They make a profit from anything over what it costs for a user to download the game (bandwidth costs, which probably isn't much for a small game like PAIN). It's all in the variable costs!

Bought the PAIN add-on. Maybe now I will actually play it. I've had it since it launched, and while the core game provides fun for 10 minutes, the add-ons were ridiculously priced and I never purchased any of them.
