Amy Hennig: God Bless Sony for Supporting AAA Single Player; I Don’t Fault EA for Project Ragtag

Well my opinion is Amy is spot on, single player games - even when they sell well - do not generate the money of multiplayers with plenty of microtransations, therefore you are possibly putting in more work for less reward. If you believe your only reward is the money you make. If you are more in line with the artist's thinking, your reward is to make a truly celebrated work of art. However, with this being a business, money talks so therefore you see less and less true AAA single player experiences. Sony puts their money where their mouth is, and takes bets on the single player.

Not one to rest on their ass though, Yoshida came out and said while he is happy with the company's SP success, he wishes they had more success on the multiplayer side. Since that is coming from the horse's mouth, I expect at least one division of one of their studios to be cooking something up in the multiplayer area. We already know TLoU2 will have multiplayer, and perhaps the return of Killzone (Not made by GG, who we can assume are concentrating on HZD2) or some such.

As a fan of single-player games, this pleases me.

Shortly after the release of God of War 2018, GamesIndustry.biz had an editorial on why they believe AAA, big-budget single-player games is an increasingly difficult model to sustain in today's climate. I found it interesting reading:
GamesIndustry.biz said:
That very logic means Sony is presently operating on a level that's simply out of reach to most third parties. It's great news for Sony and its studios; but for those wishing that the commercial logic of single-player games will find a healthy balance, Sony's blockbusters are a false hope.

It has been sad to watch the decline of the single player experience over the past decade or so. Luckily I believe Sony and Nintendo will never forget the importance of quality first party titles driving system sales so I don't think we ever have to worry about single player games going away completely, but they will probably become more scarce unless something drastically changes within the industry

This is a good article, but I think he's not giving enough credit to the many 3rd party games that get put out from publishers that have a similar mindset to Sony. Rockstar with Red Dead 3, Bethesda with many of its games (FallOut4, DOOM, etc), CD Project RED with the Witcher 3 and Cyperpunk 2077 and so on. EA and Activision could do this too but they've chosen to go with shared worlds where your single player game is also a shared world/multiplayer game to generate profit.

I'd say Ubisoft has taken a cool approach to this gen by constantly sticking to their games and adding content which is cool. But the industry is fine with the way it is. We have to adjust to the fact that 80% of games will not be single player only or single player "FIRST" games anymore. Those companies above will still make them and Nintendo will too and that's good enough.

Sony exclusives keep me firmly entrenched in their ecosystem. I'm still hoping they do another handheld because while I still have a massive Vita back log I want new games too. I picked up a new 2 DS to play some smt games and desperately miss my Vita every time I play them, Form and Function wise.

Once AAA single player games officially bite the dust (it is inevitable) I will be saving a lot of money. Nintendo and indies will be enough and those two are safe for now.

I will enjoy the ride for the time being.

Its precisely the reasons above why I love Single Player games.

I don't like open world filled with fetch me quests.
I don't have the time for 500 hr games anymore.
I don't like live services in games.
But most SP games nowadays are open world and they are exactly what you are describing.
We hardly get linear SP games anymore.

I do love single player games, sure I play online but sometimes you just want to play through a really solid story like Uncharted 4 or God of War (PS4) The Last of Us Part II will kick some ass as well. I feel like this is maybe why my PS4 gets more play time than my Xbox One, although I tend to use my Xbox One more for RTS type games.

I definitely agree Amy Hennig should be heading up a studio for Sony vs waiting for companies like EA to finally make good choices.

As someone who prefers single player games , any dev that continues to put single player games at the forefront should be praised. The problem for me is that I personally have no interest in much of Sony's in-house single player games.

This is why I buy Sony and Nintendo consoles: the emphasis on AAA experiences that are not contingent upon multiplayer participation.

I have never purchased an Xbox, which is weak in the SP area.

"Sony supports single player!"

Yeah, single player movies.

As much as I don't like Nintendo, at least they try to give a little bit of variety in their offerings.

yeah as long as you like all your characters coming from either the Super Mario universe or the Zelda universe there are a ton of great single player options with Nintendo.

What I like about Sony is that they give me both quality western single player games and Japanese single player games and Nintendo also has fantastic first party and third party Japanese single player games. As long as this two keep giving me quality single player games then I'm happy.

They have all the incentive to keep giving those types of games too.

An Amy Hennig penned Star Wars game would have been incredible and undoubtedly would have sold well. Such a waste of her talent to let it get cancelled. I heard she's gone indie. Is there any updated to anything she's working on?

I’ll quit gaming if SP dies.

I'd probably still play some online games with friends every now and then

But yeah, If the day comes that good SP are dead gaming will go from being a hobby to more of a time waster when im bored and there's literally nothing better to do

The industry needs to figure out the financials of SP eventually. You can't have a massive aspect of gaming just fade like that.

Also, someone really needs to hire her. The fact that she's not holding grudges really says a lot.

Weird she mentions Destiny clones. I wish that were an actual thing as I'm fairly fed up with Destiny, and not that optimistic about Anthem with the combat looking like trash. Only clone I've found was a iOS game called Shadowgun but even that isn't that great. I mean it's OK for phone but meh. The best part about that game is that they literally have an in-game casino so there's no doubt about whether you're gambling your money on MTX.

One of the things Sony does to ensure my continued support of their consoles as a customer, thanks for great SP games!

Precisely why I buy few games these days. I'm opting for more games in the vein of Life is Strange and Until Dawn at present.

hmm its interessting how cd project red did manage to make an open world with very INTERESSTING quests instead of those basic fetch me quests you find in almost every other open world game..
Exactly. You sir....you get it. Not many devs can achieve this.

PLEASE COME BACK HOME TO SONY! I'd make her a creative lead of a studio right now.

I actually took a survey that Square/Enix sent out last week. Was actually a pretty long and detailed one. One part had, "which series would you like for us to revive" (in so many words), and I put Legacy of Kain.

I also made mention to contract Amy Hennig again to revive it, etc., now that she is Indy.

I would be there day zero if that ever happened!

I’ll quit gaming if SP dies.

Same here.

Thankfully a lot of well done indie titles are out there for consumption as well.

One trend I don’t like is Sony’s focus on open worlds, (Horizon, Spider, Ghost, Days Gone). I played and enjoyed them all but the typical open world aspects were annoying. Not enough God of War or Last of Us types (which are now partially open world 25hr games) and they simply simply don’t have the balls to publish 10-15 hour linear experiences. Ratchet I guess?
