Anyone else experiencing video game burn out?

After playing a video game for quite a long time and then suddenly it doesn't feel rewarding.
I'm not sure if it's just me or the game designers really suck at their job and the game doesn't feel engaging.

I'm playing Splatoon 3 and I feel like the game could have been better, it feels like a tedious grind and to customize gear in the game requires one to play the game in their schedule and not your own.
The Shell out machine for the gotcha rewards is crap if you saved a lot of coins only to feel disappointed by its rewards, which makes you depressed and think what's the point.

Destiny 2 is fucking shit and I uninstalled that game long ago and I watch this guy's review.

I'm thinking it's not me perhaps, but these game designers fucking suck at their job.
Instead of engaging me in the wheel with dollying out rewards, it feels bad, like they give me crumbs to chase, but the crumbs they leave are utter shit and there is no flavor.
There is no chase anymore. There isn't any reward or incentive. The game lacks fun, and instead becomes a chore, work, and laborious tedium.
Difficulty in the game is less of a challenge and more like an annoyance.

When will we get better game designers in game development? So much video game burnout, like holy shit. Every game now feels like a casino and store and less of a game.
I remember the good old days of Halo 3, the secrets, the vidmaster challenges, no battle passes, complete at launch, etc. Games now sell skins and shit and rehash the same game with very little effort.
Games suck now and I feel burned out.

That's one of the reasons why I'm no longer into the "games as a service" method. I spent around 3 thousand hours on Dead By Daylight and it was fun up until the 2K hour mark. Developers kept on changing things too much and it screwed the flow of the game.

You are getting older. Have you tried taking a break from gaming? This has also happened to me and while taking a break has helped a bit I feel like this is the first gen where I am getting bored of gaming and it is not a coincidence that so many people are feeling the same.

Having made a thread about it I got to the conclusion that gaming has not evolved since the ps3/360 gen aside from better graphics and better framerate. We are playing the sames games from 15 years ago, there is little to no innovation in the AAA space. This is why I have transitioned to mostly playing indie games nowadays.

Yes I can get burnout with games from time to time. Horizon Forbidden West was the last game that done it to me around March and I haven't touched it since. I have seven trophies left to collect but just keep procrastinating.

fortunately burnout doesn't happen to often. Spiderman Miles Morales was another game where I literally quit near completion because I found it such a repetitive chore.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
It's not just you op. Games tend to be more crap as times go.

CoD went from fun to sbmm, and while 8 enjoyed destiny 2 at first, and started this season, I am totally burned out at level 97.

I could play the older cods for thousands of hours, yet the newer ones suck because of sbmm.

I don't get why someone poops a thousand additional hours into a game they no longer enjoy.

it happens a lot to me when im playing a lot of games i dislike or forcing games just to have something to play. I know at that point im better off just waiting for a release i know im gonna enjoy and just do something else.

Right now, im gonna be waiting for Mario + Rabbids 2 and Plague Tales, than Ragnarok and Tactics Ogre after that

Sole reason why i don't play these types of GAAS, even if i initially enjoy them.

Habit. Its in fact what tons of these GAAS games aim for, they're designed not to be fun but to create in you an habit of playing them.

These days a lot of games are designed in a very clinical manner. They are designed to exploit weaknesses of the human psyche, which is why they are so tiresome. These games are a war of attrition on your mind to get you to give in to the idea of paying real money to unlock cosmetics or perks.
Single player, big budget video games made in the West are designed more and more to be streamlined puddles of blandness that try to imitate movies out of an inferiority complex born from "game journalist" loudmouths whose heads are so far up their asses that they don't know what the meaning of "fun" is, thinking they have "matured" and thus showed continued disdain for the content of the 7th generation and earlier. You can feel how devoid of personality game creation has become from the products born out of it, at least in the West. Game development has become so corporatized, and I think the culture wars of the 2010s really allowed the corporate world to come in and thoroughly suck the soul out of game creation on a large scale.
The game journos were so desperate to eradicate what they saw as "gamer bros" culture in the industry, yet they never even once contemplated the sterile environment that would be left in its place.... Although many of them don't seem to care about how soulless this world has become.

When Devs and players alike stop crying about framerates, Raytracing, and visual fidelity, perhaps real ideas, creativity, and innovation will follow.
My salty take lol
But I think we all experience burnout from time to time.
There's always that one gem that pulls you back in and reminds you of why you took up the hobby in the first place.

