and wind, that could be pretty nice.

Chili Con Carnage!
Im not a fan of the series at all but i just dropped by to say this game looks incredible.

This game looks downright unbelievable. Holy crap. I guess the difference between PC games and next-gen consoles is going to be minimal this time. :p

Agreed.
Don't forget the next-gen consoles will be just extremely-very-very-high-end current gen+ (think GF7000 and X900) PCs with laughable amount of RAM. Well the PS3 and Xenon will. Dunno about Revolution, but judging from this gen it will be a lil' less advanced in the GFX area than X2.

Oh, and these shots - mighty impressive. I want Middle-Earth: Total War looking even better damnit!

Another edit: I'm not saying PS3/X2 won't be impressive, just that games won't be mindblowing in the "never-seen-before" aspect. 3DMark05 already beat them to the point ;p

Ottoman Empire seems like a lock, it's different from the European civs and were very important up till WWI

AOE - Elephant hunting
AOE II - Boar hunting
AOE III - Buffalo hunting

Can't wait for my pretty looking villagers to get idly killed by some deranged buffalo.

Crap dude, that's amazing. I thought AoE 1&2 were good but not great, though I liked what they with with AoM. Hopefully they'll figure out how to do a lot of cool stuff like AoM within the more realistic settings.

I can't wait. AOE2 is one of my all-time favourite games. If they keep it the same and just update the already incredible graphics of 2, I will be shocked.

It's definitely an evolution of the Age of Mythology engine looking at those screens. They're just packing in more detail and polygons.

Date of Lies
I don't think you're in touch with computer graphics, Half-Life 2, at it's best (and it's a feat, for sure) can't produce anything near as smooth in a still screen, and you want this possible in a year? Maybe in the labs, but no one can that amount of processing power to fit on a graphics card to be sold within a year and no software publishers develop games which can't be optimized on unreleased and unannonced cards.

It's clear that it's a drawing with computer touch ups. Hard to see how anyone could tell otherwise.

MetatronM
Seriously. How could anybody mistake that for anything else? It's clearly a piece of concept artwork.

It's hand-drawn art with computer coloring, filtering, and effects.

Yeah yeah, every generation I swaer...

Looks great, but I don't see why it shouldn't. Is there some sort of rule that says the best RTS games shouldn't look as good as the best FPSs or something?

What's impressive about Ensemble's work is that it looks superb but doesn't need a Cray Supercomputer to run it on. Age of Mythology is a very beautiful game that pushes a lot of nifty features. But it's super scalable and kicks ass on low end hardware too.

Looks nice, but it doesn't seem like that big of a leap.

Looks like Battle for Middle Earth with better grass and DX9 effects on the water.

It looks good, no doubt. But not unbelievable. A little more polys, a little more effects, and you have AOE3. I imagine I'll be impressed again when the next big breathrough comes, or when I cannot tell a scene uses polys and textures.

Aside from the filtering, what's so impressive? Low Polys abound. Not to mention it's another AOE game. Zzzzz. Wake me up when you have a fresh idea, developers.

Honestly, I think it's important to remember that as nice as the game looks there is always a LOT going on onscreen, and I would gladly sacrifice the graphics if everything was a consistent framerate on some less-than top-notch PCs.

This is not actually next year's PC graphics, it all looks like DX9 class shaders. Current high end PC systems can do this.

Yup. That's what I was noting earlier with the AoM comparison. This is AoM's engine with more polys and all the current level effects turned on. It's really not groundbreaking but it does look nice.

So is this game going to allow us to slaughter countless American Indians and then break all the treaties we sign? Can we import slaves from Africa?

Seems like this series is getting a bit too close to recent atrocities that America has committed. I wonder to what extent it will be sanitized.

It has additional DX9 shaders and some HDR lighting and/or bloom effect added, but yes. I also think next gen will look like this at best when it launches because developers will first try to match current PC tech.. it will probably develop somewhat parallel to PCs and fall behind when it reaches the tech barrier.

Well yeah, but my point was that most people do not have high-end PCs and one thing great about the AoE series (as what used to be about the RCT series) is that many systems could run them and they looked great.

do you even have to ask these questions? Though it is funny you focus on american atrocities when the series has already glossed over countless "atrocities" through history that other countries have committed.

Regardless of that, this is a GREAT series and I cannot wait for this one. It looks amazing and I can't wait to play it. They sounded like they are pretty far along. Awsome stuff
