An Updated Look at Japanese Game Sales on Steam [Steamspy figures - May 2016]

A couple of years ago Nirolak posted a thread detailing the state of Japanese game sales on Steam. Since then we have gained an invaluable tool in Steamspy, making long term sales tracking on Steam easier than any other platform out there. On top of that, we have seen an explosion of Japanese games hit Steam, especially from small publishers.

I have been using Steamspy weekly for well over a year now to look up game sales and to track the sales of specific games that interest me. I am creating this thread as a follow-up to Nirolak's original thread, as well as some of the more targeted JRPG Steamspy threads we have had in the past. Hopefully it will be of interest to some posters, especially those unfamiliar with Steamspy, or for those who would like a more curated view of the sales of Japanese games.

SOME NOTES:

1) All Steam numbers below reflect total owners on Steam, as reported by Steamspy on May 23, 2016. For those of you not familiar with Steamspy, keep the following in mind:

- These numbers are total owners on Steam and not sales through the Steam store specifically. Steamworks titles purchased on Amazon, Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, the Humble Store, at retail, through key sellers, in bundles, or as promotions with video cards or other hardware are included in the figures.

- The numbers are all approximate. If you go to steamspy.com you can see the confidence intervals for each title. Low selling titles (under 30k?) tend to be a less accurate than higher selling titles. Because numbers are approximate (but still quite close in most cases), I have rounded all figures to the nearest 1000.

- Steamspy has a lag of about 3 days. Games that were released within the past 2-3 weeks (such as Final Fantasy X), or games that were heavily discounted over the weekend are most likely to be impacted.

2) I have listed games by publisher with an exception for Arc System Works (to keep their various series in one place). Series with more than 2 entries have been separated to make comparisons between entries easier. Otherwise publishers are listed alphabetically and games are listed in descending order of sales/owners.

I have tried to include all of the major and notable minor Japanese publishers/localization companies (the list below contains about 150 titles from 20 pubs). If I have made any glaring omissions, post the numbers below and I will add them to the OP. I omitted a few series (like Pac Man) on purpose as they differ widely in target audience from most other titles listed.

With a couple of exceptions, I left the Japanese indie scene alone. I am not knowledgeable enough to pick out those titles from the Western indie devs making the same stuff, and I don't really think there is a meaningful regional difference between indie devs.

3) Thanks to Sergey Galyonkin for creating and running Steamspy for all of our benefits.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
It's also worth noting that SteamSpy has a lag of a few days, even though the figures of older, non-discounted releases are unlikely to shift much.

Had to do a double take for the Valkryia Chronicles' sales. 825K? Sweet Jesus that's amazing for what was it, a four-man port effort?

Wow. That's a wide margin between Trails in the Sky FC and SC. 181k and 21k. I don't understand why SC didn't sell a similar number, considering it's a direct sequel.

After all this time, Dragon Quest Heroes never reached the low first month NPD on PS4. Square Enix has a lot of work to do with this franchise here.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 - 718.000
Street Fighter V - 168.000

Street Fighter x Tekken - 113.000
Street Fighter IV - 104.000

If anyone wonder what's going on here, USF4 had a free weekend, SteamSpy itself says the data isn't reliable in such case.

Cause 1st game was long and most people probably didn't finish it. I finished it but still haven't purchased 2nd due to so many other games currently to play. I'll get it eventually but it will be a while

Two what stood out the most for me were:

Valkyria Chronicles
The Last Remnant

Those are insane figures for both!

I'm curious as to how snk are doing with all the kof games now available on pc.

I knew that I would forget something major. I will add SNK Playmore in a few minutes.

How many $5 sales does it take to sell 267k copies of Neptunia Re:Birth 1?

I don't think that I have seen Neptunia much cheaper than $6 actually. I does get a lot of $6-10 sales though.

Good point. Added to the notes section.

You forgot one-

Ikaruga is at around 87,000 owners

Thanks! Added.

Valkryia Chronicles - 825.000

To a million! Let's go!

Looking at the list, it appears that Namco is seeing the most success. I wonder if that's the result of releasing their titles day and date with console, as opposed to the mass majority of games that are late ports...

EDIT: Strange, I don't recall wrapping this in spoiler tags... maybe it's too late at night...

Yeah the older games that have been on sale multiple times for deep discounts and/or included in bundles really skew the data. But there is a clearly a market for these kinds of games at full price in the 20-60k unit range for the "beloved" titles, I'd guess.
Things that PC gamers haven't had access to traditionally seem to do quite well (Trails FC, Disgaea PC even with the awful quality of the port on the latter).

I hope the developers doing this work are encouraged by the numbers here. I personally can't wait to play Trails 3rd.

I bougth SC day one on PSP and Steam but it released the day or a day before a Steam sale. That's never going to end well.

Free weekends only skew data when they are recent. Free weekends from close to a year ago likely have a fairly minimal impact on these numbers. USF4 was in some recent Humble bundles though. It was a higher tier, but the Capcom bundles typically have high average sales prices.

I'm not sure which number makes me more sad, FFV or Trails SC.

Hopefully Grandia II did well enough for GungHo to continue porting GameArt's catalogue.

I'm glad to see the Dark Souls and Metal Gear games doing so well. The fact that DmC is Capcom's highest seller is surprising and unfortunate. Don't get me wrong it's am OK game and all but there other more deserving games such as SFIV, RE4, RE5, DMC4 etc.

Also bundles have really skewed these results. Kind of calls into question the accuracy of SteamSpy in this instance.

I added in the games listed for SNK Playmore. Metal Slug 3 and King of Fighters XIII have been bundled if you are wondering why they are much higher than everything else.

NIS America also released Clan of Champions on Steam

Thanks. I wasn't sure what that was. Added.

wants to fuck an Asian grill.
Considering how late Resident Evil 5 arrived on Steam, those numbers are freaking crazy.

Its no surprise its the all time greatest selling Capcom game short of the combined sales of all the Street Fighter 2 versions.

Exactly, Cloud reached that number with one game, the other with 3.
