Anyone into kpop?

I'm recently in need of a new discussion group! I won't make this first post too long or fancy. If you're a muggle, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about the genre :)

Girl group gateway drugs
Boy group gateway drugs
  • I don't follow any lol
The above list is just a sample of the groups I follow, which itself is just a sample of the groups that are or used to be out there. The links are to the official videos (rather than random uploads) for two reasons: 1) With kpop songs, the video is almost as important as the audio, 2) support the artists by increasing their view counts!

* Warning: this will get stuck in your head for about a week

A girl at work is really into Shinee so I kind of got into a bit of kpop via that. Currently into Twice and Shinee, and a little bit of Red Velvet/IZ*ONE

Kpop music is pretty much dominating here in my country and what's sad is that it's more popular than our own local music here. I think twice, blackpink, and momoland are the most popular here right now.

Good taste!
No, thankfully.
We'll pull you in eventually!
Eh, a bit, but it was mostly SNSD
Also good taste! Have you heard/seen Lil Touch by Oh!GG, the subunit made of the 5 remaining girls in SM? The group is still together, just 3 are no longer with the label. Tiffany has also been putting in work in the USA with a few English singles and a tour coming next year.

There's actually a Kpop Community thread but it's been dead since the exodus. For some reason the community decided to migrate over to the asylum, which makes no sense since so much of that thread was pictures of hot girls. I'm surprised Era would even tolerate that, I mean if it were hot guys sure, but not women, but maybe they toned it down over there who knows. And actually the community seems to mostly just use a discord server now so maybe they don't even post on Era.

I was actually surprised that the thread was allowed to exist here before the purge, but I guess it was hidden enough that none of the virtue signaling feminist allies came in there.

I thought K-Pop was interesting for a time, but it all seems the same to me now that it's no longer interesting. They just seem all too similar.

And I was there at the birth of K-Pop with BoA.

This is the case. Discord was a survivors raft, then when Era finally got rolling we attempted a thread move, but it ended up being filled with new people who appreciate kpop about the way a teenager stan typically does while we tend to see and discuss the big acts as well as the new ones and more in the manner that a kpop CEO would (we have all been following it many years). So Discord is the actual former GAF community and the format has worked out best for us as it allows clean organization of all the different things we discuss instead of mashing them into one linear thread and needing to try and track across many pages.

They're actually the reason I came back from Era. Turns out they're selectively virtuous.

Huh, interesting. I enjoy the thread format, but if the discord has a good moderation staff then I'd want to check it out.

No. I’m into Korean chicks though . Thread needs more pics

I like that song that sounds like a computer made it where all the girls dance on stage while lip-syncing.

Kpop is a slippery slope though. I went into it casually like 9 years ago because I had Korean roommates in college that turned me onto it and now I'm in so deep I'll never get out. At first you start watching the music videos because they're visually stunning, then you want to see the full choreo so you watch music show performances and dance practice videos. Then you want to know more about your favorite idols so you start watching Korean variety shows where they appear as guests. Shows like Running Man and Knowing Bros. But then you start to like those shows and the hosts so you start watching them regularly and they turn you on to other variety shows Then on these shows you see a lot of Korean food and the way they eat with a bunch of different tasty looking stuff so then you go to Korean restaurants and Korean markets cause the food is so good. Then you're looking at Korean cooking videos on Youtube. You'll also watch audition programs to form new groups. You can also fall into Korean dramas quite easily especially if one of your favorite idols stars in one. You'll check one out, love it and be desperate for others.

And it never lets up really because if you follow a lot of groups, every month one or more of your favorites will be making a comeback. This month in particular has been crazy, so many big groups making comebacks with MAMAMOO and Red Velvet still to come next week.

The one thing I don't like is girl groups tend to disband when I feel their at their peak, both musically and visually in their late 20's. It also sucks when good groups disband early because they aren't successful enough to keep going, Stellar and BESTie come to mind in that regard. The girls in new groups keep getting younger and younger though which is really off putting to me. Especially when they're tall or top heavy and you can't really tell them apart from girls 10 years older than them. Recently Yujin and Wonyoung come to mind, as well as Nancy and Somi a couple of years ago.

Like the OP I do tend to focus more on girl groups but I pay attention to the guys too and like quite a few songs by guy groups. This year my favorite being "My Pace" by Stray Kids which is not only a good song but has a great message. And when it comes to girl groups I favor sexy, girl crush and fun concepts over cute concepts. I can't get into overly cute girl groups, not only do I not like their look but I generally dislike the cute songs as well., obviously there are a few exceptions though. I generally favor R&B-ish songs with some decent vocals.

