I've kinda loved all the movies except Hollywood. Though, a recent rewatch of Jackie Brown made me look back on it less fondly.

That's really weird. My first viewing of Jackie Brown made me think of it as his worst film. As I've gotten older and viewed it more times, it's become one of my favorites. While a lot of the side characters are more forgettable, Pam Grier and Robert Forester are masterful.
Hollywood is a slow burn. It kind of reminds me of Parasite in that I went it with preconceptions of what both films would be without seeing any preview coverage and got something completely different but enjoyable. The pacing in both movies are deliberately plodding and the final ten minutes of each movie wrap up with what you'd expect from both directors.

haha we are on such opposite ends with Jackie Brown. The older I get and the more times I've seen it, the less I enjoy it.
Hollywood wasn't bad or anything. I even watched it twice, so I must have liked it somewhat. I think I was just let down by it in the end for whatever reason. It felt too meandering for me. Then I rewatch Inglorious Basterds and it's just so tight and focused.

Scorsese's cape fear !!! Just saw it yesterday on netflix made almost 30 years ago !! Wowsers lol really enjoyed it haha might check out some hitchcock movies soon really liking thriller type movies with a lot of mind games

Continued my trip through the work of Hitchcock last night with Gaslight. Brilliant film though Angela Lansbury is disconcerting both for being young when honestly I can’t ever imagine her being young and for her absolutely dreadful accent. There are a few odd English accents, but hers is special.

Did you know that was a remake of a film with a nearly identical plot made 4 years earlier also called Gaslight? I didn't either until I sat down last weekend thinking I was going to get some Hitchcock goodness when instead I got that snoozer.

I've seen it before, probably 10 years ago, and remembered the general tone and story. I forgot how slimy Tony Curtis was as the muckraking bagman for sociopathic bully, Burt Lancaster. It's got some noirish qualities to it, but isn't following that template. I recommend it.

I've liked a few over the years, especially the old ones. Casablanca is a great movie on many levels. An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The Apartment. Roman Holiday. Sabrina.
Newer ones include several starring Anthony Hopkins. The Remains of the Day, Shadowlands, The Painted Veil, Legends of the Fall, Amelie, High Fidelity.
It seems the genre has thrown itself into the dumpster the last 20 years, with most of them being teenage highschool drama or softcore porn, but maybe I just haven't been paying much attention.

American Beauty may just be my favorite movie. If you were to ask me what my favorite movie was, it's not what'd come to mind but it's a flick where after every time I watch it, I think, "that might be my favorite movie"
I know so many of the scenes by heart. There arent a lot of movies like that for me. Definitely one I could just watch repeatedly, like Taxi Driver, Friday, or Good Will Hunting.
Just awesome in every way. Gives me a perspective on my own life every time, and reminds me to appreciate every second that I can.

Casablanca is absolutely fucking wonderful. I watched it for the first time a few months ago and it blew me away. The funny thing is it felt weirdly modern for such an old film.
There is in general a huge quality gap when you go from the 2010s to say the 1970s where you have modern films which are just shit for the most part and then you look at 30s-70s and it’s just so much quality. The 80s were fun in their own way but I suspect my nostalgia clouds my judgement and quality starts dropping in the 90s culminating in the 10s being absolutely haram.

Let it be known that I'm a man who appreciates a solid ghost story. What Lies Beneath is underrated and too often forgotten. A Zemeckis directed horror film turned thriller. Lots of skill on display here as the movie transcends genres and ends up feeling fairly Hitchcockian near the end. This movie is good stuff.

i have recently watched pedro almodovar's sort of thriller skin i live in. and it is amazing.
i generally don't like the "x years ago" trope in movies. i think its a cheap way to construct narrative with a twistbut almodovar really nails it and punch you in the stomach with it.
acting and filming are great as well. locations are beautiful and unexpected buika is always more than welcomed.
go watch it. don't waste time.

also I watched a cool sci fi film called the prospect and it was actually pretty awesome! Ifyou guys like science fiction/space stuff this one is good, and has a decent enough story. Totally worth the hour and a half

Recently saw Zodiac and Seven. David Fincher is an amazing director. I thought of watching Social Network but I know the story already and didn't want to watch a movie glorifying that bastard Zuck. I have read Gone Girl too. I hope he makes more movies and frequently too

Put off watching it for a while even though I really like all of the actors. Was kinda leery of it because I wasn't sure if it was gonna be a pro/anti-war political thing, but I was really glad I had watched it afterward. Reviews were kinda middling, but I was really moved at the end. I wasn't entirely sure I was buying all of it as I watched it, but as it progressed, it started to really show its true nature, grounded in reality. Really good stuff.

Another Dirty Harry movie tonight. This time The Enforcer. Brilliant film, loads of fun, and I was really hoping to see tits. They were jiggling nicely throughout but sadly remained covered.

