Does being apathetic make you feel like you are cool? Does it make you feel superior for not getting involved in the pettiness of things? Do you honestly just not care how others see you?

Personally i subscribe to the train of thought that the opposite of love is apathy. By that i mean if you hate or even mildly dislike someone/something then they/it has some control over you. So being apathetic means things have no control over me.

So GAF tell us why you just don't give a fuck.

I only slightly care about what people close to me think about me. But for people I don't know, I couldn't care any less.

But then again I personally don't care about a lot of things. That doesn't mean I think they're meaningless, it's just I don't care about them. For example, religion. Or politics. I know politics in a way affect how I live because of where I live, but even then, as far as I can live the way I want, that's alright.

Same for looks. I'm now in Singapore and everyday I leave the place where I'm staying in shorts, sandals and some random shirt. Most of the time they don't even match, but I don't care :D

Uhm hey. Hate is the opposite of love. Apathy is like just not caring either way.

I feel like if I don't let some things to get a hold of me, then I won't have motivation to do anything, y'know? But there are some things you want to be apathetic about so they won't make you go crazy i.e. one-itis where you only care about one girl and there is no other girl in the world for you...stuff like that.

Both apathy and empathy can be destructive. If one is too empathetic, they will easily be taken advantage of. If one is too apathetic, while they won't have much to worry about, they will probably miss out on some great relationships and experiences.

I think for the most part people are apathetic because it's easier to not care than it is to care. It's easier to NGAF about someone who dropped coins than it is to help them pick them up.

How does that work? Does Tyler Perry have control over you, for example?

To answer your specific questions, I don't think apathy makes someone cool. Apathy is a defense mechanism designed by people who don't want to form an opinion about something. There are big, tough and important issues out there where if you take take one side or the other, some people are going to like you and others are going to dislike you. Apathy is for people who don't have a backbone.

2th, you do care very much about a lot of things. It is a good quality to have.

Uhm. Dunno for others, but in my case one thing is helping out people, and another is being apathetic regarding what other people might think. It's not like I don't care about the people themselves, just when they think something negative about me that's not necessarily negative from an objective point of view.

I think alot of people are dis-illusioned in my generation, the prospects arent good all around, greedy motherfuckers at the top, corporations are people, stupidity is spreading like a disease, no one knows what the fuck is going to happen with any appreciable accuracy, but to me, it looks like we are headed for even rougher times. But hey, I could be wrong. Even with that view I can't just sit in place and be apathetic, I would hate myself.

Apathy is closer to the absence of love than the opposite of it. But it's not necessarily even on the same spectrum.

Using "Darwin" to justify being condescending to people is not apathy at all, and neither is having a negative opinion on everything bar My Little Pony.