While I don't participate anymore, the discord is a definitely great resource for me in terms of news and pics. Perhaps a little too obsessed with Twice rankings though. There's only one correct ranking anyway and that's Sana > Jihyo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>the rest:messenger_winking_tongue:

You don't really sound like a Neo Member; a returner perhaps? Anyway, no matter how many posts the thread had it was hidden off in the off-topic community section amongst many other more popular communities. If you weren't looking for it you weren't gonna just come across it. Trust me if a guy like Crossing Eden or any of his ilk would have found it, they would have had the mods shut it down.

The music videos are way better than pics but that's how you get sucked in.

clap clap clap I feel like I could just replace the entirety of my OP with most of that first block. Also I officially like you because of the BESTie namedrop. Love Options is the song that finally made me like kpop - after many, many youtube links from my friend - and it was heartbreaking to see them disband with seemingly so much left ahead of them.

I'm not super into TWICE yet, but I'm warming up to them. Momo is my favorite visually. Where does that put me on the spectrum?

WANNA ONE just released their new album 1¹¹=1 (Power of Destiny)

Also Bolbangan4 (one of my favorite duo singers) released My Trouble

I casually listen. I havne't gotten deep into it or anything but I do have stuff that's stuck with me for years like "Hate You" by Ladies Code and "You Are" by Loveholic (love this band but they are probably not the kind of music we're talking about here).

I totally like stuff DDU-DU DDU-DU so I'd be interested in seeing a solid Kpop topic here to follow new stuff I may be interested in.

Vids for Loveholic "You Are" (because I mentioned it) and Ladies Code "Hate you" because it's awesome!

I have my on and off phases (same with jpop) which usually starts when someone links me a song I really like.

Like these triggered me in the past (both slightly NSFW, especially the Laysha one)

But it really is a slippery slope as Boss Mog already said... at some point you'll find yourself watching (age-restriced) fancams of lewd dances on youtube. I mean, people aren't kidding when they say that this is pretty much their equivalent to porn.

I can't say I've ever heard anyone say that, but I guess I've only talked to a certain subset of kpop fans. Personally I don't get any sexual gratification from kpop, nor do I try to. I enjoy the sexy videos/choreo, but at that point it's more admiration than lust. Gain and her associated group Brown Eyed Girls are notorious for pushing it in a relatively coy music culture. I say more power to em; that video made me laugh the first time I saw it.

In other news: Grats to my favs for hitting 500M views for DDDD! YG's business strategy may be infuriating, but it's nonetheless satisfying to see these girls succeed despite having such a small number of songs.

I don't follow kpop but man that K/DA song is on a whole another level. Both music and visuals wise.

I'm reading some subreddits where this is being brought up frequently, especially when it comes to fancams.

I mean when you have an idol that is pretty much showing her vulva (only wearing hotpants and a thong) by spreading her legs towards the crowd (Siyu from Dimepiece, for the curious), then yeah... I can see why people say that this is their (their as in South Koreans) porn, because that is pretty much the only "porn" they can get legally.

Riot doesn't fuck around with their LoL-inspired music. Somehow they actually make real-sounding stuff that isn't parody/cringe/corny. See: the Pentakill album and Get Jinxed for more examples.

I'm worried that they're not going to take advantage of K/DA. There's so much more merch they could be selling from this one single alone, let alone future songs if they ever happen. Not everything needs a live performance, so it wouldn't be too hard to have Jaira+Madison+Miyeon+Soyeon phone in their verses. They could easily make bank off of a physical single that's packaged like a kpop example, with a photobook and all. Not to mention the fitted cap the girls are wearing in the video, rather than the "dad hat" they have for sale.

I see. I have a limited perspective as an i-fan. That makes sense. Kinda gross for anyone to be doing that, k-pop or not, but I understand now.

Ladies Code is great but too depressing to listen to, especially pre-accident stuff.

Those vulgar performance groups really have nothing to do with proper Kpop though. No real Kpop fan is going to like that stuff. Like coopermidnight coopermidnight , I'm not looking to fap to Kpop. It's more about appreciating it as beauty and art. The catchy music, the pretty people, the great choreos, the stylish wardrobe, the colorful and insane music videos; it all comes together to create the ultimate art form. And when they do sexy concepts it's almost always classy and rarely ever raunchy or vulgar; like this:

Yeah, I read about that a year or two ago. There were all kinds of conspiracy theories going around and I was like, "nope" and walked out.

As for the sexy stuff, I don't think I've watched more than two Kpop videos before. All my interest comes just from the music, which I like enough to have a playlist on Itunes for when I'm drawing. I love sexy, but I never thought of Kpop as porn-like. Sexy and porn are pretty different categories to me~

You're missing out by not watching the videos. Some of them are really amazing. When I just listen to the songs on a music player it brings up the video in my mind, makes it better.

I might be am biased, but check out DDU-DU DDU-DU in the OP. The video was a worldwide YouTube hit in the summer, and it's easy to see why after watching it. Kpop songs are often tied to their videos, but this one would be incomplete without the video.