For a doofy big budget romantic comedy which takes the "uptight guy meets free spirited love interest, and proceeds to grow internally" cliche to the extreme, I was surprised just how many big belly laughs I got out of Along Came Polly.
Guess what though: Ben Stiller's uptight antics cause Jennifer Aniston to grow as well. Who would have thunk? Fun little script, and I continue to enjoy Ben Stiller in most things. I like his brand of comedy, and the roles he takes.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was hilarious also. While Aniston took a backseat comedy wise, she held her own as the free spirited love interest and was absolute eye candy throughout. Solid performance from her overall.
Nice enjoyable, if somewhat dumb, movie. Made me feel good by the end. I needed this.

Bill and Ted: Face the Music
Just don't waste your time. It is irritatingly bad, despite a few very jokes/scenes. I was foolish enough to just go off the "reviews" I saw on social. Unanimously calling it fun to good and all recommending it. Those fuckers lied to me! There was no point to the story, what bits there were of a story were boring/dumb and felt incredibly forced and labored by all parties.
Somehow the two sons from Bogus Journey turned into two girls (no clue if trans or not), which is already kinda dumb cuz you can just as easily write new characters w/o retcon. But regardless, the "actresses" who played their daughters were Disney Channel bad. If that was an attempt at acting like Bill and Ted as girls... they failed.... bad. They (and their entire story arc) is just one big annoying distraction from the at least mildly humorous banter of Bill and Ted.
There are other equally worthless and unfunny plot elements going around all of this (the "robot", hell/death, the wives doing....something/nothing?, the reality failing and future lameness), further dragging down the experience.
Any random poster on this forum, if given access to an HD Cam, Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter and a 6 pack of beer could have made a better addition to the Bill and Ted franchise.

Yeah that Bill and Ted movie was one im glad I steered clear from. With no affinity for the franchise myself, itjust had bad written all over it. I enjoyed Jay and Silent Reboot enough, but if I weren't a Kevin Smith loyalist from back in the day, I doubt that'd have been the case.
I was shocked how many people were excited for a new Bill and Ted tbh. Even friends of mine who never talked about the movies prior were asking to watch it with me. Shit looked dumb.

Watched Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone a couple days ago for the first time since I saw it in theaters as a kid, in 2001. This little bit of the OST is stuck in my head now lol

Dude, National Treasure fuggin' slaps
Awesome adventure movie with cool little history lessons thrown in throughout and dumbed down enough via Nicolas Cage's sidekick Riley who is supposed to be like the slacker hacker guy to provide additional levity and ensure even a community college graduate like myself can enjoy this patriotic escapade. Fun action, no annoying characters, and there is a heavy dose of that Disney polish which is so unique to their movies. Nicolas Cage is such a natural fit here too. No zany or over the top moments, but just him doing his Nicolas Cage Hollywood thing, like a toned down Indiana Jones. If you don't enjoy National Treasure on DVD, then you can get the heck outta my house, pal.

Finished the five film series Battles Without Honor and Humanity. AWESOME! That is the only word to describe this Yakuza Odyssey. All five films follow a single story arc following a core set of characters over ~24 years. From their post-war days on the street, to becoming becoming Yakuza and eventually all moving up the ranks or being killed. Think of combining Goodfellas (scope) and the Godfather into a single Gangster Epic. Oh and its supposedly based on true events, which makes it even more interesting.
Warning: This can be VERY difficult to follow as there are dozens of characters who are introduced very quickly. Many die and new ones are introduced. Combine this with that many characters appearance alter as time and status change. So expect to not realize one guy on screen was a member of the other guys family two movies back.... but its ok, just roll with the punches and you will have a great time. The most significant characters often have defining features or habits that make them recognizable throughout.
While this series does have a lot of violence, most (but not all) is gore free and often kind of humorous due to the frantic nature of the men delivering the damage. The Yakuza accuracy with firearms seems to be just below Imperial Storm Trooper.
As expected the films focus heavily on the political/organizational structure of the Yakuza families and the back stabbing and back door deal making that occurs in the pursuit of wealth and power. One break this series makes from other Yakuza stories (from my limited perspective) is that they make most Bosses out to be very weak men who rely entirely on their (young) soldiers to keep them in power. One boss in particular becomes known for crying when he cant get his way so his men will feel bad and do whatever stupid thing he wishes.
Will most definitely be watching this series again multiple times in the future. An absolutely mesmerizing tale that's ending was bitter sweet.
TL;DR If you are interested in Yakuza films, this is where you should start.

Much like Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers is another showcase where Robert DeNiro just steals the show. While one of my favorite aspects of Meet the Parents was just how grounded it felt, Meet the Fockers very much does what sequels traditionally do and attempts to dial everything about the original to 11. As a result, Fockers is less grounded and more cartoon like, which leads to a lesser film overall. Still, this was a fun time and definitely better than what most would assume a Meet the Parents sequel could be. I cant help but relate to Jack Byrnes here, DeNiro's character. I too feel old fashioned as I try and resolve my way through the progressive hippie dippy world around me these days. Sometimes tradition is important, and ultimately I feel his stubbornness throughout the movie was well earned. Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand's characters were outlandish and while I've never held much affinity for their other works, they held their own here to provide a stark contrast to DeNiro and offered him plenty of material to riff on as the continual straight man of the movie. Not as good as Meet the Parents, but I really wasnt expecting it to be.
