Are you pretty much completely anonymous on the internet if you...

no. Security cameras. Also you need to use TOR and probably purchase everything with cash. Also going on craigslist for a 2nd hand laptop will probably link you.

Lots of vectors to identify you with.

Somewhat but if authorities really want to find you they will.

There was a famous hacker who only used public wifi to do shit and they managed to get him in a library when he got up from his computer.

Use a VPN while being on public wifi at a Starbucks on a burner laptop that you bought on Craigslist or something.

I wonder how much resources is needed to track someone like that down with so many layers of protection.

Nope. They can still find out all the kiddie porn you're downloading and put you in prison.

The way to be anonymous is to be seen as someone inconsequential. There aren't enough humans on earth to surveil all the other humans on earth, so 99.9% of it is filtered through algorithms that match your words and your internet traffic patterns with patterns in their databases. There is no human watching you on the other end.

Probably not with public surveillance and with phone in you pocket. However are you interesting enough for people to give a fuck about you? I would start there.

No. They can find where you were and pull camera footage from the area. Are you doing something that would make anyone go to that level of effort?

They can use approximation data to find a ton of information by inference now. Imagine that you were doing all of your normal daily activities, then one day there was nothing - just an Estellex sized hole where you used to be. They can look for data with similar patterns to you that's otherwise masked, and infer that it's actually you. Also they can use friend/family/workplace information to gather information about you, depending on where you are and what you do. I guess if you bused to a different location, used an internet cafe, wore a disguise, and paid by cash for all of it, you could have some level of true anonymity.

The only time I've ever been worried about this was when I bid on a guitar on eBay in like 2002, thought it was a great deal, but found out I bid in a foreign currency instead of USD, and the guitar was instead going to cost me like 800 bucks (instead of the 200 foreign money I had bid). I was stressed out in the moment so I went to a library and made a new eBay account with a new yahoo email address and outbid myself. I worried that they'd be able to trace me and didn't sleep well for like a week.

Ah, being young and stupid in the (relative) infancy of the internet.

Remaining truly anonymous on the net would require so much effort that you'd look very conspicuous even to the untrained eye.
Not even 7 proxies can save you.

You can never be truly anonymous on the net. If someone really wants to find you, they will. It’s more a question of,

“What steps can I take to make the amount of effort and resources to locate me not worth the trouble respective to the consequences of whatever (illegal) activity I’m partaking in?”.

In other words, don’t make yourself a big fish. All depends on what you’re doing, your being at risk is proportional to what you’re involved in and if that makes you a worthwhile bother.

vpns are only trustworthy if you believe what they tell you (that they don't log info)
they have your account info you payed with..

4d chess would be using someone elses leaked vpn info

grab a laptop and slap tails os on there. use free public wifi. that is pretty safe imo. unless u are doing some leet hacker spy shit. then they just know you were there, not who you are, yet. nobody gives a fuck probably

A lot of the "free" VPN companies will sell your traffic to firms and advertisers, that's how they can afford for the VPN service to be "free". Sadly even some paid VPNs do this. You aren't ever truly anonymous, but the best you can do is use a trusted VPN with Tor (assuming you mitigate all compromise such as disabling java script and so on).