You are playing the wrong games bro.
If you are focusing on games like it’s a chore..ie Destiny, you are doing it wrong. If you aren’t into GAAS, and you continue playing GAAS games, well, you are gonna hate games. It’s simple, play games for the enjoyment and not the chore and you will notice an incredibly positive difference.
Edit - Also, there are loads of games that aren’t like what you described…maybe try something outside of the AAA realm??

I have been feeling some burn out as well recently. I have found recently that I enjoy "protecting the loop" in Deathloop. It allows quick sessions with no pressure. If I win great, but of my adversary wins, I feel good that they can compete their run. It's a win win.

Online games, experienced burn out around 2011 and never went back to them. Seems akin to shutting your brain off and drowning out boredom.

What the human soul yearns for are stories of good vs evil, the tale of the hero, their struggles and triumphs. Philosophy, science, religion, beauty and transcendence.

So don't feel burnt out at all if there's a narrative driven story games which emphasises those things and delivers them well. (not to forget good music)

Getting into smaller or "indie" games has been a godsend for my enjoyment of gaming.

I opted out of AAA + GAAS after the original Destiny and never looked back. The whole model has not changed that much and still seems like a souless grind to me.

What time is it?
Easier said than done, but stop playing service based games. As crummy as it is that Overwatch is being shut down, I'm kind of glad that I don't need to login every day for a daily win or try to collect all the event items. I was doing the same thing with Rocket League they decided to change their monetization scheme. I'm not sure I'll ever dive back into a service based game. My addictive personality wants me to collect everything and at that point you are often playing games out of obligation instead of fun.

Report me if I continue to console war
Halo infinite, rift apart, returnal and others, along with the speed gains ssd's and quick resume have brought has reinvigorated my interest and enjoyment in gaming

Every month someone makes a burnout thread and half the site wallow and cries about how they don't enjoy games.

Go play some fast-paced intuitive games. That always helps. Like Neon White, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Tekken 7, Dusk, Tetris Effect, Celeste, Risk of Rain 2, Vampire Survivors, Streets of Rage 4.

Go play stuff like that.

Or go back to the classics, Call of Duty 2, Half-Life, FEAR, or the original Starcraft, games like that always get the blood pumping.

Do you have an addictive personality? You seem to engage in virtual skinner boxes that prey on susceptible types by giving you small morsels of dopamine hits. Try some titles that Bragr Bragr recommends, games that are gameplay and skill focused without the treadmill.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
I’m always a few days off quiting all the time. If I could break my destiny habit I’d be out.

It’s almost always people getting older and/or people playing games way to much. Life is short, don’t spend thousands of hours of your life looking at a screen. Go outside, learn a new skill, get some exercise, spend time with family/friends and your partner, ect.

You're playing the wrong type of game. Play something that doesn't involve what you mentioned so it doesn't annoy you and you feel satisfied.

This. If you are getting tired with what you've been playing, try something in the complete opposite direction from what you are used to.

Plays with kids toys, in the adult gaming world
*Turns on a retro game* plays for 12 hours doesn't want to stop when its time for work

*turns on a modern game* has to force himself to play for more than 30 mins wonders why he didn't play a retro game instead

I'm burned out on shitty modern games only prob because they suck ass

Agree OP and is part of the reason mainly play story driven, linear single player games.

Even the open world stuff I was into last generation I've kind of lost interest in these days.

A good roguelike on the side can be a great time as well.

LOL at that dudes dog in the background of the video.

Take a break from games or throw some single player or quick pick up and play games into the mix. Or play a genre you normally don't play. Maybe some retro games.

I play a bunch of grindy big time sink multiplayer games and have for ages, going all the way back to the early MMORPG and multiplayer FPS days. I really enjoy them, but will hit walls where I need to drop a game and move onto something else or take an extended break. I hit that Destiny wall myself, after putting like over 4000 hours into Destiny and Destuny 2. I haven't played Destiny 2 in over a year after getting tired of the grind. Find a new game you enjoy. You can always go back and jump back on the grind if you feel like it.

I was. Took a break for a few years and am now enjoying it again.

I got Splatoon 2 and barely played it. Playing the shit out of 3.

For me it's the quality of the newer releases, they are not as good as they once were and in a lot of cases don't work properly, i would have bought the GTA def editions and Saints Row, but not in the state they are in,

Also im waiting for Starfield as i played those type of rpg's a lot years ago, only the outer world's has come out since Fallout 4, 7 years ago, there is not enough good new games out for me to pay a subscription.
