All Last-Gen 32/64-Bit U.S. J.RPG Sales (SAT, PSX, N64)

IT IS COMPLETE!!

Okay so what do the comments and accuracy mean?
Comments:
Final - it's done selling and these are the Life-time total
Missing some minor mos. - usually missing Feb/Mar '02 and/or some mos. in 2003 but not a big deal since little was selling by then.
LTD - still selling - life-to-date and still selling this year; not final.
Accuracy:
Projected - means the nos. have since bin revised since my data was compiled thus I revised them as close as I could to the newer data (but still may be off by a few hundred or a thousand. I used the same method for the 16-bit RPG sales).
Actual - means these are the exact NPD raw newer/revised sales and have no need for adjusting.

I would also like to add in that Pokemon does not count, and if it does, you have to add in all the other stupid monster training games from PSX like Monster Rancher.

I agree Zelda & monster-training games aren't RPGs but this the list ethelred put together for me to look up. If you have a problem w/ what's included take it out on ethelred.

Not Stadium, no.

I'd like to see the final totals for the GB games. Can you tell us, Square2005?

How can Suikoden 2 and Valkyrie Profile have higher resale mark-ups than Persona 2 when both games outsold the latter by 3 and 6:1 (even before the reprint)!? And the Tactics Ogre port sells the least with 16k ... teh mind boggles ....

Cool.

Do they still print those old PS1 Square RPGs or something? I still find them new now and again.

If it says 'LTD - still selling' then they are still available in some stores- new.

Man, those are good numbers, even for the sequel (which wasn't received as well and released just a month before the PS2); both probably did over a million worldwide. I really wish SE would make a PE3 for the PS3, and hopefully more in the vein of the first game.

It's not good numbers for the sequel to sell less than half of the original, whether good or bad in terms of gameplay, especially if that "less than half" is less than 250,000 on a system with a 40 million userbase.

ANYWAYS.....

where's Aidyn Chronicles (THQ) for the N64?

Thank you for compiling this data btw. It's great to see these numbers. Zelda was bigger than FF in the US = Excellent!

Plus Paper Mario for GCN has OWNED Paper Mario for N64 and it makes me happy to know that.

Lovely data, thanks a lot :)

Square stuff does amazing as usual...really resembles this gen situation. What a f*cking shame Namco Hometek can't handle games, thats asking too much for them, burn in hell and such.

Makes me wonder how will FFXII do...FFX clearly resembles FFVII, now...will FFXII resemble VIII (2m) or IX (1.5m). Uhm...I hope VIII levels!

As someone said in another thread, what a f*cking shame Square wasted all their great selling franchises in SNES and PSX. That FF movie hurt Square more than we thought....

kenta

Has no PEINS
Argh Vagrant Story sold better than a lot of other SE games that have since received sequels

Please make VS-2 next Matsuno :(

I guess this helps quiet the people who claim PDS only had 5,000 copies printed :lol

BTW Suikoden/II sold pretty well.
I'm pretty sure Persona: Revelations sold horribly despite its ROCKING cover art.
Ogre Battle 64 did alright although as the only strat RPG on a system I guess it would've done better had it been released sooner.

Is there a thread for how much these games sold in Japan?

And yeah Sega only pressed 5000 copies of PDS, but demand forced two more pressings if i remember correctly.

How can we live in a world where Alundra 2 sold that many copies :( :(

Anyway, great info., thanks for the thread

Also, I can't see that there's any reasonable definition of "RPG" under which Pokemon wouldn't be considered an RPG.

It was also an Atlus game, which generally means rather limited print runs.

You're joking me...this game sold that much o_O

I remember it being released during the summer, when there was pretty much nothing else coming out -- that always help. (See also: Tales of Symphonia, Disgaea...)

WTF is wrong with you people? How does Quest 64 sell over 300k and how does LoD sell almost a million copies?
Quest 64 = RPG starved Nintendo fans.

Legend of the Dragoon = Sony published. Massive ad campaign. There were ads for it on television for months after it came out. It also had a "Greatest Hits" reprinting.

Oh God don't remind of the rpg fan nightmare known as the N64.

Most of the game on that N64 list isn't even jrpgs.

N64 really only had

Quest 64, Ogre Battle 64, and Paper Mario. Ogre battle was more of a tactical RPG and Paper Mario was sort of a whole new type of rpg. So all we had left was Quest 64. God that sucked.

Also freakin like 10 stores in my neighborhood are still selling Legend of the Dragoon for 9.99. Everytime I go though it seems like 0 copies sold. I remember the advertising for this game. I don't think I've ever seen more comercials for a game.

Cool thread. Neat because it is pretty much all the games I bought last gen.

Alundra 2, Legaia, Dragoon, Wild Arms 2, Grandia, and I think Star Ocean were all published by Sony. That would explain the unusually high numbers. Though Star Ocean deserved them.

Those numbers for Hybrid Heaven and Quest 64 makes me think more RPGs could have been successful on the N64 if developers gave it a chance. In Japan, they probably would have sorld horribly though.

What about Eternal Eyes, for the PS1? Very late released tactical RPG (after PS2 came out) for PS1 which I think sold for $9.99 new (from Crave).

Not that I actually care (though I do own it), just mentioning for sake of completeness.

Sheesh, those Saturn numbers sure put SoA's RPG stance in perspective. All that angst over "Stolar giving WD the finger" seems much ado about nothing in retrospect too. How many hardcore RPG fans could there have been on the Saturn? Ten or twenty thousand, maybe?
