To get a match grade Garand you're looking AT LEAST 1000 dollars. You can find some in decent condition around 800 though. But yeah, new ones with newer parts and custom fabrication can be from 1200- over 2000. You can get a new M1A carbine from the Springfield armory in several configurations(brand new rifles) for around 1800.

EUGaffer here. I wouldn't want to carry one around with me. But i plan on buying some in the future, after graduating, i am a poor student at the moment ;). My dad had a few when i was a kid (i had a competition air rifle), and i had a lot of fun with them at the range.

It should be fine. Everything is perfectly legal and this isn't a gun control thread.
BUT IT SHOULD BE!!

j/k. Can't help but feel you might be trying to bait one by saying you need it for protection after a night of gambling though :lol

I think gun laws should be less strict in europe.

Well its hard enough to get a car license here (1500 euro minimum in holland) which I think is fucking nuts since I have a valid NZ one already and they won't let me convert, but I think that would be about right for a gun license.

I don't mind people having guns if they can show the discipline required to get one legally. Givin em out like candy just means stupid people get them and fast.

Probably because if someone with a gun/rifle/whatever goes nuts and starts shooting at people it will be less damaging with 10 rounds that with 30/40/whatever.
Well, really it takes about 2 seconds to change a clip, so the law is just to make it seem like politicians are doing something to prevent massacres. In real life if someone is determined to shoot alot of ammo off it isn't exactly going to slow them down.

I don't get CCA (is it CCA?), you can legal carry it as long as it's hidden, does it mean you can shoot to kill in self defence?
Yeah CCW licenses allow people to carry concealed (most states allow open/unconcealed carry, just look at the controversy about the obama town halls), self defense laws vary from state to state, some indicate Duty to Retreat, some allow Stand Your Ground, also Castle Doctrine applies in alot of states.

Are guns for home protection a necessity in the US or what? Everyone here seems to have one or wants one, and not just a small handgun on top of that.

I live in Canada, and no one in my family have guns at their house for home protection (as far as i know) because we have no need of them. I'm sure it's the same for alot of other canadians. I guess crime isn't as big in here thankfully.

Will the majority of gun owners ever actually shoot or even draw their gun in self-defense? I would guess not, but like they say, its better to have and not need than need and not have. Also firearms are much more than just for self defense, they are fun as a hobby and a sport.

I have a glock 26. It is very small. They make magazine extenders that give you an extra finger rest on the bottom of the magazine. I suggest getting one.

Check out the .40cal too, virtually the same gun but better stopping power.

So I'm finally in a position to purchase a gun. Check this sweet thing out.

glock26.jpg

http://www.glock.com/english/glock26.htm

It's perfect for what I want, a small weapon easily concealed for those late nights coming out of the casino. It shouldn't be more than $800 after the gun, bullets, holster, concealed permit, and registration.

Anyone one own one and have any thoughts they would like to share?

Nice!

I've owned a Glock .40 for 6yrs now.

Funny this thread popped up because I have been thinking of purchasing a handgun for home protection and range use but didn't really know where to start. A friend of mine bought a 9mm from the gun store for $199 I didn't realize they come that cheap! Not sure if I would go that low but I don't want to go over $400 for one. Any suggestions?
if you're looking for home protection that last firearm you'll want is any kind of handgun or rifle. Shotguns are you're best bet for home defense.

Definitely...or you could buy the "Judge." That thing shoots .45cal bullets and can also be loaded with .410 shotgun shells! This one might be next on my list.

can't go wrong with a glock.

I'm not really into guns for self protection but I just wanna own them for collectors sake and to take them out to the range once in a while.

I have to say after playing so many WWII games I must get a M1 Garand sometime in my life

He, I have an Arisaka...Sweet firing gun. The recoil is amazing light for it's round (slightly different 30.06

Though I want to get an AK-47, not for the gun so much as the iconography behind it, the gun that literally changed, and keeps changing the world.

My dad has a pretty substantial gun collection, with a focus on 1911 variations. The only gun I've ever owned though was one that he gave me, a Smith & Wesson 22 revolver. Not really useful for self-defense but it's accurate and fun to shoot. Also it just has a nice feel to it, it's a solid, precision-machined chunk of metal.

Though I live in Chicago and handguns are banned here, so I keep the gun at my parents' place and shoot it only when I visit. I'm pretty moderate on the gun control issue...if Chicago's handgun ban came up as a referendum, I'd vote to repeal it, but in a sense I voted for it with my feet by moving here.

I have a little .22 revolver loaded with hollow points for home defence. Yeah, yeah, I know. It's too weak to do anything to an intruder except piss them off.

I feel like revolvers are a good choice because they are reliable and because you're less likely to shoot yourself. You can clearly see if it is loaded, and you can't accidentally leave a round in the chamber.

I would trade every gun for a nice pair of tits.!

Never understand why someone has to keep a weapon for private use or stuff.

I'm Canadian, so no handguns for me, but I do have a Remington .22 rifle. I want to get a Restricted license one day for shooting at a club.

Just got a SA XD45 Service. Had to send the thing in since I was getting nosedive misfeeds and something was out of spec as I couldn't manually eject a non fired round and chamber the next via the slide.

Have a cheap Norinco 1911 for daily carry while waiting for my XD. The norinco is amazingly accurate for such a cheap chinese 1911.

Most here buy them as a hobby. Sure there are political and cultural ramifications. If you're white in the US you have a 3 out of 100,000 chance of being murdered. A Canadian has a chance of 2 out of 100,000.

There's not that much explicit danger for your stereotypical owner.

I have an old 1905 or less .22 cal rifle. It's pretty sick and has the octagon barrel. We hardly shoot it though. I mostly shoot skeet, hunt with my shotguns. Which I own two.

All I have is an old ass single barrel shotgun I got from my grandpa. I don't have any shells though and have never shot it.

Because there's nothing inherent to a gun that CAUSES the cultural problems that bring about murder. The US has huge problems. We have the largest percentage of adults incarcerated in the entire world, one of the highest per capita healthcare costs, some unbelievably retarded partisanship that argues over semantics more than policy, add in the revelation of preemptive war from the last administration and you can see we've got issues.

We also have a strong culture of personal empowerment. Guns flow into that. For many Americans guns represent equality. It represents our ability to engage equally with any other individual and do so without being intimidated or coerced.

I think the .22 cal is one of the mafia's favorite weapons for doing hits. Quiet, deadly. The bullet enters the head and doesn't have enough force to leave. So it ricochets around for a while.

The bullets are also lighter and travel further and faster then most other calibers as well.

My wife was just issued her Glock by the Police Force.. it's our first gun. Pretty bad ass little weapon. We went to the range and had some fun. I know little to nothing about weapons but its a .45

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
I didn't really understand the entry on wiki, i know it's possible to get some sorts of guns in some cases but i don't the the whole deal.
This is on gun ownership and use in the UK, anyone know the deal?

I have a Kimber 1911 Pro Carry II for daily carry and an full sized Jericho 941-F for the range. If the OP is looking for a really reliable concealed carry weapon I'd definitely recommend the subcompact baby desert eagle .45. It's a really well balanced weapon. If you're going for the Glock though go with the Glock 30. GREAT gun, easy to carry and the larger cal (.45) is ideal for self defense.

Why do you care?

I like the glock. Have one in my nightstand. I got an AR-15 last summer, it's an absolute blast to shoot. Also have a .22 for squirrels and am thinking of picking up a new handgun. Haven't decided on what, but my father in laws friend came up from South Carolina and had a Desert Eagle. Ridiculously bad ass.
