Alan Wake 2 “looks promising”, Remedy hiring for new Xbox 360 title

Word on the street, or rather on job listing site Gamasutra, is that Remedy’s hiring for a new Xbox 360 title.

According to the listing, the Finland-based studio is currently looking to hire a Lead Level Designer to join its “AAA console team” on a new “Xbox 360” title. The listing suggests that the game will have a heavy focus on “compelling narrative and intense action” and that applicants should be well-versed in “drama and storytelling”.

While it’s hardly confirmation, the bet would be on a sequel to 2010’s Alan Wake, which was also an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Though the game saw lackluster sales during its first two weeks, selling only 145,000 units according to NPD Group, one of the game’s writers Mikko Rautalahti previously stated that the story is “bigger than one game” and that the sequel (if made) would be both “weird and wonderful”.

The psychological thriller sees players step into the shoes of author Alan Wake, as he desperately try’s to save his wife from the mysterious darkness that’s engulfing the small town of Bright Falls, where the couple are vacationing. The game combines intense action, intuitive gameplay and compelling storytelling, with the player’s primary weapon being light.

In addition to the above, the April issue of OXM’s (Official Xbox Magazine) rumor section is carrying the following intriguing statement in quotation marks:

“Yes or no for Alan Wake 2? We shook The Ball and it said, “It looks promising”.

Last month at GDC Remedy’s Markus Maki stated that while Alan Wake’s exclusivity to Microsoft’s platform was a “business risk” it was also one that helped the developer stay focused.

Unless it is more open world, less linear, no thanks. Alan Wake had some of the best environments that I just wanted to explore but unfortunately I wasn't allowed to do this. Give it to me in part 2 and its day 1.

No thanks. They'd have to rewrite much of the story and characters for me to forget/overlook the awfulness of the first one's story. I'd rather see Remedy starting all over, while still using their now established engine/assets. But that's just my personal preference in terms of other prudent potentially creative avenues Remedy could look into. If sufficient people like it and Remedy themselves want to continue down this uninspiring path, who am I to say otherwise?

Alan Wake is as AAA as a game can be for me. Sure it has some flaws but it is one of the best games I have played this generation.

Oh, please keep it as linear as you want. Open world is not suited to every game, certainly not one with emphasis on the story. Imagine an open world Uncharted, that would just be stupid IMO.

Well said. I couldn't agree more.

Holy shit, did not really expect this considering the disastrous development time and mediocre sales of the first one.

That said, love the game and hope it happens!

Hasn't it sold over a million units by now? I wouldn't say that's too bad for a brand new IP. And honestly, it wasn't really hyped that much. It was definitely advertised, but not as much as other MS games.

Yay!

Alan Wake was AAA?
I'd say they put plenty of money behind it. I saw ads all over the place, and they had that series of live-action webisodes, too.

I really like Alan Wake and I would love another. It was such a good game. It also had some of the best sound and use of LFE I've ever heard in a video game.

Alan Wake threads have so much haters...
Maybe there is a reason why? Maybe the game actually isn't as good as some make it out to be? Maybe some of the complaints are actually, I don't know, well-founded?

Or maybe those are people's opinions.

I didn't say anything about that. I'm talking about haters here.

I really liked Alan Wake, but I hope MS better positions the release of this one and gets it the sales it deserves.

I disagree. Just look at games like RDR, Mafia 2 and the upcoming LA Noire.

The Alan Wake webisodes were so good I actually hoped it would become successful enough to turn into a show.

Except most complaints come from people who actively admit they never played it because it wasn't on their platform of choice, or at a resolution they could register with their post-human eyesight.

There are things to criticise Alan Wake about, but most of the time they aren't addressed, it's this periphery bullshit that ends up polluting AW thread, and look, I've just become part of it.

Oh well. Great game, had some fresh ideas and I'd love to see a sequel.

To be fair, Mafia 2 and LA Noire aren't open world in the traditional sense, and have certainly taken a more directed, linear route for the emphasis of story. So in a way your examples kind of disprove your point.

Every game needs to be open world the same way every FPS needs to have multiplayer. By which I mean, it doesn't. Besides, Alan Wake is linearity done right. I never once felt constrained by the environment.

Alan Wake was not an amazing game, but I would be interested in a sequel. Something about it got its hooks in me.

I feel the same. If the developers listen to its fans and improves on enemy types, variety of encounters, less collect-a-thon, Alan Wake 2 could become something wonderful.

Hoping for Alan Wake 2. While the original had its flaws, particularly in the gameplay department, I found the story to be incredibly intriguing and would love to see it continue. I still haven't played through the DLC, however as I understand it, the content was created as a bridge, so I may just hold off until this as-yet-unknown title is announced.

Now that I've seen Twin Peaks, I'll have to give Alan Wake another play-through.

I really enjoyed some aspects of Alan Wake, but I couldn't finish the game three months after picking it up. I had better get on that, but I'd be cautiously hopeful for a sequel if this comes to pass. That is "something about" it that makes me remember it fondly despite hitting a wall; maybe the atmospheric nature, the silly "last time on Alan Wake," whatever it was.
