Slide from their presentation. (look on the right)

A mobile chip for consoles? Does this make any sense?

Disclaimer : I know, that they could also simply refer to Xbox360/WiiU

Thanks to Globox_82 in the PS4 thread for the link:
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/12/17/amd-announce-gcn-2-0-graphics-but-dont-get-too-excited-just-yet/

PC Gamer said:
Yes, that’s right AMD’s HD 8000 series graphics cards are on their way as we speak – the embargo has lifted and I’m now allowed to tell you that the Graphics Core Next (GCN) 2.0 generation of GPUs is imminent.

But unfortunately they’re coming to a laptop probably not very near you first.

This time last year I was all giddy and excited by the first gen GCN cards to arrive in my test rig, the HD 7970 and the HD 7950. Ah, halcyon days. But this year all Santa can bring me from Texas are the mobile spins of AMD’s GCN 2.0 architecture.

AMD are touting the first lineups of the HD 8000 series as the HD 8500M, HD 8600M, HD 8700M and HD 8800M. This takes care of the mainstream and low-end enthusiast platforms, with the top-end HD 8900M series looking like it’s coming later on next year.

AMD reckons the big thing is the fact that this generation represents the first to have a top-to-bottom lineup of 28nm GCN-based cards. Last year saw anything from the HD 7600M and below being based on the older 40nm tech.

This then is why AMD are calling the HD 8000M series GCN 2.0.

There don’t seem to be any architectural changes as far as I can see, and in a briefing call the AMD spokesman explained the ‘2.0’ simply referred to this being the second generation of GPUs to sport the GCN core architecture.

Oops!

How do they compare to the GPU in the Wii U?

Completely differnet architecture generations/lithography.

VLIW vs GCN, 40(?)nm vs 28nm.

I'm sure that the basis for next gen GPUs/APUs is in this 8000 series but the actual chip design will of course be custom modified to a specific console. Either way, I'm glad for AMD. They're a good company (even though Intel blew them away in desktop CPUs). All these rumors that their tech is NextBox/PS4 shows the confidence of Sony/MS in AMD.
Looking forward to first next gen leaks. ;)

Not really. It says they (AMD) are, not card (HD8000M) itself.

1TF is half of last generation medium spec gfx card (6870) which had 2TF. And it's what essentially is inside WiiU (~1TF) (aside from newer architecture).

None of these 8000M chips will end up in nextgen consoles, but the architecture will be the same. We all expect 2TF+ chips to be in there, at least.

Laptops run on batteries and ~40W of total power consumption, consoles will be plugged to the wall and will be using 100W+.

They have fewer stream processors than the previous gen - are they no longer five-dimensional and more in line with Nvidia's architecture?
I know that in the past 1 Nvidia CUDA core = roughly 5 AMD cores.

Wii U has about half that.

Who's we? Don't be so sure.
I wouldn't necessarily expect mobile parts either.

I guess, the real news is the Xbox3 Beta thing then :p
Some mod may add this to the title? :)

~4830 like card which is about 750-800GF and considering newer architecture we can safely say it's about 900 GF to 1 TF.

Absolutely not. It is definitely VLIW, but from what we know it's not a vanilla 4xxx equivalent either.

This may be the big announcement -soon- that has been rumored. "Launch deck 8000M December 2012 NDA Embargo date December 17, 2012 3PM" and we have a tweet that the Xbox3 Beta is shipping on the same day. AMD is also under NDA and has a roadmap of dates that they can release information on Next generation.

I think they were forced to go with Mobile as 28nm Performance silicon has too many issues. There are three wafer "formulas" and SLP super low power is what both TSMC and GloFlo are going to with 20nm and TSMC uses it with Jaguar APUs @28nm. I'm guessing they have higher yields with mobile. Mobile GPU designs on SLP can be clocked up to the same speed as Jaguar or 1.6Ghz with turbo mode 2.4 Ghz but as speed increases it gets less efficient and hot. Clock speeds on these mobile GPUs can be increased in a console up to the heat dissipation limit.