In other news, who's ready for Red Velvet and MAMAMOO?

I'd have to say that kpop getting too sexy in dances of late is part of the reason that I took a step back since many of the groups I was into eventually go that route in the end. I get that it is a way to prolong the career of these artist but it kinda destroys the original appeal of some of these artists.

Eeeeey! Glad to see you made this thread. So, what is the major difference between KPop and JPop? Is there much of one? What has drawn you in personally into the Kpop world and why does it different from other pop?

Let me know! I have listened to a few groups (Reol, but she is more Jpop I guess, and K/DA), but I can't really say I have a firm love for them yet. Much easier to listen to when you don't understand the lyrics, so that is already a plus compared to American Pop.

Some smooooth listening from the former Wonder Girl:

Yubin - Thank U Soooo Much

Such a dissapointing comeback from her. I used to really love her rap parts in WG's songs, she was so badass and edgy. Too bad she went full generic pop.

Edit: Just checked out the other 2 tracks in her new album and they are much much better. Game over is particularly good, very unique.

I think Really Bad Boy is going to quickly grow on me. I liked it on the first listen. Haven't heard the rest of the RV mini yet. MAMAMOO's mini is good to me, but not really exciting. I can see how that would be an issue in the current culture.

I don't know enough j-pop to answer the bolded questions. Hopefully someone else can field that.

As for the rest... Well, I'm a sucker for catchy earworm songs. My collection's got a bunch of 80s/90s/00s Western pop songs on it. These days, though, Western pop sounds really samey-same and bland IMO. There are exceptions, like Carly whom we mentioned in the other thread, but the quantity is low. K-pop is a constant source of new earworms - for better or worse - which is of course appealing to me. The constant flooding of content is also rewarding if you become attached to a group. Red Velvet, for example, has had four comebacks this year alone, not to mention all the stage performances for each one and appearances on variety shows. The artificial connection between fan and artist is much stronger because the artists are treated as (and called) idols over there. That itself can be a touchy subject, so I'll just leave it at that.

The visuals are also another great part of k-pop. As mentioned earlier in the thread, music videos and choreography are integral to the k-pop culture and sometimes define a song as much as or more than the actual audio. I find the choreo especially impressive. Each single has a group dance that lasts as long as the song; you get the highlights of it in the MV and the full thing in stage performances. As someone who can neither sing nor dance, it's easy for me to appreciate those who do both really well.

I like both this single (as well as the rest of the mini) and the Lady single she put out a little while back, but that's because I adored REBOOT and need more 80s-flair Wonder Girls. I'm easy to please :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Anybody catch the Melon Music Awards yesterday? Some nice performances. Here's some 60fps HD clips for those interested:
MOMOLAND, BLACKPINK, (G)I-DLE, Apink, MAMAMOO, GFRIEND, iKON, BTS

Kinda sounds like fascism. Probably a Momo stan who wasn't happy with my Twice ranking. Anyway, I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.

man like people who have bad taste in things is something i just cant understand. there is so much good music and good entertainment and good art out there. i even get there are some people who want to be ironic and thats fine but how can you just knowingly just ingest shitty music. i mean it is a lot of half serious and half ironic and its gross. be a person. be a human being. stop liking shit. stop posting shitty gifs of a korean chick half saying something in reaction to what i say. realize you have bad taste. realize what you want is an asian GF and you wont get it. ever. and if you do she will look nothing like the girls you idolize. i dont like bad taste. i have good taste in things. great taste. some of the best taste. i dont put my stamp on things unless i 100 percent back it. stop liking bad thing people.

I was into Psy waaaaaaaay before Gangnam Style released, so I was legitimately surprised when it became the #1 song on youtube at release.

But other than Psy, I'm only into two groups, f(x), and Shinee. I'm more into rock than Pop, and in terms of pop, I prefer Japanese pop.

You sound about as smart as this guy. What I can't understand, is people like you who feel the need to come in here and take a dump on things and people they know nothing about. I mean it kind of says a lot about somebody's life if they spend time coming into threads about stuff that doesn't interest them and writing paragraphs just to insult people. You sound like a bitter, out of touch geezer complaining about "kids and their darn music".

4 Walls by f(x) was the album that made me branch out from my intro group. I actually read about it in the PopGAF community thread (i.e. the one for western pop) where it was highly praised as a potential pop album of the year back in 2015. Papi is my jam, but I enjoy the whole thing from start to finish. Not sure why SM is doing them dirty and not giving them any comebacks; they're a successful group.

LMAO... just be sure to check the ages. Some groups have big age gaps between the members like this one:

The youngest members just turned 14 and 15 while the oldest member is 23, but guessing which is which isn't always as easy as it sounds.
