Apparently, all the Wii Us were recalled at my local Best Buy

Kinda nuts it never got to Gamecube prices.

I remember GCN being marked down like crazy.
Hey Nintendo, I'll buy a Wii U if you just reduce the damn price!
Why...

Nintendo, drop the price to like $150 and I bet these sell. $300 is preposterous for how long its been out.
Why is Nintendo so stubborn with Wii U pricing? It's as if they don't want the console to sell.

More consoles in people's homes = more software sales

Nobody's going to buy that shit for a premium price at this point.
Gamepads are expensive to make, and no economy of scale on the other parts.

So I suppose the better question is, why didn't the retailers do their own price slashing up till now?
If Nintendo is doing a recall/buyback, maybe it was an easier loss to swallow than slashing prices and losing money that way.
Slashing the price would've resulted in the retailers losing some money.

With a recall, Nintendo might give them credits or incentives. Which both sides need because of the Switch.

Retailers will be a bit more open to carry more Nintendo items, Nintendo improves their relationship with them.

Pick up a refurbished unit from Nintendo. You'll save $100 in the process.
Right on! Just never been cool with buying used systems. Never know if someone's kid stuffed baby food in the disc drive, haha (worked at GameStop too many years, yes, I did see this)

Makes sense from that POV...

I honestly don't think Nintendo cares for the wiiu's success at this point. It's practically a dead console right now.
It's all about that switch.
Been dead for years. Vita even gets more games.
I get the feeling the Wii U will never be a great collector's item. It's good for about 5 games and most of those games will get a better version on Switch.

Bought a white Wii U 32GB from Nintendo's store on Ebay for $215 a few weeks ago.

Looks and feels new and came with Nintendo Land and Super Mario World 3D. Major reason I'd delayed so long is I wanted a 32GB white version. I almost pulled the trigger on the Skylanders 8GB white version, but glad I waited.

$215 with 2 games installed is a great deal on this.

Has anyone ever ordered from Nintendo's website? How long does it take to get your order?
It took me less than a week to get the Pokémon faceplates, though those are substantially smaller than a Wii U.

In general, though, I've had a lot of good experience with their parts store. Even back in the day, I was able to get the GCN component cable and broadband adapter with no fuss.

Almost sounds like this was never planned to have a price drop, even if it did succeed.
If they did succeed, they wouldn't have been stuck with so much launch stock which could have allowed them to invest in shrinking parts. It would also likely have saved that chip factory that went bankrupt killing their delivery. I think Sony owns that one now.

Almost bought a new one last week when my left analog stick started acting up. Decided to replace the analog stick in my Gamepad and look wait a bit on a new Wii U or one of the used Zombi U bundles. Maybe I should go ahead and try and find one soon or get a refurb from Nintendo.

Wait new one only at $199..damn, mistakes were definitely NOT made.
I'd say believing something that's never been confirmed (or even hinted at) falls firmly under the umbrella of 'mistakes.'

If you think Nintendo's gonna charge $100 less for the Switch on day one than they charge for a less powerful console in year four, you're mad.

Highly recommend buying refurb from Nintendo. I bought one from there and it was either completely brand new or at the very least the shell for the system itself was brand new. My guess is that at this point they're all brand new.

Also cool is buying from them is the only way you can get a 32gb model in white. Definitely the way to go if you want a white one.

I think $200 is possible, but if not definitely $250 which is still $50 cheaper.

Miyamoto publicly said they were disappointed with how much they had to charge for Wii U. Context is everything.

Is it possible that Best Buy decided to pull all Nintendo systems from sale in order to make sure there's no confusion or plenty of availability Nintendo hardware since ... aren't they selling the NES Classic in limited quantities tomorrow?

Those will be sold out at every location practically before they are even open. They don't need to make shelf room for those. Lol.

People buying NES Classics at Best Buy won't even see the shelf. They'll be handed tickets and head to the register.

Seems to me that the recent announcements of cancelled WiiU versions of games makes a lot more sense now and Nintendo is going full original Xbox with the WiiU and trying to kill it as quickly as humanly possible.

Stubborn till the end. You'd think by now they would do a price drop but I guess not and lots of people would jump on it if it was cheaper.
I'd imagine their logic up until now has been that the Wii U is a dead platform, and it's better to make money on a trickle of consoles than to lose money on a fire sale. The Wii U just had to stay alive long enough to preserve their retail presence until the Switch came along.

So if you're Nintendo, you'd rather it go away quietly, and have the narrative be "Nintendo capitalizes on the frenzy around the NES Classic with new console!" instead of "Nintendo desperate to unload their failed Wii U console".

I'd love to be surprised, but I seriously doubt the price aggression of a company that's still selling New 3DS XLs for $199. If they couldn't cut costs years into the life of the Wii U to justify selling under $299, I'm gonna hazard a guess that they probably won't come in much lighter with a more powerful system with a much better controller screen.

I'd say $279 is as aggressive as they get.