Using SLP silicon could also be a reason why we won't have BC as SPUs in Cell and PPU in Xbox 360 run at 3.2Ghz which is way above the limits of SLP silicon.

Look at the description in the op link. Fits with a APU + GPU design and Jaguar is a mobile GPU, Thebe is a moon of Jupiter and fits the AMD solar system naming convention for Mobile.

"slated for a CES 2013 launch" I expect more information there. Guys you are forgetting the ecosystem that can/will be used with next generation game consoles will likely be shown at CES so lots of clues coming.

That would be insane. Poor Wii U how would it cope?? Nintendo might have to stop making home consoles by the end of the Wii U lifetime if it is another repeat of the Wii at the end of its life cycle..they've set themselves up for a fall.

I was hoping to go just PC but if they do step up properly with the rumoured 8/16GB ram as well as this range of GPU and hopefully a beefy CPU to go with it (how could they not, that would be dumb
;)
) then I'll have to get both...they always push consoles more - and I don't think steam sales are helping non-indies much.

Obviously I'm talking about PS4 for Vita compatibility and no live fees and my regular games.

Poor Wii U - how could it possibly compete with these <1tf mobile gpus! Nintendo should throw in the towel

Oh Mobile, missed that 'M'. Well it makes sense..power consumption and heating would be insane. Should be beefy still, but yeah not quite what I was thinking lol.

Also about steam sales not helping non-indies - I mean not pleasing them as much, I'm sure it helps.

Mobile chips are about two-three gens back in terms of raw performance when compared with pc parts although they have the updated hardware features.

People expecting top of the line PC parts in next gen consoles are going to be disappointed. Still going to be a massive improvement graphics wise compared to this gen and wiiU though.

It's kinda early for xbox 3 beta kits...

Almost sounds like MS could have a mass manufacturing goal starting halfway through the year

No more launching with 500k units?

I wonder how much a rotating PlayStation badge costs anyway. Hopefully my current 7800 series will fare well through the coming generation. Feels like I jumped the gun a bit upgrading.

Hard to tell. 7800 is the lower to mid end of AMD's current tech. I was thinking that I will be needing to upgrade my 7970 Lightning. Best to wait and see.

Not really considering the news that MS expected/wanted the CPU to enter mass production at the end of 2012. I guess a lot depends on whether or not the fulfilment rate of the chip production has improved.

Earlier reports from September pointed towards some problems in quality. We shall just need to wait and see. The more troubling news for Sony fans was the news that it looked like the CPU for the PS4 won't be hitting production at IBM until after the Nextbox hinting at a 2014 launch.

Mobile chips make perfect sense for low profile console use and still blow the doors off what's in any existing console.

People didn't seriously think they were going to get 2 PCIe cards, right?

You can get a 2TFLOP mobile GPU. Thats the upward end of expectations for next gen.

Wasn't there a rumour that next box would have 1TF GPU? Distinctly remember something of the sort.

No, next-gen consoles won't be using these low-mid end mobile GPUs. 8xxxm series sure, why not,, but not 88yy series. Unlike Wii U they won't be targeting a (mainstream) laptop power envelope.

So are people still expecting GeForce GTX680-690 kind of performance on the next gen consoles?
No one ever expected 690. As for 680, I could see roughly the same amount of GFLOPs in at least one of the consoles. Of course, that would be AMD Gflops, which are usually less effective in practice.

I would expect that for sure. If something close to those specs don't happen, I'll be happy to stick with PC, especially since I'm losing interest in many of the exclusives as of late. Win win. I think they know they have to trump current pc's at launch, though.

FYI, the 8800M is a rebrand of the 7800M (with marginally modified default clocks). The 7800M launched in April of 2012, along with the 7900M, which is significantly more powerful than the 7800M/8800M.

In short, I find it highly unlikely that this launch has anything to do with the next gen consoles.

I'm not sure where that feeling comes from. Since when does consoles have to compete with the PC?
